CONTRIBUTED PHOTO New state historical marker dedicated in Edinboro Officials from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Edinboro Area Historical Society, and Hurry Hill Maple Farm Museum Association recently dedicated an official Pennsylvania Historical Marker honoring Edinboro author Virginia Sorenson and the region’s maple industry at the Edinboro Branch Library. Sorenson’s book, “Miracles on Maple Hill,” won a Newbery Medal Award for children’s literature in 1957. More than 180 people attended the ceremony, at which Janet Woods, from the Hurry Hill Maple Farm, introduced a panel of speakers who talked about Virginia Sorensen’s work, her love of Edinboro, and her experiences in the community in the mid-1950s. Guida, a 1976 graduate of Mercyhurst College, received the distinguished alumni award for her outstanding service to the community by founding the StringsforaCure Foundation, which provides financial assistance directly to breast cancer patients in the form of gift cards, medical grants, comfort baskets and educational books on health, wellness and cancer prevention.
