MILWAUKEE ― Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki released the following statement regarding

the shooting that occurred in Kenosha on August 23, 2020.

It is with a heavy heart that I received the news about the shooting last night in Kenosha.

While many of the details of this shooting are unknown to us, the general public, it is not

difficult to imagine the pain, fear and anger felt by all who were present. I pray for healing

for Jacob Blake and for comfort for his family and loved ones.

I also pray for peace in Kenosha, as the situation remains volatile in the wake of this shoot-

ing. Violence can never be the means to attain peace and justice. The Church stands as a

beacon of hope. The sins of violence, injustice, racism and hatred must be purged from our

communities with acts of mercy, with the protection and care for the dignity of every human

person, with respect for the common good, and with an unwavering pursuit of equality and

peace. Together, let us pray to God for peace, justice, mercy and protection for every human

being.

COMUNION ESPIRITUAL

Creo, Jesús mío, que estás verdaderamente

presente ahora y siempre porque con

el Padre y el Espíritu Santo eres Dios,

y Dios está por todos lados en todo momento.

Pero por tu grandeza

y los límites de mis cinco sentidos

no puedo siempre reconocer

y sentir tu presencia.

Necesito señales que me hagan sentir

tu presencia.

Y la señal más poderosa para mi

es el momento en que comulgo,

cuando recibo tu Cuerpo y Sangre en Comunión.

Pero no puedo recibir Comunión en este

momento por la Pandemia que estamos

sufriendo. Por eso te pido que me ayudes

a sentir más profundamente en este momento

de Comunión espiritual

– y, por favor en otros minutos --

tu presencia, tu amor, tu apoyo

en mis dificultades y tentaciones,

tu perdón de mis fallas.

Y ahora, como si ya te hubiera recibido,

me uno y me abrazo todo a ti.

No permitas, Señor, que jamás me separe de ti.

Anima Christi Alma de Cristo, santifícame.

Cuerpo de Cristo, sálvame.

Sangre de Cristo, embriágame.

Agua del costado de Cristo, lávame.

Pasión de Cristo, confórtame.

An Act of

Spiritual Communion My Jesus,

I believe that you are truly present

with me always,

for with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

you are God, present everywhere

at every moment.

But because of your greatness

and the limits of these five senses I have,

I need some signs of your presence

in order to sense it.

The most powerful sign of your presence for me

is the moment I receive you

your Body and Blood in Holy Communion.

I cannot receive you that way now because of this

pandemic, so I ask you to help me in this moment

of spiritual Communion

– and please in other moments as well –

to feel your presence, your love,

your forgiveness of my failings,

your support in my difficulties, and temptations.

I embrace you as if I had just received you

sacramentally

and unite myself wholly to you.

Never let me be separated from you.

Anima Christi Soul of Christ, sanctify me.

Body of Christ, save me.

Blood of Christ, fill all my veins.

Water from the side of Christ, wash out my stains.

Passion of Christ, my comfort be.

Good Jesus, listen to me.

In Thy wounds, I fain would hide,

Never to be parted from Thy side.

Guard me, should the foe assail me.

Call me when my life shall fail me.

Bid me come to Thee above,

Jesus began to show his disciples

He turned and said to Peter,

“Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me.

You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do."

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny

himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,

but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?

Or what can one give in exchange for his life?

For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his

Father’s glory,

and then he will repay all according to his conduct.”

En aquel tiempo, comenzó Jesús a anunciar a sus

discípulos que tenía que ir a Jerusalén para padecer

allí mucho de parte de los ancianos, de los sumos

sacerdotes y de los escribas; que tenía que ser

condenado a muerte y resucitar al tercer día.

Pedro se lo llevó aparte y trató de disuadirlo,

diciéndole:

“No lo permita Dios, Señor; eso no te puede suceder a

ti”.

Pero Jesús se volvió a Pedro y le dijo:

“¡Apártate de mí, Satanás, y no intentes hacerme

tropezar en mi camino, porque tu modo de pensar

no es el de Dios, sino el de los hombres!”

Luego Jesús dijo a sus discípulos:

“El que quiera venir conmigo, que renuncie a sí

mismo, que tome su cruz y me siga. Pues el que

quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; pero el que pierda

su vida por mí, la encontrará. ¿De qué le sirve a uno

ganar el mundo entero, si pierde su vida?

¿Y qué podrá dar uno a cambio para recobrarla?

Porque el Hijo del hombre ha de venir rodeado de la

gloria de su Padre, en compañía de sus ángeles,

y entonces le dará a cada uno lo que merecen sus

obras’’.

I came to you in weakness and fear and much

trembling, and my message and my proclamation

were not with persuasive words of wisdom,

but with a demonstration of spirit and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom

but on the power of God.

LUKE 4:16-30 reading from the holy

Gospel according to Luke

Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had grown up,

and went according to his custom

into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the

prophet Isaiah.

He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it

was written:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the

attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the

synagogue looked intently at him.

He said to them, “Today this Scripture passage is

fulfilled in your hearing.”

And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came

from his mouth.

They also asked, “Is this not the son of Joseph?”

He said to them, “Surely you will quote me this

proverb, ‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say, ‘Do here

in your native place the things that we heard were

done in Capernaum.’” And he said,

“Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his

own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many

widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky

was closed for three and a half years and a severe

famine spread over the entire land.

It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only

to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the

time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was

cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”

When the people in the synagogue heard this,

they were all filled with fury.

They rose up, drove him out of the town,

and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down

headlong.

But he passed through the midst of them and went

away.

EVANGELIO Lucas (4,16-30) Lectura del santo Evangelio

En aquel tiempo, Jesús fue a Nazaret, donde se había

criado. Entró en la sinagoga, como era su costumbre

hacerlo los sábados, y se levantó para hacer la lectura.

Se le dio el volumen del profeta Isaías, lo desenrolló y

encontró el pasaje en que estaba escrito: El Espíritu

del Señor está sobre mí, porque me ha ungido para

llevar a los pobres la buena nueva, para anunciar la

liberación a los cautivos y la curación a los ciegos,

para dar libertad a los oprimidos y proclamar el año

de gracia del Señor.

Enrolló el volumen, lo devolvió al encargado y se

sentó. Los ojos de todos los asistentes a la sinagoga

estaban fijos en él. Entonces comenzó a hablar,

diciendo: “Hoy mismo se ha cumplido este pasaje de

la Escritura, que ustedes acaban de oír”.

Todos le daban su aprobación y admiraban la sabidu-

ría de las palabras que salían de sus labios,

y se preguntaban: “¿No es éste el hijo de José?”

Jesús les dijo: “Seguramente me dirán aquel refrán:

‘Médico, cúrate a ti mismo, y haz aquí, en tu propia

tierra, todos esos prodigios que hemos oído que has

hecho en Cafarnaúm’ ”.

Y añadió: “Yo les aseguro que nadie es profeta en su

tierra. Había ciertamente en Israel muchas viudas en

los tiempos de Elías, cuando faltó la lluvia durante

tres años y medio, y hubo un hambre terrible en todo

el país; sin embargo, a ninguna de ellas fue enviado

Elías, sino a una viuda que vivía en Sarepta, ciudad de

Sidón. Había muchos leprosos en Israel, en tiempos

del profeta Eliseo; sin embargo, ninguno de ellos fue

curado sino Naamán, que era de Siria”.

Al oír esto, todos los que estaban en la sinagoga

the Corinthians

Brothers and sisters:

The Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of

God. Among men, who knows what pertains to the

man except his spirit that is within?

Similarly, no one knows what pertains to God except

the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of

the world but the Spirit who is from God,

so that we may understand the things freely given

us by God.

And we speak about them not with words taught by

human wisdom, but with words taught by the Spirit,

describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms.

Now the natural man does not accept what pertains

to the Spirit of God, for to him it is foolishness, and

he cannot understand it,

because it is judged spiritually.

The one who is spiritual, however,

can judge everything but is not subject to judgment

by anyone.

For “who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to

counsel him?” But we have the mind of Christ..


RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 145:8-9, 10-11, 12-13AB, 13CD-14

OUR RESPONSE IS:

R. The Lord is just in all his ways.

The LORD is gracious and merciful,

slow to anger and of great kindness.

and compassionate toward all his works.

In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of

an unclean demon,

and he cried out in a loud voice,

“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?

Have you come to destroy us?

I know who you are–the Holy One of God!”

Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of

him!”

Then the demon threw the man down in front of

them and came out of him without doing him any

harm.

They were all amazed and said to one another,

“What is there about his word?

For with authority and power he commands

the unclean spirits, and they come out.”

And news of him spread everywhere

PRIMERA LECTURA Lectura de la primera carta del apóstol san Pablo a los Corintios (1 Cor 2, 10-16 )

Hermanos: El Espíritu conoce perfectamente todo,

hasta lo más profundo de Dios. En efecto,

¿quién conoce lo que hay en el hombre,

sino el espíritu del hombre, que está dentro de él?

Del mismo modo, nadie conoce lo que hay en Dios,

sino el Espíritu de Dios. Nosotros no hemos recibido

el espíritu del mundo, sino el Espíritu que procede de

Dios, para que conozcamos las gracias que Dios nos

ha otorgado. De estas gracias hablamos,

no con palabras aprendidas de la sabiduría humana,

sino aprendidas del Espíritu y con las cuales expresa-

mos realidades espirituales en términos espirituales.

El hombre, con su sola inteligencia,

no puede comprender las cosas del Espíritu de Dios,

porque para él son una locura; no las puede entender

porque son cosas que sólo se comprenden a la luz

del Espíritu. Pero el hombre iluminado por el Espíritu

puede juzgar correctamente todas las cosas,

y nadie que no tenga el Espíritu lo puede juzgar

correctamente a él. Por eso dice la Escritura:

¿Quién ha entendido el modo de pensar del Señor,

como para que pueda darle lecciones? Pues bien,

nosotros poseemos el modo de pensar de Cristo.

Había en la sinagoga un hombre que tenía un demo-

nio inmundo y se puso a gritar muy fuerte: “¡Déjanos!

¿Por qué te metes con nosotros, Jesús nazareno?

¿Has venido a destruirnos? Sé que tú eres el Santo de

Dios”.

Pero Jesús le ordenó: “Cállate y sal de ese hombre”.

Entonces el demonio tiró al hombre por tierra, en

medio de la gente, y salió de él sin hacerle daño.

tendrá su palabra? Porque da órdenes con autoridad

y fuerza a los espíritus inmundos y éstos se salen”.

While there is jealousy and rivalry among you,

are you not of the flesh, and walking

according to the manner of man?

Whenever someone says, “I belong to Paul,”

and another,

“I belong to Apollos,” are you not merely men?

What is Apollos, after all, and what is Paul?

Ministers through whom you became believers,

just as the Lord assigned each one.

I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the

who waters is anything,

At sunset, all who had people sick with various

diseases brought them to him.

He laid his hands on each of them and cured them.

And demons also came out from many, shouting,

“You are the Son of God.”

But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak

because they knew that he was the Christ.

At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place.

The crowds went looking for him, and when they

came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving

them.

But he said to them, “To the other towns also

I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of

God, because for this purpose I have been sent.”

And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

PRIMERA LECTURA Lectura de la primera carta del apóstol san Pablo a los Corintios (1 Cor 3, 1-9 ) Hermanos: Anteriormente no pude hablarles

como a hombres movidos por el Espíritu Santo,

sino como a individuos sujetos a sus pasiones.

Como a cristianos todavía niños, les dí leche y

no alimento sólido, pues entonces no lo podían

soportar. Pero ni aun ahora pueden soportarlo,

pues sus pasiones los siguen dominando. Porque,

mientras haya entre ustedes envidias y discordias, ¿no es cierto que siguen sujetos a sus pasiones y

viviendo en un nivel exclusivamente humano?

Cuando uno dice: “Yo soy de Pablo”, “Yo soy de

Apolo”, ¿no proceden ustedes de un modo mera-

mente humano? En realidad, ¿quién es Apolo y

quién es Pablo? Solamente somos servidores,

por medio de los cuales ustedes llegaron a la fe, y cada uno de nosotros hizo lo que el Señor le

encomendó. Yo planté, Apolo regó, pero fue Dios

quien hizo crecer. De modo que ni el que planta

ni el que riega tienen importancia, sino sólo Dios,

que es quien hace crecer. El que planta y el que

riega trabajan para lo mismo, si bien cada uno

recibirá el salario conforme a su propio trabajo.

Así pues, nosotros somos colaboradores de Dios y ustedes son el campo de Dios, la casa que Dios

edifica.

ella, mandó con energía a la fiebre, y la fiebre

desapareció. Ella se levantó enseguida y se puso

a servirles.

Al meterse el sol, todos los que tenían enfermos

se los llevaron a Jesús y él, imponiendo las manos

sobre cada uno, los fue curando de sus enferme-

dades. De muchos de ellos salían también demo-

nios que gritaban: “¡Tú eres el Hijo de Dios!”

Pero él les ordenaba enérgicamente que se

callaran, porque sabían que él era el Mesías.

Al día siguiente se fue a un lugar solitario y

la gente lo andaba buscando. Cuando lo encon-

traron, quisieron retenerlo, para que no se alejara

de ellos; pero él les dijo: “También tengo que

The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. So let no one boast about human beings, for everything belongs to you,

Paul or Apollos or Cephas,

or the world or life or death,

or the present or the future:

all belong to you, and you to Christ,

and Christ to God.

While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listen-

the fishermen had disembarked and were washing

their nets.

Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to

Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore.

Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the

boat.

After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,

“Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a

catch.”

Simon said in reply,

“Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the

nets.”

When they had done this, they caught a great num-

ber of fish and their nets were tearing.

They signaled to their partners in the other boat

to come to help them.

They came and filled both boats so that the boats

were in danger of sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of

Jesus and said,

“Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.”

For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made

seized him and all those with him,

and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee,

who were partners of Simon.

Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid;

from now on you will be catching men.”

When they brought their boats to the shore,

they left everything and followed him.

que la alejara un poco de tierra, y sentado en la barca,

enseñaba a la multitud.

Cuando acabó de hablar, dijo a Simón: “Lleva la barca

mar adentro y echen sus redes para pescar”. Simón

replicó: “Maestro, hemos trabajado toda la noche y no

hemos pescado nada; pero, confiado en tu palabra

echaré las redes”. Así lo hizo y cogieron tal cantidad

de pescados, que las redes se rompían.

Entonces hicieron señas a sus compañeros,

que estaban en la otra barca, para que vinieran a

ayudarlos. Vinieron ellos y llenaron tanto las dos

barcas, que casi se hundían.

Al ver esto, Simón Pedro se arrojó a los pies de Jesús

y le dijo: “¡Apártate de mí, Señor, porque soy un peca-

dor!” Porque tanto él como sus compañeros estaban

llenos de asombro, al ver la pesca que habían conse-

guido. Lo mismo les pasaba a Santiago y a Juan, hijos

de Zebedeo, que eran compañeros de Simón.

Entonces Jesús le dijo a Simón:

“No temas; desde ahora serás pescador de hombres”.

Luego llevaron las barcas a tierra, y dejándolo todo, lo

siguieron.

but I do not thereby stand acquitted;

the one who judges me is the Lord. Therefore, do not make any judgment before the

appointed time,

until the Lord comes,

for he will bring to light what is hidden in darkness

and will manifest the motives of our hearts,

and then everyone will receive praise from God.

Lectura de la primera carta de san Pablo a los Corintios Hermanos: Procuren que todos nos consideren como servidores de Cristo y administradores de los misterios de Dios. Ahora bien, lo que se busca en un administrador es que sea fiel. Por eso, lo que menos me preocupa es que me juzguen ustedes o un tribunal humano; pues ni siquiera yo me juzgo a mí mismo. Es cierto que mi conciencia no me reprocha nada, pero no por eso he sido declarado inocente. El Señor es quien habrá de juzgarme. Por lo tanto, no juzguen antes de tiempo; esperen a que venga el Señor. Entonces él sacará a la luz lo que está oculto en las tinieblas, pondrá al descubierto las intenciones del corazón y dará a cada uno la alabanza que merezca. Palabra de Dios.
