BY BARI AUERBACH mericans now spend nearly as much time using the Internet as they do watching TV. The Aventura Marketing Council’s first Chairman’s Roundtable luncheon of 2013 focused on the emergence of startup technology companies as powerful economic forces and how local businesses can best harness innovation for their benefit. The meeting was hosted by two “technolog- ically advanced” startup companies: Genesis Media – a pioneering video advertising company focused on reinventing how consumers pay for content online; and DS Xpress - providing comprehensive computer services and helping entrepreneurs build business by establishing and optimizing an online presence. AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman welcomed business and community leaders to Turnberry Isle, along with Genesis Media CEO Mark Yackanich, Genesis co-founder, Chairman Andrew Reis and partners Yoav Cohen and Josh Feuer, DS Xpress President Dimitry Shaposhnikov and partner Todd Lynn, who also operate 24/7 Online Printing - Aventura’s “one stop shop for all your design and printing needs.” Based in New York, Genesis Media is an early stage advertising technology darling. Since October of 2011, they have quietly amassed an incredible roster of client partners across Fortune 500 brands such as Ford, Chevy, Chrysler and Walmart. Their proprietary video advertising platform delivers high quality, guaranteed video advertising experiences. Clicking on success, Yackanich explained how businesses can benefit from Genesis Media’s full-spectrum online video distribu- tion reaching 150 million viewers per month across thousands of premium publishing partners. “People are now spending at least half of their media consumption time on the Internet and online video advertising is one of the most effective tools for brand re-call – beating nearly every other media forum from an efficiency perspective, when it comes to reaching market segments.” “Genesis enables advertisers to directly target desired consumers based on their interests and online habits and reach them on a grand scale. By matching consumers and brands, we can also deliver stronger ROI, create new revenue streams for publishers and substantially improve brand awareness.” “True technology innovation and disruption, the kind that creates value for Dimitry Shaposhnikov, DS Xpress / 24/7 Online Printing; Josh Feuer, Andrew Reis, Mark Yackanich and Yoav Cohen, Genesis Media Genesis Media and DS Xpress host ‘Unlocking Potential of Emerging Technology’ February 6 - 19, 2013 A Mark Yackanich, Genesis Media, presents program See MIAMI DOLPHINS, page 8 Miami Dolphins celebrate fan appreciation See GENESIS MEDIA, page 6 Photography by Andrew Goldstein As part of the Miami Dolphins fan ap- preciation activities, punter Brandon Fields, defensive back Richard Marshall and offensive lineman Josh Samuda, T.D. and cheerleaders surprised season ticket members at their homes and place of business. They had been good friends for over ayear. Could talk about everything withoutupsetting one another. All this time theyactually avoided anything in thephysical or bed-bit. They wantedto get to know each other beforetrying anything else. After abouta year they decided that maybe itwould be time to to try livingtogether just to see how it wentwith maybe a future.

He was an early riser just fullof energy from the minute he gotout of bed. Unfortunately she was a lateriser and it took quite a while for her toeven feel civilized at getting up ready to goin the early morning. No talking, no noth-ing until her brain felt that it was time toface the morning and its problems. If any-thing it was “Watch out buster” on anyattempt at action as she was waking up.

He of course was not aware of this partof her and started out by making coffee forthem both. He brought her a cup sat downbeside her, extended the cup with a great

big ”Good morning, what a beautiful dayfor us to get going.”

Her mind was still groping with hersleep. No mood for anything butto cut off this unholy cheeryvoice at this unearthly hour. Shepushed out blindly trying to cutoff this unearthly sound. “Can’tyou see I’m trying to get up, whyall that damn noise?” She swungwildly and knocked the coffeeinto his bathrobe.

She walked back into the bed-room where he was sitting staring at themess on his bathrobe. Put her arms aroundhim and whispered, “Good morning,” hepushed her away, “You messed up my newbathrobe... You’ve killed my day, who doyou think you are?” screaming as sheyelled. End of conversation... and end, end, end.

The moral is the early bird might carchthe worm. But if he deals with a late riser,he might end up being the worm.

That is a problem.

Some things just seem to go togetherlike peanut butter and jelly or coffee andcream and breaking up and breaking down.If there was a list of emotionally painfulevents, breaking up would surely be on it.

Breaking up can cause you to breakdown initially. Even if you are the one whoinstigated or initiated the break up, you canstill break down yourself. You will feel adecrease in your self-esteem and a sense offailure and regret. You may also experiencesome self-doubt and question your abilityto make good judgments.

It is possible that breaking up maybring you a sense of relief. You may feellucky to have escaped a toxic, dysfunction-al relationship. Even so, you will still haveto go through a period of grief, mourningand healing.

The first step is to heal. That means aperiod of mental and emotional rest. Don’tallow yourself to think at all. Stop the

thought immediately by saying somethinglike, “Not now.” There will be time toanalyze the relationship later when it is notso fresh and painful. The only reason toanalyze it is to prevent the same thing fromhappening again. You need to understandyour vulnerabilities so that you choosewisely and differently next time.

A break up creates introspection andsometimes guilt. People sometimes torturethemselves trying to figure out what wentwrong. This is a natural process. Ask your-self what your expectations were and whatyou hoped to experience in the relationship. Were your needs being met? Were youclear about what you wanted from the otherperson? Was the other person capable ofmeeting your needs?

These questions will help you copewith your feelings of anger, shock, hurt, loss and disillusionment. They will helpyou sort out and share the responsibility forwhat went wrong. Once you understand, you can begin to move forward in a newdirection. Knowledge is power and self-knowledge is very powerful.

Ask long-time Nevada residents whytheir state was admitted into the Union onOctober 31, 1864 and the probable answerwould be because its silver and gold pro-duction “was needed to help finance theCivil War.” It’s a wonderful tale but nottrue. According to Nevada State ArchivistGuy Rocha, “The myth of Nevada’s miner-al wealth triggering statehood ranks as oneof the most pervasive fictional stories in theannals of the Silver State.”

Silver was discovered in the NevadaComstock Lode in 1859. On March 2, 1861the United States Congress establishedNevada as Federal Territory and as part ofthe Union. In doing so, Congress ensuredthat Nevada’s riches (silver totaled some$400 million) would help finance the UnionCivil War effort and not the Confederacy. The Federal Government “bought much ofNevada’s silver and gold bullion to supportthe strength of its currency.” Accordingly,Nevada’s gold and silver helping the Union

previously existed in 1861and was not afactor in Nevada’s becoming a state in1864.

The reasons for Nevada’s statehood“were strictly political and not economic.”By 1864, Lincoln, a Republican, also apractical politician, feared he might lose hisre-election presidential campaign. He wasin a three-way race against General GeorgeB. McClellan, a Democrat and GeneralJohn C. Fremont, a Radical Republican.New states, with popular and electoralvotes, were needed to ensure Lincoln’s re-election. In addition, among Lincoln’s pro-posed policies was the 13th Amendmentabolishing slavery. If Nevada was a newstate, it could help elect Lincoln and alsoratify the Amendment and “help in the pas-sage of the landmark humanitarian legisla-tion.” With Union sympathizers, Nevada’sentry into statehood was expedited. Nevadathen sent the entire state constitution bytelegraph for two days (by train it might notarrive on time), consisting of over 16,000words (the longest transmission for 17years) just two weeks before the election.Lincoln declared Nevada a state one weekbefore the election. Freemont dropped outof the race, Lincoln carried Nevada in a rel-atively easy win over McClellan and there-after, Nevada voted to ratify the 13thAmendment.

Medical experts from around theworld gathered to discuss the latestbreakthroughs in Alzheimer’s dis-ease diagnosis and treatment duringthe 11thAnnual Mild Cognitive Im-pairment (MCI) Symposium, hostedby TheWien Center forAlzheimer’sDisease and Memory Disorders atMount Sinai Medical Center. Thesymposium, held on January 19thand 20th at the Miami Beach Resortand Spa, provided a forum for newinformation and in-depth discus-sions about upcoming clinical trialsand advances in research related tothe clinical diagnosis and progression ofAlzheimer’s disease. This symposium is especially significant

as current clinical research to find a cure forAlzheimer’s focuses on patients with MCI.People with MCI have more memory prob-lems than others their age, but their symp-toms are not as severe as the symptoms seenin people with Alzheimer’s disease. How-ever, patients with MCI have a greater po-tential of developing Alzheimer’s. Theearliest possible diagnosis can lead to phar-macological treatment and non-pharmaco-logical interventions to slow the progressionof the disease.

Twenty-five distinguished neurologicalexperts from areas around the world – in-cluding Sweden,Australia and Netherlands,as well as U.S. cities such as Miami,Chicago, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, St. Louis,Phoenix, Boston, Philadelphia, Berkeley,At-lanta and more – presented the latest infor-mation on the earliest stages of cognitivedecline. In addition, the symposium featuredkeynote speeches by two distinguished ex-perts. Todd Golde, M.D., PhD, director ofthe University of Florida’s Center for Trans-lational Research in Neurodegenerative Dis-

ease, delivered a presentation titled, “Solv-ing the Dilemma of Treatment Versus Pre-vention Strategies forAlzheimer’s Disease.”Eric Reiman, M.D., executive director of theBanner Alzheimer’s Institute, addressed“Launching the Era of Alzheimer’s Preven-tion Research”.This year’s event also featured the 2nd

Annual Early Alzheimer’s Diagnostic andTreatment Workshop, which explored hownewly developed diagnostic tests can beused successfully in the early diagnosis andtreatment of Alzheimer’s. The symposiumalso included the 1stAnnual MCI Public Education Forum,

which gave members of the community theopportunity to interact in a panel discussionwith medical experts. The MCI Symposium began in 2003

under the direction of Ranjan Duara, M.D.,medical director of theWien Center. Thanksto the generosity of Marilyn “Lynn” Girsh, the Wien Center will receive financial sup-port to continue the symposium for the next20 years.“I was very impressed with the work that

Dr. Duara is doing at theWien Center,” saidGirsh. “And I especially appreciated the ideaof an international symposium bringing re-searchers together to share their findings anddiscuss new ideas on treating Alzheimer’s.If there is any possibility of finding a cure, Iwould like to do what I can to help.”Unless new treatment options are found to

prevent Alzheimer’s or delay its onset, it isprojected that 13 million people in the U.S.will have the disease by 2050. Since the de-velopment of criteria for Alzheimer’s 25years ago, major advances in understandingof the biology and early clinical features ofthe disease have led to improvement in clin-ical assessments.“Our goal is to continue hosting the sym-

posium to help researchers gain a greater un-derstanding of Alzheimer’s and eventuallydiscover new treatment options that willdelay, prevent or cure the disease,” Dr.Duara said.
