    What is it?This innovative degree programmeallows students to combine theoreticalperspectives in English and Media withpractical vocational skills in journalism.As well as a rich and varied academicfocus, the course also benefits fromexciting extra-curricula opportunities,including visiting media professionalsand cultural excursions. Students alsohave the opportunity to contribute toand co-edit Cardiff's Calling, theUniversity’s student guide and Nexus,the University's creative writingmagazine.

    Who is this programme aimed at?The programme is aimed at anyone who wishesto combine theory and practice, providingstudents with strong communication andanalytical skills that are highly valued in today’semployment market. These skills are reinforcedby the opportunity for student work placements.The course is particularly suited to anyone withan interest in film, media and sport journalism.Graduates from the course have pursued careersin a variety of industries, including: • Media • Journalism • Publishing • Education • Public relations • Marketing • Heritage • Postgraduate study at both Masters and

    PhD level.

    What will I get out of the programme?English: The study of English will engage withyour enthusiasm for reading and literature, andintroduce you to advanced critical thinking in theform of theoretical practice. The degreeinvestigates the foundations of contemporaryliterature via an examination of the culturalnarratives we tell ourselves.

    Contemporary Media:This part of the degree combines theoreticalanalysis of contemporary media, such as film,television, music and digital technology withpractical skills in writing and producingjournalism. Particular focus is given to ‘specialistjournalism’, such as film, music and sportjournalism.

    All modules are taught by academic staff who areactive researchers and industry professionals.

    How does the assessment work?Assessment consists of a mixture of creativework (producing a portfolio), assessed seminarpresentations and essays.

    How long does it usually take?Full-time three years. Part-time study also available.

    Extra-CurriculaThroughout the year, students are invited toattend theatre trips, films and other culturalevents held in Cardiff. The Department alsoregularly invites external speakers to givepresentations and readings.
