In 1953 Donald Healey had an ambition to take the24-hour endurance record. He used ‘standardproduction cars’ to take the production car recordscovering 3100 miles in 30 hours at an averagespeed of 104.3 mph

In 1954 a new car was commissioned and dubbed‘the Endurance car’. It was based on a standardchassis that was prepared with a modified Weslakedesigned cylinder head, 16 inch Dunlop peg drivewheels and Dunlop disc brakes (a first inproduction sports cars). There were a number ofaerodynamic modifications with a small aeroscreen and head fairing, plus an air-cooled batterycompartment in the right hand passenger seat andunderbody streamlining.

On Aug 23rd 1954, supervised by the AmericanAutomobile club the car set 83 National andInternational Class D records driven by DonaldHealey, George Eyston, Carroll Shelby, MortGoodall and Roy Jackson-Moore. A 24-houraverage speed of 132.29 mph was set giving theequivalence of driving from New York to SanFrancisco in a day!

Unfortunately the original car was scrapped shortlyafter the records in the fifties as salt had taken itstoll and made it unsafe.

Healey expert Jeremy Welch has recreated the1954 car based on a works lightweight chassis, this car was built from scratch with a view toattempting an endurance record in 2009.

The car needed to be able to sustain the longdistance record attempt and as such had to befully functional. Parts had to be up to the taskwhich ruled out the use of any original componentsthat were not up to the job.

During the development of this car many parts hadto be sourced and in some cases remade tomatch the original. These are now available toowners of the original 100S cars.

The ambition for this recreated car is to “exceed allHealey non-supercharged records” which meanslapping around 150mph for at least 500 miles.

The car has already been timed at 147.2 mph intesting.

Early Welch/Brooke history - At the start of the 100 miles trial. Beckshill Speed Trials with Brooke cars. World marine records with Brooke marine.

The motoring history of Denis WelchMotorsport stretches back many years.Jeremy Welch’s great, great grandfatherJohn ‘Walter’ Brooke (known as the OldGovernor) started business in 1874, at thetender age of 25. He had trained at Hogg’sfoundry, in Southwark, London, owned byhis wife’s family and after a brief trip to theUSA set up a foundry and manufacturingbusiness in Lowestoft, England.

The firmcommenced inquite a modestway, thebusiness beingof a generalnature, andincluded castings and ironwork for theFishing and Trawling Fleet which were ofcourse at that time all sailing vessels.Building ironwork, manufacturing machineryincluding steam retorts, bloater pastemachinery, and soldering machines for thehandling of both round and oval tins werealso made, as well as lifts, hoists andamateur greenhouse hot water systems. On July 28th 1897 he incorporated thecompany J.W.Brooke and in 1899 theystarted to make internal combustion engines.

His son John ‘Mawdesley’ Brooke (knownas the Governor) was on the board at theage of 22 and it was he who first tookinterest in this new phenomena in the year1892, whilst sailing upon Oulton Broad.

He saw a boatof about 16feet in length, with a box inthe centre of it,comingtowards him at

quite a respectable speed. There was nosmoke, and practically no noise and hisengineering instincts were at onceawakened to investigate this boat.

The boat, known as The Old Tub belongedto a Mr Estcourt and was fitted with abenzoline engine—the first engine sent overto the UK by Herr Gottleib Daimier.

He was able to see the possibilities of thistype of propulsion and from that day thestudy of the petrol engine was one of hiskeenest interests.

His first personal experiment with an internalcombustion engine was in 1899, and theresulting machine he believed representedthe birth of the three-cylinder internalcombustion engine.

Mawdesley was some inventor himselfregistering patents for an automatic Two JetCarburetter, the forerunner, of the presentday carburetter and a chain ‘change speed’gear box, an ingenious arrangement thenused on most motor 'buses.

Their first carwas tested in1901 and puton the marketin 1902. Thecompany had100 employeesat this time. This first car was of somewhatunusual design with a 10hp 3-cylindervertical engine mounted transversely undera very small bonnet it was driven by chainsmated to an all chain gearbox.

In 1904 a six- cylinder car was designedand put on the market. The original enginewas 35/

5" bore, the car being described as25-h.p. and was the World's Pioneer six-cylinder car, although it was disputed as towhether the six-cylinder Napier or the six-cylinder BROOKE took the road first, butundoubtedly the Firm built the first six-cylinder Marine Motor.

A 40hp sixcylinder enginewas offered in1907. This wasthe hey day forBrooke motorcars after 1913

as they started to concentrate more on theirmarine business.

TheWelch/Brookefamily are nostrangers toachievementon thecompetitionstage either. They competed at the veryearliest Beckshill Speed Trials and the familyfirm had notable success with water speedrecords, taking the 1925 world record andsupplying tender boats to the RAF for theSchneider trophy races and latterly built theVirgin Atlantic challenger for Richard Branson.

Denis Welch followed in his Grandfathersfootsteps in 1977. After a career in foundrywork he switched to cars and built the mostsuccessful Healey racing business in theWorld. They have won just about everythingthere is in Europe and the UK.

If it’s someone with a pedigree youwant to build your car, then JeremyWelch has one of the best, somethingyou just can’t get in one lifetime - over100 years of motoring history andwinning throughout.

It is, as they say ‘in the blood’.

Family achievements have included:

• The World Water Speed Record with aboat called ‘Bulldog’ in 1925

• Over 340 trophies for motor boat wins

• The European FIA championship with theirown Healey in 1990

• The rebuilding of the 1965 Le Mans AustinHealey Sprite and its sister car returning toLe mans 25 years later

• Rebulding the legendary RWD132 originalworks 100S in 2008/9

• Construction of many Healeychampionship winning cars

ENDURANCE CAR

HEALEY

RECREATING HISTORYthe story of a new car

To faithfully recreate the world beating HealeyEndurance car, careful research was undertaken.

The start point was an original works lightweightchassis which was examined and brought up tospecification using our specialised modern jig.

This was then cloaked in an all aluminium bodyencompassing aerodynamic modifications as perthe original works car. The mesmeric metallic green

paintwork was applied after verifying the colourwith the late Geoff Healey shortly before his death.

Finally the detail that was so specific to the originalprototype car was carefully matched and verifiedby Roy Jackson Moore one of the original recordbreaking drivers.

Roy was the North American sales Director for theHealey works and went on to be a major part of

the North American sales effort for Britishsportscars with names such as Aston Martin.Perhaps his most notable achievement was tointroduce Carroll Shelby to AC which resulted inthe creation of the legendary Cobra car.

As you can imagine after such a long time thereare many things that get re-interpreted and there isnothing like an original competitor giving an on thespot, point of view to verify the real facts.

Once the bodywork was complete, attention wasdirected towards the mechanical elements. Thedesire to make a car that was capable of breakinga record meant that every component had to beup to the task. Some parts were simply notavailable and as the original car was a prototypemany had to be researched and remade fromscratch. This involved CAD drawings and newcastings and machining all undertaken in house.

Pegdrive hubs and the rear axle set up had notbeen made since the works days and were re-made from CAD drawings.

The engine was constructed from scratch using aproven range of parts with adaptations made asper the original works performance enhancementsand dyno tested in-house. Even the oil cooler hadto be remodelled from original drawingsincorporating modern filter and flow components.

Our experience has helped produce a car that hasbeen extensively looked over by ex workspersonnel and drivers, all of whom have given it asignificant thumbs up approval.

The parts developed during this recreation havebeen faithfully copied from the original and are avital source of components for many original workscars, as they allow owners to keep themcompetitive.

RECORD BREAKINGtaking on the past

The Healey Endurance car was completed in July2008 and final setup tests were concluded in Oct2008 with great success. The car achieved itstarget speed of 147.2 mph, very close to ,thetheoretical maximum of the original wind tunnelanalysis calculated in the days when the car wasdesigned.

The 1954 works Healey car achieved a 132.81mph average for 1000 kilometres. The recreatedcar built with the ambition to 'exceed all nonsupercharged Healey records' has been developedcontinuously during the winter to try to better theworks record car achievements.

Late 2008 tests had proved the cars straight linespeed but further work was required onsuspension and aerodynamics to suit the 2 milecircular Millbrook track designated for a recordattempt.

The higher speeds achieved at the Millbrook testfacility were bordering on the scary, as the originalconfiguration made from the Bonneville settingswere too harsh leading to some skittishness, whichyou do not need at nearly 150 mph.

In a test on 19th March 2009 at Millbrook provingground during a one hour constant-run it exceededthe speed achieved by its predecessor by 10 mph.

This test was the first outing in 2009 with thoseimprovements on board. The purpose of the testwas to run the car for a one-hour constant-test tocheck long distance running and driver experienceat the wheel and to see how well the engine couldpull the tall diff ratio that had been calculated to berequired to run at high speed whilst notoverstressing the engine which might lead to failureover a long distance.

A wind tunnel test took place in mid April to see ifimprovements could be made to theaerodynamics, and significant lessons were learntabout the flow of air on the front of the car andthrough the bodywork, further minor correctionswere then undertaken to make that vital differenceto outright drag and speed.

It looks as if the car will make an attempt on the1000 km endurance record late in 2009, thosewho are interested can keep up to date from ourwebsite

THE NEW 100Sa recreation of the original car

The development of the Healey ‘Endurance’ carhas left Denis Welch in a priviledged position. Their30 year history building and racing Healeys meansthat they had the pedigree to undertake such arecreation. Their in house design and CADmanufacturing enabled them to recreate legendarycars such as this, at their base in Yoxall.

The Healey works produced 50 special edition carscalled the 100S to celebrate the Endurance carrecord. They are in short supply these days costingupwards of £300,000.

Using skills long forgotten, such as chassisfabrication, bodywork & engine building - aided byin-house dyno facilities, Denis Welch Motorsport

can build a new 100S specifically for you.

For those with a desire and passion to own sucha car they are the answer to a prayer, a turnkeysolution to your dreams.

The new 100S created by Denis Welch Motorsportis a faithful recreation of those special edition cars, they are made from new with all the character andstyle that the original cars captured.

They are produced on a new jig-built chassis madein Britain - to British standards with a racepedigree that ensures stability and stiffness tomatch. This is a vital platform on which to base acompetition or performance car. Lovingly crafted with an aluminium body, built and finished by hand

in the traditional fashion, they show what a classicthese cars were. Those beautiful design curvesdrawn by Gerry Coker so many years ago are a joyto look at and are hand painted in traditionalcolours of your choosing.

Mechanical components such as suspension, gearbox and engine are built to your requirementswith due regard to the original cars principles.

Being very faithful to an original 100S, these carscan apply for FIA Historic Technical Passports , thisallows entries into many historic events byinvitation.

So you no longer have to dream, simply call.

THE 100S CHASSIS & BODYstiffer, stronger and corrosion free

For over thirty years we have been involvedwith Healeys and have constantly endeavouredto produce parts that provide peerless levels ofperformance in service.

Much of our earlier work involved attempting tomake 40 year old components perform wellbeyond their design life. Frequently theysimply failed to survive the rigours of age andthe stress of racing.

Chassis were often found to be weak andsometimes the damage incurred was simplytoo great for them to be successfullystraightened.

Our solution to these challenges was toreproduce them from scratch and improvethem where weaknesses were found.

Modern design and materials meant we couldenhance performance, increasing both strengthand rigidity and correct corrosion problems, whilst retaining the compatibility and integrity ofthe original.

We invested heavily in new tooling to develop aBritish made chassis that was the equal to ourengineered parts.

This required an alignment Jig backed up bynew Press Tooling. Thus we were able to

ensure highly accurate chassis geometry andcomplete control of the process, guaranteeingthe quality of the finished product.

Our 100S chassis is made to these standardswith the finest attention to detail and originality.

We have had the opportunity over the years toview an enourmous amount of chassis andmake detailed notes regarding their indivdualcharacteristics and the varying details thatinevitably occur in a hand built car such asthese.

THE ENGINEa highly developed version of the original

Although the 100S engine is based on astandard 100/4 block there are significantalterations that have been made to improveperformance. Water and oil galleries arerelocated to match the specialised cylinderhead. Oil pump drives were different as wereinlet and exhaust which were on the oppositeside to the normal 100/4.

We offer a complete service for thoseconsidering building a 100S engine from reworking 100/4 blocks to supply of provencomponents and upgraded engines.

REAR AXLESpecific to 100S multi ratio diff case and bearings

One of the 100S components that requiresparticular consideration is the differential ratios. The original 100S was made in a limited batchof 50 cars specifically designed for 'drive to thetrack' competition, as such it had a specialiseddiff housing that could accept varying ratios.

The availability of original housings isdecreasing as they get old, damaged andshow signs of wear and as such existingreplacements were unsuitable for such a highspeed car as the Healey Endurance car so wedecided to manufacture them from new.

We were determined to make this a particularlyfaithful reproduction. There are owners oforiginal cars who are finding a replacement issimply not made to this standard, so wewanted to offer a product that would suit them.

It had to be able to take the original ratios of2.9 and 3.2 which we have manufactured forsome time, again with the benefit of originaldrawings

We have similarly had to recreate the pinionflange and Heavy Duty seal housing

This now allows us to supply complete brandnew assembled diff units built to order.

INLET AND EXHAUSTspecial induction and extraction

The original 100S was a marked change fromits sister the 100 when it came to inductionand exhaust. Harry Weslake redesigned theheads with increased power in mind, but witha view to fitting the standard block. The inletand exhaust ports were moved from the left tothe right, as the push rod location in theoriginal head prevented a full 8 port system. This meant running the exhaust down the rightside of the car. Our induction and exhaustsystem takes full advantage of thisreconfiguration.

Our inlet manifold has been remade with theexperience and knowledge gained over manyyears of racing.

The large bore diameter of this system givesincreased power from the engine.

We pressure test them to give the utmostperformance and quality, as smallimperfections in the welds can create an airleak, which is the cause of annoying poppingon over run.

Similarly the cold air box has been fabricatedafter extensive testing on the Endurance carproject that involved comparisons with bothSU and Weber configurations. Both can beaccommodated according to your desiredspecification.

This is a vital component to get cool, dense aircirculating around all the intakes for thecarburetters to get a balanced airflow.

COOLINGspecialist fittings for the 100S

The 100S had a variety of subtle coolingmodifications that were different to its 100/4sister.

The water rail and convoluted top hose beingtypical of modifications made.

To recreate the 1954 Healey Endurance car thecooling had to endure high speeds for a longdistance and needed to be right, the oil coolerdesign was evaluated in terms of flow andfiltration performance from the perspective ofmodern technology and design.

The original spring rates and filtration were ofconcern to us and we sought improvements tomaximise efficiency, but we were ever vigilantto ensure that to all extents and purposes itwas a faithful replica of the original design.

We'd seen other copies and were not surethey would give us the safety margin at theedge of performance that we needed for theEndurance car, this product is the result.

This is typical of the type of product designand development that we undertake at DenisWelch Motorsport where our racing pedigree,in house design and manufacturing give us adistinct advantage in problem solving andproduct development.

BRAKESbetter than the original

The original 100S was the first productionsportscar to be fitted with four wheel discbakes, these being manufactured by Dunlop. They used round brake pads with some evenhaving chrome plated discs.

These brake systems were not without theirteething troubles, with issues concerningflexing of callipers and heat sink problems thatcaused reliability worries often known as“Dunlop Fear”.

We are privileged to have had access to manyof the original prototype brake designdrawings, both for the production and RecordBreaking cars. Many are branded “DunlopAviation Research and DevelopmentDepartment”.

With this knowledge, we were able to take acloser look at the original design and byimplementing modern metallurgy and safetyimprovements, the resulting product hasproved to be a superior and more effectivesystem than the original.

We offer a choice of original round or latersquare brake pads and calliper bodies. Thelater being easier to check pad life and simplerto change. Both types are made by ourselvesfor the front and rear of the car with a widechoice of modern brake pad materials.

SUSPENSIONkeeping it all facing the right way

Over the years we have been racing Healeyswe have naturally developed suspensioncomponents to give improved performance.

We have also noticed just how much theoriginal components were subject to failure sohave often remanufactured new items withmodern metallurgy and safety in mind, radiusing corners to avoid cracking andallowing changes in camber angles required forbetter grip.

The Endurance car provided new stimulus toremanufacture the earlier items such assteering lever arms, shims and spacers as wellas wheel bearing carriers. We carry a widerange of components backed by a wealth ofexperience that can assist customers whatevertheir chosen sporting discipline.

“It is no mean coincidence thattoday we specialise in four and six cylinderracing engines.”

Our involvement in the competition side of motor racing extends back over 100 years to the days

of the pioneers. Jeremy Welch's great grandfather built the first six cylinder engine ever made

in the UK in 1904 and went on to build Brooke Marine racing engines with notable success. Our own development

programme is headed by our highly successful Big Healey (Reg KVS 484), one that has seen success all over Europe. It is supported by our class winning 100/4.

Our experience has extended from Ford Anglias, single seaters, sports racing cars, to 24hr Touring Cars and beyond.

Running these cars has resulted in a world conquering array of partsthat quite simply guarantees success to almost anyone.
