Leonard Harold, a Virginian and follower of Daniel Boone, came to the area in 1821 and purchased over 300 acres of land from the government. Because of its access to the Missouri River, he realized that it would be a good place for a town. And in 1836, to accommodate the influx of more and more German immigrants, he sectioned off a portion of his property and laid out the first streets and lots of the town. Originally called Mount Pleasant, the town was later renamed Augusta in 1842, after it had been discovered that the name ‘Mount Pleasant’ had already

been registered for another town. On the Northwestern section of his

property, Harold constructed a 2-story log house and grew tobacco as well as other crops.

In 1854 Leonard Harold’s farm was sold to Christian Knoernschild, who had recently emigrated from Bavaria. He made several additions to Augusta and continued to raise grain, livestock and grapes on the remaining farmland. In the late 1800’s a flood changed the course of the Missouri River. Although Augusta no longer had a boat landing as a

result of the change of the river’s course, the town then owned several hundred acres of river bottomland, and an additional 100 acres was added to the Knoernschild farm.

Bob Knoernschild represents the fourth generation of the family to operate the farm. Bob and his wife, Ellen, planted the first orchards and vineyards in 1967. Today, there are also over 1,000 apple trees, 400 peach trees, vineyards, berries and vegetable plantings on the now 75-acre farm.

The farm is now open to the public from July through early November and offers a ‘taste of history’ along with seasonal fruits, vegetables, honey from their own beehives and items hand made in their farmhouse kitchen.

In the Summer season, in July and August, they offer blackberries, peaches, plums, pluots (an apricot-plum cross), tomatoes, eggplant, muskmelon and watermelon. In the Fall there are apples, three types of squash and sweet potatoes. A ‘Pumpkin Fantasyland’ offers hayrides and other activities for the kids.

The Knoernschild farm was designated a “Centennial Farm” during the American Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. The program recognized farms that had been operated by the same family for over 100 years.

The area now known as Defiance came under European control in 1682, when French explorers laid claim to the entire Mississippi Valley. The French did little to develop the Missouri region, and in 1762, turned it over to their ally, Spain. Spain developed a few outposts during the American Revolution but did not attempt to create settlements. Instead, they granted free land to those that wished to develop the area. Daniel Boone was one of the earliest and most well known settlers of the Defiance area.

Born on November 2, 1734 in Penn-sylvania, Daniel Boone was the 6th of 11 children born to Squire and Sarah Boone. In 1750, at the age of 15, Daniel and his family

moved to the backwoods of North Carolina. As he became older, he started making his living by hunting. In 1756, at the age of 21, Daniel married his wife Rebecca. Through

the years, Daniel and Rebecca had 10 children, 7 surviving to adulthood and marrying.

By 1765 the population of the Yadkin Valley in North Carolina had expanded to the point where hunting had be-come difficult. After a hunting trip to Kentucky with a friend

in 1769, Daniel was impressed with this new land of plentiful game. In 1773 he set off for Kentucky in an attempt to settle, but the party of 5 families had to turn back after being attacked by Indians. Daniel lost his first-born son in this attack. A later attempt

was successful and in 1775 he established the town of Boonesborough.

By the late 1700’s Kentucky was also becoming heavily populated. In 1798 he sent his son Daniel Morgan Boone to check out the prospect of moving to the Upper Loui-siana area. Daniel Morgan returned with a letter from the Spanish Lt. Governor inviting Boone out and stating that he would be of-fered free grants of choice land if he were to bring people with him. By 1799, just after his 65th birthday, Daniel and his entourage ar-rived at the Missouri River. Daniel and sever-al of his sons and daughters took out Spanish land grants in this area. Though Daniel had his own land, he did not live on it. Instead, he built cabins on each of his children’s prop-erties and traveled between them.

The property known today as The Daniel Boone Home was, actually, the home of his youngest son, Nathan. Because Nathan came to the area later than the rest of the family, there were no longer many land grants left when he arrived. He was lucky, however, and was able to obtain these 680 acres of land from a friend in exchange for a horse, a bridle and a saddle.

Daniel lived in this region longer than anywhere else in his lifetime. He was a well-respected man and in 1800 was appointed syndic of the Femme Osage District by the Spanish Governor, where he settled disputes among the settlers. After the Louisiana Pur-chase, he still served as a Justice of the Peace. He often held court under what became known as the ‘Judgment Tree’ which was located on Nathan’s property. In 1813, after Daniel’s wife Rebecca died, Nathan

made a room for his father on the first floor of the home. On September 26th, 1820, Daniel passed away in this room, at the age of 85 years old.

The home has had various owners since Nathan. In 1925 it was purchased by the pres-ervation-minded Colonel Francis Curlee family and wonderfully restored. The Andrae family owned the property for nearly forty years, and in 1998 they donated it to Lindenwood University, where it has since been used for educational purposes and is open to the public.

The property is now known as The Historic Daniel Boone Home & Heritage Center. Since Lindenwood’s ownership, over a dozen buildings dating back to the 1800’s have been brought in from within 50 miles of the site to create a village that helps represent what pioneer life might have been like during Daniel Boone’s era.

In the 1800’s, churches were an important part of the community, just as they are, today.

The first settlers to arrive to this area of St. Charles County, in 1839, were Lutherans from Melle, Germany. They named their new settlement ‘New Melle’.

In the 1860’s, German Methodists followed and began forming a congregation of their own. In 1869, the Peniel Church purchased property from John and Cath-erine Welker to be used as a cemetery for its members. At this time the congregation held its services in a building that stood just north of the present cemetery. In early 1878, they purchased a tract of land from Conrad and Anna Weinrich for the sum of $100 to build a new church. The brick Methodist church was built with bricks that cost $1,700 and that were made in New Melle by Sam Stalhuth. In 1904, William Brauckesieker and his sons

built the bell tower and a 42-inch Blymes Bell was ordered from The Cincinnati Bell Foundry.

Though the Methodists were an active congregation, they never were large in number. Seldom, if ever, did the congrega-tion number 100 members. As years passed, children moved away, the older members were no longer able to attend services, and membership declined. As a result, in 1960 the New Melle Methodist Church was sold to the Louisiana Development Board, South Baptist Convention.

In 1971, the Church was purchased by Ernie Arteaga. During the next few years

Ernie made repairs, built a garage and a living area, and added a courtyard. He began living there in 1977. In 1990, Ernie re-met and mar-ried Diane, a girl that he had previously dated in high school. After their marriage, they began renovations to incorporate the church into a Family Room for their home. As a commercial interior design architect that had designed high-end department stores, Ernie

had developed an interest in architectural salvage and had begun collecting pieces of interest, through the years, which they were able to incorporate into their home. With both Diane’s and Ernie’s vision, old doors and millwork were incorporated as well as mirrors that had previously adorned depart-ment store dressing rooms.

The loft was extended and a curved stairway was installed, made from architec-turally salvaged spindles and posts. A beauti-ful large chandelier that had once illuminated a Scruggs, Vanderboort & Barney Depart-ment Store was added. And Ernie customized a gorgeous white marble fireplace mantle from Paris that dates back to 1711 to make it fit the dimensions needed for the room. European antiques were acquired to add the finishing touch to the new renovation.

In 1996, because of their love and knowledge of European antiques, the Artea-gas opened an Antique Store that was located next to the current City Hall. When their business grew and they needed more space, they turned the garage next-door to the church into their new Shop, which opened in

In addition to offering lunch, the Tea Room also hosted rehearsal dinners and receptions. And wedding photos were taken on the curved stairway in the Arteaga’s Church-Home.

In 2008 the Antique Store and Tea Room were closed. Since their retirement, the Arteaga’s continue to call the old Meth-odist Church their home. And the Antique Store-Tea Room building, next door, is the contemporary artist gallery of Fraser Leonard.
