Welcome to the Fair

Theme: The Donkey

The Saanich Fair is Western Canada’s oldest continuous agricultural Fair and is marking its 146th year in 2013.

This year’s theme is “The Donkey” and there will be plenty of them to learn about at the Fair.

The Fair provides a wonderful outing for all ages. Come on out and experience the country farm atmosphere.

There are multicultural experiences in the food on offer. There are many farm animals to see and rides available for the young and faint of heart.

Of course, there is a great deal of entertainment to amuse you and get your toes tapping. The Fair also has markets, exhibits and more!

This year, there is a full lineup of some 16 entertainers on stage. Some performers are coming back to the Fair again this year and there are plenty of newcomers to experience over the three days of the event.

Check out the KidZone, Farm Fun Passport for kids, Farm Games and three days of continuous horse shows. There will be cows, llamas, emus, goats, pigs, sheep, ducks, chickens, pheasants, rabbits, alpacas, donkeys and cavies for all to see.

Have trouble finding your car in the parking lot at the end of your stay? There will be farm signs posted to show you what area you are parked in.

May you have a wonderful stay at our event and plan to come back again.

Careful not the stare at the donkeys too long - those eyes will get ya.

Donkeys around the yard.Having fun at the Saanich Fair.

Donkeys are an easy going farm animal that are loving, inquisi-tive individuals.

They really like and are drawn to children. Donkeys range in height from miniatures to mammoths (horse size).

Their most common use is as someone’s pet but can also be ridden under saddle, driven in harness to a little cart, packed and taken on hikes, and used as guard animals with other livestock.

Come and meet these charming animals in the donkey section.

That 70’s Band

Bijoux Du Bayou

The AC/BC Dance Troupe is a part of a non-profit association called Angels Chopper Bicycle Club. The Troupe is a youth led group consisting of young artists from the ages of 11 - 20. Under the direction of Sophia Harrington, they meet every week on Sundays for two hours to work on choreography that they perform at various events around town. For more information about the group please visit our website: www.acbcbikes.com or email [email protected].

AC/BC Dance Troupe

Bijoux Du Bayou, since their beginnings over 15 years ago, have made it their mission to spread the good times or bon temps styles of Zydeco, Cajun, New Orleans and a few other rare genres that have been sorely neglected in Western Canada. When audiences experience their performances they come away with a smile on their faces and the question: “Why haven’t I been listening to this music before?” With as much authenticity and gusto as Canajun guys can deliver and with accordion honkin’, fiddle crankin, scrub board scrubbin’, drums, bass and guitar layin’ down the foundations, audiences find it hard to stay still. According to Jeff Weaver (CBC Victoria): “Hard to believe these guys didn’t grow up sucking crawfish on the shores of Lake Ponchartrain, Louisiana.”

Put On Your Dancing Shoes and Get Ready to ROCK !Re-live the best decade of guitar-driven hits with a complete '70s concert experience with That ‘70s Band.Turn back the clock and dance to the biggest hits of the era. Complete with wardrobe, full stage effects, and real 1970s guitars, That ‘70s Band accurately reproduces the sights and sounds of a classic rock concert everyone can enjoy! After 12 years on Vancouver Island, and voted winners of Monday Magazine’s Best Cover Band of the Year 2009, That ‘70s Band never fails to deliver a rockin’ show you won’t sit still to.

“Since I came to live on the Peninsula, one of the annual events which I have most enjoyed is the three day Saanich Fair. My children looked forward to it every year, loving the animal events and the exhibits. I think it is the emphasis on agriculture

and community involvement that makes it so special. The variety of activities, the competitions and the way the event represents the end of summer calls visitors from all over the region. Many North Saanich residents participate in the baking, preserving, food and fl ower growing competitions. Our children ride horses and show livestock. I very much look forward to seeing the crowds again this year, enjoying the local harvest and greeting one another during these wonderful days.” Alice Finall

Fine Spirits is a six-piece band from Victoria, covering lively, danceable music ranging from current and classic rock and pop to funk, R&B and jazz. Lead singer and guitarist Dave Preston is accompanied by Lesley Preston on bass and harmony vocals, Vince Pollitt on horns, Kevin Kotorinski on keyboards, harmonica and vocals, Ken Champoux on lead guitar and T. W. Tobin on drums. Fine Spirits promise fun and energetic music to suit any occasion, guaranteed to get you moving and grooving to familiar hits, plus a few surprises. Look for them on Facebook and Soundcloud.

Clogging is a true North American folk dance whose roots come from the combined dances of the Irish, English, Scottish, Dutch and Germans who settled in the Appalachian mountains in the mid 1700s. Russian gypsies and Africans passing through the area, as well as the Cherokee Indians who lived there, also influenced the dance. Add a little Irish step dancing, tap, jazz and hip-hop and you have modern clogging. The word “clog” has nothing to do with wooden shoes, but is a Gaelic term meaning “time” and clogging is dancing in which the heel is the time-keeper. The special taps worn on the dancers shoes emphasise the rhythm and give the dance its distinctive sound.Although clogging is traditionally performed to bluegrass and country-western music, modern cloggers have expanded their repertoires to include music from the ‘50s and ‘60s as well as modern country, pop and rap.In the Greater Victoria and Saanich Peninsula areas we have several recreational clogging clubs whose members, ages 6 to 82, dance once or twice a week. The dance season runs from September through June and includes lessons for beginners as well as progressively more challenging dance routines. The dancers may take part in the many weekend clogging workshops offered all over Canada and the United States, or may simply enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of their weekly dance classes. Dancing for the fun of it is what it’s all about!

Younger Than Yesterday

Shaky Ground

Shaky Ground is Victoria’s premiere dance band. For more than 20 years they have entertained audiences with their own unique blend of today’s hits and yesterday’s favourites. You’ll hear five decades of classic hits: rock, pop, R&B, country, blues, reggae … even disco! Last year they were chosen over every other band in Victoria to entertain the celebrities and VIPs at the after-party for the 25th anniversary David Foster Celebrity Weekend. Bring your dancing shoes!

Younger Than Yesterday is a ‘60s tribute band from Victoria. They’ve been together for four years and have played almost 200 shows. They play hits by bands like The Rolling Stones, The Monkees, The Who, The Kinks, CCR, The Beatles and more, in full costumes. You can see them every third weekend at Bartholomew’s Pub. Michael Wood Band

While fans are immediately struck by the relevance of the evocative lyrics, they are ultimately won over by Michael Wood Band’s attention to all the elements that make for great, classic sounding rock music. The live show is pure energy, with smouldering guitar leads, melodic rhythms, and a seriously infectious groove. Catchy guitar driven originals blend with classic and contemporary rock favourites for a seamless show. From Canada’s west coast, the four-piece features Michael Wood (vocals/guitar), Josh Weed (guitar/vocals), Jon Burgundy (bass/vocals), and Alex Campbell (drums/vocals). The band’s sound reflects multiple influences ranging from jazz to pop to classic rock, and diverse topics, such as the Arab Spring (Should We Be Afraid), over commercialism (End of the World) and finding your own path (I Think I’ll Just Go to Bed). MWB’s first album Occupy This was released in May 2012, and the band has since played everything from small charity shows to large festivals, including a performance at the Calgary Stampede. “It’s really great to see people responding so positively to our music.” says frontman Michael Wood. “People hear the songs and see our video for the single End of the World and are really excited to have us out to play. It’s been really encouraging.”One club owner raves: “We had an incredible response from the patrons and staff which all had nothing but great things to say. We even had a few members of some other bands that play our venue and they were blown away by their ability and diversity. Anytime they are coming through Calgary we would love to bring them back. We wish the Michael Wood Band the greatest success in the future!” Response from industry experts has also been positive. Recently MWB was selected as a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition from 20,000 entries worldwide, and nominated for two Vancouver Island Music Awards. Receiving radio play nationwide, MWB was voted New Artist of the Month on Ontario’s CKXS FM. Recorded at the Barn Recording Studio (Randy Bachman, Buffy Sainte-Marie) Occupy This continues to bring them new fans,

proving that the MWB are as dedicated to writing and recording great songs as they are to playing an incredible live show.

Aivia is an Alternative Rock group formed in February of 2012 with an enthralling live show that is sure to please crowds of all ages. They are the combination of two former Victoria bands who are longtime friends, but only newfound bandmates. Since forming, Aivia has seen success in playing in venues

ranging from community churches to pubs to even the all ages scene. Their long term goal of becoming recognized not only throughout Victoria but Canada itself may be a lofty one, but Aivia feels the strong combination of talent found throughout the members is a winning formula capable of achieving this goal.
