Welcome Croeso
1
What a pleasure for me to be back in this beautiful part of the world and to bring with me some of the finest musicians I know. They are always entranced by the beauty of the town and surrounding hills and valleys, the superb acoustics of The Tabernacle, and above all your uniquely warm welcome.
This year as ever the first three days are rich in traditional Welsh music-making, including a Cymanfa Ganu, the Arpando Harp Duo, the Three Welsh Tenors and Côr Godre’r Aran.
Other highlights early in the week include the Children's Concert, free for all to attend, presented this year by the dazzling Erlkings from Vienna, and the famous duo of John Etheridge and Chris Garrick for the Jazz Night.
On Thursday the Bulgarian pianist Plamena Mangova plays us a wonderfully varied programme from Beethoven to Latin American dance, and the celebrated Bennewitz Quartet from Prague present Czech masterpieces.
Friday’s highlights include a masterclass for young cellists with the charismatic German cellist Nicolas Altstaedt, a programme about the life and loves of Claude Debussy with the pianist Lucy Parham and actor Tim McInnerny (of Blackadder and Notting Hill fame), and a late night candle lit concert of music by the great JS Bach.
On Saturday the superb pianist Alexander Lonquich plays Schubert’s sublime last piano sonata and later he combines forces with Nicolas Altstaedt and Barnabas Keleman for an evening of classic piano trios by Schubert, Brahms and Beethoven. The late night concert is a Spanish programme for guitar given by the brilliant young Turkish guitarist Emre Gokalp.
One of the greatest British singers, Sir John Tomlinson joins me on Sunday for a performance of Schubert’s Winterreise and later in the afternoon he is interviewed by Christopher Cook about his life in music.
The Festival Finale is a chamber music classic: string sextets by Brahms and Strauss with members of the Sacconi and Endellion String Quartets.
There are pre concert talks, interviews, lectures and photographic exhibitions by leading photographers Jeremy Moore and Sim Canetty-Clarke. So do join us – I promise you it will be a Festival to remember!

A unique feature of Welsh culture, the Cymanfa Ganu (Congregational Singing) is a festival of sacred hymns, sung with four part harmony by the audience, under the direction of a choral conductor.
The Machynlleth Festival continues the tradition by opening with its own Cymanfa Ganu.
Yn nodwedd unigryw o ddiwylliant Cymru, gŵyl emynau sanctaidd yw’r Gymanfa Ganu a genir mewn harmoni pedwar llais gan y gynulleidfa o dan arweinydd corawl.
Mae Gŵyl Machynlleth yn parhau’r traddodiad drwy agor â’i Chymanfa Ganu’i hun.

1pm / £6
John Etheridge and Chris Garrick have been associated for many years -starting with the Sweet Chorus project and concurrently in duo.
The duo provides a feast of interplay, improvisation and eclectic repertoire. Both players make extensive use of looping and other effects-creating exotic tapestries of sound, almost orchestral at times, yet can seamlessly switch to the most acoustic sound.
In his illustrated talk Jeremy will tell us how his Festival Exhibition Bird/Land has given him the opportunity to combine his first love of birds with his long established career as a Welsh landscape photographer.
Jeremy's Bird/Land exhibition will be on show in the Ruralist Room and Foyer galleries between 27 June and 19 September.
Mae John Etheridge a Chris Garrick yn gysylltiedig ers blynyddoedd lawer – gan ddechrau gyda’r prosiect Sweet Chorus ac fel deuawd ar hyn o bryd.
Mae’r ddeuawd yn darparu gwledd o gyd-chwarae cyffrous a byrfyfyr a rhaglen eclectig. Mae’r ddau yn gwneud defnydd helaeth o ddolenni sydd wedi’u recordio ac effeithiau eraill - gan greu tapestrïau sain egsotig, bron â bod yn gerddorfaol ar brydiau, ond eto gallant newid yn ddiwnïad i’r sŵn mwya acwstig.
Yn ei sgwrs â darluniau, bydd Jeremy yn sôn wrthon ni am sut mae ei arddangosfa yn yr Ŵyl, Aderyn/Tir, wedi rhoi’r cyfle iddo gyfuno ei gariad cyntaf at adar â’i yrfa hirsefydledig fel ffotograffydd o dirwedd Cymru.
Bydd arddangosfa Aderyn/Tir i’w gweld yn orielau Ystafell y Gwladwyr a’r Cyntedd rhwng 27 Mehefin a 19 Medi.

The life and loves of Claude Debussy.
The narrative of Rêverie, which takes the form of a personal journal, follows Debussy from his initial success with the Prix de Rome in 1885 to his untimely death in 1918. It is punctuated with solo piano works ranging from the ever-popular lyricism of Clair de Lune, Rêverie and The Girl with the Flaxen Hair to such virtuosic showpieces as Jardins sous la pluie, the Etudes and L’isle joyeuse.
Bywyd a chariadon Claude Debussy.

Thursday 27 / 6:30pm FREELeoš Janáček – An Indian Summer and a Late RomanceIn his last years Janáček seems to have fallen in love with a much younger married woman, Kamila Stösslová. The result was a remarkable outpouring of new music, including tonight’s string quartet Intimate Letters written in 1928. Was it deep romantic feelings within the composer that inspired these late works, or was Stösslová simply a necessary creative accessory?

Festival Exhibition - The TannerySim Canetty-Clarke
Few contemporary photographers have made such sympathetic portraits of musicians at work than Sim Canetty-Clarke. A musician herself, Canetty-Clarke has an unerring instinct of where to be during a performance to coax players into revealing themselves as musicians. These are images that celebrate the relationship between players and their instruments. Indeed in Canetty-Clarke's work the instrument seems to be a natural extension of the human body. So this exhibition is more than a documentary record of the 2014 Machynlleth Music Festival. In a very real sense the images constitute a performance in their own right.
Ychydig ffotograffwyr cyfoes sydd wedi gwneud portreadau mor gydymdeimladol o gerddorion wrth eu gwaith â Sim Canetty-Clarke. Yn gerddores ei hun, mae gan Canetty-Clarke reddf ddi-ffael o ran lle i fod yn ystod perfformiad i gymell chwaraewyr i’w datgelu eu hunain fel cerddorion. Delweddau yw’r rhain sy’n dathlu’r berthynas rhwng offerynwyr a’u hofferynnau. Yn wir, yng ngwaith Canetty-Clarke, mae’r offeryn i’w weld fel estyniad naturiol o’r corff dynol. Felly, mae’r arddangosfa hon yn fwy na chofnod dogfen o Ŵyl Gerdd Machynlleth 2014. A dweud y gwir, perfformiad ynddynt eu hunain yw’r delweddau hyn.
