St. Patrick’s Day St Patrick's Day at Avalon house was full of fun. All Rao
were dressed in Irish green. Our craft group had been busy
creating Irish clovers made out crepe and cardboard.
These were hung throughout the coffee shop and were
used for bunting as well as decorative ornaments for our
wishing tree. The
residents were
entertained by the
wonderful Leyla
and the enjoyed
singing along the
many of the old
classics.
Kindy Easter Hat Parade
Our residents
were very lucky
to receive a visit
from the local
pre-school
children during
March. The
children showed
off their lovely
Easter hats and entertained us all with a number of songs
and dances. The residents were delighted by their
performance and also were surprised with a hand made
gift and card from the children. It was a lovely morning
with smiles all round from the children and our residents.
Animal Farm
During the month of
March the residents
were treated to a
visit by the animal
farm. Residents had
the opportunity to
pat and cuddle with a
number of different
farm animals
including baby ducks
and chickens, rabbits,
piglets, baby goats and
lambs. It was a
wonderful sensory
experience and lovely
to see the smiles that
the animals brought to
the faces of our
residents.
Easter Weekend On Easter Sundays residents
woke up to a treat in their
rooms! Every resident and staff
member was lucky to receive a
chocolate Easter bunny. Our
home was decorated with
bunnies and eggs and residents
received more chocolates
throughout the day. In
celebrating Easter Sunday, we
began with Songs of Praise and
talked about the meaning of
Easter. Many family members
came to celebrate this special
day with their loved ones and it
was a great day for everyone.

ANZAC Day Anzac Day was
commemorated at
Avalon House with a
special Service and a
modified game or 2 of
Two Up. We marked
the occasion with
decorations of poppies
and Australian flags
hanging in our
reception, lounge
areas and on each dining table. The Two Up session was
held in the morning and was well attended by our
residents who seemed to enjoy themselves. In the
afternoon our Anzac service was led by Shelagh and
Minister Sturt Young who spoke some moving and
special words. Neville
delivered the Ode for us
and said he was honored
to do so. After the
service our residents
enjoyed singing along to
some old familiar tunes
led by Shelagh who was
accompanied by
Maureen on the piano.
We were very grateful
for their wonderful
contribution. It was an
important and special
day for our residents.
Book Club Recently we have implemented a book here at Avalon
House. Residents are visited monthly by library
volunteers who provide a number of books in a range of
different genres. The program is becoming increasingly
popular amongst the residents and they all look forward
to the opportunity to change their books.
Ballroom Dancing
In March and April
some of the staff
were involved in a
music and dancing
research project.
Initially this project
focused on our
Dolphin Unit group
of residents. For 6
weeks we
concentrated on
listening to and enjoying music (and limited television
watching). On Tuesday afternoon’s the happy hour
became a dancing event and residents and staff enjoyed
learning and dancing to the old songs that were popular in
the ‘salad days’ of our residents. It was such a joyful time
that the program was extended to all the residents and
when the project finished we held a big party in the main
lounge room with 2 professional dancers to teach and
dance with everyone. It was lovely to see the residents come
alive with smiles on their faces and excitement in their
mannerisms. For many of the residents dancing was an
important part of their youth and it was wonderful to share
this with them.
Mother’s Day Mother's Day at Avalon
House was a great
celebration. Our residents
spent time with their
families, it was wonderful to
see the joy and love for the
mothers, grandmothers and
great grandmothers. The
celebration continued with
happy hour where
champagne and cheese
platters were served. The
coffee shop was decorated
beautifully and residents were entertained with music
during the special afternoon tea.
