The ECHO is produced for the villagers of Badinghamby the Badingham Community Council

Registered Charity No. 274549

The Editor’s decision on whether or where to place material is final. Whileevery effort is made to check information published, the BCC does notendorse the accuracy or reliability of any article or advert within the magazine.

E.O.E.

Notes from the EditorDo you feel the urge to make notes whenever your spot wildlife? Forme, I think this stems from keeping a Nature Diary at primary school. Our first task of each school day at Dennington Primary, we werecompelled to find something interesting to write about for Mrs Williams. If it was interesting enough, we were asked to re-write it in a hard-backed book - a great privilege! When she was having a clear-out, MrsWilliams gave me the diary from 1983/84. The first entry is written byClare Bostock-Smith age 9 who had returned from the Summer holi-days with the news that there was a hornet’s nest next door. GrahamFoster age 8 had been counting crane flies. Carolyn Parmenterdescribed a spiders web, sparkling with dew. Mark Firth was studyingash trees while his brother Daniel had seen a pheasant in their garden. It took two weeks before I had anything interesting to write up in theNature Diary - I had seen a Daddy Long Legs on the Village Hall doorwhen I went to Youth Club. Meanwhile, Selwyn Moyse had seen a stoat- I bet he made that up!

If we have any budding nature diarists in the village, feel free to sendme your sightings. I would like to report that this week in Badingham Ihave seen a yellow hammer, two linnets and three red deer!

You’ll see from the Diary on the left that there’s lots going on in thevillage this Summer, so please give the organisers your support.

Best wishes, Tish

BADINGHAM

In April, Gerry met with an electrician and asbestos assessor at the VillageHall and fortunately no problems were found. Now we are waiting for aresponse to the reports filed with the Co-op and hoping an installationdate for our defibrillator is not too distant.

It was a warm, sunny morning when Rita, Sonja and Tish joined thechildren on their Easter Egg Hunt. Just four Badingham children werejoined by grandchildren of people from the village – lots of eggs to goround!

Rob Welham has done a marvelous job clearing and tidying the PocketPark; the BCC send their thanks for his hard work.

We’re looking forward for a fine afternoon for this year’s fete – rememberlast year’s wind and rain! We’re back at the White Horse – with thanks toLisa and Mark – and attractions will include a BBQ and Bar, BouncyCastle, Live Music and Carpet Bowls. The White Horse plan to extendentertainment into the evening with rock n roll music. We’ve asked theParish Council and Village Hall Committee to attend so they have achance to meet and exchange ideas with the people they represent.

Don’t forget to call me to book your free tickets for our get-together on13th July. We need to confirm numbers with the caterers by the secondweek of June - some very tasty and fancy foods are on the menu. Pleasebring your own drinks and seating. Call Pauline: 01728 602542.

The Village Hall Committee has asked for our support in moving plansforward for the refurbishment of the hall. A joint meeting is being heldon 16th June when we hope a plan of action can be formed.

Our next committee meeting is on 11th September, 7.30 in the VillageHall. We’d be very pleased to welcome you if you would like to join ourteam. Pauline Skevington, Chairman

BADINGHAMNEIGHBOURHOOD WATCHSonja Russell,Head Co-OrdinatorTel: 01728 638268

As many will have heard, there aremoves to merge the Suffolk and NorfolkEmergency Police Control Rooms into aCentre at Wymondham, Norfolk whichwill jeopardise front line policing.  I thinkthis is a short-sighted proposal.  NorfolkPolice would have no knowledge of outCounty, with all its nooks and cranniesand sometimes difficult to pronouncevillage names.  13 places names areduplicated in Suffolk and Norfolk, a realrecipe for confusion.

Why is it always Suffolk which loses out?We have lost both our local Fire ControlRoom and our Ambulance ControlRoom, now having to fight hard to keepour Police Control Room. Police ControlRoom Staff and Police Officers areagainst it - there should be other waysto reduce costs.

I have been campaigning against thisfor our village and beyond; voicing myopinions at Police Meetings.  We needYOUR SUPPORT to campaign to keepSuffolk’s front line.  Police CrimeCommissioner’s website www.suffolk-pcc.gov.uk or write to Tim Passmore atMartlesham Police Headquarters.

There is a Police Meeting at the MarketHall, Saxmundham, IP17 1AF on Mon21st July, 2014 at 6.30pm. I lookforward to seeing some of you there.

BURGLARIES - cash, including 100euros, was stolen from Dennington onMon 24th March, between 9.10am -1.40pm. A light coloured - possibly white- car was seen parked outside around12.30pm and 3 males in their mid 20s allof slim build, wearing grey hooded topswere seen in the area at that time.Officers believe this burglary may belinked to another in Badingham Road,Framlingham between 9am and3.20pm.  If you saw either the vehicle orthe young men, or have any information, please contact Suffolk Coastal CID bydialling 101 - quoting Ref No. LE/14/276.

BADINGHAM OIL THEFT Around1,000 litres of domestic heating oil wasstolen from a tank at a home in MillRoad, between 10pm Wednesday 12thand 8am on Thursday 13th March.Police are asking you to report anysuspicious behaviour to PC Tim Greendialling 101 quote Ref LE/14/245.

THE JOHNSTONE TWINS & MRS DORIS ZINKEISEN

Reading the Feb-March Echo brought back happy memories of the "The Artists",thank you Karen for the write up. The Johnstone Twins always supported thevillage in many ways, we were grateful for their support and enjoyed having themin our midst and were much loved by everyone.

Many of our Badingham residents will remember how the village celebrated theQueen’s Silver Jubilee on the 26th July 1978, at the Old Rectory Park (by kindpermission of General and the Hon. Mrs Miller). This was a great celebration. Wehad a large marquee, hired for the entertainment with a hard floor fordancing. Back then we all joined in - bingo for the senior citizens, games for thechildren including best decorated bicycle. A wonderfully yummy hog roast (fullsize pig) was cooked on a spit with people taking turns on the cooking. Roastturkey and chicken were also served; all supplied and cooked by the villagers.

During the afternoon a big cake made by Janet and Anne (the Johnstone Twins)was served. It was beautifully cooked and iced with the Union Flag... I can see itnow! The day ended with a beacon lit in the park and fireworks.

Now to their Mother, a very quiet and unassuming lady who too was a great artistand exhibited her paintings all over the place. You may not know that Dorisillustrated the first "Medical Books" for Students - my brother-in-law, Dr JohnPowley told me he still has one, which he treasures.

One can go on about this remarkable family and how lucky we were to have hadthem in of our midst of our big happy family of Badingham. (For information theyare buried in Badingham Churchyard)
