Men’s Soccer Falls 3-1 to Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa to

Kick Off 2014

Sarah Otteman, DC3 Sports Information Director

August 24, 2014

DODGE CITY, Kansas: Dodge City men's soccer fell 3-1 today after putting up a valiant effort, in 20 mph gusts of wind,

against the Mavericks of Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa.

The Mavs went up 3-0 in the first half, starting off the game a 40-yard screamer from the opposition in the fourth minute of

play.

"It's always a momentum-changer with an early score, you either build confidence or you lose it," stated head coach Tim

Romanello. "The wind was a significant opponent for us today too, but Northern Oklahoma's speed and their work rate in

transition really presented problems for us."

On the day, both sides managed to get seven shots off with the opposition landing three in the back of the net to the home

teams one.

In the 62nd

minute of play, sophomore Ben Carter ripped a free kick between the posts to give the Conqs the thought of

victory.

"After BC [Carter] scored off that set piece, you could see the boys really start to gain confidence in their play," continued

Romanello. "We began to create opportunities for ourselves by doing things that we needed to do before we conceded all of the

other three goals, applying immediate pressure on the ball, making runs off the ball and swinging in ball behind their defensive

line."

"We had a nice chance to draw within one goal off a corner kick that Ross Rodgers nearly missed."

Despite the team's best efforts including possessing five corner kicks to Northern Oklahoma's two, DC3 could not manage

another goal on the day.

"Our main problem right now is our ability to play quickly and simultaneously support our attack centrally and in our

width," said Romanello. "We don't take enough chances on goal when we should be taking shots."

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Rodela posted on save throughout the game while NOC-Tonkawa goalie put in three against the

Conqs.

Carter, Adrian Torres, Dylan Weeks and Shawn Watson each put one shot on goal with Watson posting two shots in 90

minutes.

"Game play this [upcoming] week is to really build off our second half, recalibrate our central and wide movement and take

risks from the front," finished Romanello.

Next week, the Conqs will head to Central Methodist to take on their JV squad at 7:30 p.m. before competing with

Westminster (Colorado) at 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 31.

Jones and Walker earn NOC player of the week honors

Mavericks Head Men’s Soccer Coach Michael DuRoy announces the Northern Oklahoma College men’s soccer player of

the week and Head Women’s Coach Josh Smith announces the women’s player of the week.

The women's player of the week is Becca Jones, a sophomore from Ponca City, and men’s player of the week is Anthony

Walker a sophomore from Jamaica.

“Becca has stepped up for the women’s soccer team this fall. She

was a big part if the Mavericks win over Dodge City, Sunday. She

has learned a new position and proven to be a valuable asset to our

program,” Smith said. This was the first match of the season and the

Lady Mavs are now 1-0.

“Anthony scored two goals and an assist in the Mavs season

opener 3-1 win over Dodge City,” DuRoy said. The Mavs record is 1-

0.

The Mavericks next home game against Allen Community College

is scheduled for Aug. 30, women at 2 p.m. and men at 4 p.m.

Women’s Soccer Drops Home Opener 2-1 to Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa Sarah Otteman, DC3 Sports Information Director — August 24, 2014

DODGE CITY, Kansas: Conquistador women's soccer put their first match in the books tonight after dropping 2-1 to

Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa.

Things were looking up in the early minutes as the Conqs started things off with a big goal by freshman Stephanie Yoder in

the 17th

minute.

"Any early goal is a momentum and confidence-builder," commented head coach Tim Romanello. "Steph needed that goal,

she has struggled with her confidence shooting on frame so for her to get that goal was good for her morale and a huge start to

the season and the game for our team."

"Unfortunately the score line did not stand at the final whistle."

DC3 held off the opposition throughout the first half until goalie Elyssia Lucio came out to stop a ball, causing an injury and

giving the Mavericks a chance at the goal. A chance they took to the back of the net to tie things up with :18 seconds left in the

first half.

Both teams held each other off for the early second half minutes, but NOC-Tonkawa gained the advantage in the 65th

minute

when one of their own put another goal through the posts.

"Both our goalkeepers did well, especially behind a sick player [VanBuskirk] and another injured one [Allred]," continued

Romanello. "She was big for us. But that wasn't the momentum killer."

"We struggled mentally today, knowing what to do with the ball, off the ball."

Before Lucio left the game (at half) due to injury she put in three big league saves. After goalkeeper Eliani 'Eli' Bardi took

over the net, she garnered four saves for the Conqs in her 45 minutes played.

NOC-Tonkawa outshot DC3 18-3 during the match and owned corners 7-0 on the day, snagging the victory despite the

home team's seven saves.

"Northern Oklahoma are a strong side…they play well together with good chemistry and are very dynamic throughout each

of their positions"

Sophomore Kayla Turner put two shots in during her work without having one land between the posts.

For future games, "we really have to place emphasis on our ability to connect passes, movement off the ball and supporting

our attack," finished Romanello.

The Conqs will hit the road in the upcoming weekend to take on Central Methodist JV at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 29 before

challenging MCC-Blue River at 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 31.

NOC Women’s Team Ready To Get Going By DAVID MILLER, News Sports Editor — 8/21/2014

TONKAWA — Beginning his stint as Northern Oklahoma College women’s soccer coach, Josh Smith says he is excited

about the prospects of his team for 2014.

Smith, who has served as coach in Texas at Crandall High School and at Cedar Valley College, is taking over from Michael

DuRoy who served a couple of years as coach of both men’s and women’s teams at NOC.

DuRoy handed over the reins of the women’s team to Smith, but continues as head men’s coach.

“We have a lot of incoming talent and a strong returning corps,” Smith said. “We are playing really well. We have had good

sessions in August and we will continue to get better as we work on improving the areas that need some improvement.”

The Lady Mavs had a scrimmage at Winfield, Kan., earlier this week against Southwestern College and that went well for

NOC.

Eight sophomores and 13 freshmen make up the Northern roster, and Smith likes what he has seen out of that group so far.

His tri-captains promise to provide important leadership for the team.

They are Rikke Randrup of Denmark and Kaitlin Bell of Enid, both of whom made first team all-region last season, plus

Tina Rush of Ponca City, who didn’t see a lot of activity in 2013 due to injury, but who has come on quite strong in the

preseason.

“I expect the three to be very important players for us,” Smith said.

Randrup is a midfielder-forward, Bell is a midfielder-defender and Rush is listed as a forward for the Lady Mavs.

It hasn’t been that long ago, in 2012 that Northern’s women’s team competed in the National Tournament which was played

in Florida.

Smith didn’t predict a return to the national stage, but he did express strong optimism.

“I am very hopeful that we will have a strong season,” he said.

The Lady Mavs get down to official business on Saturday as they travel to Dodge City, Kan., for a 4 p.m. match there. The

first home appearance will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 27 when Barton County (Kan.) will visit the NOC soccer field for a 2 p.m. game.

On-field success breeds recruiting goods at NOC Posted on Aug 27, 2014, by Bruce Campbell, Enid News & Eagle

ENID, Okla. — It took her a year, but Northern Oklahoma College Enid softball coach Jamie Roberts finally was able to

sign former Berryhill All-Stater Ashley Williams.

Williams impressed then-Purcell coach Roberts while at Berryhill, but chose to play basketball at Northeastern A&M.

She decided to transfer and play softball for the Lady Jets after averaging only 3.8 minutes a game with the Norsewomen,

who were eliminated by NOC Enid in the district semifinals.

“I should have picked it (softball) in the beginning,’’ Williams said. “That was what my mom was telling me out of high

school. Softball is my sport. I decided to change while I still could.’’

Williams, a shortstop and center fielder, is getting the rust off in the preseason. She hit .435 in making All-State at Berryhill.

“I’m still trying to get everything back,’’ she said. “I like it pretty well here.’’

Roberts said Williams gives the Jets a good bunter and slap hitter, something they were lacking in the school’s initial season.

Williams is a sophomore in the classroom, but since she didn’t play softball at NEO, will be a freshman in eligibility.

The Lady Jets landed another transfer in sophomore third baseman Annie Combs, formerly of Oklahoma Baptist. Combs

broke OBU school records with 58 RBI and 20 doubles.

Familiar face rejoining NOC Enid baseball Back for more - Posted: Sunday, August 24, 2014 12:11 am

NOC's Aaron McCandless connects on a double against Cowley College

Wednesday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

by Bruce Campbell ENID, Okla. — A familiar face could be the prize recruit for Northern Oklahoma

College Enid’s baseball team.

Aaron McCandless, who hit .311 with two homers and 26 RBI as a freshman two

years ago before sitting out last season with a quad injury, has decided to return to the

Jets for his sophomore redshirt season.

McCandless’ plans to play for ex-Jet assistant Ryan Bay at Northwestern Oklahoma

State changed when Bay resigned to become coach at NOC Tonkawa.

He wanted to come back and test the waters again and see if some other opportunities

open up,’’ said Jets assistant coach Scott Mansfield. “We’ll definitely benefit from that.’’

When you get a quality player for a third year, it’s huge,’’ said Jets head coach

Raydon Leaton.

McCandless is listed as a first baseman, but can play all the infield positions and

catch.

Wherever we play him, he’ll be successful,’’ Mansfield said.

he Jets, who reached the Division II Junior College World Series for the first time last season for the first time since 2002,

have added 22 players to join 18 players who are returning.

Hey did lose pitcher Scotty Harvill, who was 3-2 with a 4.95 ERA and 58 strikeouts and only 12 walks in 671⁄3 innings. He

is transferring to hometown NCAA Division II LSU-Shreveport.

It was hard for his family to come out here and see him,’’ Leaton said. “It’s closer to home and that’s understandable.’’

Right-hander Cooper Skluzacek, who pitched for the Enid Majors last summer, is the only new player with a local

connection.

He’s throwing strikes in the bullpen right now,’’ Mansfield said. “He’s been working hard and holding his own.’’

The new players by position include:

Pitchers — RHP Gunner Black, Stillwater; RHP Tyler Culver, Pawhuska; RHP Javier Eguia, Forney, Texas; RHP Zach

Guest, Collinsville; RHP Sam Kraybill, Stillwater; HRP Ryan LeMoine, Broken Arrow; RHP Dennis Sims, Varnum;

Skluzacek; LHP Cole Sparks, Bonham, Texas; RHP Caleb Sparks, Skiatook;

Catchers — Harrison Hull, Bremond, Texas; Reid Kjerstad, Amarillo, Texas Randal.

Infielders — 3B Anthony Alvarez, Broken Arrow; 2B Justin Brown, Broken Arrow; SS Ben Lewis, Fort Worth Brewer; SS

Andew Roth, Carrollton, Texas Hebron; 2B-OF Beau Srader, Shattuck; C-3B Jabe Thompson, Azle, Texas; RHP Logan

Wigley, Yukon.

Outfielders — Blake Biggs, Broken Arrow; Jake Perez, West Bend East, Wisc., (sophomore); Will Sprayberry, Moore.

“We got guys who can swing the bats, guys who can pitch and guys who can play good defense,’’ Mansfield said. “We got a lot

of talent and tools out there. I don’t know if one player stands out. Everybody is about on the same level right now.’’

Many of the recruits went to the NJCAA Division II World Series at David Allen Memorial Ballpark as spectators.

Besides McCandless, the Jets return six other starters or part-time starters — third baseman Nik Gifford (.337, two homers,

37 RBI); shortstop Nick Yoning (.343, 10 homers, 37 RBI); center fielder Patrick O’Toole (.290, 11 RBI); left fielder Korey

Floyd (.305, two homers and 12 RBI); and catchers Dillon Harp (.326, one homer, 29 RBI) and Lane Cobb (.227, 6 RBI).

“We’re going to be pretty strong up the middle,’’ Mansfield said.

Others back are pitchers Kaleb Allred, Austin Billiot, Nathan Boyd, Zach Bradford, J.D. Cameron, Ty Golay Devin Ring,

Austin Stewart and Dakota Wade; first baseman Trevor Hillhouse; shortstop Tate Stokes and outfielder Brett Harryman.

The Jets start their fall scrimmage season today against Oklahoma City Sandlot.

“The fall gives us a chance to evaluate players and look at different lineups,’’ Mansfield said. “We’re going to have a lot of

competition, which is good for the ballclub. Chemistry was a big key for us last year and we hope we can keep that up.’’

The Jets will work out until November when they will put away their bats and balls and concentrate in the weight room and

agility drills.

Fall schedule — Aug. 24, OKC Sandlot; Aug. 28, Dodge City, Kan., at Alva; Sept. 1, KC O’s; Sept. 9, Pratt, Kan.; Sept. 14,

at Connors; Sept. 19, Rose State; Sept. 20, OKC Fuel; Sept. 23, at Rose State; Sept.27, Tulsa Prospects; Sept. 29, at Hillsdale

Baptist; Oct. 3, Crowder, Seminole at Rose State; Oct. 6, at Pratt, Kan.; Oct. 9, Connors; Oct.10, at Oklahoma Christian; Oct.

Jennings seeking Health and Wellness Task Force members

“NOC has recently begun the process of creating an NOC Health and Wellness Taskforce. This taskforce would ideally be

comprised of faculty, staff, and administrators from each campus, and would support the college’s strategic goal to ‘Enhance the Quality of Life for our Students’ and our Co-Workers by fostering a culture of healthy living,” Bradley Jennings, NOC Enid

dean of students, said.

‘As we begin this process, I would like to invite those of you who are interested in serving on this committee to please email

me by the 1st of September,” Jennings said.

Online tutoring available An email was sent out to all NOC students to announce the availability of tutor.com, the online tutoring service NOC

subscribed to beginning in the fall 2014 semester. If you are interested in viewing a video for faculty, describing how the

service works, you can go to the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi5yckIodOo

NOC employees may run across students who are struggling in their classes and could help them by sharing the availability

of this service, linked through students’ Blackboard page. In addition to the online tutoring service, students can access
