About AvGen
We are a small family
owned and operated
business that successfully
imported rare breeds
of chickens from the
United Kingdom (UK)
into Australia in 2014 and
2015. The AvGen imports
were the first successful
importations of pure bred
chicken breeds since
the early 1950s. We are
undertaking our final and
largest importation of
rare chicken breeds and
colour varieties in 2016.
Possibly the largest rare
breed preservation
project of its kind, in the
world. We are excited
to help make Australian
poultry fancier’s dreams
a reality. We hope these
breeds are embraced by
both the enthusiast and
conservationist alike.

of origin and we now
have the responsibility
to ensure that their
future is secured.

Our Breeds
Our breeding stock was sourced from some of the
best breeders in the UK, and we are incredibly grateful
they supported this endeavour. A number of the breeds
imported in 2014 and 2015 were from the stock originally sourced for
ARPIS. Almost all of the breeds in our 2016 importation are from entirely
new stock sourced from UK breeders in 2015. We have over 27 colour
varieties in 19 imported breeds available and more planned in 2016.
We also supply a top laying strain
of white leghorns, quality large
fowl Australorp and some other
non-imported poultry breeds.

The Importations
Our importations were the
successful culmination
of a ‘rescue mission’ to
salvage what remained of
the very unfortunate failed
importation attempt of
the Australian Rare Poultry
Importation Syndicate
(ARPIS). After hearing
about the syndicate’s
decision to discontinue
with the project and
the subsequent rapid
dispersal of the source
flocks in the UK breeding
facility; Jan Sparks and
Lyn Campbell were able
to halt the flock dispersal
and closure of the facility
before it was complete.
Just a few breeds remained
in the UK breeding facility
and we set about funding
the facility and staff to
continue operations, and
began sourcing more
breeds and varieties
for future imports. This
project wouldn’t have
been possible without
the valuable efforts of
the UK team; Dr David
Spackman, Mr Rob Gauld
and Mr Stuart Wilson.
In partnership with Jan
and Geoff Sparks we have
continued to facilitate the
running of the UK breeding
facility and are undertaking
one last importation of
purebred chicken breeds
and varieties in 2016.
