Out and about! Summertime is in full swing. River Bend residents have
many activities and adventures to choose from year round but, summer weather gives us opportunities to
plan fun outings and bus trips. In June we visited the Field of Dreams movie site. Our outing in July was to
see the “Hula Hoop Tree” in Amber, IA and lunch at Pizza Ranch. On August 20th we plan to travel to the National Farm Toy Museum in Dyersville, IA. While we
are out we will also make a stop for ice cream at Dairy Queen. It’s the perfect summertime treat! You can check out our activity calendar for more details on the fun we offer each day. www.riverbendal.com

Terry Sherman
Universal Worker
Terry joined our team at River Bend in September of 2007 as a part-time universal worker and about six months later she took on a full time position here. Terry and her family live in Onslow, IA. She has 3 children and 4 grand-children. Her favorite thing about working at River Bend is that the residents feel like family to her and make her feel loved as well. We enjoy Terry’s smile, dedication, and kind spirit she shows each and every day to the
residents at River Bend.

Learn about Happiness Happens Month
What makes you happy? Happiness Happens Month is
a whole month dedicated to celebrating what makes you happy. Based on the premise that happiness is
unlimited and contagious, sharing one’s happiness can
also bring a lot of joy in other people’s lives.
Even though Happiness Happens Month sounds silly,
it does have a very important purpose. “The month reminds us that happiness happens one small moment
at a time and it’s our job to recognize those moments when they happen. It reminds us that even small actions can boost our
happiness. It also reminds us that happiness is a personal experience and is
contagious.”
Happiness Happens Day encourages people to take stock of their lives and try to
do and think about things that make them happy and to share this joy with others. Start with doing something nice for yourself. Then, make someone else
happy by doing something nice for them. It can be something as simple as giving up your seat on the bus to someone else or volunteering your time. Studies have
found that volunteering your time not only helps bring joy in your life, but it
might also help you live longer. Be Happy!
Meet our new friend Bo!
Ed Recker, Cascade resident and generous volunteer, stopped by recently to introduce everyone at River Bend to Bo, his new therapy dog. They plan to come for monthly visits starting in August and we are excited. There are many physical, emotional, and psychological benefits of pet therapy for seniors. The ability to have something to pet or touch can result in lower blood pressure, normal heart rate and reduced stress. For dementia patients, animals can be soothing, especially to those who have dif-ficulty using language. Therapy animals are beneficial for seniors of any age range or health condition, whether they are depressed, chronically ill or have ongoing disabilities. The smiles the therapy animals bring are priceless. Pictured above from left to right:
