Next week’s readings - Lent: 2nd Sunday Genesis 12:1-4a Psalm 33 2 Timothy 1:8b-10 Matthew 17:1-9

As we began Liturgical Year A in Advent, we focused on the psalms of the season. For Lent, we’ll do the same. This week the response to the First Reading is taken from Psalm 51 with the refrain: Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned. Those few words can be a mantra for the whole season.

The verses the Lectionary for today present us with two truths: as human beings our relationship with God and others is marked by sin in some way, and God’s mercy is great enough to wipe out the effects of sin and wash away all guilt. On Ash Wednesday we smeared our foreheads with a sign of repentance and mortality. Throughout the Lenten season we are invited to take up the practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, to bring us back into right relationship with God and with each other. And yet, this focus on sin is not meant to overwhelm or discourage us. It is to highlight even more the compassionate and bountiful mercy of God who sent his Son to live among us and to feel hunger, fatigue, and even fear and despair in the garden of Gethsemane.

Secondary School Fund Drive March 2020 During Lent, we have our annual fund drive to support the secondary school, College St. Jean Baptiste (CSJB), named after SJB. Before CSJB was established in Baradères, Haiti, students had to travel to Port-au-Prince or Les Cayes to complete a high school education. This is similar to living in MD and traveling to upstate New York. Of course, this possibility only existed for students who had family or friends in the distant cities ready to house and feed them. The high school opened new and exciting opportunities to the people of Baradères. That high school was established with our donations and named for our own parish. We have helped build CSJB, repair leaky roofs, replace books ruined by storm waters, and provide limited solar power for the school. Walking great distances, over an hour each way to school, lack of roads, clean water, food at home, and electricity are just a few of the huge obstacles faced by the teachers and students at CSJB. We in the U.S. find it hard to even imagine. There are 365 students currently enrolled at CSJB, and they need your help. Please be as generous as you can. Envelopes will be in the pews during Lent. Thank you!

Share the Cross 2020 During our Lenten journey, we can make a difference by “sharing the cross of Christ" in a personal way. Below is a sample of suggestions. More information will be in the bulletin during Lent. Select the cross of your choice as part of your Lenten journey. The following CST principle lists ways in which we help those in need and build community at SJB. Each item is labeled on a colored cross and found on the wooden cross or in the basket at the foot of the altar in the Church. Items listed below with an * are new this year. Bring all donated items listed March 28 and 29 to the Gym. The crosses are color coded as follows: Call to Family & Community & Participation Yellow Care for God’s Creation Green Human Rights & Responsibilities Red Dignity of Life Orange Preferential Option for the Poor Blue Solidarity Purple As members of families and communities, how can we participate together in Christ’s mission? Call to Family & Community & Participation: Bring a pot of meatless soup, or a loaf of bread to share to the Friday Night Lenten Supper Talks held at 6:00 p.m. in the Lyon Center. Bring a non-perishable food item for donation to the food pantry. Participate in the Lenten Food Drive to benefit the St. Camillus’ Food Pantries. Bring non-perishable food items to

church on March 21/22. Help sort food donations of the ADW Share in Hope food drive Sunday, March 22, 9: 30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Kazista

St. John the Baptist Catholic Community 2020 LENTEN SUPPER TALKS

"I can see clearly now the Son has come!"

Come to the Lyon Center to observe the Lenten fast by sharing a simple supper of soup and bread. During the meal, we listen to a presentation on a topic related to the social concerns of our Church. Our goal this year is to help members identify ways to: • make room in our heart for those with whom you disagree; • recognize that each one of us is a beloved child of God; • respond in love to that reality find Christ in others; • encounter others with a tone and posture which affirms that I honor the dignity of others

and invites others to do the same; • presume others’ best intentions and listen to their stories with empathy; • strive to understand before seeking to be understood. 3/6 Fr. Jacek Orzechowski, OFM: “How do we honor the dignity of others?” “Conversation in the public square is all too often filled with personal attacks and words that assume the worst about those with whom we disagree. We are in need of healing in our families, communities, and country. Civilize It: Dignity Beyond the Debate is a call for Catholics to honor the human dignity of each person they encounter, whether it is online, at the dinner table, or in the pews next to them. Fr. Jacek will give a short presentation, share from his own experience and facilitate the group conversation. Fr. Jacek Orzechowski, OFM was born and grew up in Poland. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1988, he joined Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province and obtained a Master of Divinity degree from Washington Theological Union. After serving as a Parochial Vicar at St. Camillus Church in Silver Spring for the past nine years, Fr. Jacek now serves at Catholic Charities coordinating its Parish Community Organizing and Advocacy efforts.

Donations of bread and meatless soup are encouraged and appreciated! For more information, contact Cynthia Norris, 301-622-1122, or [email protected]

Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace: A Prayer for Civility Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where uncivil words prevail, show me how to model love.

Help me remember the God-given dignity of all and invite others to do the same.

Show me how to build bridges and not walls and see first what unites us rather than how we diverge.

Let me seek to understand before asking to be understood.

Give me a listening heart filled with empathy and compassion.

May I be clear in sharing my own position and respectful and civil in describing those of others.

Let me never tolerate hateful ideas.

May I invite all to charity and love.

Lord, help me to imitate your compassion and mercy.

Make me an instrument of your peace. Amen. Inspired by Nine Rules for Civility from the Catholic Tradition, Bishop Zubik

The Season of Lent † “The Light is on For You” Confessions available Wednesdays, 6:30 - 8 p.m. during Lent in the Church. † Lent is marked by prayer, fasting, and alms-giving. † Prayer is a very individual thing. There’s daily Mass, weekly Stations of the Cross, increased reading and reflection on the Bible, devotions like the Rosary, centered prayer, etc. There is no one way. † Fasting means: • on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent, we eat no

meat (for those ages 14 and up.) • on Ash Wednesday & Good Friday, the faithful

between the ages of 18 & 59 eat one main meal or two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal and nothing in between.

• at other times, it is common, though not required, to place other restrictions on ourselves as a means of “keeping” Lent.

Living the Gospel Series

Next session in the “Living the Gospel: Contemplation and Action” Adult Faith Formation Series (A Joint Venture of St. Camillus, Resurrection, and St. John the Baptist Catholic Churches) Workshop: Serving God’s People beyond

our Parish Boundaries Saturday, March 28: 10 a.m. – Noon Church of the Resurrection, Amadeo Room (faces Old Columbia Pike), Burtonsville, MD

All are invited to learn and share conversation about significant community outreach ministries at Church of the Resurrection, St. John the Baptist, and St. Camillus parishes. Parish representatives will explain how Jesus’ call to live the Gospel inspired efforts that witness to God’s love beyond immediate church membership. Particular focus will be on the far-reaching food pantry operation at St. Camillus, Church of the Resurrection’s highly successful homeless ministry, and a dynamic partnership between St. John the Baptist and St. Pierre’s in Baradères, Haiti.

Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. And look out for another’s interests, not just your own. -- Philippians 2:3-4

About the Living the Gospel Series This series of retreats, workshops and discussions brings the Gospel to bear on our daily lives. Using the teachings of Jesus, we personally and collectively ground ourselves in God, becoming more open to the ways God’s love can transform us. This year the series examines how Gospel teaching informs topics such as immigration, church and politics, service to all God’s people, and the papacy of Pope Francis. The series is based in the belief that living the contemplative dimension of the Gospel deepens understanding of what it means to be God’s light to the world. Led by staff and parishioners, except where noted.

Mystical Word

unrelated area. He calls these informational fields ‘morphogenetic’ fields because they are formative fields (morphe, or ‘form’) that carry information, not energy, and are available throughout time and space without any loss of intensity after they have been created…morphogenetic

fields direct other members of the species toward the same form or behavior…these fields of habitual patterns link all people. The more people have a habit or pattern— whether of knowledge, perception, or behavior— the stronger it is in the field, and the more easily it replicates in a new person (or entity)” (Ilia Delio). Morphogenetic fields reveal that the more people are present, the

more people will become present and therefore loving. Ilia Delio elaborates, “The discovery of morphogenetic fields can be used to describe how human consciousness is shared. A newly forming system ‘tunes into’ a previous system by having within it a ‘seed’ that resonates with a similar seed in the earlier form. As more and more people learn or do something, it becomes easier for others to learn or do it.” When each one of us can be present individually, more people will be able to become present. If each of us can be present in God this very moment, we can powerfully influence the whole human species. This is the power love as presence has.

It might seem like sitting in silence is a waste of time, but it is, perhaps, the most powerful act one can perform. We contribute to the evolution of all human consciousness and the transformation of society to the extent we realize our divinity, that God is our deepest self, that God’s nothingness and my nothingness is one nothingness.

At this time of division and rancor, space for contemplative silence is more important than ever to aid in the transformation of humanity. Starting March 9 and ending March 31, the parish will set aside space in the main church for contemplative silence. Come to the church any of the times listed below to pray in silence. Stay the whole time or for as long as you want. Mondays: 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.; Tuesdays: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.; Wednesdays: 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

If you ever have any comments regarding Mystical Word, you are most welcome to contact L. J. Milone.

A busy corporate lawyer complained to a hermit that he was too busy to pray for even five minutes. The hermit sat in silence for a while. The lawyer started to get impatient, and then downright angry that the hermit wasn’t replying. He had a meeting scheduled in a few minutes. Time is money, after all! With deep patience and gentleness, the hermit eventually said, “Then you should pray for three hours every single day.” This is typical wisdom from mystics and contemplatives. Prayer and contemplation are all the more necessary, and needed in greater lengths of time, for busy people.

Jesus frequently spends whole nights in prayer. He tells us to do the same: “Pray always without becoming weary.” Jesus wants us to spend a great deal of time in prayer. The amount of time we spend in prayer can point to how much we see it as a priority in our lives. It also allows for greater transformation of our lives. Most of all, though, more time in prayer means more time to know God. When the inevitable complaints come about busy-ness, no time, and the defeatist attitude of “I just can’t,” we have to ask ourselves some questions. What is taking up so much of my time? What are my priorities? What am I doing in the course of a day? Why am I resisting prayer? I know how I can take much more time for prayer in my own life. I can cut down my time watching TV and surfing the net. All too often, I find the problem is that I don’t want to pray.

Jesus would often withdraw into a deserted place to commune with God in silence. For Lent, St. John the Baptist is offering opportunities to join Jesus in contemplative silence. We are calling it “Contemplative Space.” It is a time of silence and stillness set aside for meditation and contemplation. We need space to gather in contemplative silence, time and space to sink into the incomprehensible mystery of God. A scientific idea can help us appreciate the power of contemplative silence practiced in a group: British biologist Rupert Sheldrake postulates a model of biological behavior called morphogenetic fields. He thinks “that repetitive behavior creates informational fields that can influence similar behavior in an

Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. For Lent, we offer opportunities to join Jesus in contemplative silence. Contemplative space is a time of silence and stillness set aside for meditation and contemplation.
