FROM THE PAROCHIAL VICAR, FR. PEDRO MERCADO JR.
Why Is August 15th a Holy Day of Obligation? In John 2:5 we read “Do whatever he tells you.” These are the words spoken by the Blessed Mother about her Son Jesus at the Wedding Feast of Cana. She did not seek her own will but the will of her Son, and she encourages us to do the same. She is a shining example of how to live out the Christian faith. She always trusted in the Lord and did His will, even when it seemed an impossible task. The Virgin Mary was born without sin and served as God’s instrument to bring the Savior into the world in human form, and she always remained in a state of grace. So for centuries many followers of Jesus have believed that His Blessed Mother, at the
end of her life on earth, was assumed into heaven body and soul. Here are some historical quotes: “According to St. John of Damascus, at the Council of Chalcedon in 451 AD, Roman Emperor Marcian requested the body of Mary, Mother of God. St. Juvenal, the Bishop of Jerusalem, replied that “Mary died in the presence of all the Apostles, but that her tomb, when opened upon the request of St. Thomas, was found empty; wherefrom the Apostles concluded that the body was taken up to heaven,’”(Adelaida Mena, The History of the Assumption and Why It Is a Holy Day of Obligation,2017). Additionally, in Munificentissimus Deus, defining the dogma of the Assumption, Pope Piux XII states “St. John Damascene, an outstanding herald of this traditional truth, spoke out with powerful eloquence when he compared the bodily Assumption of the loving Mother of God with her other prerogatives and privileges. ‘It was fitting that she, who had kept her virginity intact in childbirth, should keep her own body free from all corruption even after death… and that she should be honored by every creature as the Mother and as the handmaid of God." (Munificentissimus Deus,17). This feast is important not only because Mary is the Mother of God or that she always said yes to the Lord or that she remained in grace all her life, but also because it reminds us of our goal, which is to live forever in heaven as members of God’s family. However, it is imperative to follow the words of our Blessed Mother, to “Do whatever he tells you.” Since August 15th is a Holy Day of Obligation in our Catholic faith, all Catholics are bound to attend Mass on that day or the Vigil Mass the evening before. To make it more convenient for the faithful to attend this Mass, we will have the Vigil Mass of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Tuesday, August 14 at 6:00 p.m. and we will also have the regular scheduled masses on Wednesday, August 15 at 7:00 a.m. and at 6:00 p.m. There will also be an extra Mass on August 15th at 12:05 pm. Let us continue to pray for one another and to ask for the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary.

PARISH NEWS
Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members
of our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and
physical suffering may they find consolation in your healing
presence. Show your mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make
broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May these special
people find lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking
you for all your gifts. We ask this through Lord Jesus who healed
those who believed. Amen

DEL VICARIO PARROQUIAL, P. PEDRO MERCADO JR.
Santo Tomas More
