Dear Canyon Students and Families: Welcome back to school, Condors! I hope you have been enjoying summer and I’m excited to welcome you to the new school year. I am looking forward to returning to Canyon after serving as the Interim Principal at Jensen Ranch Elementary this spring. With fourteen years of middle school experience, I am thrilled to be back at Canyon and look forward to partnering with you for a successful year ahead. For our incoming 6th grade families, welcome to middle school! We know this is a big transition and on behalf of all the Canyon staff, we look forward to working together with you and welcome you to our Canyon community. To our 7th grade families, we look forward to seeing our 7th graders continue to SOAR and rise to meet the challenges ahead. Principal Message – Summer 2018 continued:

Remember to check the Canyon website at www.cv.k12.ca.us/canyon for information on upcoming events. By clicking on the “Daily Announcements” you will be directed to the Daily Bulletins with information on student events, activities, important dates and more. The “Communique” under the “Students/Parents” tab is our monthly newsletter that highlights important information for the coming month. I frequently email home information about Canyon as well. You can also follow us on Twitter @CanyonCondors to get a sense of what’s happening around campus. The Aeries Parent Portal is your link to your child’s academic progress, attendance, and all of their classes and teachers! In addition, your student will also have access to Aeries to monitor their progress. They will also have a Google Account and many of our teachers utilize Google Classroom to support student learning. Please use these valuable tools to stay connected to what is happening in middle school. When in doubt, please contact your student’s teachers or counselor. Incoming 6th graders – join us for WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) Orientation. We are very excited to offer this opportunity for our newest Condors to get them acquainted with Canyon and connect them with peers and staff! Please find the enclosed flyer with more details but please save the date for August 16 from 8am-12pm. This is a very important event for all of our 6th graders! Middle school is an amazing time for growth, and it can be a challenging time in the lives of students and families - we are here to support you and work together as a team for a successful year. Estimados Estudiantes y Familias de Canyon: Bienvenidos de regreso a clases, Condors! Espero hayan disfrutado de su verano y me emociona el darles la mas cordial bienvenida en este nuevo año escolar. Estoy esperando con ansias regresar a Canyon, despues de servir como Directora Interina, en la Escuela Primaria Jensen Ranch esta primavera. Con experiencia de catorce años en la escuela secundaria, estoy encantada de regresar a Canyon y espero asociarme con ustedes, para un año exitoso por venir. Para las familias de 6to. Grado que ingresan, bienvenidas a la escuela secundaria! Sabemos que este es un gran cambio y de parte de todo el personal de Canyon, esperamos trabajar junto con ustedes y bienvenidos a nuestra comunidad Canyon. A nuestras familias de 7mo. Grado, esperamos continuar ver VOLAR MUY ALTO a nuestros alumnos de 7mo. Grado y tambien elevarse, para encontrarse con nuevos retos. A nuestros familias de 8vo. Nuestro comite de Padres de familia (PTA), Padres Unidos y nuestra Red de Alianza Afroamericana, son fantasticas oportunidades para que se conecten con otras familias. Favor de buscar el folleto adjunto con mas informacion y guarden la fecha que es el 16 de Agosto de 8:00 am- 12:00pm. Este es un evento muy importante para todos nuestros alumnos de 6to. Grado.! La escuela secundaria, es una etapa muy importante para el crecimiento y puede ser una etapa desafiante en la vida de los estudiantes y familias – estamos aqui para apoyarles y juntos como un equipo, trabajar para un año exitoso. As part of our fundraiser, we are excited to continue the Tuition Rewards program! Exclusively through Great American Fundraising, your son/daughter can earn up to 2500 Tuition Rewards Points accepted at over 370 private universities across the country! VISITORS ON CAMPUS: ALL visitors to the school campus MUST check in and sign in at the school office between

the hours of 7:30 am and 3:30 pm. ALL visitors are escorted on the school campus between the hours of 7:30 and 3:30 pm. ALL visitors must wear a Canyon visitor badge or District ID card. No track use during school day for safety and instruction. Prior arrangements MUST be made when visiting the classroom. This includes before and after school visitors on the campus. If you are volunteering in the Library / classroom or chaperoning on a field trip / school dance, you must have completed the Megan’s Law form that was included in your child’s registration packet. This form must be completed at the start of each school year and is good through September 30th of the following school year. Additional forms are available in the main office.

Important information for the 2018-2019 school year…

Listed below are the terms you will be hearing and reading about as we approach the start of a new school year. Families will need to complete the online re-registration process before coming

to (walk-through) registration. This will take place online, through your Parent Portal account. Pre-Enrollment (AIR): First time students to the Castro Valley Unified School District will start by completing the AIR (AERIES Internet Registration) process online. You will be required to have certain documents handy before starting and will provide proof of those documents to the school site to complete enrollment. Enrollment: Enrolling a new student requires that you have completed the AIR process (described above) and come to Canyon Middle School to show the Confirmation page from AIR, Proof of Residency, provide various require documents. Contact the school at 538-8833 to set up an appointment to enroll new students after completing the AIR process. (Enrollment is by appointment only.) Re-registration: (Parent Portal account required) This YEARLY process takes place in August and is required prior to walk-through registration. Parents/guardians will review all forms relevant to your child, your child’s school Student Handbook, State and Federal laws, etc. You will review all of the information you have provided to the school (including emergency contacts) and update any changes. You MUST print the Signature page to bring to walk-through registration. Walk-through Registration: The process of returning the completed information provided for Pre-registration. This is a walk-through process at the school site. All required/mandatory forms (including the Signature page) must be signed and completed. Upon completion, the student will receive their school schedule. Anyone can walk the paperwork through the event, just please make sure everything has been completed/signed.

7th/8th Grades (Last names A-L) - Wednesday, August 15th - 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM 7th/8th Grades (Last names M-Z) - Wednesday, August 15th - 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM 6th Grade (Last names A-L) - Thursday, August 16th - 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM 6th Grade (Last names M-Z) - Thursday, August 16th - 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM Help will be available in room F-10 (near the cafeteria) for those needing assistance with the online Re-registration process, during the scheduled Walk-through Registration times. SCHEDULES WILL NOT be distributed to students for which the school has had “undeliverable/change of address” mail returned. If you move over the summer, PLEASE contact the school office at 538-8833 to

complete residency paperwork before Walk-through registration.

SCHEDULES WILL NOT be distributed to students without completed proof of residency. This includes Residency / Shared Residency which must be updated yearly.

SCHEDULES WILL NOT be distributed if your child has missing immunization requirements (including the 7th grade Tdap requirement).
