POSTGRADUATE TRAINING

JORDAN UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL (JUH) This is a major teaching hospital with a 500 bed capacity. It contains an

Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in

addition to Burns and Renal Units. It is also a major Oncology Center. JUH

is a major tertiary referral centre within Jordan. All major branches of

medicine and surgery are supported and include a busy Accident and

Emergency Department.

House Officer 1983-1984

In Jordan, this consists of a one-year rotation through medicine, surgery,

pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology and accident & emergency. This is a busy

teaching hospital with a wide spectrum of disease and excellent facilities.

Senior House Officer in Surgery 1984-1985

I was appointed to this post in 1984 and rotated through general surgery,

orthopedics, urology, neurosurgery and accident & emergency. In addition to

assisting in general surgery and trauma surgery, I gained experience in

insertion of peripheral and central venous lines and minor surgical procedure.

The Radiology Department at (JUH)

This consists of 4 general and 2 fluoroscopy rooms. There is an additional

biplane fluoroscopy unit. The department contains 2 spirals CT scanner, a

digital angiography suite and 2 coloured Doppler ultrasound machines, in

addition to 2 mammography machines and 1.5 Tesla MRI with all soft wares

including functional images. A Nuclear Medicine Department is adjacent.

1. Radiology Training 1985-1987

I was appointed as a Registrar in Radiology in the above department. There I

learned to perform routine barium studies, IVU examinations and

miscellaneous screening procedures such as venography, HSG, micturation

cystograms and urethrograms. I was also trained in accident & emergency and

plain film reporting.

2. Senior Registrar 1987-1989

I was appointed to this post in 1987 where I continued my radiology training.

As a Senior Registrar, I was able to learn and perform unaided conventional

and digital angiography, ultrasound arthrography and CT scanning. I also

performed some limited interventional procedures including percutaneous

cholangiograms in addition to in- and out-patient plain film reporting. I was

involved in teaching radiological techniques and principles to Medical

Students and Junior Registrars within the department. I also conducted

interdepartmental clinical radiological meetings.

An annual examination was undertaken and passed at each

attempt.

Promotion was related to each successful examination pass.

3. Radiology Lecturer 1989-1992

I was appointed to this post in 1989 as a Lecturer in Radiology at the

University of Jordan and as a Specialist in the Radiology Department which is

considered equivalent to a Consultant post in the United Kingdom.

RADIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

GLASGOW WESTERN INFIRMARY (Scotland-UK)

I took up the position of Registrar in Radiology in the Department in October

1992 in order to prepare myself for the FRCR Examination. During this time,

I received further training and experience in plain film reporting, barium

studies, intravenous urography and miscellaneous screening procedures. I had

also undertaken supervised angiography, CT scanning and ultrasound. I

passed the Part 1 FRCR examination.

I had been involved in creating a Part 1 FRCR teaching file and added

extensively to the departmental collection. I had been involved in teaching

other Registrars within the department.

I passed part II (A & B) FRCR in 1995, and took up the position of senior

Registrar and I was involved in teaching medical students as well as other

Registrars in the department. I also conducted medical meetings with different

departments. I performed all procedures without direct supervision specially

vascular and interventional, and I supervised the Registrars in their daily work.

I was involved in expanding the part II FRCR teaching file and also conducted

city-wide activities; specially film viewing and Tutorials for part I and part II

candidates.
