At the Annual General Meeting in Launc eston, permission was given to alter Melbourne from '82 to '83. The letter below will explain the reoson. We all hope that this will not inconvenience anyone too much so please get behind Queensland

and make it a bumper '82 in October.

24th National Square Dance Convention, 1983 The Committee for the Mel·

boume Convention wish to ex· plain the e~'en ts which led to the changes made at the Gen· eral Meeting held in launceston, Wben bids taken for the 1983 and 1984 Conventions were com· pleted. 1983 was left vacant. The National Square Dance Sociely of Australia undertook 10 hold this Convention in a location yet 10 be decided .

P.o_ Bax 185, Rosanna 3084 Following this our Conveners

brought 10 notice the excessive advertising being conducted by the Committee for the Jamboree and the effect Ihis could have on a National held in the same ~'ear, A suggestion was made for Brisbane 10 incorporate the 23rd National with the Jamboree in 1982. thus allowing Melbourne to hold the 24th National in 1983.

The General Meeting in Laun· ceston gave permission for the change to be arranged. The reo !>lIlt oli negotiations was made known during the evening ses· sion of dancing. Brisbane would incorporate the 23rd National with the Jamboree in October. 1982. and Melbourne would hold the 24th National in 1983.

As the Melbourne Committee

has learnt tha t !!oCveral State functi ons are held al Easter, while no date has yet been fixed. we will avoid Easler in 1983 ,

We do sincerely apologi!!oC for any inconvenience: to the: dan· cers who ha\'e already made arrangements for the original dates.

We therefore encourage people to organi ce themselves in groups of four.

We will be oo-ordinating the demand for taxis at Offioial Accommodation

and the Venue . A range of acoommodation haa been reserved.

VICTORIAN STATE REPORT - 1933

Victorwa has had a very busy and exciting year amidst the prepar ations for the National Convention. Throughout the whole State we have been receiving reports of good attendances at the regular square and round dance club nights. Party nights, Dinner Dances and Cabarets have elRo beBn well supported, in fact, the organisers of these fun c tions a re finding that they a re having to limit th~ numbers present, in order to ensure the dancing comfort o~ those in Rttendance.

The Callers Association ha s been working towards the continuous p r omotion of Square Dq.ncing, and this year has seen new clubs coming into oper~tion and pro gr e ssing well. The Danc ing Association a lso is :tluays looking for promotional opportunities. WE consider our rec ent i Ioomha promotions to be our best for some years, reaching an ~udience of SOIDe 2:.5 l.1li l l ion people. We hope that next ye~.r we may be a ble t o report o~ a nother very large promotion in September of chis year p involving the Royal l1elbo urne Show .

THE SQUARE DAlICE SOCIETY OF !lEII SOUTH \IALES .

STA'J:E REPORT. February, 1983.

Things in the Squar e Dance Horld a r e going a long very nicely for New South Hales ~ the Clubs that were squaring up in October. time of our last report , are still going strong, some hevs nlready sta~ted new beginner classe s with mixed results as to numbers gained of ra\;I beginners. The average seems to be about :2 square s per promotion. per Club.

The New South \>18.1 e5 Callers didn I t accept the Societies offer of a big square dance promotion for early this year, as they have decided to set up a squnre Dance Promot~_ons Committee. If vIe are to spem.1 up to $lOpOOO on n promotion, then they want the most out of the expendi ture. covering every Club in th e a r ea of New South ,·Jales ~ and as it is a one off affair fo r sometime~ the money is to be spent where it will do most good for squa r e dancing . This will be done on the advice of the Promotions Committee later on.

We have still r.l. ore and !Jore functions being added to our Square Dance Calendar by individuB.l callers hoping to satisfy the dam9.nds of particular square dancers. I, (d~ Pres ident of New South \Yales and a pretty keen eye on the future of squar e dance surviva l p think thf:1.t we are running very c lose to emptying the smaller ~quQ.re dance club's who feed the mo.in stream of square dFt.ncers attendinff these functions~ a nd if 1'1e don ' t do sOl!\ething about helping the srne.ller (;lubs survive this onslaught on their danca r s p then we a r e taking a backward step in favour of R f'CVl selfish dancElrs, who in a fe~T yenrs will be out of square dancing beeRus6 callers are not go ing to keep feed ing the favoured few dancers from their hard oarned clubs. L(Jt ' shope our new Promotions COillmittee can come up with an £I.TISHer to satisfying everybody's needs~ more dancers.

"One Night Stands" still in great dema.nd, they must be~ as we have about fifteen (15) caller s doing them and nothin6 very much for squp.r=e dancing. Thanks to the forsight 01' our Callers Ji.ssocio.tion p

we aren ' t runnin g any more Caller Classes for a while in the hope thnt those that have been accepted, put soruething back into square dancing.

Our State Convention , to be held in Port Ma cquarie , is well under way and should present 0. good shml.

November Competition Fes I:.i val \-/as a roaring succesr., with close to 1 ,000 a ttend ing the split sessions . fl. great visuf~ l spectacular of square dancing was given to all th~ spectators attending .

We attended as inany Christmas parties as was pOflsiblo this year~ and if the Clubs could keep that kind of spirit within their Clubs for the r est of the year p \.;e would never lose dancers from Square Dancing. Yours Squarely , Me rv Sharpe , President: tI.S.;I.S.D.S.

The Review is still being very well supported by some States .

Other States can positively assist by using it to advertise

items of National Interest, such as Major Functions and State

times of the year and it would help them if they kBew in advance

what ~ctions were coming up.

Our thanks to the V.S.D.A. in their support of se~ling the

example in ~eeping up the Sale of these Buttons at future

Year Buttons: Charles Krix enlarged on last years suggestion

that it would b e helpful i~ the year buttons were sold as part of

taken it upon themselves to guarrentee the Convention Committee

for the cost of that package to be recouped if the Convention :

funds ar,e ,in~u~~icient to cover co~ ,ts. The V.S.D.A. has taken

it on their shoulders to create the situation, it is a direct
