PRESENTATION

The University of Udine Architectural SummerSchool called “Bacco’s. Designing the WineProcess”, will take place on June 2018 in FriuliVenezia Giulia Region, North-East of Italy.

This innovative project is organized by theDepartment of Architecture of the University incollaboration with major wine-producing companiesin the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia – a place wherethe local landscape has been strongly attached tothe wine culture for centuries.

The Summer school offers an intense seven-dayprogram, made by morning and afternooncourses/laboratories/on-site work in various fields of interests with concrete opportunities of design, planning and organization.

Students will discuss together the architectureSummer School themes, will visit the wineries toknow their design needs will have up to four days of workshops on the theme and will present theirworks. Moreover, they will be involved in the territorythrough the participation to touristic trips and extracurricula activities.

Participants could choose from large-scale activities, such as product design (glasses or bottles),communication assignments (labels, fair expositions)and of course actual architectural and panoramicplanning (winery establishment and landscape).

This is a great opportunity of work on-site inauthentic wine producing areas, in order to providean added value in every participant’s professionalagenda.

Please do not hesitate to contact us for any doubt.

DIDACTIC STRUCTURE OF THE SUMMER COURSE

Wine has so many connotations. We would like todevelop some of them through drawing andplanning. From the territory to the table, the winecrosses design and architecture in different ways.Students from foreign universities and students fromthe University of Udine will visit the area aroundUdine and will work together in order to visualizenew vineyards, wineries, bottles, glasses, reliving thewine supply chain through design practice.

The project is based on three different tables, whichare managed by the same number of senior tutors.

The tables stand for different scales of the Designingthe Wine Process project.

Table 1: designing wineA bottle, a glass, a label as the final objet d'art thatbrings wine to our table and through its shapecommunicates the origins of the wine culture, thecharacteristics of the winery and the wineproduction process.

Table 2: designing wineryA place where wine rests in deep silence and shapesits qualities. The complexity of the wineryestablishment planning and design is related to thefact, that these kind of places, on the one hand, must represent the specific culture of the wineproducer and, on the other hand, guarantee throughits’ structure the specific climatic and environmentalconditions for the best maturation of the product.

Table 3: designing landscape of wine cultureMore and more parts of the Italian landscape are"invaded" by the vineyard. The risk of a landscapecolonization must be balanced with a greatcommercial opportunity of one of the leadingproducts of our rural culture. Designing the winelandscape is the goal of this third table.
