President’s Messageby Allan Gross

Membership Reportby Mary Gross

It was neat to see more of us drive our Healey’s tothe last monthly meeting. The weather was far fromideal but it seems we are all eager to get out and drive.Mary and I experienced a little dampness with our topdown. She asked me why are we doing this? We don’teven get points any more!

The tech session at the March meeting was great. It was both informative and held everyone’s interest. Itwas presented in a fun and understandable fashion. Thanks to Richard and Tom and we all really enjoyedthe personal tidbits you both added. A special thanks toBritish Auto Works as our hosts and for their year roundsupport of our club.

After what I am sure were numerous phone callsand some anxious moments by Leon, the activity calen-dar for the year is just about finalized. It looks to be afun year with some new hosts (thanks very much) andevents spread out to occur up and down the I-5 corridor.Super job Leon and thanks from all of us.

Speaking of activities, don’t wait too long beforeyou make your arrangements for Healey Rendezvous2001 and NW Austin Healey meet in September. In re-gard to the NW meet I did receive an e-mail from JoyceToms that the cost of the “experience package” providedby Banjo Creek farms is $27 and not $37. Check yourMarch Healey Northwest for the details of the “experi-ence package” I can’t wait for both events.

I encourage all of you to share your love experi-ences with the Healey with all club members. Just writeup your personal story and send it to Terry Hellickson. He needs all articles and photos no later than the 20th ofthe month to meet his deadline.

I wish you all the very best of motoring,

Allan

British Auto Works was a fitting location for two veryinteresting and important tech sessions which are safetyrelated.

Richard Mayor and Tom Monaco teamed up to put ontwo excellent tech sessions covering suspension, tiresand wheels. The weather was a little damp but severalHealey¹s with tops down and up made the trip out to theNorth Plains area. Forty or so people were in attendanceto learn all the tricks and service items for fine tuningand repairing a Healey¹s suspension.

Richard Mayor led off with a very interesting and orga-nized presentation of all the individual suspension com-

March 10th Tech Sessionsby Bob Wiley

ponents. He brought along an actual 100-6/3000 frame and most all the suspension parts. He took the group step by step through howthe suspension is designed and how to im-prove and service the parts that need replac-ing as our cars age. Richard has been racingHealeys for a number of years so he was ableto explain many modifications owners can

consider which improve handling even if your interestis just normal highway driving.

Page 9: 2001 April Healey Northwest

Healey Northwest u April 2001 9

Tom Monaco presented the second tech session cover-ing proper tire sizes, wheels and the very important wirewheel hubs. Spoke wheels require proper care if oneexpects as smooth a ride as disk wheels. Worn splines, broken spokes, incorrect tire sizes can all add up to poorhandling and major failures. Annual service to wheelsand splines is recommended.

The club meeting followed at about 3 P.M. after whichabout 30 people moved up the road to the well knownHelvetia Tavern for their excellent food and beverage.

On the evening of March 3rd, 2001, Saturday, just aboutmidnight, in a quiet residential area east of Gresham,Oregon, something happened that strikes fear intoeveryone’s heart. The homeowner heard the smokealarm in her house and went upstairs to see what wasthe matter.

As she progressed to the upper part of her house shecould hear a crackle and then see the flames coming

from here large screen television set located in her fam-ily room. She immediately called 911, but the fire wasalready out of control.

The damage to her home and contents was extensive. The family room was located next to her garage, whichcontained a Ford Explorer, now completely melted, andtwo Austin Healeys. The Healeys were on a home stor-

age lift, one above the other, a ’59 BN-6 on top and a’60 BT-7 on the bottom. The Healeys had been in very

good condition, both painted primrose yellow with blackinteriors and chrome wire wheels.

Both Healeys have been in her family for years. TheBN-6 was a Valentine’s Day present in 1977 from herhusband. They already owned the BT-7 at that time.

The owner didn’t belong to any auto clubs so not manypeople knew about these vehicles. They have been de-clared a total loss by her insurance company. What asad sight to see! Don’t let this happen to you.

Pretty much like I planned, after installing new sparkplugs and the re-charged battery the old Sprite sputteredto life, again.

There were, however, a couple of minor bumps. I col-lected one seat bottom, the parts box, the battery, a gascan, jumper cables, the rebuilt speedometer, my new caseof Craftsman tools, the manual and headed out to thegarage. I rolled up the cover and pushed the Bugeye outinto the light of day, first time in four months.

I removed the old plugs, gapped the new ones and thendiscovered that the new tool case does not have a deep

dish spark plug socket. Bummer. So I hand tightenedthe new plugs, dropped in the battery, installed the speed-ometer and hooked up all the wires. I then turned thekey, and was reassured to see the ignition light burningbrightly and hear the whir of the petrol pump as the lineand carburetors were filled.

I really didn’t want to drive all the way home and backjust for a spark plug socket, so guess what? Good oldvice grips to the rescue. If you’re careful, you can getenough grip on the base of the plug and by flipping themover you can get enough successive swing to tighten theplugs; enough to start the engine anyway.

I turned the ignition switch off and pulled the starterknob for 10-15 seconds, to get the oil circulating a littlein the engine block. Then I turned the ignition on againand I pulled the starter knob ... five seconds later theengine sputtered to life spewing blue exhaust as the oilin the cylinders was burned off. After a few minutes I

turned the engine off and pushed the Bugeye back intothe garage and then headed home for the plug socket, some carburetor oil and Zoe. To quote a friend, “life isgood”.

Next stop is the detail shop to get it cleaned, washedand waxed. After that we’ll install the windscreen withthe new glass and start to get the first shakedown miles

of the season under our belt. The LaConner Tulip/Daf-fodil Rally in the Skagit Valley is only a few weeks away.We should be ready, and grinning.

The detail shop did a great job getting the body washedand waxed. Without the windscreen the body was easierto clean. I installed the windscreen and new wipers yes-terday, so we’re ready for the seasonal shakedown miles. We’re looking forward to the Tulip/Daffodil Rally.

Yeeeee Haaawwwwwwww!!We’ve got ignition!!!

Healey Family Newsby Bill Bolton

Margot Healey is a grandmother for the first time as herdaughter, Kate gave birth to a son on January 31. Kateand husband, Nicholas Hewetson, have named their son,Hal Healey Hewetson. Mother and son are doing welland Margot is not spoiling her grandson.

Margot has accepted an invitation to be a guest of honorat the Healey Rendezvous 2001 in Grants Pass.

Leaving The Nest

During a quarrel with his parents, the teenager ragedagainst household restrictions. “I want excitement, ad-venture, money and beautiful women!” he cried. “I’llnever find them here at home, so I’m leaving. Don’t tryto stop me!” With that he headed for the door, but hisfather followed him. “I told you I don’t want you to tryto stop me!” the boy said.

“Who’s trying to stop you?” replied his father. “If youwait a minute, I’ll go with you.”

True Lawyer Story

A Charlotte NC man having purchased a box of veryrare and expensive cigars then insured them against fire, among other things. Within a month, he had smokedhis entire stock-pile of these great cigars and withoutyet having made even his first premium payment on thepolicy, the man filed a claim against the insurance com-pany. In his claim, the man stated the cigars were lost“in a series of small fires.” The insurance company re-fused to pay, citing the obvious reason: that the man hadconsumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyersued...and won!

In delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insur-ance company that the claim was frivolous. The judgestated nevertheless, that the man held a policy from thecompany in which it had warranted that the cigars wereinsurable and also guaranteed that it would insure themagainst fire, without defining what is considered to be“unacceptable fire,” and was obligated to pay the claim.Rather than endure a lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid$15,000 to the man for his loss of the rare cigars lost inthe “fires”.

Now the best part: After the man cashed the check, theinsurance company had him arrested on 24 counts ofARSON!! With his own insurance claim and testimonyfrom the previous case being used against him, the manwas convicted of intentionally burning his insured prop-erty and sentenced him to 24 months in jail and a $24,000fine.

This is a true story and was the first place winner in therecent Criminal Lawyers Darwin Award Contest.

WHAT FELL OUT OF THE BIBLE

A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fasci-nated as he fingered through the old pages.

Suddenly something fell out of the Bible. He picked upthe object and looked at it closely. What he saw was anold leaf that had been pressed in between the pages.

“Momma, look what I found,” the boy called out.

“What have you got there, dear?” his mother asked.

With astonishment in the young boy’s voice, he an-swered: “I think it’s Adam’s underwear!”
