intRoduCtion to RF and WiReless teCHnoloGies
Bluetooth wireless technology is a short-range communications technology intended to replace the cables connecting portable and/or fixed devices while maintaining high levels of security. The key features of Bluetooth technology are robustness, low power and low cost. The Bluetooth specification defines a uniform structure for a wide range of devices to connect and communicate with each other.
Enables the use of alternative MAC and PHY for transporting Bluetooth profiledata. The Bluetooth Radio is still used for device discovery, initial connection andprofile configuration, however when large quantities of data need to be sent,the high-speed alternative MAC PHY (802.11, typically associated with WiFi) willbe used to transport the data. This means that the proven low-power connectionmodels of Bluetooth are used when the system is idle, and the low-power per bitradios are used when large quantities of data need to be sent.
Bluetoth Low Energy is a new protocol designed to transfer simple data sets between compact devices. It takes less time to make a connection than conventional Bluetooth and consumes approximately 98% less power than Bluetooth basic rate. This technology opens up new applications especially in the areas of health and fitness, energy management, consumer and automotive.
A cellular network is a radio network distributed over land areas called cells, each served by at least one fixed-location transceiver known as a cell site or base station. When joined together these cells provide radio coverage over a wide geographic area. This enables a large number of portable transceivers (e.g. mobile phones, vehicles, etc.) to communicate with each other and with fixed transceivers and telephones anywhere in the network, via base stations, even if some of the transceivers are moving through more than one cell during transmission. Many protocols use a cellular network. At Avnet Memec we support: GSM/GPRS, EDGE, 1 x RTT, EVDO, HSPA and LTE.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of defence. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS. GPS technology forms the heart of many processes needing a position or timing. Applications can then take this information to provide navigation or location awareness in portable products.
