“We make a living

We make a life
by what we give.”

Thank you for supporting the Avera Race Against Breast Cancer. For the past 25 years, 100 percent of the race proceeds have funded valuable programs for fitness, wigs, navigation services, research and much more. More importantly though, these are the programs that provide the healing support that our mothers, sisters and daughters need when dealing with this disease.
Thank you for caring for our seniors through the building improvements at Avera Prince of Peace. The impact that you have made for the “greatest generation” has been meaningful. Residents will see improved facilities that include an expanded chapel and a main street with various amenities. Even more importantly, convenient spacious areas will be made available where family members may visit loved ones and continue to maintain and expand their relationships.
Thank you for providing for our children by attending The Big Grape: Next Generation or through a donation to the Avera Family Wellness Program. You have made a difference in each of the children’s lives touched by these programs. Your continued support of the Avera Family Wellness Program has demonstrated the need to support children and their families beginning in preschool. What a difference it can make in their lives.
Thank you for continuing our mission through giving to Dougherty Hospice or with a planned gift, as Helen McKennan did over 100 years ago. Your gifts have made possible the programs that have comforted so many families throughout the year. Impacting people during times of need…what a difference you are making through your contributions.
Your generosity has made a difference in so many lives. As you read and hear of all the changes we are currently witnessing in our health care systems, many people begin to wonder if there is a place for health care philanthropy. I often hear comments such as “why should I support health care, everyone will have insurance now.” These changes will have a significant impact for years to come. However, the impact of your donations will continue to be needed to support our mission and programs that focus on the healing of mind, body and spirit. Reimbursement rates have never provided sufficient margins to support those types of programs, nor will they in the future. Your gifts have made that difference in the past and will continue to make that difference in the future. Please consider continued support of our health care ministry.
THANK You.
W. tim Kromminga, Foundation President
Thank you for the gifts that you have made this past year to
our various programs, events and expansions. The impact you have made on people’s
lives throughout the region has been phenomenal. Every gift
has exemplified our values of Compassion, Hospitality and Stewardship. The stories we
hear from our patients and their families regarding the
various programs that you have created through your gifts are
heartfelt and humbling.

It’s been 25 years and we’re still going strong thanks to you as loyal partners and community supporters of the Avera Race Against Breast Cancer. Celebrating this milestone year was certainly a joyous occasion, yet we honor the sponsors, survivors, volunteers and participants for their dedication on Avera Race day and always.
This year’s event, on May 11, drew in more than 6,800 participants and raised more than $400,000 to benefit cancer patients and families served at the Avera Cancer Institute. Thank you again for caring for cancer and the community!
From teams wearing pink wigs and tutus to the Bean Counters for a Cure and their fun annual antics to raise dollars in the workplace, Avera Race teams prove there’s strength in numbers. Throughout the past 25 years, thousands of teams have raised dollars and support for the Avera Race. Thank you to our Avera Race teams and their members, captains and volunteers for their support and participation in making race day fun and successful!

Compassion, dignity and dedication. this past year, the Avera McKennan Foundation has been pleased by the community support in the Caring for Community: Campaign for Avera Prince of Peace. We’re proud that more than $2.2 million has been raised. Thank you to every individual, business and employee who has made a gift. the overall campaign goal is $3 million and we’re grateful for people like you who’ve taken this community gift to the final phase.
since 1986, the church-sponsored facility has served the community. Due to changing needs and demands, Avera Prince of Peace needs renovations to its current accommodations. this past year, plans have taken shape for a new facility that will offer all private skilled nursing rooms, a larger chapel, additional dining spaces and even a “Main street” featuring such conveniences as a hair salon, bank and deli.
Thank you to everyone for Caring for Community by making a gift to support the aging population of our community!
“An expression of respect
is to provide dignified
surroundings and services
which enhance the quality of
life for seniors. Focus on Faith
is designed to meet that hope
by funding a new chapel at
Avera Prince of Peace.”
– Sister Mary ThomasSenior Vice President of Mission Services,
Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center
Practicing faith is important for residents at Avera Prince of Peace. As a church-sponsored facility, our new plans ensure residents have the best access and opportunities to practice their faith. To financially accomplish this, the Avera McKennan Foundation launched the “Focus on Faith” chapel campaign for the last phase of the campaign, and we’re engaging the general community in this vital part of the facility.

rom the moment we arrived, the caregivers were outstanding and took great care of Tracy. They also took care of our family by allowing us to be by her side; ensuring our needs were met both physically and spiritually. I found solace in the outdoor gardens and spent time praying in the meditation room. We were also visited by many chaplains during our stay, which we found comforting.
One day, I noticed a list of names on the wall. I realized these were people who made donations to build this beautiful place. At that moment, I felt blessed at how many members of the community care for people in our situation. If it weren’t for these donors, our family wouldn’t have known what to do. I’m so grateful for the community’s gifts and to the caregivers at the Dougherty Hospice House. It takes a special person to work in a hospice facility and Avera has the best team possible. They allowed us to find peace. Tracy loved to help people. I’m happy there was a place like this available when she needed help.”

Thank you to all the devoted donors and partners for supporting patients and families at the Dougherty Hospice House. End-of-life care is a unique gift that Avera McKennan is blessed to provide. Your gifts further our mission and support the Gospel values of compassion, hospitality and stewardship. Through your financial partnership, countless patients and their families receive loving care in a warm and inviting facility. Thank you for providing ease and comfort during times of need.
One yellow rose. That’s what Tracy lynn Warkenthien would give people during times of struggle as an act of compassion. Her family never expected to be the ones giving her a yellow rose. But on July 27, they did. Tracy passed away at the Dougherty Hospice House after a five-year battle with cancer. Although her family prayed for a miracle, they’re grateful for the compassionate care they received during this time.

“our approach with the Avera Family Wellness Program has resulted in documented success at school, and we
know this also indicates other positive outcomes in homes and in the community.”
– Dr. Timothy Soundy, psychiatrist, Avera Medical Group university psychiatry Associates
Success. With five years of collected research, it’s proven that the AFWP is having an impact by helping children of at-risk families achieve greater success in school. Two specific areas include behaviors and attendance (see chart). Children in the program showed reduced problem and aggressive behaviors compared to children who didn’t receive services. Data from the school district indicate AFWP children also have reduced absenteeism and tardiness in kindergarten to 3rd grade. In addition, discipline events were three times higher with general children than with the AFWP children.
Solutions. The AFWP continues to make strides and find ways to improve the lives and well-being of children, families and the community. The program, a partnership between Avera McKennan and the Sioux Falls School District, was formed to find solutions to an increasing number of children starting school with behavior problems. The approach of treating the entire family has clearly had a positive impact and includes two components:
• Violin InstructionThe AFWP offers Suzuki-like violin lessons by members of the South Dakota Symphony and local instructors to children in the program. With child-sized instruments, children begin lessons starting in preschool and continuing through 3rd grade.
• Family-Based ApproachWellness coordinators establish close connections with families to positively influence and encourage better health and consistent parenting strategies. When needed, the coordinators guide families to mental health services and other community agencies that can assist them. A relationship of trust develops between the coordinators and the families, which allows a continuum of care during a child’s elementary school years.
Support. Through your generous gifts, the AFWP has been able to assist more than 400 students and families enrolled in early childhood HeadStart and Title I programs over the past five years. Thank you to everyone for supporting the community by sponsoring a child, a small group or even a classroom. Thank you for furthering the mission of Avera McKennan. Your dollars are making a difference not only today, but in the future.

“When you have a sick child, it’s important to have faith and to be in a place that lives out its mission. Avera encouraged us and gave us hope. We have a large group of prayer warriors who’ve helped us along the way. We can only wait and pray that Natallie will outgrow her condition. Until then, we are forever grateful to Avera Children’s and those who support their mission.”
