Mission Trip StoriesA group including Simple Matters board members and others closely involvedin Simple Matters returned from an incredibly meaningful and successfulmission trip to Honduras last Friday July 26 The 2019 team had 20 membersprimarily from across North Carolina representing 9 churches The teamparticipated in medical and optical clinics childrens activitiesconstruction ladiesrsquo Bible studies prayer walking youth ministry andevangelism We ministered to individuals through two churches in the capitalcity of Tegucigalpa and in two schoolsvillages in rural areas to the northeast ofthe city All these activities worked together to complement the ongoingmission that Mario and Keila engage in every day which is the main purpose ofour trips
There are so many stories to tell of mission adventures relationships nurturedand lives changed These stories will be told over the next few months ofnewsletter articles - building a pila (combination wash basin shower andtoilet) for a single father with five children childrens activities in which theylearned the meaning of the cross optical clinics where many people receivedtheir first pair of glasses and were able to see clearly for the first time But thefirst story to be told and the most time-sensitive begins with a very specialfriend to the Honduran people and to Simple Matters
As many of you know John Cook was the president of Simple Matters andspent many days in Honduras constructing pilas and loving children Sadly tous Jesus called him home last December and he was greatly missed on the2019 mission trip Unbeknownst to our team the youth of our partner churchin El Naranjaacutel (Iglesia Bautista Renacer del Naranjaacutel) had been working on aspecial project all year When we arrived for our ministry day last Wednesdaythey walked us to the John Cook Memorial Garden a moving tribute to their

A practical way you can honor John is through the John Cook Scholarship Fundadministered by Simple Matters Currently the Scholarship Fund is supportingIris in pursuing her post-secondary nursing degree Beginning in August wewill be sponsoring seven high school students who need funding to continuetheir high school education Schooling in El Naranjaacutel ends at eighth grade andin order to continue their education students need funds for transportationcosts to travel outside the village as well as supplies and uniforms During our ministry day in El Naranjaacutel after we prayer-walked visited homes in

the village and provided afternoon activities for ladies and children wegathered with the youth during their weekly discipleship meeting During thisgathering I met Ana a young girl who has graduated high school and wants tocontinue her schooling to obtain a degree in Information Technology She isjust waiting until the scholarship money is available for her to resume herstudies Simple Matters wants to help Ana and two other students to reachtheir goals but we are determined not to make a commitment until we cancommit to begin and finish the costs of their post-secondary education If weare to be able to fulfill this commitment we need ongoing donations to pay thecosts of their tuition and transportation costs for the entire time After initialstartup expenses that include vocational and psychological testing andpreparation in basic college skills the cost for tuition and transportation is only$160 per month a small percentage of tuition in the US Since Ana has finished school and isnrsquot employed while she waits for thescholarship money she has nothing to do during her days except watch TV andhang out with her friends This is not a new scenario Most young peoplearenrsquot able to leave the village for post-secondary education and remain in thecycle of poverty with little access to income Will you help us help these youngpeople break free Information on how to contribute to the John CookScholarship Fund can be found below

Our StoryWhen we first saw the vision of Simple Matters nine years ago we knewwe could trust God to make HIS plan happen And He has accomplishedthat plan Children at Camp Betel have monthly medical care Babiesreceive immunizations at birth and families hear and experience the life-changing word of God Scholarships are given to elementary children whoneed help with their educational expenses so that they can continue withtheir schooling With the establishment of the John W Cook ScholarshipFund in 2019 we are able to give financial support to high school andcollege students giving them opportunities to escape the poverty they nowknow Our dream at Simple Matters is to extend this kind of care to otherchildren in other villages in Honduras On our 2019 trip we worked withthe people of Iglesia Bautista Emanuel and Iglesia Bautista Renacer in thecapital city of Tegucigalpa and in the villages of Brisas del Campo LasMesas and El Naranjaacutel Mario and Keila are our contacts who work ashome missionaries in their country Working with Mario and Keila yearafter year we are aware of areas of great need Simple Matters nowpartners with with Mario and Keila in their ministries with children in thevillage of El Naranjaacutel and surrounding villages through the Cookie Projectand Health Matters Our priority goals for the current year are to fund afull-time doctor for the Health Matters mobile clinics and to help studentsfrom El Naranjaacutel continue their education through the John W CookScholarship Fund

the village and provided afternoon activities for ladies and children wegathered with the youth during their weekly discipleship meeting During thisgathering I met Ana a young girl who has graduated high school and wants tocontinue her schooling to obtain a degree in Information Technology She isjust waiting until the scholarship money is available for her to resume herstudies Simple Matters wants to help Ana and two other students to reachtheir goals but we are determined not to make a commitment until we cancommit to begin and finish the costs of their post-secondary education If weare to be able to fulfill this commitment we need ongoing donations to pay thecosts of their tuition and transportation costs for the entire time After initialstartup expenses that include vocational and psychological testing andpreparation in basic college skills the cost for tuition and transportation is only$160 per month a small percentage of tuition in the US Since Ana has finished school and isnrsquot employed while she waits for thescholarship money she has nothing to do during her days except watch TV andhang out with her friends This is not a new scenario Most young peoplearenrsquot able to leave the village for post-secondary education and remain in thecycle of poverty with little access to income Will you help us help these youngpeople break free Information on how to contribute to the John CookScholarship Fund can be found below

Our StoryWhen we first saw the vision of Simple Matters nine years ago we knewwe could trust God to make HIS plan happen And He has accomplishedthat plan Children at Camp Betel have monthly medical care Babiesreceive immunizations at birth and families hear and experience the life-changing word of God Scholarships are given to elementary children whoneed help with their educational expenses so that they can continue withtheir schooling With the establishment of the John W Cook ScholarshipFund in 2019 we are able to give financial support to high school andcollege students giving them opportunities to escape the poverty they nowknow Our dream at Simple Matters is to extend this kind of care to otherchildren in other villages in Honduras On our 2019 trip we worked withthe people of Iglesia Bautista Emanuel and Iglesia Bautista Renacer in thecapital city of Tegucigalpa and in the villages of Brisas del Campo LasMesas and El Naranjaacutel Mario and Keila are our contacts who work ashome missionaries in their country Working with Mario and Keila yearafter year we are aware of areas of great need Simple Matters nowpartners with with Mario and Keila in their ministries with children in thevillage of El Naranjaacutel and surrounding villages through the Cookie Projectand Health Matters Our priority goals for the current year are to fund afull-time doctor for the Health Matters mobile clinics and to help studentsfrom El Naranjaacutel continue their education through the John W CookScholarship Fund
