Greetings to Region 2 and Best Wishes for theNew Year of 2012. Now that the holidays areover and holiday performances have taken place,

we are looking ahead and making plans for Region 2'sconvention in Dearborn on April 19‐22. Your regionalmanagement team has also been planning a variety ofother regional events for 2012, so be sure to look overthe calendar of events found elsewhere in this issueand mark your calendars. We encourage all of you totake advantage of the wealth of information on ourregion’s website www.sweetadelinesregion2.org As you plan ahead for your 2012 chapter shows, besure to make use of the Chapter Date Clearance Formthat is downloadable from our website. By sendingthat form to me, the event will be included on theregional calendar of events. If there is anything your RMT can do to help make2012 a great year for your chapter members, be sureand let a member of the RMT know.

DIRECTOR CERTIFICATION PROGRAM# Peggi Starkey - DCP Coordinator

There are openings in Region 2 for new applicantsin the DCP. Contact me at (810) 937‐5071 or [email protected] This is an excellent

program open not only to directors who are not yetcertified, but also to assistant directors, sectionleaders, and YES even “Molly Members” who want tobecome more educated about the art of singingbarbershop music. DPC is an independent study of classes in twocategories: 1. Musical/Technical Skills and 2.Management/Communication Skills. Materials are ordered directly from Sweet AdelinesInternational. (www.sweetadelineintl.org) under the“Education” tab. Then look for “programs.” There youcan download the table of contents to see a list oftopics covered. It has the application form there aswell. Fee for the class is $75. The modules are alsopurchased through the site for $110. Once in the program, you study at your own pace.There is no deadline to finish the classes. The classesare offered at the regional functions. (I will contact youvia email.) You can take as few or as many classes youwant at a time. I usually recommend three to getthrough the program more quickly. Classes are heldfor an hour. You can even take classes over if you wanta higher score. To earn the title of Certified Director (ApprovedDirector for members) you’ll teach your chorus a newsong, be critiqued on your directing skills, and havechorus members answer a few surveys on yourcommunication skills and teaching skills. It’s EASY! And it’s FUN! When you are done, you’ll feelmore confident in your work with the chorus and yourunderstanding of Sweet Adelines.

GLOBAL MEMBERSHIP EVENT# Donna Brichta - Membership Coordinator

Happy New Year, Region 2! I sincerely hope that you all had awonderful holiday with family and friends. No matter whatreligion you are or what you believe in, the holiday season

always seems to bring family and friends together to makememories that last a lifetime.

And what an exciting way to start2012, with a Global MembershipEvent. Sweet Adelines Internationalhas initiated that, in January, we havemembership events in our chapters. As a whole, our membership aroundthe world has declined. The economy,aging out, job situations, and manyother factors have contributed to thisdecrease in numbers. We all feel theloss of members having to choosebetween Sweet Adelines, and their job.Or the loss of a member due to jobrelocation, or the loss of a job.Unfortunately we have also lostmembers due to a serious illness or adeath.

We need to rebuild our organization by getting out there andrecruiting new members. Sweet Adelines International has set up onits website wonderful ideas, and helpful ways for your chapter tomarket themselves, and the organization as a whole. Each chapter has a membership chairman but it’s NOT a one‐person job. Each and every member has the responsibility to get outthere and recruit members. I know you are all saying “I’ve talked toall my female family members, and my friends and no one isinterested.” And that might be true. But why not approach themagain? You may just ignite an interest in them. This might be theopportunity they have been waiting for. It just might be the righttime in their lives to do something for themselves. There are so many ways that each chapter can bring women totheir rehearsals. Plan a special membership night withrefreshments, have a theme, select a new piece of music that thechorus hasn’t sung, and teach it to everyone. Have amother/daughter night, where each member brings another motherand/or daughter to rehearsal. With the Super Bowl fast approaching, have a “tailgate” party night,with refreshments and everyone wears their team’s colors andbrings a friend. Make sure to spotlight your chorus with display boards of picturesof your chorus performing, having fun, at rehearsals – anything thatwill say to prospective members “come join the fun.” We ALL need to take an active part in bringing in new members.We all frequent places where we can put fliers for women to see.Beauty salons, nail salons, bowling alleys, doctors and dentistsoffices, grocery stores, churches, libraries, restaurants – so manyplaces to advertise our wonderful organization. Ask if you can hanga flier in their window or on a bulletin board. Make sure that yourcontact information is readily available. It’s up to each of us to promote Sweet Adelines. Make your NewYear’s resolution to recruit new members to your chapter and toSweet Adelines. We all need to “teach the world to sing” and getmore women “hooked on harmony.”

Happy New Year, Region 2! As we go forward in this newyear of 2012, let us celebrate the many friends andgood times we have experienced in Sweet Adelines and

then look forward to continued enjoyable experiences as wegather in our choruses, quartets, music schools andconventions and yes, even in our business meetings. We havealso had to say “until we meet again” to some special friendsthis last year whom we will always remember. They madeour lives richer and have left their mark in our lives. I look forward to seeing you all in the upcoming schools andconventions planned by your regional management team andstaff. The January 20‐21 Winter Regional at the ThomasEdison Inn in Port Huron will be a blast! Come and harmonizewith your friends, including new songs, “Tuxedo Junction”and “I’d Like to Teach The World To Sing.” Music will beavailable on site. Hear the New Beginnings Novice QuartetContest on Friday evening followed by a quartet parade of allquartets wishing to sing. The Young Women in Harmonyraffle items will be available then, ready for your bids. Saturday brings you more singing and great musiceducation classes. Patti Cole from London Chorus brings you“Focus: Maximizing Creativity in your Presentations.” You canlearn and retain through various enjoyable exercises whileidentifying the musical character in your songs to enhanceyour presentation. Chris Noteware from Song of the Lakes Chorus willinvolve you in her class to reach singers of all ages, “It’s AllAbout ME,” and will have you singing tags, breaking intogroups at times and celebrating YOU in honor of ourInternational Global Open House Membership Drive forJanuary. After a great lunch, it’s time to get more computer savvywith “Learning Words for Dummies,” as we learn from LisaGilkey, Region 2 finance coordinator, from Great LakesChorus as she helps us understand the modern jargon andtechnical maneuvers to operate and communicate oncomputers. Find out how to locate websites, see what isavailable on the Sweet Adelines International site, hear of the

educational information available there, and much more. Then you will not want to miss our Four Star HarmonyYWIH Quartet Contest planned by Joan and Jill Kienitz andstaff, and celebrate our young ladies entering the barbershopworld of singing. We will also recognize the Cardinal MooneyHigh School Choir as Region 2 presents a memorial gift tothem in memory of Anne Kotchman, their former director.Anne was also assistant director of Shoreline Sound Chorus,baritone in Fusion quartet, member of the Purple RibbonGang through past quartet champions, 4 Shore, and my verydear friend. Saturday evening continues with yet more singing and funas we get to hear prospective Harmony Gateway Chorusfrom the Davison area perform for us for the first time. NancyLiedel from Fenton Lakes Chorus will emcee, taking us intoComedy Ensemble Performances to keep you laughing duringthe evening. And, it’s not too late to join in for this funactivity. We all have fun songs in our repertoire, so come andsing for us! Then you will have another chance to sing alongwith Liddi with “I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing.” YWIHraffle winners will be announced; you may take home a prizewhile contributing to our YWIH worthy cause. We hope you are planning to attend Winter Regional in Port Huron. We have been busy planning fun‐filled quartetactivities for that weekend. Friday night, novice quartets in the region, debut at the New Beginnings Contest. So far, wehave two quartets registered to compete and one mic‐testing quartet with members from Regions 2 and 17. If your

new quartet is interested, competitors must sign up at the registration desk no later than 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening. Thecontest will begin at 8:30 p.m. Following New Beginnings, all quartets in the region will be asked to sing two songs at thequartet parade. We ask that you consider singing for Region 2 on Friday night! If you are interested in receiving coaching foryour quartet during the weekend, contact Leslie Rawlings at [email protected]. We will have a sign‐up sheet available atthe registration desk for this as well. Another important date is looming! The deadline to register for the regional quartetcontest is February 21! Harrisville Harmony Weekend 50th Anniversary ~~ from Linda LiddicoattI am inviting you to join us in Harrisville, Michigan the weekend of August 30 ‐ September 2

The Harrisville Arts Council is planning many extra events to celebrate this 50th anniversary! There is a Quartet Fest on Friday evening at theGreenbush Golf Course. There is a family picnic at the Harbor on Saturday evening at 5, followed by the big show featuring senior champs

Resisting‐A‐Rest, Overture, and finally, Power Play to end it all! Immediately after the show, the arts council will have a display of fireworks overthe harbor. Of course, the huge arts and crafts show in town will be there for your perusal as well as Saturday and Sunday.

I am inviting quartets and choruses in our region to plan to attend this weekend.

CertifiedDirector, JillWatson . . .joined the GrandTraverse Chorusin 2002 andbecame theirfront‐linedirector inOctober 2011. Jill has loved

music all of her life. She enjoyed singingin school, played flute and was afeatured soloist on many occasions. Herclaim to fame was being the “behind thecurtain singing voice” of the Tin Manand the scarecrow in her sixth gradeproduction of “The Wizard of Oz!” Gogirl! Always an active member of thechorus, Jill has served as bass sectionleader, music team member, marketingchair, assistant director, co‐director andhas been the annual show programcoordinator for many years. She singsbass in her medal‐winning quartet,“Shashay” and loves the thrill offour‐part harmony. Quote from Jill: “Singing speaks to meand makes me smile! I am so glad tohave discovered the Grand TraverseChorus at this stage in my life and amproud to have been given theopportunity to stand in front of thisamazing group of women.”

Laura Hotelling . . . joined theMichigan Northern Lights Chorus in2005 and has served as both presidentand baritone section leader during hertenure. She became front‐line directorin December 2010. Her musical background includessinging from the age of five, church

choir, piano, bandand theater. Sheteaches Spanishand English atGaylord HighSchool in Michiganand also directs thehigh school dramaclub. Laura’s maingoals for herchorus are to helprebuild theirmembership andcontinue to developgood musical skills

and stage performance confidence forall her singers.

Certified Director Maria Christian . . . has been a member of SweetAdelines for nine years. In that time shehas served as a valuable bass singer andsection leader for the Shoreline SoundChorus. She has also achieved the honorof being a three‐time regional quartetchampion! Maria served as co‐directorof the Song the Lakes Chorus for a yearand directed on contest stage spring of2011.

She is now the sole front‐line directorof the Song of the Lakes Chorus andhopes to encourage her members toalways sing with joy and passion whilemastering the vocal skills andtechniques that barbershop singingrequires. Quote from Maria: “I’m havinga blast!”

Liana Jennings, Festival Soundsdirector . . . joined our organizationwhile living in Toronto in 1999. Shethen moved to London, Ontario andjoined the London Chorus soon afterdue to her husband’s change of jobs.She has also been a member of theGrand Harmony Chorus during hertenure and has always sung baritone. Liana’s musical background includesboth high school and college choirs butshe was finally made to feel the mostconfident of her singing abilities onlyafter joining our organization. After moving to London and becominga member of that chorus Liana startedtheir YWIH chorus with her daughterbeing a singer. Quote from Liana: “I am thrilled to bethe director of the Festival SoundsChorus and my short time goal is tohelp them prepare for their upcomingspring show. My longtime goal is takingthe chorus back to Region 2 contest in2013.” Liana believes in the healing power ofmusic and she knows that singingrejuvenates and helps her each week.

The YWIH team is excitedly preparing for our firstYWIH quartet contest in two years! While we onlyhave a few entrants, it's always a treat to see our

young women singing and enjoying our craft.

We will also have a tribute to our sorely lost talent anddevoted YWIH supporter, Anne Kotchman. A treat is instore as Anne's former school choir will be performing forus on January 21 with their new teacher, Bea Wassenberg.Let's give her a warm Region 2 welcome. Knowing she isfilling the position for our beloved Anne, I'm sure she willappreciate your enthusiasm for what she has been doingwith the group.

Anne's presence is already missed as we make plans forour June 23 Got Harmony Day Camp. While we'll never beable to replace her, or her dedication to this program, weare fortunate that Lynne Peirce will be filling in as one ofour day camp directors along with our returning directorDiane Catellane, Lynne and her quartet, Novelty Shop, willbe serving as this years female “teaching quartet.” WhileEbb 'n' Flow, current Pioneer District champs of theBarbershop Harmony Society and CMU, will teach the boys.

If you would like to volunteer to help out with the daycamp or evening show, contact Jill (or Joan Kienitz at [email protected]). Any and all help is welcome andappreciated. Now's the time to be on the lookout for youngsingers and invite them to be part of the fun. Last year wehad singers as young as six years old. “Technically” the agerange is 11 to 25, but exceptions are always made for thosewho really want to participate.

Silent auction donations help the Got Harmony Camp!Thank you, Region 2. For those who contributed to theYoung Singers Foundation Silent Auction in Houston,Texas, your generous donations were a welcome additionto this silent auction. Because of kind contributions likeyours, the YSF netted around $18,000 this year. As you know, this Foundation strives to support andencourage young people all over the world to sing. Itprovides scholarships and grants to help these youngsingers. In fact, Region 2 received grants whenever we applied forthem for the YWIH Program. Last year, we received a$1,500 grant for our Got Harmony Camp. We have againapplied for another one for the June 23 camp. Grants likethis as well as the $600 grant received from theBarbershop Harmony Society's Harmony Foundation helpsus keep the camp registrations at a very reasonable costfor the youth campers. CARILLON BELLES CHORUS Simcoe, OntarioStephanie Wilson

The Carillon Belles Chorus of Simcoe,Ontario, are seen here providingsome Christmas entertainment for

one of the local churches this pastChristmas season. Directing the chorus isJoan Minns. Heidi Bowman is assistantdirector. The group is growing in popularity in thecommunity, as they recently packed theLighthouse Festival Theatre in Port Doverat their annual concert. Guest starring atthe concert were the Novelty Shop fromMichigan. (How they made it all the way toPort Dover in their precarious conditionsis a mystery!) Also, the Young Women inHarmony, directed by Dr. Sandra Reid,made an appearance at the performance.They sang some pieces on their own, andalso sang a Sweet Adelines Young Womenin Harmony choral medley of "Harmonizethe World.” Currently, the Carillon Belles are busyrehearsing for the upcoming competitionin April. This will be their third timeparticipating in the Region 2 competitionsince becoming chartered members ofSweet Adelines International in 2007.

First and foremost, we'd like to thank Region 2for their amazing support and generosity in ourjourney to the Harmony Classic Competition in

Houston, Texas. And then our heartfeltcongratulations to London Chorus, Spirit of DetroitChorus, and Overture Quartet. Region 2 was wellrepresented during that week of Internationalconvention. We can't begin to tell you how thrilledwe are to be the Division A Silver Medalists! Imaginethe hotel's surprise at a bunch of nuns celebrating inthe hotel lounge! We would be remiss if we didn't mention ourcoaches, Jim Arns and Linda Liddicoatt. They feed usconstantly. We also had a truly amazing session withMo Field. (Thanks to Maria Christian for setting thatup for us!) One of the highlights of our trip was the train rideto Houston. It was a beautiful ride through this greatcountry of ours. And what fun to share the train carwith members of Spirit of Detroit Chorus! Lots of fun, laughter and singing!We'll definitely be looking into that mode of transportation again. When we returned from Houston, it was time to focus on our annual Christmasconcert. Our concert was a rousing success! Our show opened with a guitar andflute duo, Our guests were the Highlander Way Middle School Choir. They alsojoined us in our arrangement of “Carol of the Bells.” Thanks to Kylie Meinka(their teacher) for including them. Kylie is a member of Fenton Lakes Chorusand in‐house quartet, Wait 4 It who entertained our audience as well. Then it was on to caroling in Frankenmuth. Audiences seem more joyful thistime of year. We had a surprise visit from Jennifer Perry‐Edwards of MoxieLadies! Ya never know who's listening. This is our busiest time of the year. Wealso sang at the tree lighting and Holiday Walk at Whiting Auditorium in Flint. Now that the Christmas holidays are settling down, we have started workingon our package for regional competition. What a wonderful and busy fall thechorus has had! Our annual show“On the Air, Harmony Tonight”

was a great success and so much fun. Theold radio show format gave us the idea toinclude short advertising jingles for someof the businesses who bought programads, and they were a hit! They wereperformed by quartets and smallensembles, so everyone got to participate.

Other performances included our annual lawn show for thePavilions with the local men’s barbershop chorus, a newvenue at The Church in The Hills in Bellaire (who has alreadyasked us back again for next year), the Boyne City Veteran’sDay show called “America Sings,” and our local Rotary clubluncheon meeting.

Aren’t coaching weekends just the best? We certainly enjoyedworking with Vickie Gibson in November, and the end ofJanuary brings us Sylvia Karpinski. What a help this is withvoice placement, preparing for competition, improving ourskills, choreography ‐‐ everything!

The Christmasseason waswonderful thisyear even withoutthe snow.DowntownTraverse Cityhired us for thelighting of the treeand arrival ofSanta ceremony,plus two morenights of singingcarols in andaround the stores.

What great feedback we get from folks! Our night of singingat assisted living homes culminated with a group dinner atTravino’s Restaurant in Acme and impromptu performancesin the restaurant and bar. A rewarding and fun evening. Ourannual Christmas party rounded out the activities and we’reback to business on Jan. 3.

Perhaps the biggest change at the Grand Traverse Chorus isthe election of Jill Watson as our director in October. We areexcited to begin this new journey with her and are lookingforward to a fun and productive 2012 under her leadership.Jill also completed the DCP program and is now a CertifiedDirector. Congratulations, Jill!

HEARTLAND HARMONY CHORUS West Branch, Michigan ~~ Debbie Walker

Happy New Year 2012! IfHeartland Harmony’supcoming year is as eventful

as 2011, we will have no time forthe Mayan End Date. Those Mayansshould have listened to theharmony of the spheres while theywere star gazing. Back to earth: Our fledglinggroup, Heartland Harmony, wasgratified to win the Novice ChorusAward at April’s competition 2011.From there we sang ourselves intothe heart of the communitythrough several noteworthyone‐night stands including WestBranch’s Fabulous Fridays Art andWine Walks. (Yes, the wine kept usin tune.) We sang for mothers on Mother’s Day. We sang forbirthdays, weddings, art fairs and churches, to name a few. In July we retreated to Crawford Lake in Kalkaska for asing‐along weekend with special guest, Chris Noteware. Alsojoining our chorus were members from the SunriseHarmony Chorus and Michigan Northern Lights Chorusand two members from Spirit of Detroit Chorus. Weblended our talents at eating, swimming, boating andharmonizing. Our dear director, Susan Heimburger encouraged us to blendother art with our harmony. We lent our voices to HeartlandHarmony member, Maggie Martella‐Waldruff’s children’splay, “The Snowman Story.” We sang our part in the WestBranch Kiwanis Variety Show where our very own quartetsang for the first time. And we thank our big sister chorus,Great Lakes Chorus, for inviting us to participate in their“Spooktacular 3‐D”. That was a big thrill for us. Our biggest production was the musical murder mysterydinner, “Only the Good Die Young” written by HeartlandHarmony member Debbie Walker and her writing colleague,Marylou Bugh. Members sang, acted, decorated, cooked,cleaned and publicized. Of all our events, the mystery dinnerattracted the most attention in our area and will be producedagain by popular demand.

2012 will be ayear ofchange‐ourbiggest year to“Harmonizethe World.”

Did you know that Heart of Essex hasreal heros among us? Our doublequartet, Unlimited Harmony,

performed for a seniors Christmas luncheonat the Salvation Army South WindsorCommunity Church, and a totallyappreciative audience they were! TheSalvation Army has a long history of singingand love of all things musical! As peoplewere getting ready to leave, one of theseniors took a bad turn and fell to theground. Immediately UH sprang into action!Our two retired ER nurses, Rose Purdy andLindy Fazekas, sprang into action toadminister first aid and president Patwhipped out her cell phone and called 911.Everything was under control within 30seconds! The ambulance took the patient tohospital where he was thoroughly checkedout and released. Way to go ladies! It was really a busy fall for us. DirectorLois and her music committee had a fullagenda for our return from summer hiatus!We started rehearsals even before ourschool venue was open. In September, LindaLiddicoatt came to visit us. It's always niceto see our very first “Mom Coach” and takeher words of musical wisdom to heart! In November we had a full day coachingsession with Sylvia Karpinsky andchoreographer Diane Skowron. We sangand we danced, were expertly coached, sangand danced some more and implementedthe new ideas we had been taught! It was abusy, busy day. We left tired but happy.That night some of our ladies, Sylvia andDiane went to Caesar's to see the mens' acapella group Straight No Chaser. What away to end a Sweet Adelines Day! Midway through November, Heart ofEssex entertained at a fundraiser for one ofour member's family who received stem cell

treatment for lymphocytic leukemia. It wasa very emotional moment for all of us or ourloved ones who have been touched bycancer. One day a cure! Heart of Essexwelcomed two newmembers into our midstthis fall. Mary Jane Finnand Le AnnBechard‐Stiers. You'll beformally introduced toour newbies at contest inApril. Please be sure togive them a heartfeltSweet Ads welcome! We launched into ourChristmas programme inNovember with “JingleBell Rock.” Wait – Is it snowin' and blowin'or dancin' and prancin' first? Aggh! Wefine‐tuned this favourite in time to performit at the annual Christmas Choir Evening atSt. Anne's Church in Tecumseh onNovember 28. Heart of Essex is alwayspleased to help raise funds for Windsor'sDowntown Mission. December saw our chorus entertain at theChristmas open house at Willistead Manor.The audience was very appreciative and itput everybody into a Christmas mood. We cut loose in December with our annualChristmas partay. This year it was “Heart ofEssex Got Talent” hosted by the WonderfulWomen of Windsor Town. We started outwith high‐ and no‐octane punch followed bya sumptuous buffet and dessert. We also celebrated Deb Last's great AuntMaxine's 89th birthday in grand style,complete with candles, cake, and a birthdayserenade! Then it came time for the talent show. W3

performed our “Sing and buy, eat and buy,donate to our cause” song to promote ticketsales for our 50:50 raffle and orientalauction. Later on, people dug deeply intotheir pockets, purses, riser bags, etc. and wewere able to donate $365 each to TheSalvation Army and the Goodfellows ofWindsor! Thank you ladies for yourgenerosity! The Belle River Belles performed“Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.” Itbrought down the house! President Pat wasthe reindeer, Mavis Minney was Grandma,and the other Belles were themuch‐saddened grandkids who sang “but asfor me and Grandpa we believe!” There wasa happy ending because Grandma wasbrought back by a liberal application ofChristmas cheer! Stories were recounted by DianeBrightwell and Fran Ferguson and LindyFazekas and Etna Stefani told jokes. The show was rounded off by director Loisand her sister Pat Bellamy's Sister Act muchto the entertainment of the chorus! We ended the evening by singing ourfavourite Christmas songs, old and new,under the direction of our Lois. Upcoming events for 2012 include aWinter Open House to celebrate SweetAdelines International's “We'd like to Teachthe World to Sing” campaign, a Mother'sDay tea on May 12 at Essex United Church,and our annual show on December 2, not tomention contest in April! Rehearsals resumed in January and we arenow officially in contest mode! We'relooking forward to seeing all of our friendsat the Winter Regional in Port Huron.


LOCK CITIES CHORUS Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario B. A. Maki

Greetings from the delightful women of Lock Cities Chorus. We think we deserve bragging rights for having had half ourchorus participate in the Fall Regional, particularly as we travel

six hours to attend. We have been employing the wonderful ideas andwarm‐ups we learned. The “Alleluia” round became our lead‐in to ourChristmas performances.

Once again, our bigfundraiser, Thanksgivingsupper, at the John WesleyChurch in Sault St. Marie,Ontario was an enormoushit. We sliced and dicedour way throughpreparation on Saturdayand sang and served thatsupper on Sunday in our

“aprony” best. It’s a lot of work with a lot of satisfaction, and it’s anannual tradition that we look forward to every year. It has been a whirlwind preparation and holiday season leading upto our six Christmas performances, commencing November 22 andconcluding December 21. We managed to squeeze in our own holiday celebration at adelightful restaurant, Karl’s, in beautiful downtown Sault Ste. Marie,Michigan. As we are an “international” chorus, comprising bothAmericans and Canadians, we alternate years for our Christmas party.It was the Americans’ turn to entertain us. Karl’s was an ideal settingfor us, as we had a front‐row view of the ships going through the locksand as they close for business to regular patrons, we had the place toourselves. This may be for the preservation of their regular patrons.One should not look too closely at these things. We had a wonderfulevening and our dear Janice Burke had the Midas Touch when it cameto our “penny sale,” an inter‐chorus fundraiser that is expertly craftedby Sonia Madill with help from Deanna Shanahan. “Orange ticket?”;Janice Burke. I don’t know if she invested her pension or whether shewas gifted with the luck of the draw . . . but, I want to thank the rest ofyou for suiting up (and we were gloriously glitzed and glamorous!) Beyond all the holiday festivities, we have been working very hardwith an eye toward our May 6 show, “Divas and Dancing Queens.”Consider this a formal invitation, Region 2. We have brought several numbers out of the tombs and dusted themoff and have recently been introduced to several new numbers. Forthose of us who are new to this chorus and/or who have switchedparts (“jumped ship,” say those whose part we no longer sing) it hasbeen a tich daunting. In the next weeks (and there are only 17 of them, as of this writing)we will be learning lines, choreo and other stage direction. All of thisis in way of celebration of 25 wonderful years as Lock Cities Chorus,that chartered in 1987. It is also a fanfare farewell tribute to ourretiring director, Judy Hendrickson, who has hung in there with us forthe same amount of time. We hope we make her proud.

MICHIGAN NORTHERN LIGHTS CHORUSGaylord, Michigan ~~ Bethany Burghdorf

This past quarter has been a busy one for ourlittle group. We entertained the communitywith our fall show “A Bushel of Song.” We

shared our stage with our brothers in song, theHarmonie Meisters. It was a lot of fun to share theevent with them! We also had many great businessessupporting us through sponsorship, ads and doorprizes. One of our members had a grand idea for acommunity fundraiser. We called it “Cookies for aCause.” It was to be like an open house. At this event,our chorus invited other talented groups andindividuals to perform in ten‐minute segmentsduring a two‐hour period. This was a free eventwhere the public could have cookies, coffee and orpunch as they listened to any or all of the groups. Allwe asked the public to do was make a donation. Thiswas a great success; we collected more than $1,400for The Friendship Housing Center of Gaylord. Yeahteam! We had a great deal of fun during the Christmasholiday season as we sang for the Christmas treelighting in Waters, then the next day we strolled thestreets of Gaylord, caroling as shoppers tookpleasure in finding that perfect gift and welcomingSanta at the start of the shopping season. Anotherimportant part of the season is our tour of manynursing homes in Gaylord and Grayling. Our chorusreally looks forward to these events where we canshare our gift of songwith those unable toget out. Linda Liddicoattdrove up to theNorth Land to workwith Laura Hotelling,our interim director, Laura is workinghard to learn thetricks of the trade asshe used to be one ofus, a bari no less. Now with competition just aroundthe corner there is really a lot to learn. The hardestpart might be to get what she knows into our heads.


SEAWAY SOUNDS CHORUS Sarnia, Ontario ~~ Jo Kulik

Seaway Sounds is as busy asever! We had a very successfulguest night in late September

and increased our membership by20 percent. Our new gals are youngand enthusiastic, jumping in withboth feet and had little difficultylearning two new songs within thefirst four weeks. We look forward toa long relationship as they continueto learn the intricacies ofbarbershop singing. Christmas is a special time for all,but for us the last three years havebeen especially exciting. We havejust completed our third season asthe backup singers for StarbrightChristmas which is staged at theImperial Theatre in Sarnia. Weperformed with a cast ofprofessional singers, all Canadian,who are well known in the theatreindustry across the country. Two of the regular performers,who were missing this year, had keyroles in “Jesus Christ Superstar” thispast season in Stratford and had toforego Starbright this year as theyare preparing to take that show toBroadway. We are so blessed to bepart of this ensemble cast whichstages their annual Christmas showfor four performances, all sold outto very appreciative audiences. Plans are now underway for ourannual retreat in February wherewe polish our contest music and tryto find some time for fun! Wishingeveryone a great 2012.

IT’S 2012!

Let us begin the new year by reflecting on theyear past. After all, isn’t it all about SweetAdelines?

2011 began with the usual hustle and bustle forSpirit. Committees gathered and funds wereraised. We saw housing lists, costume fittings andhad jobs assigned. There were rehearsal plans,coaching schedules and music changes ‐‐ allpreparations for the upcoming spring. It’s funbeing a Sweet Adeline. Spring brought regional competition. Spirit borewitness to a stunning performance as Overturecaptured the gold. Our own Kim Salyer, NanWardin, Dodie LaMarte and Kathy Green wouldjoin us in Houston. Wow! It’s exciting to be aSweet Adeline! As the air warmed to summer, Tuesday nightssaw our chorus rehearsals filled with love,laughter, work and patience. We heard the warmtones coming from the risers. We saw the frontrow dance uplifted by the energy coming fromthose singing behind them. And then we would goover that passage again and again and again. It’snot easy being a Sweet Adeline. Spirit of Detroit had the opportunity to gleanfrom such incredible coaches as Jim Arns, BettyClipman, Carole Kirkpatrick, Renee Porzel andTony DeRosa. Thank you. And, of course, we had ‐‐ and have ‐‐ theprivilege to learn, sing and perform under thedirection of LeAnn Hazlett. Not only can she directbut she can sing! And she’s got great hair! That’simportant for a Sweet Adeline. Then came October and the culmination of our efforts. We would be on stage inHouston, competing for top honors in the organization. First we saw greatachievements by Fenton Lakes Chorus and London Chorus in the Harmony Classic.Congratulations! Then Overture took the stage with a moving performance. Spirit isproud to call them our own. At last our name was called and there we were on stage.All too soon our six minutes were over. Spirit of Detroit was awarded 14th place. Andthat’s 14th out of the 700+ choruses in the world! It’s thrilling being a Sweet Adeline! November came and it’s show time! The Spirit of Detroit Chorus presented “Come FlyWith Spirit” featuring Overture quartet and the reunion of Keepsake quartet. Inaddition to new and proven music, we had the opportunity to perform our showpackage. The audience response was overwhelming, making our show a huge success.It’s gratifying being a Sweet Adeline. On a personal note, let me tell you that I am blessed. I’m a Sweet Adeline and I belongto the Spirit of Detroit Chorus.

From former Region 2 member Judie Sharpe ... The extreme sadness from Region 2 has been overwhelming to me thisholiday season, as I’m sure it has been to all of you. Losing our lovely AnneKotchman early in the fall was unbelievably tragic, and my heart goes out toso many of you who were her good friends. She loved Sweet Adelines, andespecially Young Women in Harmony. It was a joy for me to work with her,and a thrill to have her follow in my footsteps; first as YWIH coordinator forRegion 2, then as the MENC/SAI recipient in 2010. I was so proud of her, andwill always remember her happy spirit and beautiful smile. Region 2 also has special memories of our YWIH Internationalchampionship quartet, Sandstone, who won the competition in 2000. Two ofour wonderful young women have lost their mothers this fall, and I hope thatRegion 2 will continue to take them under your wings, and care about them.Tenor, Grace SchmidtStein lost her mother to cancer on October 29, andLead, Calista ConnerHarmon's mother was killed in a car accident onSeptember 28. They would both have been around the same age as Anne, andall three lived in roughly the same area. I wish the reason for keeping intouch was not sad. I would love to hear happy news from Region 2! I amdoing well in Region 13, and will be taking my chorus to contest this year. Love to you all, and Happy New Year!

SHORELINE SOUND CHORUS Royal Oak, Michigan ~~ Mary Linda Gauche

So many words have been said. Somany memories have been shared.So much love has flowed. May all of

this continue; may it always be a part ofus: Shoreline Sound Chorus, Fusion,4Shore, Region 2, and International.May we keep Anne Kotchman's spiritand kindness in our good deeds, herenthusiasm in our endeavors, her lovein our relations with each other and hersweet soul in our hearts forever. The nation’s ten year observance of9/11 was poignantly remembered byShoreline as we sang first in GrossePointe Village at their annual blockparty and then in Madison Heights at St.Vincent’s parish picnic. Bothexperiences were so rewarding. Wewere also privileged to performdowntown on the beautiful River Walkat the ALS Benefit very early on aSeptember morning. We benefitted from two separatecoaching sessions with Mo Field andpicked up on the following “Mo‐isms”:Mandolin, Down the Pipe (for vowels),Guppy Mouth, Cone of Shame, FluffyKitty and Psycho Cat. Remember those,Shoreline? And then, we wereoverjoyed to be coached by none otherthan Dale Syverson in October, whotook us gliding on bridges with steppingstones, a glorious experience and greatanalogy. Hopefully, we will again share

Dale in early 2012. Another outstandingcoaching experience was ours withtalented and multiple crowned KimHulbert Vaughn in late November. International competition results inHouston left us so extremely proud ofour Region 2 contestants. The HarmonyClassic awarded second place toFenton Lakes (Small Chorus) and thirdplace to London (Mid‐Size Chorus);while amazing Spirit of Detroit (LargeChorus) captured 14th place, knockingthe socks off some of the mostrespected competitors. Melodeers mayhave commanded first place, butoutstanding Ronnige Show Choruswere close on their heels with a stellarpackage. Martini were the clearwinners of the quartet contest, yet we,of Region 2, are so proud of ourOverture’s performance. For the first time ever, Shoreline wasable to participate at Noel Night, whichencompasses Christmas celebratingdown at the Art Institute, ScienceCenter and Historical Museum. Thecrowds this year were in excess of7,000 people, and we were able to singon the cobblestone streets of “OldDetroit” in the Historical Museum. Whata fantastic, exuberant audience we had!We also sang at memorialremembrance ceremonies at CadillacMemorial and Oakview Cemeteries in

December and then went on to thefabulous Fox Theatre the same eveningand sang on the gorgeous lobbystaircase, opening for MannheimSteamroller's Christmas Show …spectacular! We hear rumors they wantus back again in 2012. A small Shoreline ensemble gave anafternoon performance for the MacombSenior Services in December, and thenwe all gathered together at LakelandManor that evening for our muchanticipated chorus party. It was, as italways is at Lakeland, a delicious dinnerand fun‐filled time for everyone. We wrapped up our Christmasperformances with a three‐hourcaroling session at Greenfield Village.Though is was misty, damp and foggy(where is the snow?), we sang on andon to Village visitors and enjoyedourselves immensely. After a major health scare for MaCatellane at Christmas, we were all sohappy to hear she was on the road torecovery. The New Year brings the NewBeginnings Novice Quartet Contest andFour Star Harmony Quartet Contest forYWIH in Port Huron January 20‐21.Also this gets us thinking and preparingfor regional competition in April. Wewish all a bright, successful, safe andHEALTHY 2012 … keep vocalizing!

Song of the Lakes Chorus has hadgreat fun putting on a murdermystery dinner, coaching, holiday

performances and a chorus holidayparty.

In November we shared dinner withour friends and families while thegossip flew around the room aboutElly Missy and her friends. Apparently, as guests learned fromvaries conversations, not all of Elly'sfriends were best buds. Duringdessert, someone poisoned DangerJackson's drink causing, according tothe coroner who just happened to beat the party, her to be D.R.T. (deadright there). The frantic search for theculprit caused much laughter andcomment. (Note to all Sweet Adelines‐ Maria Christian tells a wicked fortuneand you really should see her crystalball!)

We also had wonderful coachingsessions with Cindy Hansen, LeAnnHazlett and Linda Liddicoatt. We hopeeveryone is getting as excited aboutcompetition as we are! We finished the year with a greatparty held at our member JanHammond's gorgeous home. She had abeautifully decorated tree in everyroom. We ate, sang, laughed andgenerally “made merry” to end theyear with great fun.

As we start the new year, Song of theLakes Chorus wishes health, happinessand ringing chords to all our Region 2sisters.
