9/11, they asked the Aventura MarketingCouncil (AMC) to assemble South Floridapolice stations and fire rescue departmentsso they could donate to each of them amagnificent mixed media serigraph of thecentennial of the Statue of Liberty, signed ingold by artist Melanie Taylor Kent. “TheStatue of Liberty is our symbol of freedom,hope and opportunity...needed so much nowtoday,” said Herb Barker.

This year, the Barkers partnered with theAventura Marketing Council once again todonate two framed pieces of animationartwork to every charity, non-profit andschool that was an AMC member. The event,hosted by Aventura Turnberry JewishCenter, brought out over 40 organizationswho were thrilled to receive their gifts...withno strings attached. Some organizationschose to place the artwork on auction, somewanted to present it to a major sponsor, andsome wanted to brighten a child’s hospitalroom with it.“I was just thrilled to see the happy and

delighted faces of the wonderful friendswho came to the Art from the Heart event,”said Gloria Barker. “These people dedicatetheir lives to helping others, and I want tocontinue living so I can continue giving!”Herb summed up their philosophy on life,

saying “My hope in giving is that I make theworld a little bit better of a place.”

John wonders why anyone should beunfaithful. He is of the old school where ahandshake is his word; yet has always feltthat in a man–woman relationship it isimportant to see that faithfulnessis the primary requisite. He likesto preach this especially whenMary is with him.

He’ll come out with “here’sMary, she knows that I don’tcheat on her. Why would I? Shealways knows where I am sinceshe also works in my office. Ofcourse she always knows where I am in theevening. Even when we aren’t together sheknows where I’ve gone and she has no rea-son to worry about me. She knows that Iam faithful to her.” His friends and associ-ates hear this and either silently agree ordisagree. They look at their wives or girl-friends and silently compare themselvesto John.

Sometimes it can be boring listening toJohn for an entire evening. With a few

drinks under his belt he has been known togive a play by play of the physical part oftheir relationship. And that can be very bor-ing. Mary sits there and blushes while

gauging the reactions of thewomen present.

Mary will tolerate quite a bitsince her ex-husband was a run-ner who drank and occasionallyslugged her. This doesn’t happenwith John, now she doesn’t fearany of this with him. She knowshe is faithful to her because she

always knows where he is. And there is nohint of him going off their reservation. Heis faithful to her yes, but he is unfaithful tohis wife. Mary is his girlfriend. It’s the wifethat never knows.

One thing Mary knows, no matter whathappens she will never marry John. Shemarries him and just like that, he’ll findsomeone else to be faithful to. As far as sheis concerned being faithful a-la-John?

No way... no way.

It is the nature of human beings to tryto understand the world around them. Theywant to understand why some people lead acharmed life while others lead a life of suf-fering.

While it is true that there are many pos-sible explanations, it does not mean thatthey are the only explanations. Whicheverbelief you hold to be true you need to beaware of the psychological dilemmas andpitfalls that can arise as a result.

The most common explanations andassumptions about life have to do withKarma. Many people believe that their cur-rent lives are some sort of pay back for theirdeeds in other lives. If you believe this youmay judge others unfairly. You may covettheir rewards and dismiss their suffering asa justifiable punishment. Psychologically,it is important to allow that some people’slives and good fortunes or misfortunes are

not based on whether or not they deserverewards or punishments.

Other people believe that you choose totake on your current life with all of its ram-ifications before you are born. If youbelieve this you may tend to be insensitiveand lack compassion. It is important to besympathetic to the misfortunes of othersand yourself. This belief can foster angerwith yourself if you choose a life you don’twant and you don’t like.

While others believe that it is “The luckof the draw”. They believe that things hap-pen to people by chance. That it is destiny,fate or serendipity. This is the least judg-mental belief. However, this belief can pre-vent you and others from trying to improveyour life.

Still others believe that they are here tolearn lessons. This places a lot of responsi-bility on the individual with consequencesif they don’t figure out the lesson correctly.

You may retain your beliefs but beaware of the pitfalls of those beliefs. Takesteps to open your mind and your heartregardless of what you believe.

British General William Howe and hisofficers rested in comfortable winter quartersin Philadelphia, as eighteenth century war-fare remained “a seasonal business.” Howesaw no reason to fight in cold weather, aswell as his having confidence they coulddefeat George Washington and his rag-tailedill-trained troops at any time they desired.Washington struggled at Valley Forge withbaffling questions of housing, feeding, pro-viding clothing and other essentials, as his4,000 vagabond, threadbare men lacked evena single blanket. Some were without shoes.The Continental treasury was bankrupt. Itwas a scene of misery, as disease was ram-pant with unsanitary conditions. Men weredying as others deserted. The only thing thatheld the shaky army together wasWashington’s moral strength.

Three amazing things happened at thatmost critical time. A newcomer arrived sentby Benjamin Franklin in Paris, namelyFriedrich Wilhelm Ludolf GerhardAugustin, Baron von Steuben, who had

served as a Prussian captain in a Europeanwar. Von Steuben, who saw the incrediblybad conditions, was the tough drillmasterthat Washington needed desperately. VonSteuben instilled discipline, eliminatedunhealthy conditions and prepared theContinental army for combat, including theproper use of the bayonet.

With the projectable shortage of sol-diers, a Colonial General from Rhode Islandasked the unthinkable of Washington, a slaveowning Virginia planter, “the right to recruitblack troops.” Knowing it was an incendiaryidea for southerners, Washington, desperatefor manpower, approved the request. RhodeIsland promised to free all slaves willing tojoin an all-black battalion. Massachusettsand Connecticut soon followed. Soon, 755blacks or 5 % of the Continental Army wereblack. The confident Negro soldiers soonproved their merit and were excellent underarms.

As the Continental Army “huddled byfires at Valley Forge,” word reachedWashington that Franklin “had pulled off amagnificent diplomatic feat in Paris – onFebruary 6, France recognized Americanindependence and offered a military allianceand financial support.” Washington had thetreaty read aloud to his troops, followed bythe firing of thirteen cannons. It was a timeof thanksgiving for Continental soldiers whosurvived the horrid winter.

The 2013 Kia Sorento is a good looking,compact crossover utility vehicle (CUV)and it just keeps getting better; it’s reason-ably priced, has good power and fuel effi-ciency, and comes with an expanded rosterof standard comfort, convenience and safe-ty features.

Sorento is offered in three trim levels —LX, EX and SX — and there are threeengine options — an advanced 2.4-literGDI four-cylinder that develops 191 hp and181 pounds-feet of torque and 32mpg/highway; a 3.5-liter V-6 that gets 276hp and 248 pounds-feet of torque, and a2.4-liter Multi-Port Injected (MPI) four-cylinder engine producing 175 hp and 169pounds-feet of torque.

All are mated to a six-speed automatictransmission with Kia’s Sportmatic shiftingcontrol. There is a choice of front- or all-wheel-drive, the latter with a locking center

differential that evenly distributes power toall wheels while operating at low speedsduring severe weather. Sorento uses a com-pact, light MacPherson strut front suspen-sion and a fully independent multi-link rearsuspension for a better ride.

Sorento has a deceptively compact exte-rior and a spacious interior that comfort-ably seats up to seven passengers. The frontend is defined by the signature grille andwraparound headlights found on all newerKia models. The overall design is aggres-sive and sleek, with a swept-back profile,an angled window line, prominent foglights and a rounded nose. The rear isrounded and the taillights are set into therear lift gate.

Sorento comes equipped with 17-inchalloy wheels and body-color, heated out-side mirrors with integrated LED turn sig-nal indicators. The EX trim has 18-inch,five-spoke hyper finish wheels, fog lamps,roof rails and a rear spoiler. EX also offersan optional panoramic sunroof (V-6 modelsonly). The more upscale SX adds mirror-finish 10-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels,chrome-tip exhaust pipes, body-colorwheelwell molding, stainless steel under-bumper trim accents and step pad, sleekerbody-color front and rear bumpers and

LED taillights.Sorento is spacious in both five- and

seven-passenger seating configurations,yielding 142.5 cubic feet of space in thefive-seat arrangement and 149.4 cubic feetin the seven-seat version.

The employees of the City of MiamiBeach Fire Rescue Department are fightingmore than just flames these days. By grow-ing out their mustaches, they were able toraise more than $2,000 for Mount SinaiMedical Center. The fundraising campaignwas for “Movember” - an initiative wheremen grew out their mustaches during themonth of November to help raise awarenessand funds for men’s health issues, such asprostate and testicular cancer.“It is absolutely spectacular to think that

the people we work with every day dealingwith emergencies are now working with us

on the prevention of illnesses such as can-cer,” said Mount Sinai President and CEO,Steve Sonenreich.To make the check presentation, approxi-
