Lorna: That’s so interesting! Thank you for telling me. Do you know if more people are going to sign up?

Sharmila: Well, a number of people haven't told me yet. But, Natalia and Iwona are going to register for sure!

Lorna: Hey, I'll sign up, too!

Listen to Stephanie’s thoughts.I came to Manitoba 8 months ago. First I was so excited and happy, everybody was friendly and it was still warm. 8 months later I feel very exhausted. And I realize how bad my English is. Now that is the most important thing for me: I want to improve my English. But where to start?I hate it when people ask me 1 minute after I started to speak with them “Oh, I like your accent – where do you come from?”So I guess I have to work on my accent.Especially this a- sounds. I plan on practicing with English Central once a week! Another thing is writing emails. I feel so insecure, I always wish that there was somebody to proofread – but there is nobody. I guess I am going to use a checklist to make sure I am on the right track. And finally chatting with people I meet. I am so glad that now I begin to meet people, at school, when I bring kids to soccer practice or just at Safeway. But I still am not really sure how small talk works. Here people always seem so overly excited, everything is “fantastic”, “wonderful”, “awesome”. I wish I would talk the same way. They also use a lot of idioms – that is really difficult for me! I hope to be able to understand more of those idioms in the next couple of months!

1.Regrets

• We use wish + would + bare infinitive to express impatience, annoyance or dissatisfaction with a present action.

2. Wishes

• We use wish + simple past to express that we want a situation in the present (or future) to be different. • Want to

2. Obligation

• The modal should is used to express an obligation.• The modal have to replaces the modal must. We can use 'have (got) to ' in a more familiar language.

3. Future Plans

• I am going to• I plan on

Page 28: B-ALL_Week 2_Setting Goals

Regrets

I wish I would talk the same way.

We use wish + would + bare infinitive to express impatience, annoyance or dissatisfaction with a present action.

And what about you?

Page 29: B-ALL_Week 2_Setting Goals

Wish

We use wish + simple past to express that we want a situation in the present (or future) to be different.

I always wish that there was somebody to proofread.

And what about you?

Page 30: B-ALL_Week 2_Setting Goals

Obligation

The modal should indicates an obligation.

“ have to” replaces the modal must. We can use 'have (got) to ' in a more familiar language.

I should focus on idioms too. So I guess I have

to work on my accent.
