Pigeons offend ... as they fly overhead “revealing the genitals”.

• Islamic extremists in Syria and Iraq have banned citizens breeding pigeons, and claim the act facilitates intrusion. They also say that raising the birds wastes time that should be spent praying. Those who break the rules will face flogging, fines and even imprisonment Earlier this year ISIS executed three boys they found breeding pigeons. The announcement isn’t the first time ISIS has targeted the apparently blasphemous practice of pigeon breeding which is a popular pastime in the Middle East. When rumours of an ISIS ban on pigeons began to circulate earlier this year, it was widely assumed that it was related to the birds being used to either smuggle anti-ISIS messages or cigarettes. However a new document clears up that misunderstanding, stating that the ban is intended to put a stop to the greater criminal act of harming one’s Muslim and Muslim women neighbours, revealing the genitals and wasting timeʼ. The ban is claimed to be designed to stop pigeon keepers from peering into neighboursʼ homes. The phrase “revealing the genitals” is appar-ently idiomatic, just like the expressions “storm in a teacup” or “flown the coop”.

Continued from the last issue Polygamy is clearly permitted in Islam. Sura 4:3 of the Quran ad-vises a man to marry up to four wives providing he can look after them equitably. Muhammad had some 11 wives plus concubines or slaves. In Australia and Brit-ain, it is illegal for a married man to marry another woman. How-ever, polygamy is not uncom-mon owing to a legal ‘loophole’. Soon after Britain legalised po-lygamist marriages in 2008, Aus-tralia followed. The changes to the Australian Family Law Act 1975 enabled recognition of Islamic marriages in Australia as de facto marriages, which have the same legal requirements and entitle-ments as other de facto relation-ships. There is a legal loophole in the Australian Marriage Act 1961; Part V A of the Act allows for for-eign marriages if the marriages were valid under local law. The le-gal condition is that a polygamist marriage must have been carried out in another country where po-lygamy is legally recognised. Each spouse can then claim welfare. Islamic jurisprudence from the Reliance of the Traveller says that the wives must be kept in separate dwellings unless they agree to live together. That ruling also makes it easier for the ‘de facto wife’ to claim single parent welfare; and cases have been reported of the husband demanding the ‘de facto wife’ support herself from welfare. Nikah or Islamic religious mar-riages are common in Australia, but are not recognised or registered under the Australian Marriage Act. Because the marriage is not regis-tered, a wife can be left without any settlement or custody in the event of divorce or the death of the hus-band. Legal experts on sharia law in Australia, Kerrie Sadiq and Ann Black, state that “A system of legal pluralism abounds in Australia”; and that illegal Islamic marriages are not pursued by the law un-less underage wives are involved. In Britain it was found that a loophole in the law allowed wives to be under the age of con-sent if the marriage occurred overseas. There are also cases of child brides in Australia. When it was reported that there were 23 child brides in Wollongong NSW (ABC News Nick Mclaren 5 March 2014) a respondent sug-gested that they could be the result of arranged marriages overseas. To see how marriage is under-stood in an Islamic country, Rafia

Zakaria, a columnist for DAWN, Pakistan’s largest English language newspaper, reveals what happens in Pakistan. There, the Council of Islamic Ideology determines whether the country’s laws are in accordance with Islam. In 2014 the Council ruled that existing legisla-tion requiring a man to obtain writ-ten permission from existing wives before marrying another were un-Islamic and needed to be amended. They later announced that laws prohibiting the marriage of minors were also un-Islamic. Puberty, not age, determines eligibility for mar-riage, said Maulana Muhammad Khan Sheerani, the Chairman of the Council. The pronouncements of the Council usually pave the way for legislative amendments. The slogan of bringing the coun-try in line with Islam has legiti-mized many a military dictator and unpopular prime minister.

In contemporary Pakistan, po-lygamy is being revived as the marital expression of the authenti-cally Islamic society that Pakistan so aches to be, touted as a solution to the problem of destitute women, the prevalence of adultery, a man’s greater need for sex, and myriad other problems. Abandoned first wives and neglected children have no legal mechanism for sustenance or support. With Islamic extremist groups gaining ground in Pakistan, many politicians, liberal or other-wise, see imposing the Council’s

recommendations as convenient political ploys to negotiate the post-Taliban peace that everyone wants. After all, if one of their wives com-plains, they can always get another.Rafia is the author of The Upstairs Wife: An Intimate History of Pakistan.Polygamy and Child Wives: Womenʼs Rights Are Go-ing in the Wrong Direction in Pakistan, 24 October 2014 New Republic by Rafia Zakaria

Fear continued from page 1

The MediaRemember the Danish cartoons of Muhammed? and more recently the cover cartoons of the French maga-zine Charlie Hebdo and the murder of people who worked on that mag-azine? The international media had plenty to say about free speech and defending the right to offend, but would not show the Charlie Hebdo cartoons. The newspapers and broadcasters were scared of upset-ting the followers of Islam and the violence that would follow. In con-trast, in 1997 the Australian media argued for free speech when a pho-tograph that was deeply offensive to Christians, titled Piss Christ was displayed at the National Gallery of Victoria. Almost two decades later, anyone who protests about the offence created by Ofili's Holy Virgin Mary (in elephant dung) at the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart is called ‘intolerantʼ. Christians might object, but do notsilence others through ex-treme violence and murder.

The Islamic StateThe Islamic State or ISIS are masters in the game of creating fear. When IS attacked the Iraqi city of Mosul, they were massively outmanned and outgunned by the Iraqi army, which fled in fear. It wasn't a case of the Iraqi army been driven out by IS, but it drove away in vehicles, most of which had been supplied by the United States. The highly publicised beheadings and other executions by IS creates fear which makes people, villages and towns submit to them without a fight. Muhammad said “I have been made successful through terror.”

The Churches and Inter-Faith FraudChristian leaders living in Islamic countries fear violence and have a history of trying to appease the Islamic majority. This appease-

ment is well-documented in Mark Durie’s book The Third Choice: Islam, Dhimmitude and Free-dom. Durie cites examples of where fearful non-Muslims are eager to placate the Muslims and even deny the persecu-tion of their own community. In 1998 a priest from the Lat-in Patriarch in Jerusalem urged people to believe that news about persecution of Christians in the Middle East was just “propa-ganda against Islam to benefit the Zionists of Israel”. That be-haviour reinforces the silence

about the suffering of the Chris-tian community. In 2008 the Egyp-tian Ahmad al-Aswani commented on the increasing attacks on Coptic Christians in Egypt, holding Chris-tian clergy partly responsible for denying that Islamic sentiment was behind the abuse. He wrote that af-ter attacks: “Of course the usual Coptic notables deny any suspicion of sectarianism and affirm national unity, and the sheik and priest em-brace”. Such inter-faith dialogue is a fraud, as the Arabic Coptic Christians are still being perse-cuted, and have been eliminated from much of the Middle East.

In the Western world Christian churches are just as scared of Is-lam and are equally silent about the persecution of Christians. A decade ago, in Bradford, Eng-land, a family converted from Islam to Christianity, only to have their lives and property threatened. The Anglican Bish-op of Bradford met the converts with his inter-faith advisor, and the family were advised that the Anglican Church would not welcome such converts into it. The Anglican Christians were scared of upsetting their comfort-able relationship with the Islam-ic leaders. Inter-faith dialogue and cross-cultural curry nights prevailed. (Durie, The Third Choice, p. 220; see also The Voice for Global Orthodox Anglican-ism www.virtueonline.org.)One of Islam’s aims is to elimi-nate all Jews. Yet often Jew-ish communities speak fa-vourably of Islam. Why? Perhaps they fear an even more hateful assault on them.

If we do not stand up to the extremists, we will all lose. Cowards cannot keep run-ning away forever, one day we will have to make a stand.

* An expert opinion Islamic or Sharia law is based on the teachings, words and deeds of the prophet Muhammad. The Reli-ance of the Traveller is considered by scholars and legal experts to be a reliable source of Islamic juris-prudence. Another source of Mu-hammed’s sayings is Abdul Hamid Siddiquiʼs translation of Sahih Mus-lim Book of Prayers. The Quran has been described as Muhammadʼs personal document and marks the progress of his prophetic career. A Sura is a chapter in the Quran. From Sahih Muslim Book of Prayers ... the Messenger of Allah [Mu-hammed] said: ‘I been given su-periority over the other proph-ets ... ; I have been given words ... ; I have been helped by terror (in the hearts of enemies); spoils have been made lawful to me ...ʼQuran Sura 3:151 Soon We will put terror in the hearts of those who disbelieve, for they have joined with Allah that for which Allah has sent down authority; and their resort is the Fire [of Hell]. Sura 8:12-13 ‘ ... I will cast ter-ror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved; so strike them above the necks and smite of them every fingertip.ʼThis because they defied Allah and His Messenger [Muhammed] and whoever defies Allah and his Messenger, then surely Al-lah is Severe in chastisement.

In November 1912, Broken Hill’s newspaper The Barrier Min-er featured an article about ji-had and warned that it “may cause bloodshed in Australia”.

Broken Hill - Australia’s First Jihad 1915by John Severus

At the beginning of 1915 therewere no weather forecasts for Aus-tralia, and for the New South Wales mining town of Broken Hill, there was no need because the inhabitants knew it would be hot for the New Year’s Day picnic. That day, em-ployees of the Broken Hill Mining Company, together with their fami-lies, boarded a train to travel to their picnic destination. World War One, then only five months old, must have seemed very far away; but just three kilometres along the rail-way track, Badsha Gool Mahomed and Mullah Abdullah were about to bring the war to Broken Hill. Abdullah was known to the po-lice for offences involving the halal slaughter of animals on unlicensed and unhygienic premises. Both men were linked by Islam, and known to smoke gungha (marijuana). From the train the passengers could see a familiar sight - Gool’s ice cream cart, parked near the line and, strangely, flying the crescent flag of the Turkish Ottoman cali-phate. Neither man was a Turk, but came from countries known today as Pakistan and Afghani-stan. They had responded to the Turkish caliphate’s call to jihad. Until the first fusillade of bullets struck the occupants of the train the picnickers assumed that the two men were out rabbit shooting.

When people started falling the horrid reality struck home and be-fore the train had passed, three of its passengers had been killed and six wounded. An estimated 20 to 30 shots were fired before the train was out of range. The police and an army unit of the local militia were contacted and attempted to cap-ture the gunmen. Meanwhile, the jihadis murdered another person and then shot and wounded a con-stable before taking shelter behind a rocky outcrop for their last stand. A 90 minute gun battle ensued with armed civilians joining the po-lice, militia and army. During this fight another resident was struck and killed by a stray bullet. He was the fifth victim to die. Eventually the jihadis were killed by the police. Gool Mahomed had in his belt a letter stating that he was a subject of the Ottoman Sultan and that “I must kill you and give my life for my faith, Allahu Akbar”. Mullah Abdullah, in his last letter, said that he was dying for his faith and in obedience to the order of the Sultan. A mob formed to storm the ‘Asi-atic’ Camp was turned back by the police and there were no reprisals against the local Islamic population. Then, as now, the newspapers failed to comprehend the deadly rationality of the actions of the two jihadis; despite it only being a cou-ple of years since a warning was made about Islamic extremism.
