Nate Kalpin won the 2020 Allstate® Angler of the Years Series at Chaumont

Bay Day 1 with 20.21 lbs. Nate said, “What a great place to start the season. Chaumont Bay always has the potential to really show out. This year we caught it in a post spawn funk, where the bite seemed to be tough in the bay and the lake. I was only able to practice on 1 day, where I actually didn’t catch a single fish. I found an area that I saw them swimming, and where my non boater caught a few decent largemouth. We started there come tournament day, and I filled a quick limit of small Largemouth with a chatterbait. Felt good to wash the skunk off from the prior day. We decided it was unlikely we would milk that spot for 5 or 10 big Largemouth so I began to hit areas I fished in the past that we were unable to get to during practice. We made the move mid-morning and landed on a spot that had a nice drop-off to deep water and access to rock and grass. I started catching Smallmouth fairly quickly, and slowly culled each Largemouth in the well. My first two fish were cookie cutter 2.00 pounders, but the 3rd fish ended up being a new personal best of a 6.20 lb. giant. I followed that lunker up with another two 5-pound fish but couldn’t pull together that mega bag everyone always hope’s for. I only continued to catch the same size 2 pounders afterward. I caught a lot of fish and they all came from the same spot. It was the typical “video game” fishing, almost calling all the bites

after seeing them on the graph. I did not think I had enough to take the win, but sometimes I get lucky and pull it off, not complaining! Huge thanks to my non-boater Mark Saile for taking my sometimes-abusive direction on netting my fish, I can’t be held accountable for things I word vomit when there’s 5 pounders and 6 pounders on the line (good pun). You did an awesome job and appreciated the help and company on the three days we had on the boat together!”

Dave Livingston took 2nd place with 17.40 lbs. Dave said, “Wow, good thing we started practicing the Sunday before. I covered most of the lake areas including Henderson Bay, Stoney Island and the Gallou Islands, and the lake was definitely off and in post-spawn shutdown. Since the weather forecast didn’t look ideal, we (me and my partner Bob McEneaney) decided to concentrate our practices to the bay. Even then the areas were different from previous years. The good news is that we found many new areas and did it all without blowing an engine or going aground! Tournament day weather was better than expected, but still a little rough. It took a combination of largemouth and smallmouth spots to get a decent limit, but I had no thoughts that a weight of 17.40 lbs. would even be close to the top ten. So I went back to the hotel without even bothering to have a picture taken or watch the results. I though Steve was kidding when he called and said I ended up in second place. I guess it shows how tough the fishing really was for everyone. Many thanks to my partner Bob McEneaney, who kept me in relatively good spirits despite the fact that I was in a lot of pain during most of the practice and during the tournament. Getting old is only good for fine wines and senior discounts, and it’s never easy keeping up with all the talented fishermen in our club. Hats off to everyone that fished this very tough tournament.” Rod Brown finished in 3rd Place with 17.14 lbs. Rod said, “Day 1 caught 12 keepers the vast majority on a NED rig with a drop shot being my secondary lure. All my fish came in the 12’-15’ depth range. The morning was best with my bite tapering as the day advanced. I fished about 4 or 5 spots all with good rock. Vegetation was a nonstarter for this event for me. I had

Sean Simms as a non-boater for this day and having him along made for a great day on the water.”

Taking 5th in his first club tournament with 15.65 lbs. as Adam Furano. Adam said, “This was my first tournament with the club and my first real tournament in general. I had the pleasure to fish with Steve Levine who was great and took every opportunity to help guide me on the small things that matter like culling, keeping hooks sharp, and checking knots and line after each fish. Thanks Steve! We spent the day between a few spots in the bay in the roughly 10-20 ft range and although I tried some moving baits, slow on the bottom seemed to be what they were going for in those areas. Long casts and covering water were the plan and helped me meet my goal in just getting my limit my first time out. Thanks again to my boater for spending the time finding fish. Thanks again to Steve Levine, Dave Livingston, Rod Brown, and Bob McEneaney for the hospitality. Thank you also to Dom and Marie Cerasuolo for the amazing food!”

Mark Harold caught 14.51 lbs. for 6th Place. Mark caught all his fish out in the lake by marking the fish on his graph in 20 feet of water.

Matt Ferrante rounded out the Top Seven with14.24 lbs. Matt said, “I used spinner bait in weeds catching largemouth. Then drop shot points and shoals for smallmouth caught a lot of fish just not big ones. Day two went into the lake for half the day fishing shallow with a spy bait catching about six all about 2 lbs. fished shoals in the bay in the afternoon with a drop shot caught some small ones and a couple 4.00 lbs. smallmouth.”
