or technological solutions that are eective and proftable.
As a global leader in surace engineering solutions and ser-
vices, we help solve the surace technology challengesaced by the automotive industry.
Surace enhancement engineering basically changes the
surace o a material by additive processes such as ther-
mal spray, plasma PVD (physical vapor deposition), CVD
(chemical vapor deposition), plasma nitriding or nitrocar-
burizing (PNCwith or without oxidation) to deposit a thin
flm or coating that cost-eectively enhances the physicalproperties o the substrate. In eect, this coating creates a
new material superior to either one by itsel.

Synchronizer
Besides the time-tested molybdenum riction linings, the
new carbon riction linings ensure a more compact syn-
chromesh architecture with higher perormance and sub-stantially improved gear shiting. In automated manual
transmissions, it is already possible to achieve gear shit-
ing times o less than 60 milliseconds. Furthermore, our
synchromesh components rom ormed sheet metal oer
the substantial weight savings and cost reductions.
Friction discs
Sulzer EUROFLAMM develops and manuactures ric-
tion discs or wet applications. We can meet the high de-
mands imposed on the components by the various ap-plications (limited slip dierentials, our wheel drives,
automatic power transmissions) through the optimized
use o our various riction linings. In particular the minimal
wear and the constant coefcients o riction are convinc-
ing arguments or our customers.
Torque converter lock-up clutches
In automatic transmissions the torque converter lockupclutch serves to transmit the engine torque directly to
the power transmission, thus achieving a signifcant re-duction in uel consumption. The use o carbon riction
linings simultaneously guarantees an optimization o the
gear-shiting process and reduces the noises and vibra-
tions typically associated with converters.
Gear-shifting components
For selector orks and shiting components we oer spe-
cial molybdenum and brass coatings that guarantee high
wear resistance. Even in automated manual transmis-
sions with their high axial gear-shiting orces, our coat-ings have proven their high efciency over time.

CapabilitiesOur Engineered Solutions Yield Proven Benets
We can partner with you to deliver a turnkey solution that
meets your surace treatment needs. Below are examples
o how our sales, design, engineering and manuacturing
talents are coordinated and ocused to meet your speci-ic requirements:
Automotive Cylinder Bore Coating System
Working in close cooperation with major automotive man-
uacturers, Sulzer Metco developed advanced spray tech-
nology to deposit a thin (150-200 microns) plasma coatingdirectly onto aluminum alloy cylinder bores. This process
eliminates the need or cast iron or composite cylinder lin-ers. The controlled porosity o the plasma coating helps to
signifcantly reduce the coefcient o riction through a mi-
cro-cavity lubrication system. Fully automatic spray acili-
ties, such as those created by Sulzer Metco, can be inte-grated into any production setup in line or cell. Prototype
engines using our cylinder bore coating system were op-
erated or up to 400,000 km (250,000 miles) without need
o repair. Following on this example, thousands o produc-
tion cars have been manuactured using our cylinder boresolution. This technology works or gasoline as well as die-
sel engines and Sulzer Metco also applies it to high peror-
mance race cars, go-karts, motor bike engines, aeroplanes
and heavy duty diesel engines.
Automotive Transmission ComponentsSulzer Metco provides the worldwide standard solution
or thermal spray coating o synchronization rings, clutch
discs and gearshit orks. About 50% o all cars worldwide
have manual transmissions, and drivers are demanding
quick, smooth, compact and comortable shiting. Our total
coating solution meets that demand.
Thermal spray coating with molybdenum wire, applied in
a highly automated system, guarantees total process re-
liability and coating reproducibility. The coating provides
the correct balance between meshing and gear separa-tion giving the right eel when a driver changes gears. In
the example o the sequential transmission, we oer a pat-
ented, hard carbon coating or synchronization rings to
meet increased perormance and service demands.
Gear Selector Shaft and Other Applications
IONIT OXtreated gear selector shats oer an optimum
combination o wear and corrosion protection to the com-
ponent. IONIT OX is a combination o plasma nitriding,
gas nitrocarburizing, plasma activation and oxidizing. Cost
eective and oering a great improvement in mechanical
properties, such as improved atigue limit, many automo-tive products currently utilize this process:

Plasma Coated Engine Cylinder Bores
Cut Costs, Reduce Friction, Improve Fuel Use
with a Longer Lasting Solution
Endeavoring to meet cost and weight constraints, as wellas uel economy standards, the auto industry has beenmoving away rom heavy cast iron engine blocks to lighteraluminum alloys (AlSi).
To help enable this process, Sulzer Metco has developedan advanced plasma spray technology or coating AlSi cyl-inder bores that eliminates the need or cast iron sleevesor composite liners, saving space and weight. Wear resis-tance o these coatings is an order o magnitude betterthan cast iron and the heat ow between the combustion
chamber and the engine block is much more predictable.Weight o the cylinder block, as well as the pitch distancebetween bores, is reduced.
Result: a lighter, more compact and fuel-efcient en-gine, with signicantly reduced oil consumption andlower emissions.
The main challenge o an industrial solution or the coatingo cylinder bores is not only to develop a suitable materialand process, but also to integrate that process into a cost-eective, high-volume, ully automated production coating
system. We have met this challenge.
