Vara United Migration AWS Cloud DR on AWS Cloud Success Story BCDR ABOUT THE CUSTOMER Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited ("Srei"), a Kanoria Foundation entity, is one of India's largest holistic infrastructure institutions, constantly and consistently delivering innovative solutions in the infrastructure space. Srei, derived from the Hindi word ‘Shrey’ meaning 'merit' or 'credit'. The company has been in the business for nearly three decades and has come a long way after starting its journey perhaps in one of the most difficult and challenging times. In 1989, India had not opened up its economy, which during those times, was in doldrums. There was hardly any quality investment in infrastructure projects. Srei was born then, a child of a dream, with the aim to address two of the most critical problems in our country then – financing and infrastructure. Today, Srei has close to USD 5.5 billion of consolidated assets under its management. SREI had hosted their most of their mission-critical applications which require high system up-time and resiliency with a leading Data-center service provider. DC was located in New Delhi, without having a DR was single point of failure in the event of any outages, frequent outages in the recent past, even took over a week to resume the application availability inevitably resulted in huge business impact at the customer's end. Problem sets defined were: a. High Capital Investment in procuring infrastructure. b. Outages resulting in both loss of business and brand value. c. Difficulty in scaling the infrastructure. d. Operation cost on 3rd party service provider on DC support for maintenance. e. No cost-effective solution for setting up the DR which was mandated by RBI. f. The lengthy process of discussions and negotiations during a hardware refresh. g. Slow and deteriorating hardware stack hampering performance. SREI has migrated 25 Applications including 4 business critical applications built on Dot NET v4.x, using database as Oracle 11G R2 & few custom applications which runs on Dot Net v4.x and back-end DB as Oracle & MSSQL on AWS embracing best practices with guidelines for implementation. Housing 65+ windows based instances ,40+ Production instances & 25 Development & Test environment. Minfy’ s Enterprise Cloud Architects worked with the Infrastructure team of SREI Core IT Infrastructure team to design a highly scale-able & fault tolerant Disaster Recovery on AWS paying special attention to maximizing the availability and ensuring business continuity for all the core applications. Minfy devices out the plan to migrate 25+Microsoft based Dot Net Applications which includes 4 - Business critical most applications & 20+ internal applications on AWS by leveraging the Advantages of different AWS services. Starting with DR environment and then production. Minfy reduced capital and operational costs by recommending an alternative for the on-premise infrastructure for the DR site , instead of that adopting the new scale- able infrastructure on AWS. Minfy started the migration of production server for SREI with a complete due-diligence of their existing infrastructure along with the special focus on economics /TCO, migration plan has been detailed with ownership and recommendations . PROPOSED SOLUTION RUNNING WINDOWS WORKLOADS ON AWS HIGH LEVEL DESIGN OF MIGRATION MIGRATION PROCESS Minfy's Implementation team along with the Cloud architects worked with Infrastructure team & business stakeholders of SREI to derive out the migration plan to ensure on zero / very minimal interruption to the website’s availability. To finalize the Migration plan, it’s started with BIA Analysis, risk assessment, Cost Analysis, Priorities established with inputs from SREI, prioritization done for functional operations, information flow, processing systems used, services provided inputs gathered as most practical alternatives possible in case of DR. 1. Applications were moved both in a manual and automated fashion. While simpler homegrown web applications were migrated manually complex ERP and Legacy Finance applications were moved using CloudEndure. 2. For block-level synchronization of databases to CloudEndure was leveraged. 3. File system integration achieved leveraging Minfy’s Intellectual proprietary application CloudStorz. As per the use case, S3 bucket needs to be mapped as the drive for the core application for which a 3rd party application TNT Drive was used. 4. Migrated on-premise P1 legacy applications servers hosted on windows platform to AWS via AWS VM Import/Export service as they have multiple challenges in setting up the same on a new windows ec2 instance on AWS. 5. The additional domain controller has been set up on AWS environment from scratch along with client by syncing the same with on-premise Primary Domain Controller to perform successful DR drill on AWS environment as client's most applications were AD driven. being additional domain controller already configured it helped for successful application usage on DR site. 6. Session management & load balancing achieved using the AWS Elastic load balancer for multiple windows terminal servers for which houses P1 application stack. 7.For smooth DR transition of dynamic .Net Application's content,for data transfer from on-premise DC to DR site we have used our native tool CloudStroz which works on upload mode in DC site and in download mode in DR site having S3 as the repository. So in the DR site when the application instances were up having this back-end mechanism it had all the updated data in place and ready to use. RESULTS The value proposition shown by Minfy & AWS, convinced the client to make the DR which was set up on AWS as primary datacenter & the third party DC provider as DR. The total cost of operations of the DR was optimized at 15% of primary DC TCO. Minfy’s DR Solution was audited & approved by Gartner without any observations and changes helped in setting the stage for BFSI & NBFC customers to start cloud adoption. DR Drill was immensely successful with zero data loss. All the P1 application servers started within the stipulated RTO of two hours. Minfy as an Omni channel solution for SREI from the design of the solution, implementation to managed services support (24*7) helped SREI to focus more on their core business. External auditors from Reserve Bank Of India audited & approved the DR set up as it complied to all the regulations governed. DR on Cloud strategy was presented by SREI in the Gartner symposium and was highly acknowledged by the industry and opened doors to a lot of BFSI & NBFC customers to start cloud adoption for DR with minimal investments.
