W a y n e M e t r o p o l i t a n Community Action Agency (Wayne Metro) will warm up Ford Field with its annual Wayne County Walk for Warmth on Saturday, February 13, at 8:30 a.m., inside the comforts of Ford Field. The goal of the event is to raise awareness and to keep the heat on for people in Wayne County who are struggling this winter. This family-oriented event, draws hundreds of concerned citizens, companies and students from schools across the County to take a lap or two around the concourse at Ford Field. The demand for assistance

is far greater than the funding available for help. As the heating season wears on, calls into Wayne Metro’s CONNECT call center are increasing. This flurry of need points to mounting hardships for area residents during the winter months. For the underserved and at risk populations, utility shut-offs can and do result in families and seniors turning to unsafe heating options or being displaced from their homes. The Agency administers

utility assistance programs such as the Michigan Energy Assistance Program (MEAP) and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to eligible residents, but those funds can only help households at or below 150% of poverty, which for a family of four cannot exceed $36,450 annually. Walk funds can be used to help those who are above the income and facing

We are headed towards the Brahms Festival, presented by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. We might not come up with a universally agreed-upon answer If we were to raise the question as to who was the most prominent and influential 19th century composer, but there is little doubt that the 19th century would not have been the same without Brahms. There were some rivalries, to be sure, between groups of fans representing Brahms versus Bruckner or Brahms versus Wagner – but in retrospect all of that is just irrelevant nitpicking. For one thing, Brahms didn’t write operas while those others didn’t write concerti f or s olo i n s t r u ment s or – in Wagner’s case – symphonies.Like several others of that per iod, Brahms w rote lighter as well as more serious music. This week’s prog rams of t he DSO, featuring the first parts of the Brahms Festival, begin w it h t hree Hungar ian dances. We have become accustomed to hear Brahms Hu n g a r i a n d a nc e s a s encore pieces at the end of a program. They are popular favorites and to hear three of them will serve as a great introduction. The programs on February 11 (at 7:30 p.m.) and February 12 at (8 p.m.) featuring the beginning of the Festival will continue with the Violin Concer to , Baiba Skride soloist. This work is a pinnacle of the violin repertoire, dedicated to his friend – violinist Joseph Joachim. The program will conclude with Brahms’ Fourth Symphony. Brahms was an admirer of Bach, and the final movement of

PROTECTION FOR CALLUSES QUESTION: I have very painful callus on my foot. How can I protect it from infection! ANSWER: To protect a callus from infection, you can place a thin piece of moleskin over the affected area, taking care to separate it from your skin by using gauze or absorbent cotton. Usually the moleskin is removed each day and replaced with a fresh dressing. Be sure to hold the skin of the sole of your foot taut first, then slowly pull the moleskin back toward your heel. Don’t do it quickly or you may rip the flesh and cause bleeding. It is usually advisable

to remove the moleskin dressing at night when you go to bed, as well as when you take a bath or shower. In some cases, however, your podiatrist may recommend that the dressing be kept on at all times and not removed until he has had an opportunity to examine the callus again.

his final symphony reflects that fact. It is in the form of a Chaconne – variations on a repeated bass pattern. The opening eight chords are based on Bach’s Cantata (“Nach dir, herr, verlanget mich," Cantata No. 150).Of course, there is no way to include all of Brahms’ works in this festival but we will get to hear all of his symphonies, his two piano concertos, his double concerto for violin and cello, variations on a theme of Haydn, and others. Next weekend (Friday, February 19 at 10:45 a.m. as well as 8 p.m.) we will be hearing Brahms’ first symphony, the Academic Festival Overture, and his second serenade. Brahms wrote his two serenades in the 1850s. In a sense they served as a preparation towards the writing of a full symphony. A ndra s Schi f f w i l l be performing in Ann Arbor during this following week as well. Performances will take place on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings and feature the

last three sonatas of Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert. On Tuesday at the Rackham Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. U-M Professor of Musicology Steven Whiting will deliver a preconcert talk. This will be followed at 7:30 p.m. w it h t he sonatas of Haydn No. 60 in C Major, Beethoven No. 30 in E Major, Mozart No. 16 in C Major, and Schubert’s C Minor D.958.On T hursday, Feb. 18, again at t he R ack ham Auditorium, 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday. Feb. 20, at the Hill Auditorium at 8 p.m., Schiff will be performing the remaining works in a similar order. Needless to say, whenever the Brahms Festival and S c h i f f ’s a p p e a r a n c e s overlap, the choice between them presents a daunting dilemma. A n d , n o t t o f o r g e t , professional readings of Jewish literature continue at the Holocaust Memorial Center at 2 p.m. on the next two Sundays (www.JetTheatre.org).

It appears that the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan, perhaps the most respected team of filmmakers in movie-geekdom, have run into an unexpected wall of public disinterest. I’m not certain why that is, except that, in my observation of contemporary movie audiences, they may just be too smart for these times. Take for example, one of the best movies of the past couple of years, in my opinion, Trumbo, starring the ex-Breaking Bad drug-chemist, Bryan Cranston: As of this week, this fine film about a real-life champion of an unpopular cause has grossed just under $8 million dollars since its release in early November.

Now, even though Trumbo is terrific (aside from the couple of glaringly, ridiculously foul historical errors in the script), compared to the almost $1 billion dollars grossed by Star Wars: The Force Awakens as of its release in mid-December, it basically hasn’t even made a tiny blip in the overall consciousness of the movie-going marketplace.

Great movie , fantast ic acting and set design, semi-historical content = no box office. Just an okay movie, expected great digital special effects, mediocre script that’s a virtual retread of the original seminal pop-culture legend = the biggest box office returns of modern times.

And, I do know what the difference is, and that few films will ever meet the challenge of competing with the Star Wars legacy, but my point is less complicated than that. It’s simply that most people nowadays would

CINEMA CULTURE

Film CommentaryBy Paul Arlon

Is the Coen's New Movie Too Smart to Make Money?

rather go easy on their brain than to have to think about something. Hence the state of our Snapchat, Facebook, protein smoothie culture. If a movie doesn’t have the obligatory repetitive schedule of sex/explosions/sex/chase scenes/sex/weapons/sex, etc., well, it just doesn’t get much play in this attention-deficit-instant gratification-without-expending-any-effort society of ours.

Wow, I just made myself sound old. But, I’m not. I still think the thoughts of a much younger guy. And, I still, practice the art of thinking — about a lot of things. Like movie plots, for example. That’s why I think the Coen brother’s new movie, Hail, Caesar! is one of the true gems to hit the big screen. I watched it, I was thoroughly enchanted by its evocation of early 1950’s Hollywood, I got a kick out of the musical numbers reminiscent of Busby Berkeley and his 1930’s syncopated dance numbers with a Scarlett Johansson mermaid, and Channing Tatum as a tap-dancing sailor…and I thought about it. And, the more I do think about it, the

more I like it. The Coen’s writing and

directing skill is right near the top of the Hollywood heap, and in years to come, when revival theatres, museums and film schools dredge up their movies to show to brand new audiences, if I can say this without sounding smugly condescending, thinking people will still get a kick out of their filmography.

Okay, so much for soapboxing the current state of the biz… Here’s the lowdown: Hail, Caesar! written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, stars Josh Brolin, as Eddie Mannix, a Hollywood studio fixer – the guy who gets called at any hour of the day or night to keep the studio’s stars out of trouble and away from negative press. Doesn’t matter what the problem, Eddie Mannix, will muscle-up a solution.

One of Hollywood’s biggest box office leading men, Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), is starring in a movie about the life of Jesus. Whitlock plays an Imperial Roman general ma rching b a ck t hrou gh Jerusalem after his army has sacked Gaul; he arrives at the

Hail, Caesar! from Page 5same time as the Crucifixion is about to take place. Whitlock takes a draught from a goblet, the scene cuts, and he heads back to his trailer for a break – and that’s when he’s kidnapped. Spirited away to a secluded cliff-side house overlooking the ocean, he awakes to find himself in a room of well-dressed, well-spoken men, the leader of whom suggests that Whitlock has another, more important part to play in Hollywood – a political role.

A n d , w i t h t h a t , H a i l , Caesar! rolls through 1951 Hollywood with the speed of a Hudson Hornet in-line six. Eddie Mannix gets the call. Whitlock is gone, and his big Jesus scene is about to film. Not only that, but singing cowboy Hobie Doyle (Alden Ehrenreich) has just been tapped for a break-out role as a young sophisticate trying to bust up a high-society love triangle in a Laurence Laurentz helmer (Ralph Fiennes). The kid can twirl a lasso, but has a hard time with the King’s English.

I won’t go into detail about how all of the plot points get tied together in such a tidy, tight package, but I’ll just say this – the Coens have once again achieved something in Hollywood that few creators have ever done – they’ve filmed a movie that only they could have made. Hail, Caesar! will certainly still be in my Top Ten list at the end of 2016.

Bloody Valentine’s WeekendAn alternative to the

traditional Valentine’s Day outing, The Realm of Darkness Haunted House, in Pontiac opens on Friday, February 12 for three days only to celebrate their annual Bloody Valentine’s Weekend.“Lots of people go on dates

to haunted houses during the Halloween season,” said Denise Siess, owner of The Realm of Darkness. “It’s popular because it’s exciting, scary, exhilarating,

and fun all at the same time! The fear factor gives everybody an excuse to get close and to hold on tight to their date.” Selected as one of

America’s Best Haunted Houses, guests venture through 45 rooms of meticulously crafted interactive nightmares, complete with Hollywood special effects, animatronic creatures, and live actors. Tickets for Bloody Valentine’s Weekend cost $25 per person, with a special $20 Valentine’s Day admission price on Sunday only, using the promotional code “LOVE” available at the box office, online at therealmofdarkness.com or by phone at (248) 338-0400.The Realm of Darkness Haunted House, located at 37

Turk Street in Pontiac, is open from 7 p.m. – Midnight, Friday, February 12 and Saturday, February 13, and from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m. on Valentine’s Day, Sunday, February 14.

By Marian Sakalauskas

Chicago is said to be the longest running American musical in Broadway history and it opened at the Fisher Theatre Tuesday night to a very enthusiastic crowd.

Set in the 1920’s, this dance-centric show tells the story of Roxie Hart (Dylis Croman), a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her extramarital lover in the first scene when he threatens to leave her. In an attempt to escape conviction, she dupes everyone – the media, her cellmate Velma Kelly (Terra C. MacLeod), the public – when she hires a glitzy criminal lawyer, Billy Flynn (John O’Hurley).

That’s the basic story on which a great deal of good dancing and singing rest.

The two ladies, Roxie and Velma, carry the show and their singing and dancing are very good, disciplined and focused. Their energy is contagious and they are clearly enjoying the romp. Their final duet in front of a glittering rain curtain is quite the highlight.

The dance corps serves not only as an example of fabulous dancers but also as various characters to help move the story along. Early in the play the Cell Block Tango has six of the ladies explaining why they are in jail, having killed a husband, lover, or sister, but each claiming her innocence.

Detroit native Roz Ryan appears as Matron “Mama” Morton and she was warmly welcomed to the stage by an audience that was c learly applauding her return home. Interestingly enough, Ryan holds a unique Broadway record, having played more performances of Chicago than any other leading actress in the show’s 18-year run. Her performance of When You’re Good to Mama, Mama’s Good to You brought the house down. I’ve always thought this is the most interesting character in the play, one I’d have loved to play myself.

John O’Hurley enters as

Billy Flynn in a number replete with white ostrich-feather fans carried by six of the ladies of the dance company. The scene is reminiscent of Ziegfeld Follies, but scaled down, since there are only six girls wielding the giant fans. (By the way, you’ll remember O’Hurley as J. Peterman on the TV show Seinfeld.) Flynn’s rendition of Razzle Dazzle is a spectacular but damning comment on the legal system.

Roxie ’s poor cuckol ded husband Amos Hart (Paul Vogt) comes across as a bumbling idiot, but he wins our sympathy when he sings the very hummable Mister Cellophane.

Visually, the musical is pared down and simple. The set is all black, and actors wear black; there are a few black chairs that are brought on for some of the numbers but generally the stage is bare. Except for the orchestra which is on the stage rather than in the pit, which is a nice element. The actors interact with the musicians and the conductor. At one point, Billy Flynn says to the conductor, taking his baton, “You know, if you’d get a real instrument, they’d give you a

chair.”One critic described Chicago

as Bertolt Brecht meets Bob Fosse. The dark subject – greed, murder, and show business – may be Brecht, but the dancing is all Fosse. The original choreography was done by Ann Reinking in the style of Bob Fosse and this troup has certainly retained the snap and style of Fosse. Perhaps the Brechtian moral of the play is that with enough 'razzle dazzle,' a good lawyer can get any criminal off. Best not dwell on that too much.

The book for Chicago is by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. It is the winner of six Tony Awards and two Olivier Awards.

Go see Chicago, playing now through Sunday, the 14th. You’ll thoroughly enjoy the evening and surely walk out humming.
