AFTER years of hype, concepts, teasers and leaks, Toyota has this week officially pulled the covers off its long-awaited fifth-generation Gazoo Racing (GR) Supra sportscar at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

With a Down Under debut earmarked for later this year, Toyota Australia has only managed to secure a first-year allocation of 300 units, all of which will be built in Graz, Austria, alongside the Supra’s platform-sharing BMW Z4 sibling.

At launch, the Australian-spec Supra will be powered by a twin-scroll-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine – dubbed RZ in Japan – that produces 250kW and 500Nm of torque and sends drive to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle-shifters.

Toyota claims it will accelerate from zero to 100km/h in just 4.3 seconds – 0.3s quicker than its top-

spec BMW Z4 M40i counterpart that shares the same engine configuration, output and driveline.

International markets will also have access to two lower grades, SZ-R and SZ, powered by turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines producing 190kW/400Nm and 145kW/320Nm respectively.

As a result, 0-100km/h times push up to 5.2s in the SZ-R and 6.5s in the SZ.

Toyota Australia has not ruled out the lower-tier Supra variants for local market consumption, but says its focus is on launching the six-cylinder version first.

Pricing is still an unknown for the reborn Supra, which could line up against the 253kW/371Nm Nissan 370Z Nismo (priced from $61,490 plus on-road costs), 224kW/441Nm Ford Mustang EcoBoost (from $49,990) or even the 177kW/350Nm Alfa Romeo 4C (from $89,000) and 221kW/400Nm Jaguar F-Type 2.0-litre (from $107,012).

For reference, in the US, the six-cylinder Supra will launch mid-2019 starting from $US49,990 ($A69,368).

Underneath the bodywork, the Supra rides on double-joint spring MacPherson struts at the front and a five-link set-up in the rear, with adaptive dampers equipped to Australian-spec vehicles as standard.

Also fitted at no extra cost to the Aussie Supra will be an active differential that operates via a dedicated electronic control unit and monitors inputs such as steering angle, throttle application, engine speed and yaw rate for improved grip.

Measuring 4380mm long and 1865mm wide, the new Supra is both 140mm longer and 90mm wider than its 86 sportscar sibling.

Crucially, however, the Supra’s 2470mm wheelbase is 100mm shorter than its stablemate, while its front and rear tracks are also wider at 1594mm and 1589mm in six-pot

and SZ-R form.Curiously, the track width in the

base SZ grade is a wider 1609mm front and 1616mm rear.

All forms of the fifth-generation Supra will also be lower than the 86 with the former pegged at 1295mm in overall height (1290mm in four-cylinder versions) and the latter at 1320mm.

Targeted towards the enthusiast driver, the born-again Supra is said to have more structural rigidity than the Lexus LFA supercar and a lower centre of gravity than its 86 sportscar stablemate.

A perfect 50:50 front/rear weight balance also features, while 19-inch wheels, high-performance brakes and “an extensive list of advanced safety features” will also be on offer.

According to Toyota, the six-pot Supra tips the scales at 1520kg, while the four-cylinder versions weigh in at 1450kg (SZ-R) and 1410kg (SZ).

Two drive modes are available, Normal and Sport, with the latter tweaking engine sound and

response, transmission tuning, and damper, steering and active differential settings.

Traction can also be toggled into a “track” setting for increased slip.

Despite the wind being knocked out of Toyota’s sails late last week as leaked images circulated the internet, the reborn Supra still

manages to stun thanks to its striking, almost ‘un-Toyota-like’ bodywork.

Characterised by a long bonnet, compact cabin and short overhangs, the new-generation Supra not only pays homage to its forebears, but also Toyota’s landmark 2000GT of the late 1960s.

Up front sits a prominent grille flanked by large side air intakes and sleek headlights, while the blacked-out A-pillars blend with the glasshouse and black-coloured side mirror mouldings to give the windscreen a helmet visor-like look.

LEXUS has taken to the Detroit motor show to reveal the Track Edition version of its RC F, which headlines a broader update that will reduce weight, refine dynamics, improve acceleration and tweak styling for the sportscar when it enters Australian showrooms in May.

The RC F’s weight reduction comes courtesy of hollow rear axle shafts replacing solid units, a smaller intake manifold and air-conditioning compressor, and the adoption of aluminium for the toe-control and upper suspension support brackets.

Dynamically, stiffer bushings for the rear suspension arms and steering rack mounts hone feel, while more rigid engine mounts

help improve the efficient transfer of power to the ground from the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8.

The engine has been upgraded with revised intake routing and a lower engine speed trigger point for the secondary intake opening, down 800rpm to 2800rpm.

However, the Japanese brand is yet to quote power and torque figures for the Australian-market model that currently produces 351kW at 7100rpm and 530Nm from 4800-5600rpm.

While an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission carries over, launch control is new for the rear-wheel-drive RC F, which can sprint from standstill to 100km/h in “just over” four seconds, according to Lexus.

Meanwhile, the BMW M4 CS-

baiting Track Edition ups the ante with its extensive use of carbon-fibre that contributes to an overall weight loss of about 65kg, compared to the pre-facelift RC F.

The lightweight material features on the Track Edition’s unique front airdam, bonnet, roof, boot partition, bumper reinforcement and fixed rear wing, which reduces drag and increases downforce by up to 26kg.

Furthermore, the standard carbon-ceramic brake discs with Brembo

callipers and BBS 19-inch forged alloy wheels reduce the Track Edition’s unsprung weight by 25kg.

The inclusion of a titanium muffler and tailpipes generate a unique sound and create a polished look while further shedding weight.

As a result, the Japanese luxury marque is targeting a 0-100km/h acceleration time of about four seconds for the Track Edition, which uses the same engine, transmission and drivetrain

combination as the regular RC F.Inside, the Track Edition sets itself

apart with red leather upholstery, Alcantara-accented seats and Red Carbon trim on the doors and dashboard. Four paintwork options – White Nova, Sonic Titanium, Graphite Black and Matte Grey – are available.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres are now fitted to either variant as standard, featuring a profile shape, tread pattern and rubber compound that are unique to the RC F, with the aim of reducing understeer, improving overall lateral grip and increasing durability in extreme conditions.

LEXUS has lifted the lid on its LC Convertible concept at the North American International Auto Show (NAIS) in Detroit, which, given its near-production design, could hit showrooms as early as next year.

Though not yet confirmed for the road, the styling of the four-seat LC Convertible largely mirrors its coupe sibling that debuted at the same event in 2017 – with one obvious exception.

Wearing Lexus’ signature spindle grille up front, a long bonnet and

sleek headlights, the coupe and drop-top are almost identical from the A-pillar forward.

However, the removable top means no B-pillars for the LC Convertible, while the rear decklid has been reworked to accommodate the folding and stowage of the roof.

The LC Convertible concept also features 22-inch wheels that will likely be shrunk to 21 inches to match the coupe’s hoops and maximise ride comfort if the show car makes it to production.

Meanwhile, the interior also appears to carry over from coupe to convertible, with what appears to be the same 10.3-inch infotainment system, 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster, leather appointments and plush first-row

sports seats, the latter finished in white for the drop-top concept.

Measuring 4770mm long, 1920mm wide and with a 2870mm wheelbase, the LC Convertible matches its coupe sibling in all dimensions barring height, where it sits 5mm lower at 1340mm.

The folding roof mechanism will likely add extra kilos to the coupe’s already hefty two-tonne weight, which should also slightly dull performance from either the 351kW/540Nm 5.0-litre petrol V8

or 264kW/348Nm 3.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid powertrain.

For reference, both automatic versions send drive to the rear wheels, with the bent-eight coupe able to accelerate from zero to 100km/h in just 4.7 seconds via a 10-speed torque-converter automatic transmission, while the more environmentally friendly LC500h hits the landmark triple digits in 5.0s via its four-speed torque-converter and six-step continuously variable transmission.

Fuel consumption will also likely take a penalty in the open-air LC. The V8 coupe returns 11.6 litres per 100km and the fixed-roof hybrid sips 6.7L/100km.

Pricing for the road-going LC Convertible is also expected to be higher than the coupe, which starts at $189,629 and $190,000 plus on-road costs for the free-breathing LC500 and petrol-electric LC500h respectively.

NISSAN has laid claim to a new vehicle genre, the “elevated sports sedan”, with the reveal this week of the self-driving, all-electric IMs concept at the Detroit motor show.

The Japanese car-maker describes the IMs as “closer to a sedan than a crossover” and is clearly pushing the design envelope at a time when traditional sedans are fast losing favour in key markets such as North America and forcing some manufacturers to pull back from, or even abandon, the segment.

The IMs has an elevated ride height that aids ingress and egress and allows for a high seating position, stemming from 22-inch alloy wheels and the underfloor placement of a flat 115kWh battery pack that provides a driving range

of about 600km. Measuring 4845mm long,

1900mm wide and 1500mm high, with a 2900mm wheelbase, the IMs has an exterior design that is highlighted by similar horizontal and vertical lines.

Finished in ‘Liquid Metal’ paintwork, the concept’s body and glasshouse are visually separated owing to the absence of B-pillars, and despite it adopting the popular fastback silhouette, Nissan says the concept’s packaging is not compromised.

The concept’s thin pillars and gold-accented glass roof, flush side windows, handle-less doors and side-view cameras (in lieu of traditional side mirrors) contribute to a low drag coefficient, while an integrated rear spoiler can be

deployed to aid high-speed stability.Up front, Nissan’s signature

V-motion design element is used, although due to the 360kW/800Nm dual-motor electric powertrain (with all-wheel drive), it is not presented in the form of a traditional grille. Instead, the placement and shape of the headlights make it apparent.

When the IMs is on the move, its front end’s horizontal light strip

pulses into the cabin, where the ambient lighting reacts accordingly, before reaching the centre of the full-width tail-light and starting the process again. This glows light blue when the autonomous driving mode is engaged.

The cabin can be more easily accessed via the rear suicide doors, which open up to a unique seating layout. The three-seat second row

can be transformed into an oversized, reclining Premium Seat when the outboard pews are folded flat.

In the first row, the driver-centric cockpit features a floating dual-layer transparent digital instrument cluster, four infotainment displays and a zero-gravity seat for the driver.

INFINITI has previewed its bid at the premium mid-size all-electric SUV segment with the full reveal of its QX Inspiration concept at this week’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

According to Infiniti, the show car “previews the brand’s plan to launch a range of high-performance electrified vehicles which promise an engaging drive and deliver range confidence”.

A design study for now, the QX Inspiration has boxy proportions and a jacked-up ride height befitting its SUV designation.

Up front, ultra-slim headlights flank a prominent brand logo, while the grille is devoid of any air intakes, alluding to the QX Inspiration’s

emissions-free powertrain.In profile, Infiniti’s latest concept

features handle-less doors and what appears to be slender cameras in lieu of traditional wing mirrors.

Being an SUV, the wheelarches are also clad in black plastic and filled with large-diameter wheels.

The clean and simple body lines continue in the rear with slender tail-lights and a roof-mounted rear spoiler.

Stepping into the QX Inspiration via the suicide doors reveals a handcrafted interior decked out

with “choice materials inspired by a subtle Japanese sensuality”, according to Infiniti.

Front occupants are treated to numerous displays dotted along the dashboard, while the steering wheel is also rectangular.

Details on the all-electric powertrain are still to be revealed, but the QX Inspiration is part of Infiniti’s plan to launch each of its new models from 2021 with an electrified powertrain.

Electrified technology could be drawn from parent company Nissan or borrowed from fellow alliance members Renault and Mitsubishi. Either way, the production version of the QX Inspiration would line up against the likes of Audi’s e-tron and the Mercedes-Benz EQC.

As such, the road-going Infiniti QX Inspiration will have to contend with the e-tron’s up to 300kW/664Nm output and circa-400km driving range, and the

EQC’s 300kW/765Nm powertrain and 450km range.

Infiniti president Christian Meunier said the brand’s first all-electric model will draw inspiration from the QX Inspiration concept.

“The QX Inspiration marks the beginning of a new generation of Infiniti cars and establishes a direct blueprint for the brand’s first electric vehicle,” he said.

SUBARU has revealed a heavily modified version of its WRX STI sedan at the Detroit motor show, with the high-performance S209 grade set for a limited production run of around 200 units.

At this stage, Subaru Tecnica International’s “most powerful model ever” will only be available to United States customers, however it will go through final assembly at its homeland in Kiryu, Japan.

While the S209 still uses the

venerable EJ25 2.5-litre horizontally opposed turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, STI engineers have heavily reworked the unit to produce 254kW of power, up from 221kW in the standard car.

To achieve this, Subaru has employed a new HKS-built turbocharger which lifts maximum boost pressure from 16.2psi to 18.0psi. It is supported by forged pistons and connecting rods, a high-flow intake system, larger fuel injectors and a high-flow exhaust with 101mm tips.

Subaru says that mid-range torque has also been lifted, up 10 per cent at 3600rpm, but has not provided an exact output figure.

More grunt demands more braking power, and Subaru has delivered with cross-drilled steel Brembo brakes with six-piston

monobloc callipers up front, two-piston monobloc grabbers at the rear and upgraded high-friction pads to minimise brake fade.

Translating the power to the ground is a bespoke close-ratio six-speed manual transmission that routes power to Subaru’s famous symmetrical all-wheel-drive system with front and rear limited-slip differentials.

The driveline is backed up by a Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD), active torque vectoring and three revamped

driving modes: Intelligent, Sport and Sport Sharp.

Handling has also been a big focus in developing the S209, with new Bilstein dampers on each corner, as well as stiffened coil springs, a 20mm rear anti-roll bar and new bushings for the front and rear lateral links.

The S209 also benefits from front crossmember and rear subframe reinforcements and a flexible front strut bar, along with front, rear and side under-spoilers, front bumper

canards and a carbon-fibre roof panel and rear wing.

To accommodate a wider track with large 19x9.0-inch forged BBS alloy wheels on each corner, the S209 sports a wide-body kit that extends the vehicle’s width by 1.7 inches (43mm) compared to the standard STI.

The bespoke hoops are shod in 265/35-section Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT600A tyres, which were specifically developed for the vehicle.

FORD Australia has ruled out the 522kW-plus Mustang GT500 due to its lack of right-hand-drive production, with the third-generation Shelby sportscar making its debut this week at the Detroit motor show.

Touted as the “most powerful street-legal Ford in history”, the Shelby GT500 is planned to remain a left-hand-drive model, although Ford Australia product communications manager Damion Smy said the company “will continue to explore opportunities for Australian customers”.

Drawing motivation from a hand-built 5.2-litre V8 engine that is hooked up to a 2.65-litre Roots-type supercharger nestled between its cylinder banks alongside an air-

to-liquid intercooler, the GT500 produces more than 522kW of power.

Manual transmission enthusiasts should look away as the GT500 is exclusively mated to a Tremec-sourced seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that sends drive to the rear wheels via a carbon-fibre driveshaft while shifting gears in less than 100 milliseconds.

As a result, the Blue Oval claims the GT500 can dash from standstill to 60mph (97km/h) in 3.5 seconds while on the way to knocking down the quarter-mile (402m) sprint in less than 11 seconds – the best performance figures yet for a Mustang – thanks to launch control.

FORD has revealed the sixth-generation Explorer large SUV that will target high-volume left-hand-drive markets, particularly the United States, with Australia set to miss out yet again due to right-hand-drive production not being planned.

The Blue Oval’s local arm will instead focus on its existing SUV line-up that recently expanded with the addition of the large-size Endura, which is known as Edge overseas.

The five-seat, diesel-only Endura is at odds with most of its sub-$70,000 rivals that instead feature seven seats and petrol engines, while it is viewed in some circles as the spiritual successor to the locally built Territory that ended production in October 2016.

Explorer, meanwhile, is new from the ground up and exclusively offered as a seven-seater with petrol engines, making it more closely aligned with market expectations.

Based on the same rear/AWD platform as the recently unveiled Lincoln Aviator, the new Explorer is available with a pair of EcoBoost turbocharged units, including a 224kW/420Nm 2.3-litre four-cylinder and a 272kW/515Nm 3.0-litre V6, both paired to a 10-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

Hybrid and performance-focused ST variants are also confirmed, with fresh details forthcoming from the Detroit show this week.

CADILLAC has used the Detroit motor show this week to reveal its all-new XT6 large crossover, which will join the XT4, XT5 and Escalade in the GM luxury brand’s North American SUV stable in the 2020 model year.

GM Holden has refused to write off the XT6 for the Australian market, but, as it has made little headway in relaunching the American brand Down Under, the new seven-seat SUV – overseen by global Cadillac design chief, expat Australian Andrew Smith – is unlikely to be offered here.

Cadillac was set to be reintroduced to Australia in 2009, however Holden was forced to shelve the plan indefinitely in the midst of the global financial crisis that saw parent company General Motors file for chapter 11 bankruptcy.

In keeping with tradition, Cadillac’s latest is big on interior technology and premium materials, though power comes from GM’s familiar 3.6-litre V6 engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission offering up to four selectable driving modes.

In this case, the V6 is tuned to produce 231kW of power at 6600rpm and 373Nm of torque at 5000rpm, which is sent to the front wheels in the entry-level Premium Luxury variant and to all four corners in the higher-spec Premium Luxury AWD and range-topping Sport.

Inside, the XT6 is finished in wood trim or carbon-fibre in the Sport, and features a 14-speaker Bose audio system, semi-aniline leather-appointed seats, an air ioniser, heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

BMW Group Australia has added significant value to its 3 Series, with the seventh-generation mid-size sedan’s launch line-up to enter showrooms in March with more technology for modest or no extra cost.

The diesel 320d opens the initial range from $67,900 plus on-road costs – a $2100 price rise – while the petrol 330i still costs $70,900, despite its generational shift.

Comparatively, Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class sedan checks in at $64,900 and $71,400 in its equivalent C220d and C300 guise respectively.

As reported, the performance-focused M340i xDrive has been confirmed to join the line-up later this year, while the plug-in hybrid

330e and other variants – including the entry-level 320i – are also expected to be added to the range.

Standard equipment in the 320i includes adaptive LED headlights, LED foglights and tail-lights, 18-

inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch touchscreen powered by BMW’s Operating System 7.0 infotainment unit with

always-on voice control, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay support, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a windshield-projected head-up display, wireless smartphone charging, power-adjustable front sports seats, and Alcantara and Sensatec artificial leather upholstery.

Advanced driver-assist systems extend to autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warning,

blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, high-beam assist, speed limit recognition and park assist.

The 330i adds 19-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry/start with smartphone support, Vernasca leather upholstery, lane-keep and steering assist, front cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, surround-view cameras and tyre pressure monitoring.

Notably, the M Sport package

is now standard on the 320d and 330i, featuring sports suspension (10mm-lower ride height), a sports bodykit (bumpers and side skirts), high-gloss Shadow Line exterior trim, an M Sport steering wheel and anthracite roofliner and Aluminium Tetragon interior finishers.

The 330i also gains adaptive dampers and M Sport brake discs with blue four-piston front and

floating single-piston rear callipers.Alternatively, buyers can opt for

the no-cost Luxury Line package, which instead includes a sports steering wheel, Sensatec artificial leather-trimmed dashboard and high-gloss Ash Grey wood interior finishers, while the 320d also gains Vernasca leather upholstery.

PORSCHE Cars Australia (PCA) has confirmed pricing for the 992-series 911 Cabriolet revealed last week in Carrera S and Carrera 4S form ahead of a showroom arrival in the second quarter.

Priced from $286,500 and $302,600 plus on-road costs for the rear-wheel-drive Carrera S and all-wheel-drive Carrera 4S respectively, the new 911 Cabriolet is $3450 dearer than its predecessor.

Compared to the 992-series 911 Coupe that made its international debut at the Los Angeles motor show in November last year, the soft-top costs $21,500 more – the same premium it commanded before.

New hydraulics feature on the cabrio for the power-operated fabric roof with integrated glass rear window, which allow it to be opened in about 12 seconds when

travelling at speeds up to 50km/h.

The roof structure also contains

magnesium bows, which Porsche claims “reliably prevent” the fabric from ballooning at high speeds, while a power-operated wind deflector shields occupants from air turbulence.

Just like its eighth-generation 911 Coupe sibling, the drop-top is motivated by a revised 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged flat six-cylinder petrol engine that now produces 331kW of power at 6500rpm and 530Nm of torque from 2300-5000rpm, up

22kW/30Nm, although Porsche says other variants are planned.

Mated to an eight-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission, the 911 Cabriolet can sprint from standstill to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds in Carrera S guise, while the Carrera 4S reaches triple digits 0.1s earlier.

The optional Sports Chrono package shaves 0.2s from either time, while the Carrera S has a top speed of 306km/h – 2km/h faster

than the Carrera 4S can manage.Aside from the engine’s improved

fuel injection, tweaked turbocharger layout and revised charge air cooling system, its new mounting position has increased the 911 Cabriolet’s torsional rigidity.

The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports chassis is available as an option for the first time on the 911 Cabriolet, adding harder and shorter springs that reduce ride height by 10mm, plus stiffer anti-roll bars that make for more neutral road feel and better weight distribution.

As seen with the new coupe, rear- and all-wheel-drive 911 cabrios now feature the same wide-body look that is complemented by 20-

and 21-inch alloy wheels at the front and rear respectively.

Available equipment includes Wet Road driving mode, a 10.9-inch touchscreen PCM infotainment system, two multi-function displays, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, a reversing camera and night vision with thermal imaging.

Sales of the 911 significantly improved last year, with 511 examples sold – an 18.6 per cent increase over the 431 deliveries made during 2017.

PORSCHE Cars Australia (PCA) has confirmed its facelifted Macan S mid-size SUV will enter showrooms in the first quarter of this year with a new turbocharged V6 engine alongside an increase in pricing and standard equipment.

Priced from $97,500 plus on-road costs, the refreshed Macan S commands a $2000 premium over its predecessor and is $16,100 dearer than the updated entry-level Macan that had its pricing announced in October.

The Macan S’s newly developed 3.0-litre petrol engine drops its forebear’s twin turbos in favour of a single twin-scroll unit located in the inner vee of the cylinder bank.

According to the German

sportscar brand, this layout creates shorter exhaust gas paths between the upgraded combustion chambers and the turbocharger, which result in “outstanding and immediate responsiveness”.

As a result, the Macan S now develops 260kW of power from 5400 to 6400rpm and 480Nm

of torque from 1360 to 4800rpm – an increase of 10kW and 20Nm.

Porsche claims the Macan S sprints from standstill to 100km/h in

5.3 seconds – or 5.1s with the Sport Package optioned – while on the way to its top speed of 254km/h. These figures represent improvements of 0.1s and 3km/h respectively.

Claimed fuel consumption on the combined-cycle test has improved to 8.9 litres per 100km (-0.1L/100km), while carbon dioxide emissions have also been reduced to 204 grams per kilometre (-8g/km).

PORSCHE has broadened the rollout of its stripped-out, lightweight T variant from its 911 Coupe range to the 718 Boxster and Cayman, but an Australian debut for the coupe and convertible pair remains up in the air.

According to Porsche Cars Australia (PCA), the company is currently evaluating the 718 T, with no confirmation or timing for a local arrival at this stage.

Typically, PCA encourages all new Porsche models and variants to be brought Down Under, and introduced the Carrera T to the local range in 2017.

The ‘T’ stands for ‘Touring’ in

Porsche language, and is used for variants that increase driving purity through lighter weight and sharper responsiveness.

The 718 T is based on the specification of the entry-level 2.0-litre Boxster and Cayman, but adjusts a number of features to create what the car-maker describes as “a particularly emotional Porsche driving experience”.

LAMBORGHINI has levelled up its Huracan supercar with a mid-lifecycle facelift that ushers in a new Evo moniker, rear-wheel steering and the same 470kW/600Nm 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 petrol engine as the Nurburgring-conquering Performante.

Rechristened Huracan Evo, the new entry-level Lamborghini model now boasts an additional 21kW/40Nm, with peak power available from 8000rpm and maximum torque on tap at 6500rpm from the mid-mounted engine.

Sending drive to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the 1422kg Huracan Evo can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in just 2.9 seconds, 0-200km/h in 9.0s and on to a top speed of more than 325km/h.

For comparison, the outgoing Huracan that was introduced in 2013 needed 3.2s and 9.9s to hit 100km/h and 200km/h respectively from a standing start.

Externally, the Evo is fitted with a revised front bumper, updated wheel designs, new side intakes, bumper-integrated dual exhaust outlets and body-coloured rear diffuser.

Inside, occupants are treated to a new 8.4-inch HMI touchscreen infotainment system with multi-finger gesture controls, Apple CarPlay, satellite navigation, voice commands and an optional dual-camera telemetry system.

Sports seats and a cabin fitted with a mix of Alcantara and leather carry over, while options for body-coloured highlights and carbon-finished touches are also available.

A new orange exterior colour is

available, dubbed Arancio Xanto.Like the S version did for

its Aventador sibling, the Evo introduces rear-wheel steering to the Huracan nameplate, which works in conjunction with the Lamborghini Dynamic Steering (LDS) and torque vectoring systems for better stability at high speeds and improved manoeuvrability at low speeds.

The Huracan Evo is also fitted

with a Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Integrata (LDVI), which monitors and controls the supercar’s dynamic behaviour on the fly.

In addition, the Lamborghini Piattaforma Inerziale (LPI) system, which uses a set of accelerators and gyroscopes positioned at the car’s centre of gravity, has also been upgraded, improving the vehicle’s reaction time when adjusting the

magneto rheological suspension, traction control and torque vectoring settings.

As before, the Huracan Evo features three driving modes – Strada, Sport and Corsa – that can be switched via the Anima controller, progressively dialling up throttle, transmission, suspension and steering settings.

AUDI has detailed the facelifted versions of its third-generation TT S Coupe and Roadster, which could enter Australian showrooms in the second quarter as quicker alternatives to the base sportscar.

The TT S is still motivated by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, but its maximum torque has been boosted to 400Nm from 2000 to 5300rpm for the 225kW European-market model.

However, Australia is unlikely to receive this engine tune due its ‘hot weather’ designation from the German prestige brand’s parent

company, Volkswagen Group. For reference, the pre-facelift

Australian-market TT S develops 210kW at 6200rpm and 380Nm from 1800-5200rpm, while the entry-level TT produces 169kW/370Nm.

Nonetheless, straight-line performance will be aided by a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which has closer ratios for its lower gears than its predecessor’s six-speed unit, while the wide ratio of its highest gear improves fuel economy.

With its engine and transmission upgrades, the European-market TT S has shaved a tenth of a second off its sprint from standstill to 100km/h, at 4.5 seconds in coupe form and 4.8s in roadster guise. A similar improvement is expected for Australian models.

MERCEDES-BENZ Australia/Pacific has released pricing for its entry-level A180 hatch and two new A250 variants, all of which are set to touch down in Australian showrooms early this year.

The A180 is now the most affordable model in the A-Class line-up at $42,300 plus on-road costs, but is still upstream of comparable rivals such as the Audi A3 1.0 TFSI ($36,200) and BMW 118i ($39,990). The new A180 is

also $3600 dearer than the model it replaces.

Also joining the new-generation A-Class line-up are two variants with the 2.0-litre A250 engine, which will be offered in front- and all-wheel-drive layout, costing $48,800 and $54,800 respectively.

The range now consists of five variants, including the A200 and A250 Limited Edition, the latter arriving in Australia last month as a stopgap offering before the arrival of the regular A250.

Additionally, the range will be bolstered by the arrival of

the A-Class sedan in the second quarter and performance-oriented A35 and A45 AMG versions later this year.

The A180 uses the same new 1.3-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine as the A200, but has been detuned by 20kW/50Nm to produce 100kW/200Nm.

It drives the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, can complete the 0-100km/h sprint in 8.8 seconds and consumes 5.7 litres of fuel per

100km on the official combined test cycle.

The new MBUX infotainment screen with the latest voice recognition technology is projected onto a 10.25-inch touchscreen that sits next to another 10.25-inch screen housing the digital instrument cluster.

Other standard specification for the A180 includes satellite navigation, DAB+ digital radio, keyless start, reversing camera, LED headlights, sports seats in

Artico upholstery and a suite of active safety features including active lane-keep assist, active parking assist, blind-spot monitor with exit warning, autonomous emergency braking and traffic sign recognition.

The A180 comes standard with the Style equipment line that includes 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and a diamond radiator grille.

PRICING for Kia’s fourth-generation Cerato small hatch was revealed just prior to Christmas, with the new four-variant range – to be launched later this week – sharing the same driveaway pricing as its sedan twin that arrived last June.

The range will kick off from $19,990 driveaway for the entry-level S with a six-speed manual, and will top out at $26,190 for the Sport+.

The sportier, turbocharged GT variant also joins the Cerato range in both hatch and sedan format this month.

Opting for the six-speed automatic on the S increases the asking price by $1500 to $21,490 driveaway, while the mid-spec

Sport comes in at $23,690.All versions bar the incoming GT

share the same carryover 2.0-litre normally aspirated petrol engine producing 112kW/192Nm and sending drive to the front wheels.

The GT will instead use a 150kW/265Nm 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine shared with the likes of the Hyundai Veloster and i30

SR, which should be mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Autonomous emergency braking (AEB), forward collision warning and lane-keep assist are standard across the range, while other safety equipment can be optioned.

Standard kit on the entry-level S grade includes 16-inch steel wheels, six airbags, a reversing camera with

guidelines, front and rear parking sensors, a tyre pressure monitor, cruise control, speed limiter and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay, Android Auto and DAB+ digital radio.

Moving up to the mid-spec Sport adds 17-inch alloys, satellite navigation with live traffic updates, premium steering wheel and gear shifter, and sports seats.

Both the S and Sport are available

with one of two safety packs for $1000, which add adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitor, pedestrian and cyclist detection for AEB, auto-folding side mirrors and a leather-clad steering wheel on the S.

The top-spec Sport+ takes the specification of the Sport and adds all of the features from the safety pack (bar blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert), LED daytime running lights, proximity key and push-button start, leather seats, climate control and rear air vents.

Adding the two missing safety features to the Sport+ can be done for an additional $500.

HONDA Australia has introduced a second seven-seat variant to its CR-V mid-size SUV range dubbed the VTi-E, bringing the price of entry to its three-row crossover down to $34,490 plus on-road costs.

Previously, CR-V customers opting for a third row were limited to the high-spec VTi-L priced at $38,990, however the new VTi-E undercuts that figure by $4500.

In turn, the VTi-E misses out on a number of features including a panoramic sunroof, power tailgate, front and rear parking sensors, Honda’s Lane Watch camera, satellite navigation, driver’s seat memory and heated front seats.

As standard, though, the new CR-V variant is fitted with 18-inch alloys, a reversing camera, an eight-way power driver’s seat,

leather-appointed pews, a 7.0-inch infotainment display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, rear USB ports and air-conditioning vents for all three rows.

Power comes from the 140kW/240Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which is shared by the rest of the range except for the base-model Vi that gets by with a 113kW/189Nm 2.0-litre naturally aspirated unit.

HONDA used the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last week to demonstrate a prototype of its forthcoming Dream Drive infotainment system, which will fully integrate mobile services into vehicles.

The Japanese car-maker claims Dream Drive is the automotive industry’s first system to combine driver and passenger infotainment with commerce, services and rewards within the vehicle environment.

First shown as a concept at CES 2017, Dream Drive has been upgraded with a wider range of functionality for drivers and passengers, thanks to Honda’s development collaboration with ConnectedTravel, a cloud- and

location-based services application platform specialist.

Dream Drive is split into two specifically tailored streams – Driver and Passenger – to reduce driver distraction when commuting.

Driver allows occupants to complete in-vehicle payments for goods and services, order food for pick-up or delivery, make restaurant reservations and share the vehicle’s location with friends and family via the central touchscreen that supports voice control.

Meanwhile, Passenger enables occupants to listen to music, watch

movies, play ‘mixed-reality’ games, read comics, explore routed-based points of interest and control cabin features via the Dream Drive smartphone application installed on their personal device.

All of this additional content, which is predominately provided by third parties, can be purchased via the Dream Drive infotainment system and smartphone application.

According to Honda Innovations managing director of strategic partnerships John Moon, these third-party collaborators are keen to see how connected vehicles will improve the visibility of their businesses.

“Honda has teamed up with industry leaders who want to understand how to best provide in-vehicle services to our customers,” he said.

AUDI revealed its vision for the future of in-car entertainment at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last week, demonstrating regular wearable virtual reality (VR) glasses that respond to vehicle movements in real time.

Through one of its subsidiaries, Audi Electronics Venture, the German prestige brand co-founded the start-up Holoride – handing it the licence to the technology – and the plan is to now commercialise its vehicle data-driven software development kit via an open platform within the next three years.

As a result, the technology will be available to rival car-makers and other content developers in the future, enabling them to create additional extended VR formats.

This unusual move forms part of Audi’s overall strategy to establish this new category of in-car entertainment as quickly and comprehensively as possible, according to Audi head of digital business and future Holoride chief executive Nils Wollny.

“Creative minds will use our platform to come up with fascinating worlds that turn the journey from A to B into a real adventure,” he said.

“We can only develop this new entertainment segment by adopting a co-operative, open approach for vehicle, device and content producers.”

One such long-term development that could take place is the technology’s integration with V2X (vehicle to everything) communications, which would see it also react to traffic events

encountered along the driving route. However, in the present day, the

technology is more limited in its functionality, with Audi partnering with Disney Games and Interactive Experiences to a develop a VR game, Marvel’s Avengers: Rocket’s

Rescue Run.Using an all-electric e-tron

SUV as a test car, second-row passengers are transported into outer space, where they are aboard the ship manned by Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, including

Rocket, as it navigates an asteroid field.

If the e-tron turns around a tight corner, the player will correspondingly curve around an opposing spaceship, while real-world acceleration results in increased momentum in the game.

Crucially, since the user’s visual experience and actual perception are aligned, Audi claims other VR content, such as movies or TV series, can be viewed with a significantly reduced chance of motion sickness.

HYUNDAI Motor Group has teamed up with Swiss deep-tech start-up WayRay AG to debut a holographic augmented reality (AR) navigation system that can overlay travel information and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) onto the road.

Fitted to a Genesis G80 at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the concept AR system is designed to keep the driver’s attention on the road by displaying all necessary information in his or her field of view instead of burying

it in a dashboard display. An evolution of the traditional

head-up display system, the holographic AR navigation system can be used to project information such as turn-by-turn instructions, the speed limit and forward collision warnings in real time.

The projected image measures

1310mm tall and 3152mm wide and can be superimposed onto roads up to 15 metres ahead, while the display can also be adjusted to suit different viewing angles that cater towards the varying height and seating position of drivers.

Though just in concept form for now, both Hyundai and WayRay say they “will continue to work closely together to expand holographic AR technology to display people, objects, buses, bicycle lanes and crosswalks”.

JAGUAR Land Rover (JLR) has confirmed that about 4500 people will be cut from its global workforce – part of a “major transformation plan to lay foundations for long-term sustainable profitable growth” – as the deadline for the UK’s exit from the European Union looms.

However, the effects are yet to be felt in Australia as a local JLR spokesperson told GoAuto: “We are assessing the impact this plan may have in Australia.

“No further comment at this stage.”The UK’s largest automotive

manufacturer has dubbed the plan ‘Charge and Accelerate’ and aims to “deliver £2.5 billion ($A4.43 billion) in cost reductions and cashflow improvements over 18 months as well as long-term strategic operating efficiencies”.

A key part of its cost-cutting measures is a reduction of its

43,000-strong global workforce, starting with a voluntary redundancy program in the UK. Last year also saw 1500 jobs shed from JLR.

A softening Chinese market, as well as plummeting diesel sales, are believed to be contributing to JLR’s bottom-line tightening as parent company Tata Motors reported a quarterly loss (July to September) of $US142 million ($A197.32m).

In Australia, Jaguar sales last year jumped 7.9 per cent to 2679 vehicles, compared to 2017, while Land Rover’s volume dipped 23.1 per cent, to 10,089 units.

Meanwhile, the second part of JLR’s plan will focus on investments in future technologies, such as the next-generation electric drive units and further development of its Battery Assembly Centre in North Warwickshire in England.

THERE were more losers than winners in Australia’s softening new-vehicle market last year, but the signs were positive for several brands that will look to continue their momentum in 2019, which is expected to be just as challenging.

As reported, several factors aside from individual supply issues, such as the declining housing market, bank credit squeeze, severe drought, weak dollar, stunted wage growth and upcoming federal election, contributed to the new-vehicle market’s contraction by 3.0 per cent last year, to 1,153,111 vehicles.

However, among the high-volume mainstream brands, Honda bucked this trend with its sales up 10.1 per cent, to 51,525 vehicles, thanks largely to the fifth-generation CR-V mid-size SUV’s first full year on the market, which saw its volume grow by 69.5 per cent, to 16,107 units.

As a result, Honda broke back into the list of top 10 brands, pushing Subaru out to 11th.

Kia’s record-breaking performance was also strong, finishing with 58,815 vehicles sold

– a 7.5 per cent lift brought upon by its dominant Picanto micro car (5394 units, +62.3%) and emerging Stinger large car (1957, +288.3%), and healthy returns from other higher-volume models.

The Korean brand finished seventh overall, up from ninth last year and, this time around, just 1939 units shy of Holden in sixth.

Despite persisting with a two-model line-up, Isuzu Ute (27,640 units, +7.1%) notched up its 11th consecutive annual sales record since its inception in 2008 but fell just short of a 10th year of double-digit growth.

Mitsubishi also posted an all-time record, pushing past the 81,651 units it recorded in 1998 at the height of its position as an Australian manufacturer with 84,944 new registrations last year.

This was up 5.3 per cent on 2017 and due largely to incremental sales (7521 units) from its Eclipse Cross small SUV’s first calendar year in showrooms.

As a result, the triple-diamond brand moved up to fourth in the marketplace, leapfrogging Holden

which struggled in its first full year as a full-line importer, its sales plummeting 32.7 per cent, to just 60,751 vehicles.

Most of the bleeding came from the Commodore large car (9040 units, -61.8%) that struggled in its

transition from homegrown VFII to German-built ZB.

With an extra year after its final factory closure under its belt, Ford fared better, although its volume still fell by 11.6 per cent, to 69,081 vehicles, due to the sportscar bubble

bursting on its Mustang (6412 units, -30.0%) and the long wait until its Focus small car’s (3875, -34.9%) generational change, which took place last month.

NISSAN has unveiled an upgraded version of its new-generation Leaf electric vehicle, dubbed e+, which features a new powertrain for a higher output and increased driving range.

The improved Leaf will hit Japan in late January, the United States during its spring and Europe in mid-2019, but Nissan Australia has yet to lock in the vehicle for this market.

According to Nissan Australia corporate communications manager Tony Mee, the company has yet to be offered the e+ but is interested in importing the vehicle.

“Our immediate focus is on

launching the all-new second-generation Leaf to the Australian market when it arrives mid-year,” he said.

“The Nissan Leaf e+ is currently available in Japan and has not been offered to us. However, it is a vehicle we are interested in.”

Due to higher-than-expected demand and supply issues, the standard second-generation Leaf was delayed for Australia and is now earmarked for a mid-year launch.

Meanwhile, the e+ features a new high-capacity battery and a more powerful electric motor than the standard Leaf and promises a lift in

driving range from 322km to about 458km.

Power and torque has increased to 160kW and 340Nm respectively, with Nissan claiming that accelerating from 80km/h to 120km/h is 13 per cent quicker than the standard Leaf, while top speed is higher by about 10 per cent.

Nissan has not divulged full charging time details, but the car-maker indicated that the e+ will be able to charge to 80 per cent in one hour when connected to a 100kW power outlet.

“Nissan Leaf e+ owners can expect similar charging times when hooked up to a 100kW charger as current Nissan Leaf owners do with a 50kW charger, despite a 55 per cent larger battery storage capacity,” the company said.

On the outside, styling and dimensions remain largely unchanged, albeit with a 5mm increase in overall height when riding on 16-inch wheels, a revised front fascia with blue highlights and unique badging.

“The settlements do not change the company’s position that it did not engage in any deliberate scheme to install defeat devices to cheat emissions tests,” FCA said in a statement last week.

“Further, the consent decree and settlement agreements contain no finding or admission with regard to any alleged violations of vehicle emissions rules.”

The estimated total cost of the settlements is $US800 million ($A1.11 billion), with about $US400 million ($A554m) allocated to civil penalties.

JOHN Oxley Volkswagen dealer principal John McGuigan was recently awarded an international ‘diamond pin’ for outstanding service to the brand.

Mr McGuigan, who became the world’s youngest Volkswagen dealer in 1971 at age 19, continues to lead the Port Macquarie dealership on the New South Wales mid-north coast, with son Shane serving as general manager and responsible for other brands in the eight-franchise John Oxley Motors Group stable.

The diamond pin is presented annually to select Volkswagen dealers across the globe who continuously display operational excellence in areas such as sales, servicing, customer satisfaction and parts sales over many years.

Mr McGuigan received the award in Germany last month at Volkswagen AG’s international dealers’ Commendation Day, becoming only the second Australian to receive the honour.

In 2017, Waverley Volkswagen dealer principal Dino Di Benedetto from Melbourne became the first Australian dealer to receive the award.

VW says that to be eligible, a dealer must have “prolonged and outstanding service with the Volkswagen brand” and also

be included among the company’s annual premium dealers – the top 10 of the brand’s 105 Australian retailers.

As GoAuto has reported, John Oxley Volkswagen was last year named 2017 Rural

Dealer of the Year. There are more than 10,000

dealerships (or “touchpoints”) for the Volkswagen brand worldwide, and GoAuto understands that 53 pins were awarded last year.

Volkswagen Group Australia general manager of network development David Stone said that after five decades, Mr McGuigan remained “one the nation’s foremost dealers of any brand”.

“In 2013, John completed one of the first ‘module concept’ showrooms in Australia,” Mr Stone said. “He’s also earned many Volkswagen awards, including the ‘gold pin’ in 2012 and the title of 2017 Volkswagen Rural Dealer of the Year.”

INCHCAPE Australia Limited has paid tribute to property services manager Kevin Riddle – “a legend” at the company (and its predecessors) who retired on January 2 after exactly 60 years of service.

Mr Riddle entered the automotive industry on January 2, 1959, joining Larke Consolidated Industries as a 15-year-old apprentice motor mechanic at its garage on Parramatta Road in Stanmore, in Sydney’s inner west.

He initially worked on Fiats – and was part of the pit team for Fiat’s Bathurst campaign during the 1960s – and soon rose through the ranks to become road tester, foreman, assistant manager and then manager.

During this period, ‘Larkes’ transitioned ownership to LNC, JGL, TKM and ultimately

Inchcape, and Mr Riddle’s hand turned increasingly to models from Subaru, for which Inchcape is the official distributor in Australia.

His responsibilities also included management of all Wetherill Park facilities, when the compound in the outer western suburbs of Sydney was opened in 1979.

He returned to LNC’s head office at Ryde in 1981, serving as administrative services officer and, later, warranty manager, before the full operation moved to Wetherill Park and Mr Riddle assumed the role of property services manager.

“I never envisioned spending so much time with the same company, but I’ve had different roles and the company ownership changed a few times, so there’s always been variety and plenty of challenges,” he said.

Mr Riddle has seen a vast amount of changes in the industry, particularly in vehicle engineering and technical development, from the Leone and Brumby in the 1970s to the current crop of Subaru models.

“When you look at Subarus now, everything from the paint to the trim, computer technology and reliability are vastly superior,” he said.

“When I started, radios were one of the major car accessories. Now, fantastic systems like EyeSight are becoming the norm.”

BRABHAM Automotive has confirmed its upcoming Australian-built BT62 supercar will be available in road-going guise courtesy of a new Road Compliance Conversion option.

Otherwise a track-only prospect, the BT62 will go through a conversion process by Brabham Automotive before registration at the expense of the buyer.

While local pricing for the conversion has yet to be revealed, the option will cost £150,000 ($A268,000) in European markets on top of the price of the car.

For reference, the BT62 costs $1.8 million in local money.

According to Brabham

Automotive commercial director Dan Marks, the timing of the road-compliant conversion is “up to the customer”.

“Customers have the flexibility of completing the Brabham Driver Development Programme before converting their BT62 or requesting that their BT62 be delivered as a road-compliant version,” he said.

“Given these cars are limited editions, tailored to the needs of

each owner, we are keen to provide this flexibility to our customers where we can.”

To become road legal, the vehicle will need to undergo a series of changes including raising the ride height with a front and rear axle lift kit, increasing the steering lock range, adding air-conditioning, fitting door locks and immobilisers, and including additional upholstery in the cabin.

The conversion will not affect the BT62’s 552kW/667Nm output and – according to an official statement from Brabham Automotive – has been developed to incur “minimal

compromise to its race-bred circuit dynamics”.

European deliveries of road-ready BT62s are expected to start mid-year.

Brabham Automotive managing director David Brabham reinforced the fact that the BT62 was not designed as a road car, but acknowledged that customers wanted to have the option.

“We designed the BT62 to be an unrestricted, thoroughbred track car and our extensive test program has revealed it to be all of those things. This isn’t a car designed for the road,” he said.

“With that said, it’s clear some

customers are keen to have a road-compliant option with their BT62, particularly to drive to and from the track. My father Jack was always customer focused and we will continue with that ethos.”

As previously reported, the hi-po Brabham is powered by a 5.4-litre naturally aspirated V8, and weighs just 972kg thanks in part to lightweight carbon-fibre components.

At the reveal of the BT62 in May last year, Brabham confirmed that the car will be limited to just 70 units in honour of the seven decades since Sir Jack Brabham began his motorsport career.

AUSTRALIANS like a gamble but even the most hard-nosed punter must be getting nervous with the risk the nation is taking with our basic supply of transport fuels.

The fact is that Australia is in a critical state of having a mere 17 days of diesel fuel in stockpile.

This is in breach of an international energy treaty and places the nation in a parlous position if shipping is interrupted by conflict in the increasingly tense South-East Asia – especially the South China Sea.

In an alarming report by the federal department of environment and energy, Australia has its lowest fuel stocks on record with only 17 days of diesel and 22 days of petrol on tap.

But Australia is required to hold 90 days’ worth of oil stocks under a treaty signed with the International Energy Agency’s energy program. It demands signatories be able to contribute

in the event of a global oil supply disruption.

Yet Australia is the only country that does not meet the IEA standard.

This week the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) said Australia has not met the IEA’s regulation since March 2012. It is now demanding the federal government return the nation to compliance.

MUA national secretary Paddy Crumlin said: “No one has been at the wheel of energy security in Canberra for a very long time.”

The MUA produced a report Australia’s Fuel Security – Running on Empty in December last year. It was written by shipping expert John Francis who said Australia now relies on the equivalent of almost 60 full-time fuel import tankers to keep the nation supplied with petrol, diesel and jet fuel, mainly from Korea, Singapore and Japan.

“The report found Australia’s reliance on foreign-flagged tankers removes any opportunity for the Commonwealth to be able to requisition national flag tankers if necessary to secure minimum import or coastal distribution requirements following major economic or geopolitical disruptions,” Mr Crumlin said.

“The cost of addressing this risk is comparatively low: even carrying Australia’s entire import volume on a fleet of Australian tankers would cost less than one extra cent per litre.”

Meanwhile, the department of environment and energy (DEE) said that in the past 10 years, three of Australia’s refineries have closed and production of liquid fuels has declined by one third.

To rectify the dramatic reduction in fuel stocks, the federal government has now announced it will buy fuel supplies at a cost of about $225 million and hold these offshore.

This solves the immediate problem of boosting Australia’s fuel reserves but the stocks remain outside of Australia’s shores.

The DEE said it has “begun

implementing the government’s two-phase plan to return to compliance” with the first phase involving buying “oil tickets” up to 400 kilotons – equivalent to about three million barrels of crude oil and five days of Australian consumption – worth about $A225 million at the current oil price of about $A75 a barrel. It will repeat the exercise in the next financial year.

“Oil tickets are a type of oil reservation contract, where Australia pays a third party to reserve an amount of oil in return for a monthly fee,” DEE said.

“These tickets will enable us to meet our treaty commitment to help ease market disruption in a global oil emergency.

“If requested to contribute to a collective action in the event of an IEA-declared global oil emergency, Australia would be able to help ease the oil market disruption by either purchasing the reserved oil for use in Australia or releasing it to the market.”

In an article in The Australian newspaper, the director of the Centre for Energy and Natural Resources Law at Deakin

University, Professor Samantha Hepburn, said the “whole point is to ensure (fuel) availability in the event of a crisis’’ and that it was dangerous for Australia to remain so far under the IEA-mandated days of supply.

“The security of Australia’s petroleum supply chains requires urgent assessment,” Ms Hepburn was quoted as saying.

“Australia is the only developed oil-importing country in the world that has no government-controlled stocks of crude oil or refined petroleum products.”

A review of the fuel situation was expected to be completed this year and would lead to Australia being “likely” to comply with IEA standards by 2026 – seven years away – according to a spokesman for energy minister Angus Taylor.

Mr Cummins said the solution was for the Australian government to support, as a matter of urgency, a number of Australian tankers as part of a national strategic fleet to ensure that some level of supplies can be maintained in the event of a crisis.

The MUA report said there are now no Australian-crewed tankers supplying fuel here.

“This is down from 12 in the

year 2000. At the same time, the number of refineries has halved to four,” Mr Cummins said.

“This means we now import more than 90 per cent of our fuel and that number is rising.

“Australians would expect our government to have a better plan and this would involve more refining here and Australian-crewed ships to carry it around the coast.

“This isn’t only a matter of fuel security but also national security. Unlike Australian seafarers, foreign crews have no background checks yet they are carrying petroleum products, ammonium nitrate and LNG around the Australian coast.”

By JOHN MELLOR

AS THE legal team of Carlos Ghosn was telling a Japanese court that the prosecutors in the former Nissan chief’s case against him have “rushed to judgement” and claimed there was simply no evidence to substantiate their allegations, Bloomberg has revealed that Mr Ghosn was not paid all that well anyway.

Mr Ghosn, the man who brought Nissan back from the brink of closure and spent 100 days a year in aircraft between offices for two decades building an alliance that now challenges for the title of the world’s biggest car-maker, was apparently being short-changed

compared with other comparable corporate leaders.

As the case unfolds, details are emerging that indicate Mr Ghosn was not well paid by motor industry standards.

The business news service’s Bloomberg Billionaires Index, says that Mr Ghosn has generated about $A167 million during his career.

Mr Ghosn owns about $A83.52 million of shares – $A47.88 million worth in Nissan, $A36.05 million in Renault and about $A139,200 worth in Mitsubishi Motors Corp. He has disclosed salaries and dividends over the years total another $A83.10 million or so.

Bloomberg added that the number

does not include payments made by Nissan before his income was first disclosed in 2010 and that this would amounts to “tens of millions of dollars”.

But, Bloomberg said, “for most people, Ghosn’s fortune is an almost inconceivable level of wealth, and allegations that he would seek to bolster it might appear outlandish but, in the realm of superstar executives, a nine-figure fortune can seem like slim pickings”.

It cited the late Sergio Marchionne held shares of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ferrari and CNH Industrial worth a combined $A675 million and said Mr Ghosn’s pay was lower than the heads of Ford,

General Motors and Volkswagen.Meanwhile, in his recent court

appearance, Mr Ghosn was able to spend 10 minutes rebutting his detractors and this was followed by a media briefing by Mr Ghosn’s lawyer, Motonari Otsuru.

His team repeated that he was not required to disclose proposed payments to come his way on leaving the company because the amounts were never decided and they had not been approved by the board. A share scheme for Mr Ghosn was due to expire in little more than a month.

The team threw light on another allegation that Mr Ghosn used Nissan funds for a mechanism

set up after the GFC to protect his income (which was paid in yen) and that, by temporarily transferring this derivative to Nissan, he exposed Nissan to losses of $A23 million.

Mr Ghosn said that he was facing huge losses on the contract that was designed to insulate his salary.

But his legal team said prosecutors had ignored the fact that the contract between Mr Ghosn, Nissan and the bank involved “on the other side of the contract” said that Mr Ghosn (not Nissan) was liable to pay any losses.

Life in a Japanese prison is also taking its toll on Mr Ghosn who is now reported to be suffering from a fever.

He saved the company and took it on to global sales glory but Bloomberg says he was short-changed

THE peak year of the internal combustion engine has passed and global sales for new vehicles through 2019 look weak, according to researchers.

Global automotive markets shuddered late last year as sales stalled and researchers warned that 2019 will not show much improvement and, in the case of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, will decline.

China recorded its first annual fall in vehicle sales in more than 20 years, recording a 2018 result that was down six per cent on the previous year with a final tally of 22.7 million units.

In the UK, sales in 2018 fell for the second consecutive year, down 6.8 per cent on the previous year. Sales in major European markets also slumped. In the US, sales were

up only 0.3 per cent on 2017.Behind the falls in sales are

multiple issues but common to all is the reduced demand for diesel vehicles. This has led to buyers moving to petrol-engined vehicles with higher emissions, pushing up the CO2 average of major markets.

At the same time, new emission tests – the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) – caused major delivery bottlenecks, reducing sales in Germany by 10 per cent, six per cent in Italy and 13 per cent in Spain.

To combat the fear of rising emissions, many markets are pushing for electrified vehicles and have either introduced – or plan to introduce – subsidies and incentives to lure ICE owners across to the EVs.

Global automotive research company JATO Dynamics said 2018 was the peak sales year for ICE vehicles and that from this year ICE sales would decline as EVs – and electrified derivatives such as plug-in hybrids – increase in popularity.

In a Financial Times report, JATO said the peak arrived in 2018 following a sales drop for new cars in Europe, the US and China.

International management consultancy Accenture’s senior managing director Axel Schmidt said “selling combustion engine cars to customers will not grow in the future”.

He said global vehicle sales were not expected to fall much in 2019 compared with 2018 – propped up by markets other than the expected declines in China, the US and Europe – but the change would be

the increase in EVs at the expense of ICEs.

JATO research showed that in the first 10 months of 2018, sales of petrol-fuelled vehicles in China fell to under 18 million units from 18.7 million in the corresponding period of 2017. Sales of alternative-fuel vehicles, notably EVs, nearly doubled from 405,000 to 793,000 in the same period.

In the UK, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said new-car sales in 2018 fell by 6.8 per cent to 2.37 million units on poor consumer confidence, the UK’s anti-diesel policies and Brexit.

The indecision about Brexit has already led to Aston Martin flying parts into England and bicycle maker Brompton stockpiling $A2 million of parts to ensure continued production.

FORD’S European division is looking to reduce labor costs over the next few years as the brand embarks on a “comprehensive transformation strategy aimed at strengthening the Ford brand and creating a sustainably profitable business” across the continent.

Though the Blue Oval brand did not confirm the number of job cuts to its

European operations, Ford indicated the possibility of plant closures to the Financial Times newspaper.

The majority of Ford Europe’s 54,000 workers are based in the UK, Germany and Spain.

Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Hackett started an $A18 billion restructuring program last year aimed at containing losses in Europe and China while boosting investment in

EVs and autonomous vehicles.Ford also abandoned a goal of

reaching an eight per cent profit margin by 2020. The company has already made significant changes to its global operations, including ending further development of its sedan range in the US and bringing some of its Chinese production back to the US and Mexico.

BREXIT, CHINA AND DIESEL ALL CRUSHING SALES OF FORD PRODUCTS

Diesel sales in the UK fell 29.6 per cent in the 2018 calendar year despite new emission tests through the WTLP that showed diesels had low CO2 emissions. Alternatively fuelled vehicles, predominantly EVs and hybrids, increased by 20.9 per cent.

The SMMT said petrol-electric hybrids remained the most popular, up 21.3 per cent on 2017, while plug-in hybrids rose 24.9 per cent overall for the year, though popularity reduced following the UK government removing subsidies for these cars in October.

Sales into 2019 are now expected to fall significantly in comparison to increasingly strong growth in the subsidised European mainland markets. The SMMT predicts a two per cent fall.

Pure EVs in the UK grew 13.8 per

cent in the year but still represent only 0.7 per cent of the new-car market.

The SMMT said it was concerned that CO2 emissions are now on the rise. It reports that CO2 output is up for the second year, now up 2.9 per cent in 2018 to a fleet average of 124.5 grams per kilometre.

“This is despite huge investment by manufacturers to deliver more efficient cars, with the average new or updated model emitting 8.3 per cent less CO2 than the model it replaced,” the SMMT said in its report.

“While part of this fleet average CO2 increase was due to segment shift and the introduction of the new, more onerous WLTP test which produces higher figures, the move away from diesels is having a significant impact.”

AUSTRALIA has become the benchmark market for the Ferrari supercar brand and will build strongly on that position with a rollout of new customer engagement programs, according to Ferrari Australasia CEO Herbert Appleroth.

Mr Appleroth told GoAutoNews Premium that at a recent Ferrari international global dealer conference in Italy, Australia was described as an industry benchmark for the past five years.

Mr Appleroth said the accolade was the result of a combination of product, a strong dealer network and customer involvement.

“I’m happy with the dealer network and that 2019 will bring the

full gambit of Ferrari’s involvement in the specialist drive-event market,” he told GoAutoNews Premium.

Events include the Targa Florio Australia tribute “which was started two years ago to give our clients the experience of driving their Ferrari in a major non-competitive but high-performance event in a fantastic landscape”, Mr Apperoth said, followed by the Targa High Country this year and then the Targa Barrier Reef.

“Strategically, when we go into the Targa Tasmania, for example, we will do a roadshow and engage with supercar owners and potential owners the week before and the week after the event.,” he said.

“When we go to the dealership in Tasmania, we can engage with existing customers and potential owners.

“The same when we go to Targa Barrier Reef. We can engage with clients we have in sales and service. So we do a roadshow for Far North Queensland customers.”

Mr Appleroth said the location of customer events was not directly related to the location of the Ferrari dealerships.

“For the future, we will be doing a lot more activities in Noosa, for example. But that doesn’t mean we need a dealership there,” he said.

“And we are doing this around Australia. So when you’re in Port Lincoln we could run an event from our Adelaide dealer, or Byron Bay and Lismore from our new

Gold Coast dealership. It could be Gosford from our Sydney dealership, Canberra from a new dealer, and so on.

“It is so important that we get owners and prospective owners involved in these activities. To us, this is everything.

“We do this because it’s the right thing to do with our product that has always been performance focused.

“We are the first supercar manufacturer to have a factory presence in Australia and we are the first supercar manufacturer to completely reinvigorate its range to suit customer needs.”

Mr Appleroth said social media was absolutely vital in growing brand presence and awareness in the current market.

STRATTON Finance Group is to halve its profit contribution to majority shareholder Carsales in the current financial year as legislative changes to car financing, introduced by the corporate watchdog in November last year, bite into the finance industry.

Carsales said it expects Strattons to show a net profit on its books of around $1 million, down from $2 million last financial year. It also expects a $48 million impairment to its investment in Stratton, slicing into Carsales’ profit as an adjustment in the 2018-19 financial year.

The downgrading of the valuation of its 50.1 per cent stake in Stratton was caused by “certain

external factors” including the tight credit market conditions and the changes made to the F&I industry by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) that became effective from November 1 last year.

In a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange, Carsales said: “The identified external factors have impacted Statton since the 2018 financial year financial report along with the realisation of some delays in operational benefits which had been expected to offset yield reductions, resulting in the anticipated impairment.”

However, Carsales said that the Strattons business is increasing.

KIA Motors Australia (KMAu) is serving up wildcards in the lead up to its 18-year-old sponsorship of the Australian Open tennis event this week with special editions of three of its car models.

The tennis relationship, funded by Kia’s parent in South Korea, is now the longest that the 114-year-old event has had, surpassing Kia’s sponsorship predecessor Ford that supported the January event for 16 years.

Sales of Ford and Kia during their sponsorship era hint at the value of corporate support for high-

visibility events. It must have proved its value

to Kia. The car-maker recently extended its partnership with the Australian Open for a further five years to 2023. The sponsorship involves financial and logistical support, believed to be valued at more than $10 million a year.

Part of the logistics is a 100-plus fleet of Kia vehicles used for chauffeur and courtesy transport functions that have accumulated more than six-million kilometres of travel around Melbourne since Kia started with the event in 2002.

The Australian Open has

enjoyed a modest turnover in sponsors. Ford was with the event for 16 years and withdrew in 2001, replaced by Kia for the following season. Around the same time, long-standing associate sponsor Heineken left in 2003 after joining up in 1998. It was paying an estimated $6 million a year.

When Kia replaced Ford as main sponsor for the 2002 tournament, the sponsorship was believed to have been offered at a reduced rate for the first year, then elevated to about $10 million to make it the richest single-event sponsorship in Australia.

Kia annually leverages its involvement with the Australian Open to release new car models. This week it will be new versions of the Picanto micro-car, the X-Line amd GT, and upper-spec variants of the SUV pair, Sportage and Sorento.

“Since we first introduced Picanto into what we were warned was a dead segment, this little star has captured the imagination in a way which is nothing short of amazing,” said KMAu chief operating officer Damien Meredith.

The Picanto is now the top-seller in a city-car segment with an 82

per cent market share. Four years ago, the segment was slumping as buyers ignored micro cars, causing the exodus of its then major players, the Volkswagen Up, Nissan Micra, Holden Spark, Suzuki Celerio and Fiat Panda.

Mr Meredith said of the Picanto that “it has not only revived the segment but regenerated interest every time a new model or derivative has been introduced”.

Also on the AO Special Edition menu is a Sportage mid-size SUV and Sorento large SUV that add features above the Si grade for a small price increase.
