Things to Keep in Mind Both countries use different currencies Both countries are in the Southern Hemisphere: Further south you go, the colder it gets Further north you go, the warmer it gets While were in Spring, these countries are in Fall Northern Hemisphere has hurricanes Southern Hemisphere has Typhoons which spin in the opposite direction Its said whirlpools (and toilets) spin in the opposite direction 9. Instead of wondering/worrying if its fast (Eastern) or slow (Central) time, well have to wonder which day it is! 15. Day 2 International Date Line 16. Day 3 Auckland, then Rotorua Sleep ON THE PLANE no rest for the weary! Hit the ground running! 17. Day 4 Rotorua Ducks you may see, but the name comes from the land/amphibious vehicle. 18. Day 6 Free time AM, then Fly from Auckland to Sydney Walking Tour of The Rocks - unique place in Sydneys colonial history-- considered the birthplace of European Australia on the western shoreline of Sydney Cove. 20. Day 10 Cairns (Great Barrier Reef) Highly recommended to snorkel; it's safe, life vests are given and you're near the pontoon boat, plus the Great Barrier Reef is disappearing and may not be around much longer! 24. Currency Australia is nearly 1 for 1 (98-99% of US $) New Zealand is close (94-95% of US $) I would recommend using a Capital One credit card no foreign currency transaction or conversion fees. If you do convert/bring cash, please only use a small amount. If cash is stolen, it cannot be replaced. 28. Tips & Tipping For the majority of situations in NZ/AU, you won't have to tip a dime. Here are the rare occasions when you are expected to leave gratuity: 10% in *fine* restaurants ONLY Taxis: Round off the fare There are usually no mandatory gratuities or built in restaurant service charges of any kind in Australia, although a 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be included in the total figure on any bill. 29. Tips & Tipping We, as a group, WILL tip the following: Tour Leader Anja Bus Drivers City Guides Please bring an additional $100 for tipping. Give to me and I will distribute to each of the above the last time we see each of these individuals. Its best if you give it to me at the airport so you dont spend this by end of trip. 30. Power Adapters & Converters Need a universal travel adapter to fit the wall plug, then need a converter to take power down from 220 to 110. Best Buy has both (below) together for only $39.99 31. PACK LIGHT!!! I bring everything I need in carry-ons ONLY this is free If you bring additional bags to be CHECKED, there are fees which are not included, traveler responsibility From Air New Zealand: For travel originating in the US or for travel to the US which is not en route to another country United States legislation requires that all passengers whose travel starts in the US or who are travelling to the US as their final destination, will have the same carriers baggage allowances and charges applied for the entire ticketed journey. 32. 3-1-1 Rule Any carry-on can only have a 1 quart size bag with your liquids and lotions. If in doubt, place it in your 1 quart bag. The most any liquid can be is 3.4 oz 33. BRING YOUR PASSPORT Only show your PASSPORT and BOARDING PASS since this is an INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT. Cannot depart without your passport!!! 34. VISA No VISA required for New Zealand $20 VISA required for Australia 35. SAFETY Both countries are fairly safe in areas we are touring. Keep belongings CLOSE and UP FRONT. Stay with the group for added safety. Think SMART Dont create an international incident 36. WiFi, Mobile Data, Contact Call you mobile provider to ensure no data charges occur while international. Download the app called PINGER so you can text/call for free using WiFi.
