AMORIS LÆTITIA ON LOVE IN THE FAMILY FROM THE HOLY FATHER, FRANCIS

98. It is important for Christians to show their love by the way they treat family members who are less knowledgeable about the faith, weak or less sure in their convictions. At times the opposite occurs: the supposedly mature believers within the family can become unbearably arrogant. Love, on the other hand, is marked by humility; if we are to understand, forgive and serve others from the heart, our pride has to be healed and our humility must increase. Jesus told his disciples that in a world where power prevails, each tries to dominate the other, but “it shall not be so among you” (Mt 20:26). The inner logic of Christian love is not about importance and power; rather, “whoever would be first among you must be your ser-vant” (Mt 20:27). In family life, the logic of domination and competition about who is the most intelligent or powerful destroys love. Saint Peter’s admonition also applies to the family: “Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility towards one another, for ‘God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble’” (1 Peter 5:5).

Assumption of Mary: Mass will be held for the Feast of the Assumption on Monday, August 15th, at 6:30pm. After Mass will be our Parish cookout. St. Joseph provides BBQ, please sign up so that we will know how many to prepare for and bring some chips, soda or side if you can. Please bring folding chairs.

Studying the Catholic Faith and or joining the Church: This process is for all Adults (17+) and families who want to study the Catholic faith and are open to God’s invitation to full membership in the Church, and for those who are returning to the Church. The first sessions are make up what is called the Stage of Inquiry.

OUR FATHER IN FAITH

The Letter to the Hebrews today sings a hymn of praise to Abraham and to his faith, upon which are founded the re-ligions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Abraham is called “father” in faith by more people on earth than any-body else, numerous as the sands of the seashore or the stars of the heavens. Hebrews tells us it was this foundational faith that led Abraham to obey God’s call when he heard it, though he was called to journey to a land he did not know and told he would father a mighty race through a marriage he thought was barren. But Abraham’s faith, the author of He-brews tells us, was his realization of what he hoped for, and the evidence of what he could not see. How often are we, in simple daily events of our own Christian vocation, called to an unfamiliar place or told we are to do something we do not believe we can? How fortunate we are to have Father Abra-ham as our guide and example!
