An emergency pump in chemical plant is to be powered by alternate steam engine systems as described below:
•Option 1 – open cycle .•Option 2 – Closed cycle.
![Page 30: Auxiliary Equipment Simulation](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081622/613d5013736caf36b75bd788/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)

Option 1: Open cycle (non-cyclic process) - Feed water will enter the pump at 1 atm and 100oF. The water is pumped to a pressure of 100 psia and passed into a boiler, where it is converted to sat’d steam. From the boiler the steam enters the turbine, where it is expanded to 1 atm. A portion of the work produced by the turbine is used to power the feed water pump; the remainder is the useful work of the engine. If the turbine is operated in an adiabatic and reversible fashion, please determine efficiency, i.e., the net work produced per unit of thermal energy supplied to the boiler.

31
Option 2: Closed cycle (cyclic process) -It is suggested that a condenser is added to bring the turbine outlet back to the feed pump, please determine the efficiency.

Rankine cycle calculation
A steam generating station operates on the Rankine cycle with super heat. The boiler tubes are restricted to a maximum pressure of 100 psia, and cooling water is available at 120 F. The condenser is designed for a 30 F temperature approach. The superheater and condenser operate so that the expander and pump handle only single phase materials. The pump and expander may be considered to be adiabatic and reversible. Please 1) determine the superheat (F)needed, and the thermal efficiency of the cycle, 2) If new boiler tubes that can withstand a pressure of 200 psia are installed, determine the new thermal efficiency of the cycle.
