Excuse me, but didn’t the kids just get out of school? Didn’t we just say goodbye to waking kids up early, pack-ing lunches and hurrying to drop off and pick up? And remember that list you made of all the brilliant things you were going to accomplish? How many of those did you even touch? Can someone please hit the rewind button!
I feel like the summer is flying by and even though we still have most of the month of August, I want more. Everyone I have spoken with seems to feel the same way. Where did that saying come from “the lazy days of summer”? Everything is so fast-paced these days that you blink and your two year old is suddenly 20. Target put out school supplies in early July. Hallmark has posters telling us to preview ornaments. Major retail stores have winter fashions out and I am sure Christmas decorations will be out in mid August.
The fast food industry flourishes on our country’s lifestyle. Even Thanksgiving dinner is not sacred any-more; you can pick up a complete precooked meal at your local grocery store. Most illnesses these days can be attributed to stress and pharmaceutical companies are happy to provide meds in every shape and size.
Are you with me so far? It’s a well-known fact that time moves faster the older you get, but is there any way
to slow things down? 24 hours in a day is just not enough for most of us. My house is a testament to the “not enough hours in a day” theory. In my house, there is no need for dressers or closets, we have piles of clean laundry all over my bedroom floor. Does that mean I focus on having fun with my family and friends or does that mean I am completely unorganized? It’s a com-bination of both really and then sprinkle in my need to be involved in EVERYthing that has ANYthing to do with my kids. It’s not just me; it’s all of us. We are exhausting ourselves and for what?
Life goes by in a flash - certainly summer seems to. But, there’s a bright side! It’s not over yet. There are still movies at the park to enjoy. There is plenty of sunshine to bask in at the beach, a Water Conservation Expo at Linear Park, summer barbeques, last minute vacations and more. Don’t let the first day of school arrive with-out being able to feel like you accomplished something. Whether it be to take a photography class or to just sit on the sofa with the kids and watch Spongebob reruns. Summer extends through October in San Diego, but time with the kids is limited. Enjoy them and let this be a warning to slow down and yes, smell the darn roses!

July 4th began with a splash in 4S Ranch when Pacific Swim opened its doors to ALL of our residents for the day! The 4S Ranch HOA rented the pool so the community could enjoy a little relief from the July 4th heat!
Later in the day, thousands of people turned out for our second annual 4S Ranch Carnival at Linear Park. Families enjoyed games, jumps, face painting, music, food and performances from Danceology and United Studios of Self Defense. Kids were able to decorate cup-cakes at the Lifetime Montessori booth (Elite Sponsorship) or learn a few karate moves from United Studios of Self Defense. Other sponsors included Sophie Dongmei Lang of Farmers Insurance, Cold Stone Creamery, Barbeques Galore, XS Energy Drinks and Grace Church. Local groups such as the Del Norte Youth Football Organization, Del Norte High School Hockey Team, and the Cyclone Baseball team participated by selling a variety of foods and snacks. Del Norte High School ASB group painted fingernails and Oak Valley’s Band Boosters had a booth for children to decorate flip flops or bags. Proceeds from each booth supported the sponsor’s cause.
4S Ranch ~ Del Sur Community Foundation Celebrates new Board
The 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation welcomed the new board of directors on July 1. Outgoing Board Chair, Dr. David Li, turned
the gavel over to Adriana Amon at the Grant Celebration held at the end of June. under David’s leadership, the Foundation’s mem-bership increased to 46 members, intro-duced a new event to the community (Girl’s night Out at the Commons) and, most importantly, the Foundation granted
a total of $8500 to fund the Accelerated Math Program at Stone Ranch Elementary School, the Compass Learning program for Del Sur Elementary School, and funds for community outreach projects for the Oak Valley Music Boosters. With this grant cycle, the Foundation has given grants to community organizations totaling over $20,000. not only has the Foundation given $20,000 in grants, it has built a $ 22,600 endowment that will provide funds to 4S Ranch and Del Sur organiza-tions and causes for generations to come.
The 2009-2010 leadership includes Adriana Amon, Chair; David Li, Past-Chair; Judy Simeroth, Secretary; Heather Dugdale, Membership Chair; Deanne Hormovitis, Grants Chair; Susan Wintersteen, Events/Grants Celebration, David Allen, Jeremy Bold, Randy Hopp, Mark Jones, Randy koch, Scott Voak and Catherine Jones.
The goal of the members of the 4S Ranch ~ Del Sur Community Foundation is to leverage small resources into having a large community impact.

July 4th carnival & free swim Were a ‘splash’ Local restaurants such as Zocalo, Jamba Juice
and Panera donated coupons and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in the 4S Commons generously donated (200) $5 gift cards which were used throughout the day as raffle prizes. Guests also had the chance to win $25 gift certificates for the Barbeques Galore Cooking School - generously donated by Barbeques Galore - during the DJ games! It was a fun afternoon for all! A very special thank you to all of the event sponsors!
The night ended with a bang as residents descend-ed upon the many parks in 4S Ranch to watch the fireworks which were launched from Monterey Ridge
Elementary School. Two hundred glow-in-the-dark wrist bands and glowing glasses were passed out by the HOA staff prior to the fireworks display.

Danceology Has Moved!
Danceology may be one of the most well-known businesses in 4S Ranch and is about to become an even more popular establishment. Danceology has moved to a new location in the industrial park at the corner of Camino San Bernardo and Thornmint. Danceology has transformed into The Danceology Performing Arts Campus. With over 14,000 square feet, the new studio will house six large dance rooms all with state-of-the-art floor-ing. There will also be a snack shack, a Starbucks machine, and a study room for students to use between classes. Danceology Performing Arts Campus will now be one of the largest dance studios on the West Coast.
Don’t miss the Grand Opening Celebration on August 15 & 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.! All summer programs will be held at the new location. To be a part of the magic, call Danceology today at 858-613-1155.

Girls On The Run Returns Bigger and Better
Girls on the Run is a life-changing after-school program for 8—12 year old girls. Young girls are empowered with a greater self-awareness, a sense of achievement, and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, contented and self-confident women.
The program is expanding in Rancho Bernardo for the fall 2009 season to include both Stone Ranch Elementary and Monterey Ridge Elementary. Stone Ranch Elementary site will be Tuesday and Thursdays from 2:45 to 4 p.m. and Monterey Ridge site will be Mondays and Thursdays 3:45 to 5 p.m.
Scholarships are available at all sites. Fall 2009 sessions begin the week of September 14 and space is limited, so register now! If you are interested in coaching for the fall, Coaches & Assistant Coaches are needed at both Rancho Bernardo sites.

BaseballCongratulations to all of the 4S Ranch Little
League All-Star players, managers and coaches. As the program continues to grow, so does the quality of play in 4S Ranch.
In the 9-10 Division, the 4S All-Stars advanced out of pool play, and made a run at the Championship before losing in the semi-finals. The team was managed by Brian Ullrich and coached by Scott Hashimoto.
The 10-11 4S All-Star team enjoyed the luxury of playing at home as 4S Ranch hosted the District 31 tournament. The homecooking fed them well as they made it all the way to the semi-finals before losing to tournament champion, Encinitas National. The team was managed by Phil Greer and coached by Matt Feringa.
In the Majors Division, the 4S All-Stars opened the tournament with one of the most exciting games in League history. Solo home runs by Nicho Villalobos and Dillon Kidwell kept the game close. With two runners on base and 4S Ranch trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the last inning, Adam Connors launched the first home run of his career to win the game 5-4. Unfortunately, 4S ended up tied with two other teams in pool play and did not advance based on the tie-breaker system. The team was managed by Ken Connors and coached by Steve Villalobos.
The Juniors Division 4S All-Stars made an unprecedented run to the Championship game of their tournament before losing a close game to Escondido National. This marks the first time in League history that a 4S Ranch All-Star team has made it to the Championship. The team was managed by Paul Gallant and coached by Tim Rogers and Chad Sixt.
SoftballOn July 11, 4S Ranch closed out the
first season it has competed in ASA Girls Softball Tournament Play. This repre-sents the competitive part of the season which is where the All-Stars from 4S traveled to tournaments held throughout Southern California. The 12U team participated in an All-Star tournament in Lakeside in late June and the 10U team participated in 4 tournaments in Lakeside, Poway, Escondido and Rancho Bernardo throughout June and July.
4S Ranch Little League - Fall Ball Sign ups
Sign ups for Fall Ball are continuing on Saturday, August 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside of Starbucks. Fall Ball is a low-key league designed to keep your child’s skills sharp during the off-season and prepare them for the jump to the next division in the Spring. Each team will play one game per week beginning in September and the season will conclude prior to Thanksgiving.
The age limit for Fall Ball is from 6 - 14 years old (6 year olds must have played at least one year of T-Ball). Players will compete in four divisions: A/AA Combo, AAA, Majors and Juniors. There will not be a T-Ball division in Fall Ball. For additional information, please visit www.4srll.com.

4S Red Sox Take 2009 Juniors Division Championship Tournament
The 4S Ranch Red Sox finished regular league play with 13 wins and 8 losses putting them in a respect-able 4th place for the season. When the division champi-onships came around, they came out on top, winning in only 4 games with scores of 11-0, 7-5, 13-1 and 7-6. The 4S Red Sox beat the CMR Diamondbacks in a very exciting last inning comeback in the Championship Game. Congratulations Red Sox!
Resident Hockey Player advances to national Festival
Hockey is not a well-known sport in a place like San Diego, but to Troy Grahl it’s a sport he sees in his future. It’s quite an honor to be selected to National Festival, especially for San Diego hockey players.
It all started back in mid December with the Southern California Select Camp, the first of three try-outs to get to the National Festival. Each year USA Hockey runs a National Select Festival in Rochester, NY for the top players in the United States at the 14, 15, 16, and 17 year old age brackets, where they track and recruit players for the National Development Team.
This season, the Jr. Gulls will have strong representation in Rochester sending five players from San Diego. In the 14 year old bracket, Troy Grahl was one of those five. Congratulations Troy and best of luck in New York!

gyminny Kids hosts tyson fitness challenge
Gyminny Kids, Inc. has taken an active role in helping kids become more physically fit by hosting the Tyson Fitness Challenge, a joint initiative of USA Gymnastics (national governing body for gymnastics in the US) and Tyson Foods. Created under the guidance of fitness and nutrition experts, the Tyson Fitness Challenge has two goals: helping today’s youth get more physically fit and helping kids who are fighting illnesses by raising money for Children’s Miracle Network.
Geared toward youngsters, ages 4-16, the program is not about teaching gymnastics skills, but using gymnastics to help kids become more physically fit, as well as learn about a well-balanced diet. Although classes began on July 15, they run through September 3. Classes focus on nutrition and core strength. Each child is taught to set realistic goals and will learn how to suc-cessfully follow through in attaining their goals.

people in your neighborhood
I would venture a guess that at least three quar-ters of the 4S Ranch population has frequented our local Starbucks at least once in the last 4 years and has been greeted by the extremely personable and cheery Gail Edwards. I am not a regular in the strictest sense of the word, but whenever I do go and Gail is there. She is always saying ‘hi’ to someone by name and she knows exactly what coffee concoc-tion the person would like to have. I was always impressed by her exuberance and decided to let everyone know what the woman behind the counter was all about.
Gail lives in Ramona with her husband Dan and their 4 children, Elizabeth, 15, Logan, 12, Katherine, 11 and Mark, 4. Dan works at one of the business parks along Camino Del Norte. Gail met her husband for cof-fee one day and as fate would have it, she began to chat with the Starbucks Manager. Gail began working there shortly thereafter. Gail had a 4 month old at home and didn’t need a full-time job so the opportunity was ideal. Gail LOVES coffee and she LOVES people.
Gail believes that with so many zillions of jobs out there that people should work in an area that makes them happy. Her favorite quote high-lights that theory, “Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.” She is definitely a people person and views herself as being in the people business,
not the coffee business. Gail gives the job her all, but unfortunately discovered that she has a severe case of tendonitis in her arm, shoulder and neck. Despite the pain, she persists and keeps up the sunny disposition. What is Gail’s favorite coffee drink? That would be a double tall white mocha. “It’s the perfect blend of sweet and coffee,” she affirms. On the other hand, it’s not her favorite coffee drink to make. That honor goes to the Cappuccino and the Espresso Macchiato. Making those drinks requires a bit of skill. Since there is lots
of white, thick foam involved, it’s more of a challenge to create. When Gail is not at Starbucks, she loves just playing with her fam-
ily. She is also quite the karaoke aficionado, singing both at home and at the local hamburger joint on Karaoke Night. She loves to read and is an amateur photographer who enjoys photographing landscapes and weather anomalies. She recently spent some much needed time away in Palm Springs with Dan. Gail was recently promoted to shift manager which is no surprise. She absolutely adores her 4S customers and it comes across in everything she does. Although Gail does have physically challenging days, she said she wouldn’t give up her job here in 4S for anything!
Well, we all appreciate your cheerfulness, Gail. Keep up the great work. We’ll be visiting you soon!

days of school (August 20-September 9) Kindergarten hours will be 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. Starting September 10, Kindergarten will follow the regular daily schedule (8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. M., T., Th., F and 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Wed.). Along with the rising rates of obesity in children, the rates of type 2 diabetes in youth are also rising. The following are some tips to help your children:
• Have healthy snacks on hand such as instant oatmeal, fruits and vegetables, peanuts in the shell, and low fat cheese sticks.
• Never allow eating in front of television or other screens. This pro-motes poor awareness of how full or satisfied you or your children are and typically leads to overeating.
• Limit fruit juice and juice drinks -- make water or milk (prefer-ably 1 percent fat or less) the preferred beverage. Avoid soda not only because of the sugar content, but caffeine content that might become addictive to sensitive young bodies.
• Involve children in meal planning and grocery shopping; teach about nutrition along the way by reading food labels and noting
the types of nutrients that are found in various foods.

Schedule a physical with your doctor. Asthma is a disease of the lungs that makes breathing difficult at times. Common triggers for asthma include: viral infections (like a cold), tobacco smoke, dust mites, animal dander, cockroaches, molds, pollen, sprays and strong odors. The key indicators for the diagnosis of asthma include:
wheezing, cough, difficulty breathing, and chest tightness. These symptoms can range from mild and infrequent to severe and per-sistent. For children with asthma, you need to contact your physi-cian if you notice any of the following situations: the need to use a rescue inhaler (albuterol) more than twice a week, waking up at night coughing more than two times per month, or refilling the res-cuer inhaler prescription more than two times per year. These can be indications that other asthma medications are needed to help control symptoms. Patient education and frequent monitoring by healthcare professionals is the key for optimal control of asthma
symptoms.

During the ritual back to school physical a lot of these issues are picked up and they generally refer to a hernia. This is why the doc-tors say “turn your head and cough”. These can occur at any age with usually a lifetime 10% risk. Once found the child should see a specialist and defer sports until evaluated. Academics won’t need to be deferred. Severe pain or a lump that will not go down may be an emergent situation and should be seen immediately.
The most common hernia is inguinal near the groin. It affects boys more than girls and the repair is most commonly an outpatient surgical procedure taking about an hour. Full activity can resume in 3-4 weeks. So remember to get this evaluated by your primary care
physician, they will know if a surgeon is needed.

For kids of all ages to get back into the routine of school, sports and
other activities, fueling bodies and minds with the proper nutrition is essen-
tial to success. Here are some tips to remind all of us what it takes to be at
our best every day.
Eat breakfast every day! Skipping meals - especially breakfast- deprives you
of the energy and nutrients we need to get through the day. Our brains need
fuel to focus and process new information!
Afterschool snacks are also important for growing kids. These snacks
should include nutritious foods such as any type of fruit or vegetable, dairy
product, whole grain bread or cereals. Some examples include: cheese que-
sadilla on a whole wheat tortilla, cut up fruit with a small handful of nuts,
or a whole grain breakfast cereal and low fat milk. Avoid using chips, cookies
or candy as afterschool snacks; these should be considered ‘once in a while’
foods.
Plan for 5 to 9 servings of fruit and vegetables per day. Start out your
morning with some raisins on your cereal and small glass of 100% juice
- that’s 2 servings right there! Have some carrot sticks and a banana with
lunch, and a salad and a ½ cup or more of cooked vegetable with dinner.
Include veggies on your pizza, and remember, tomato sauce is full of disease-
fighting nutrients as well.
Use high fiber and whole grain breads and cereals. These foods are packed
with nutrients for our bodies, such as the B vitamins and vitamin E. The
fiber helps us keep our digestive system working properly. It’s like exercise
for our GI tract!
Keep well hydrated. Heated rooms in home, school and offices, as well as
the dry air outside can make us lose extra water through our skin and respi-
ratory system. Drinking water throughout the day, as well as eating foods
high in water content (fruits and vegetables), keeps our body well lubricated
and our immune systems working well. If weight management is a concern,
avoid calorie ridden fluids such as sodas, energy drinks and more than 1 cup
of fruit juice per day. Fluid based calories don’t fill us up as much as solid
foods. Water is best!
Frequent hand washing. This is important in cutting down on the risk of
food infections (sometimes called the “stomach flu”) as well as the colds that
travel quickly when we are inside more. Frequent hand washing is even more
critical now with the increasing occurrences of H1N1 or Swine flu.
Avoid eating in front of TV, computer screens, while driving, reading or doing homework. This type of “distracted” eating promotes excess weight
gain just as much as choosing less healthful foods. For best results, this rule
should apply to all family members.

Bugs and rodents are not exactly at the forefront for topics of con-versation, but when you grow up in a home in which your father was an entomologist, it does come up. Frank Ogwaro was raised in Africa where termites are not only the size of a small child, but they can also be a delicacy depending on what social class you come from. The African population views bugs differently than most US citizens, but eradication is still a neces-sity. Because of his father’s profession, Frank took an interest in insects and learned quite a bit about them.
When most 14 year olds are thinking about sports, movies and pizza, Frank was thinking about staying alive. He found himself fighting in a rebel war for six months and although it was a harrowing experience, he grew up fast and learned a lot about life and perseverance. Fortunately, his father was able to relocate the family to the United States and Frank was able to live a “normal” teenage life, just a few short years later.
Frank met his wife Mari at Poway High School in 1988. Together they have started ‘Insect & Rodent Solutions’. They went through the usual tri-als and tribulations of a new business, but because of Frank’s background and strong determination to succeed, the business eventually took off. The first five years, the business was run out of their small apartment, but they
eventually moved it to a commercial building in Leucadia and then to their new, bigger and better location in Vista.
Insect & Rodent Solutions is a full service pest control company. For general pest control, they schedule monthly, bimonthly and quarterly visits. This can be customized for ants, rodents and gophers or for any one or two of these services depending on your needs. Beyond these standard pest control services, they also specialize in termite solutions. The first line of defense is done in-house by injecting the wood members where the termites have infiltrated. They avoid fumigation as much as possible and are typically very successful with their first line of defense. After the termites have been eliminated, they offer yearly contracts to inspect for any termite recurrences. They inspect for both drywood and subterranean termites.
