MY BANH MI CHANGING EXPERIENCE

Name of Program: Global Passport under Global Citizen ProgramDate: 10th January 2015Venue: Ho Chi Minh City, VietnamHosting entity: AIESEC in Ho Chi Minh City

Global Passport is a national project by AIESEC in Vietnam hosted byAIESEC in Ho Chi Minh City under Global Community DevelopmentProgram. Vietnamese youths do not get to speak English as Vietnam isnot an English speaking country. Because of this Vietnamese youths donot possess strong English speaking skills. Global Passport aims toprovide a platform for Vietnamese youths to speak and practice theirEnglish speaking skills with volunteers from all over the world.

We have classes every from 6:00P.M to 8:00P.M in Travel house coffeelocated in 28 Tô n Thất Tù ng, Bến Thà nh, 1, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. Thereare a total of 8 volunteers for Global Passport Season 8. 2 from Australia,2 from Indonesia and 4 from Malaysia including myself.

Our job was to design class content which gives the student a chanceto interact and speak in English. The topic to be used is Multiculturalism. So basically we design class activities which focuses on this topic. Wehave two classes to teach, one class having 22 students and the otherclass having 12 students, thus a total of 34 students. The students arearound 19 to 20 years old studying in various universities around Ho ChiMinh City.

In the classes, we present to the students about our home countriesand our cultures. I share to the students the various cultures of Malaysiaas well as about Universiti Malaysia Pahang. The students in return shareto us bits and pieces of Vietnamese culture and customs. In order toengage the students more we held debates, role plays as well as asketch performance.

Besides the classes, the students get a chance to help the volunteersorganize an event called Culture Day. Culture day is like a global villagewhere various booths are set up representing a country. The students aredivided into smaller teams, each supporting a booth.

The students and the volunteers managed to work together and organize thisevent in a week. Being the Organizing Committee President I felt very proud of mystudents. We worked hard and spent a lot of time preparing for this. This eventmanaged to bring the students closer to the volunteers as well.

In this project, I’ve learn many things. The most important lesson is that I amvery proud to be a Malaysian, and I am very proud of my university. I wouldnever have imagined. I’ll get the opportunity to volunteer in another countryand help change the society. Towards the end of the project I can see howmuch my students have changed. In the first class they barely can speak to usin English. Towards the last few classes, the students no longer fear to speak inEnglish. They will speak to us whenever they have the chance to. That is when Iknew I’ve managed to make a difference and created an impact.

Before I end my report I would like to express my utmost gratitude firstly toUniversiti Malaysia Pahang for giving the opportunity and the support tovolunteer in Vietnam. Secondly I would like to thank AIESEC in UniversityMalaysia Pahang for assisting me in securing my project in Vietnam and aidingme from the day I fly off and to the day I landed back in Malaysia.

What are you waiting for?Seize the opportunity and start a life changing journey of your own
