HAVE ACELEBRITYQUESTION?

QAre Body of Proofwith DanaDelany and Harry’s Lawwith

Kathy Bates going to come back?

Dottie Palmquist, Sun City, Ariz.

Harry’s Law is definitely can-

celed, but Body of Proof just

came back this past week for

its third season. Nicholas

Bishop’s character, Peter

Dunlop, was killed off,

but Delany returns as

medical examiner

Megan Hunt. The

ABC drama add-

ed two cast mem-

bers: Mark Valley

(Fringe, Human

Target), who

plays a detec-

tive with ties

to Megan’s

past, and Elyes

Gabel (Game of

Thrones), who is enlisted

as his rookie partner.

QWhatever happened to The Jeff ProbstShow? Sharon Sathern, Grayslake, Ill.

His show is still airing in syndication, although

that’s just one project on his busy schedule.

Probst, 51, who is in his 26th season hosting the

CBS reality show Survivor, added author to his

résumé with his recent kids’ adventure book,

Stranded. It’s “an updated Robinson Crusoe

without the parents,” says Probst, who already is

working on the second book. After so many

years of traveling the world — and watch-

ing other people eat bugs— for Survivor,

he’s not ready to quit yet. “I think it’s the

perfect storm for me. I love human

nature. I like people, and I love watch-

ing what conflict does to us and how

we justify our behavior.”

QWho is thestunning

woman in theDewar's Scotchwhiskycommercials?

Ken SayreBloomville, Ohio

Though you might

not know it from

her American roles

in movies such as Mallrats and

The Rock — or the Scottish

accent she sports while sipping

whisky in TV ads — Claire

Forlani, 40, actually is British.

The London native, most recently

seen on NCIS: Los Angeles,

talks with an off-screen

lover named Angus in

the Dewar’s ads, but

her real-life beloved

is actor husband

Dougray Scott.

At least she has

someone at

home who

can help with

her brogue —

Scott himself

hails from

Scotland.

Lempert says. “Andpeople want to mix it upwhen it comes to whatthey’re eating.” Here’swhat he sees:

Protein options. Asmeat costs rise, peopleseek affordable protein.Result: more nut-based

snacks such as almondsflavored with dark

chocolate or wasa-bi, and more peo-

ple eating sunflow-er seeds. Roastedchickpeas, too.

Better portioncontrol. When 100-calorie packaged items

were introduced, peoplecomplained about smallportions. The solution: newflavor choices. An Oreo orFig Newton 100-caloriepackage doesn’t containmuch volume. “But if theyare dipped in chocolate, when we have a flavor that

makes our mouth go ‘wow,’we’re accepting of thesmaller portions.”

Smarter nuking. Newmicrowave steaming traysand other packaging inno-vations make it easier tocreate well-heated foodquickly. Result: “Smaller[package] sizes, so you cancreate your own smorgas-bord on the dinner table.”

Snack breakfast. Pic-ture a one-egg mini-omelet. “We have seen thehappy-hour phenomenonat lunch and dinner. I thinkwe’ll see it at breakfast.” 6

The first movie I ever saw was aWestern called Frontier Wom-an. The reason I saw it was mydad played the villain in it, mymom played a little part in it,and, the fact is, I was even in it.

It was my first gig, at 18 months. They needed a crying baby, so they rolled

the camera, gave me a little toy truck to playwith and then took it away from me. That mademe cry, and they got the shot they wanted.

Later, I remember going to the drive-in tosee the film. I watched my dad get shot and fallforward over the bannister, the way villains inWesterns always did.

I understood it was pretend, but it waspretend trying to create something that feltreal. My dad hadn’t really been shot becausehe was watching the movie with me. It was allfun and games, and it still is.

At age 4, I saw my first major movie,Around the World in 80 Days. It was absolute-

ly transporting. I remem-ber it vividly to this day.

That’s when I began to fall in love with themoviegoing experience.

Fifty-four years later, I still love movies. It’s my wife Cheryl’s and my primary hobbyand outing. It’s what we do on a date: We goout to the movies. I appreciate the theaterenvironment. Although audience memberssometimes make the experience uncomfort-able, I’d rather take that chance.

There’s something unique and meaningful

in a group experience. You’re sitting in a largeaudience, and there’s a moment when every-one cheers or everyone laughs or everyonecries. You’re all emotionally in sync.

When a movie transports me in an emotion-al way, it inspires my imagination or myintellect. I love to lose myself in the charactersor the world the director is creating. It’s rareand wonderful. I’m a good audience.

As a member of the Academy of MotionPicture Arts and Sciences, I’m not supposedto talk about my current favorites, but I willsay 2012 was a very good year. A decade fromnow, people will be comparing movies withArgo, Lincoln, Life of Pi, Django Unchained,Silver Linings Playbook and Les Misérables.

Even though the economics of the filmbusiness have become so challenging, therewas some extraordinary work last year. Exec-utives, producers, writers — everybody —they’re all redoubling their efforts so thatthese films really soar. There’s lots of pres-sure, but the good news is that the movies I’vementioned, along with others like The Impos-sible, Skyfall, Zero Dark Thirty, Amour,Moonrise Kingdom and Beasts of the South-ern Wild are not safe choices. They’re bold.

Filmmakers are trying to be ambitious andfresh, and they’re betting on the idea thataudiences want to see something that’s notlike everything else. They want movies to beengrossing, good and entertaining, not manu-

factured, regurgitated ideas.Americans didn’t invent film. But we made

it a medium for the masses, not for theelite or for academics. We moved itto populist entertainment.

Movies came at a time inAmerican culture when therewas a kind of restless, energeticambition, a desire to tackle theworld. That created anxiety, andpeople wanted escapism. Theywanted jolts, emotions, thrills, laughsand tears. Hollywood has always mademovies that audiences want to see, goingback to Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keatonthrough Frank Capra, Billy Wilder, Star

Wars and E.T., right up to today. Americanfilms are still a medium that aims to please; it’s

ingrained in the American psyche. Andpopulist doesn’t mean it can’t be

artful, powerful and significant. What really means the most to

me are the themes and ideas. Ichoose the films I make becausethe ideas can entertain and give

the audience something to ponder.I’m working on a half-dozen projects

and I love them all.Where will I be on Oscar night? Probably at

home having pizza, popcorn and takeout food.I’ll put my feet up and hang out with some palswho like movies, too. 6

Y OU BRUSH TWICE aday and floss prettyregularly? Excel-

lent! Both are key to keep-ing your pearly whitesclean, strong and healthy.

But let’s do a checkup onfour bad habits that canundo all your good work:

Ducking the dentist. At least 20% of Americanshave one or more untreat-ed cavities. Ignored, cav-ities can get larger, deeperand cause severe aches, in-fection or even tooth loss.Don’t wait for pain to seethe dentist; schedule reg-

ular checkups and cleanings once or twice a year. Andbe sure to tell your dentist about medicines you take:Dry mouth — a common cause of cavities in older adults— is a side effect in about 500 drugs, including those forallergies, asthma, blood pressure, cholesterol, pain andAlzheimer’s disease. To relieve dry-mouth symptoms, drink more water or chew sugar-free gum.

Drinking sugar. Bacteria in your mouth that feed onthe sugar in sodas and sweetened fruit drinks makeacids that attack tooth enamel for up to 20 minutes afteryou’re done drinking, says the American Dental Associ-ation. Repeated attacks weaken enamel, leading tocavities and sensitive teeth. Research also suggeststhat the high acidity of energy and sports drinks canerode enamel. The best tooth-friendly thirst-quencheris water — preferably with fluoride. This mineraloccurs naturally in all water sources, and researchshows it helps prevent cavities. Check bottled water

labels for fluoride; if you use afilter for tap water, get one thatdoesn’t remove fluoride.

Using old brushes. They’reless effective at cleaning; plus the

bristles may breed bacteria. Replace your brush everythree to four months, sooner if it’s frayed, and rightafter you’ve had a cold, flu, mouth infection or sorethroat. More tips: Choose a soft-bristled brush with asmall head to get at hard-to-reach spots; brush incircular motions with fluoride toothpaste.

Biting things open. You know you’ve done it —with a bag of chips, a piece of tape or even a price tag onnew clothes. Not a good idea: Your tooth could crack, which hurts; if the nerve in a cracked tooth getsdamaged or infected, you might need a root canal. 6

Advice from

Loose SaggyNeck Skin –CanAnyCreamCureTurkeyNeck?DEAR DORRIS: I’m a woman who is 64 yearsyoung who suffers from really loose skin undermy chin and on my lower neck. I hate the term, but my grandkids say I have “turkey neck” andfrankly, I’ve had enough of it!

I have tried some creams designed to help tighten and firm that loose, saggy skin, butthey did not work. Is there any cream out there that can truly help my loose neck skin?

Turkey Neck, Shreveport, LA

DEAR TURKEY-NECK: In fact, there is a very potent cream on the market thatfirms, tightens and regenerates new skin cells on the neck area. It is called theDermagist Neck Restoration Cream®. This cream contains an instant lift ingredientthat tightens the skin naturally, as well as deep moisturizing ingredients to firm the skinand make it more supple. Amazingly, the Dermagist Neck Restoration Cream® alsohas Stem Cells taken from Malus Domesticus, a special apple from Switzerland.

These stem cells are actually unprogrammed cells that can mimic those of young skinthat stays tight, firm and wrinkle free. As an alternative to the scary surgeries or facelifts that many people resort to, this cream really packs a big punch on the loose saggyskin of the neck.

The Dermagist Neck Restoration Cream® is available online at Dermagist.com oryou can order or learn more by calling toll-free, 888-771-5355. Oh, I almost forgot… Iwas given a promo code when I placed my order that gave me 11% off. The code was“REG5N15”. It’s worth a try to see if it still work.

DOING YOUR OWN taxesisn’t the same as doingyour own brain sur-

gery. But if you have anythingmore complicated than salaryand bank interest, you’re prob-ably better off with a profes-sional tax preparer.

If you just have the verybasics, then you can file form1040EZ, which has seven ques-tions. It’s simple enough thatTurboTax has an app that letsyou file taxes by phone — justsnap a picture of your W-2, an-swer a few questions, andyou’re done. You must haveearned less than $100,000 in2012 ($120,000 if you’re married)and have only W-2, interest orunemployment income.

But even the 1040EZ has pit-falls: If you have student loaninterest, for example, you can’tdeduct it using the simplestform. If you don’t report it, youwill pay too much in taxes. You’ll need to move up to 1040A,the next-easiest form.

If you have anything morecomplicated — itemized deduc-tions, self-employment income, rental properties — hand thejob off to a pro, says PeggyRuhlin, a financial planner inColumbus, Ohio. “The new taxlaw didn’t make anything easi-

For most people, the big tax-preparation firms are fine:They train their employees onnew tax rules, and can standbehind the return if the IRSquestions it. This may not betrue for mom-and-pop opera-

tions, saysRuhlin.

The draw-back withtax firms:It will costyou, eventhough the

fee is deductible. Storefrontpreparers have tiered pricingstructures; H&R Block’s feesrange from free for first-timefilers to $49.95. If you hire aCPA for a complex return —say, for a small business — thesky’s the limit.

Finally, if you are expectingmoney back, don’t take out arefund-anticipation loan unlessyou’re desperate for immediatecash: The associated fees willtake a big bite out of yourrefund. 6

For Oscars,a witty, fizzynew cocktail

Ask a Broadway dancer-turned-writer to come upwith an Oscars-worthy,

Les Misérables-themed cocktail, and be prepared to be wowed. His

Les Fizz has color(gold, of course) andsome sparkle (Cham-pagne). It’s a winner.

Tim Federle concocted LesFizz just for USA WEEKEND,but his 65 other literature-ifieddrinks in Tequila Mockingbirdare dripping with the same wit —think Vermouth the Bell Tolls andOrange Julius Caesar. “This is mybook for recovering Englishmajors,” says Federle. “Itook the es-sence of eachstory andturned it intoa cocktail.”

Lately I have noticed quite a fewnewspapers and magazines prais-ing a polish formulated by a home-maker. The articles report thatDonna Maas grew frustrated withrubbing and scrubbing her silver, brass and other metals only tosee them quickly becomedull and tarnished again. De-

termined to put an end to her constant battle with tar-nish Donna formulated a metal cleaner and it’stransforming the industry.Anita Gold, nationally syndicated columnist andexpert on the restoration of antiques calls MAAS(named after its inventor) “The best and most amaz-ing polish in the world.” Ms. Gold wrote in her col-umn, “A truly miraculous polish referred to as“miracle polish” that’ll turn the most disastrouspieces into the most de-brightful is MAAS Fine Pol-ishing Creme For All Metals, which cleans, restores, preserves and polishes to perfection any brass, cop-per, chrome, silver, stainless steel, aluminum, gold orany other metal with amazing results – no matter howbadly stained, spotted, discolored, flood-damaged,weathered, dirty, dingy, drab, or dull they may be.”Since I had an old brass lamp in desperate need ofrestoration, this journalist decided to put MAAS tothe test. The lamp had been stored in the garage andwas in far worse condition than I remembered. I was

flabbergasted as I watched the polishing cremewipe away layers and years of tarnish. Neverwipe away layers and years of tarnish. Neverhave I used anything so easy. WOW! The shine is unbelievable and although Iwash dishes every day, the shine keeps-on-shining.And it’s no longer covered with ugly water spots –water just rolls off the protective finish anddown the drain.

An independent consumer study of 28 metal polishesreports, “MAAS Polishing Creme has no equals in allaround polishing performance...” MAAS retained itsshine longer than every polish tested. Good Housekeep-ing Institute recommends MAAS for restoring heavilytarnished heirlooms stating,MAAScleans best and giveslasting results.”The Miami Herald says “Polishing product can renewold silver.” The Chicago Tribune headline sums it all upby proclaiming “One Amazing Polish Is The Best AtEverything.”Tests performed per Dept. of Defense specificationsapproved MAAS for use on jet aircraft. DouglasAircraft Co. certified the polish for aluminum, steel andacrylic based plastics. TheU.S.Air Force,Army, Navy,Marine and Coast Guard have ordered MAAS. The reporter in me had tofind out.During our interview Donna explained, “I enjoy thewarmth that beautifully polished metals add to a home. However, not the hours it took to keep them tarnish free. The harsh cleaners always left my hands dry and burn-ing – one instant silver dip smelled so bad I felt sick. When I read the label, I discovered it contained cancer-causing ingredients. That's when I became determined tofind a better way to care for the metals in my home.”And that she did. Her formula developed in conjunc-tionwith a chemist friend has a lavender scent, feelsmorelike a hand cream, quickly restores and leaves a deep, richone-of-a-kind luster beyond anything I’ve ever seen.“To my surprise,” Donna reveals, “the formula far

exceeded my original goal. MAAS restores glass fire-place doors, clouded crystal vases, fiberglass, linoleumand even plastic. The restorations were so remarkable everyone sug-gested that I sell my invention on television.”Donna sent samples of her polish to televised shoppingchannels and both QVC and The Home Shopping Net-work askedDonna to personally appear onTVto demon-strate her product. 17,000 viewers called duringMAAS’debut and encore performances quickly brought amilliondollars in record-breaking sales.dollars in record-breaking sales.Sheila Oetting in FloridaSheila Oetting in Floridawrote Donna saying, wrote Donna saying,“Thank you, for a“Thank you, for awonderful product!wonderful product!Family treasureswith 30Family treasureswith 30years of tarnish, grimeyears of tarnish, grimeand corrosion are gleam-and corrosion are gleam-ing.
