Fr. Bob’s Briefs

In the Gospel this Sunday, we hear our Lord instruct His disciples to be vigilant and active. Jesus tells the parable of the prudent and wise stewards, who are waiting and ready for the master to return, even into the late periods of the night, like this painting of a wom-an waiting in a window at night with her lamp lit brightly. In the Gospel, we are instructed to “light our lamps” and be vigilant. In the original Greek version, the Greek word is luxnos. Luxnos is commonly understood to mean a lamp, but it is a basic meaning is light. It is from this word that we get our Latin word lux for light. The Greek word luxnos has its origin in an adjective in the Greek language leukos. Leukos in Greek means “white, bright, or bril-

liant.” So, in today’s Gospel, Jesus isn’t talking about lighting a literal lamp, a porta-ble object that we hold in our hands or place on a stand. Rather, Jesus is talking about light, and keeping that light burning brightly, brilliantly.

Our Lord is telling us today to keep our light burning as brightly and bril-liantly as possible. This light that we are to keep burning brightly is the light of Christ that we all received at Baptism. At Baptism, the priest or deacon instructs the parents and godparents, “Receive the light of Christ. Parents and Godparents, this light is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly. This child of yours has been en-lightened by Christ. He/she is to walk always as a child of the light. May he/she keep the flame of faith alive in his/her heart. When the Lord comes, may he/she go out to meet Him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom.” The real test comes after Baptism. Do we really try to keep the light of Christ burning brightly in our words and actions when we are 5, 15, 25, 35, 55, 65, 85 years old? It looks nice to light the candle and receive it during the Baptismal ceremony. Sure, the pic-tures in the album look pretty, but do we live this baptismal promise afterwards in our life? How well are we taking care of the light of Christ that we received at our Baptism? The Lord calls all baptized Christians to be like a white light shining brightly, brilliantly against the darkness. Is our light shining as we wait for the Lord?

We have gathered more than $543,000 is generous pledge commitments from 231 families of our parish towards our To Teach Who Christ Is campaign. As families make payments on their pledges, we will have money in our parish account to make repairs and improvements in the parish. As you may recall, one of the goals of our To Teach Who Christ Is campaign is to make improvements for parishioner safety and parish renewal. I am proud to announce the com-pletion of our first To Teach Who Christ Is parish project! Last week, we completed a new entrance way to the school’s eastern entrance. The prior condition of the east side entrance was very poor and unsafe. The concrete in front of this entrance was full of many holes of various sizes and depths, making the walking surface uneven and unstable. These holes and rough, crumbling uneven surface area made entering and exiting the building very hazardous. In addition, the old entrance had a one step landing. This one step was precarious for people and made entrance/exit of the building dif-ficult for older people, people with walkers, wheelchairs, delivery carts, rolling bags, etc.

In order to rectify these prob-lems, we hired Paul Lally’s Ma-sonry to fix this entrance way. I asked him to remove the old damaged concrete and to make a gentle sloping ramp up from ground level to the level of the one step landing. He also sug-gested raising the level of the corner area to the left of the door-way to prevent water from pool-ing there as it had done previous-ly, and causing damage to the concrete. A sloping angle would aid the water to run off. The pic-ture to the left shows the com-pleted project and new east side entrance of the school. You are welcome to go and see the new entrance way yourself in person. This new east side entrance way truly improves our parishioners’ safety and adds to our parish’s

renewal. Such improvements are made possible through your contributions to the capital campaign. Please remember to fulfill your pledges so that we may continue to make future repairs and improvements.

Please pray for all Christians who are persecuted for the faith around the world. May our Blessed Mother Mary, Undoer of Knots, help us with her maternal care and may our patron St. Joseph pray for us.

Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Poprosiliśmy o pomoc kamieniarza, Paula Lally'ego. Poprosiłem go usunięcie popękanego chodnika i wzniesienie podjazdu do wysokości tego jednego schodka. Zachęcam wszystkich do pójścia i zobaczenia efektów osobiście.

Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!
