Curriculum Night: Curriculum Night is scheduled for Thursday, August 30, 2018, from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm.This is an event for the parents to visit the school, meet the staff, and learn about the teacher and curriculum forthe school year. The Bloomingdale Park District offers a Kids Curriculum Night with age appropriate games, activities, crafts, and more.
PTO Directory: The PTO will soon be putting together a directory for the upcoming school year. If you do notwish to have your directory information included, please notify the principal ([email protected]) in writingbefore Friday, August 31, 2018.
PTO Hot Lunch: The PTO will be offering Hot Lunch on Monday, Wednesday, & Friday this school year. Click here if you are interested in signing up for hot lunch. The first Hot Lunch day begins on Monday, September 10, 2018. The deadline to order Hot Lunch is Friday, August 31, 2018.
MAP Assessments: Students will participate in the MAP Assessment early in the school year. The MAP Assessment is a computer-based adaptive test, which means every student gets a unique set of test questions based on responses to previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions get harder. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions get easier. By the end of the assessment, students will answer about half the questions correctly. A “perfect score” on the MAP Assessment is 50%. Grade levels will communicate testing dates and times to parents. We use MAP results to measure student growth during the school year.
Spirit Day: Be BOLD and wear BLUE & GOLD on Friday, September 7, 2018. The first Friday of the month is always designated as Spirit Day. Help your class win the Spirit Eagle & earn a prize from the PTO.
CC! Recycling Assembly: All students will attend a Recycling Assembly on Wednesday, September 5, 2018, in the morning. Students will learn about landfills and get excited about solutions to solve our garbage problem through a “show & tell” of recycled and reused products. Participants will come away with a better understanding of the importance of, and differences between, Reduce-Reuse-Recycle.
CC! Waste Audit: The fifth grade students will participate in a Waste Audit on Friday, September 7, 2018. The waste audit is a problem-based learning activity in which students participate in a hands-on evaluation of the garbage problem in their school lunchroom. They witness, firsthand, lunchroom-generated waste and are asked to design creative solutions.

Erin’s Law-Kids in the Know
Dear Parents/Guardians of K-5th Grade Students:
Erin’s Law, named after sexual abuse survivor Erin Merryn, requires public schools to
provide a prevention-oriented sexual abuse program in grades Pre K-12. This year, all
students in District 13 will continue to implement Erin’s Law, utilizing an educational program
titled Kids in the Know. K-5th grade students will participate in this program in September
and October. Kids in the Know was developed in order to teach personal safety strategies to
children. The program’s purpose is to reduce child victimization by teaching lessons on
personal safety as well as sexual abuse safety. The lessons are presented using
age-appropriate content and language and are taught by me, the school social worker.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Kids in the Know program, please feel
free to contact me at 630-529-2223 or at [email protected]
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Jessica Kurpiel MSW, LSW

Develop your child's intellect through the fun game of chess! Current research has shown a strong link between chess and
academic performance in a variety of areas, including mathematics and language arts. Also, chess has been proven to enhance
motivation, concentration, focus, social skills, and creativity.
No previous knowledge of chess is necessary. Each class will consist of a fun, interactive teaching period and guided practice
time. Both new and returning participants are welcome and will get to the next level under the guidance of an experienced
Chess Scholars coach. There will also be a chess competition with prizes towards the end of the session! Each child will receive
a participation medal and a chess keychain.
