Wow has it been a busy month, since our last article we have rode our motorcycle in 10 different states!!! What a great
summer we are having!! At this point I am sure most of you have heard about the changes happening in GWRRA, the
most important thing to remember is that at the Chapter level no changes are necessary if your Chapter is successful. We
will discuss the changes in depth at our monthly gathering.
We have a few things planned for this month:
August 5th we will attend Chapter I's Fun Run in Cape Girardeau. This is an annual event and is always a great time,
the proceeds from this event help them to provide Christmas Baskets for 12 needy families in their area.
August 11-12 will be the Region E Rally in Williamsburg, Iowa. Our monthly dinner ride will be on August 15th and
we will go to Poppy's Ristorante in Festus, MO. On August 19th we will ride to Jefferson City, MO to attend the annual
District Appreciation Picnic, where everyone is asked to bring a dish (with something in it). On August 20th we will par-
ticipate in the annual Ride For Kids, please watch your emails for additional information and opportunities to volunteer.
August 26th we will ride to Carlyle Lake for KZ's Big Weinner Run, KZ and Carla will be camping that weekend and
will have hot dogs waiting for us, we ask that everyone bring a dish to share.

Hello everybody! We hope all of you are coping all right with this weather. We had to cancel a ride
related to the heat but hopefully we will be able to reschedule that one again.
We had several rides this month with some great attendance numbers. We had a ride to the Blue Boar
with 25 riders. Then there was the Bartlesville, Oklahoma trip that 9 members went on for a few days
of riding. The next ride was Pete's Bar n Grill for some great food followed by a trip to Ginny's for ice
cream on National Ice Cream Day. Our dinner ride was a new place in Arnold called Smokee Mo's,
the food was very good and we are hoping they will become a new sponsor. (And next time the parking
will be better)
Everyone please be careful riding in the heat. Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated and don't for-
get the sunscreen!!
Ride safe and smart,
Vernon and Pat

I hope this article finds everyone in good health and enjoying plenty of riding. I want to revisit some items I
have discussed in the past. If you have a co-rider, remember the decisions you make before and while you
are riding could affect that co-rider for the rest of their life as well as your own.
Start with the first step; are you up to the challenge? We are all growing older and our eyes may not work as
well as they did when we were younger. Have you had an eye checkup lately? Additionally, as we age our
strength starts to fade; do you work out? Are you finding it more difficult to handle your bike? There is NO
shame in admitting this; in fact this shows rider maturity.
Step number two: planning. This could include the following: Bike and trailer maintenance, protective gear
(in good condition), maps-GPS-addresses of stops and lodging, cell phones with chargers, eye glasses
(backup), keys to ALL locks (spare set), medication, flash lights with fresh batteries, binoculars, hats, sun
screen, tool kit, first aid kit and passports if traveling out of USA. What I have tried to show here is a list of
things that can make your ride better. LIST? When you are planning an extended ride or vacation, it is a
good idea to make a list. If you have a co-rider, each of you should make a list and then compare lists. Com-
bine the two lists; what one forgets or needs the other may remember. Remember our motto, “Friends for
Fun, Safety, and Knowledge”. My co-rider is my best friend; I want her to be safe and I will try to keep her
safe thru knowledge. I hope you feel the same.
Until next month, ride safe, and remember you make the final decision.

MARK & SHARON MEYER
Motorcycle Awareness
Can't believe it is August already! Just had a very hot July but most of us rode our machines and many times
it was not comfortable. With this said, it brings up ambient weather conditions can play a large role in safety
for you and all others. Don't be shy about asking to take a break when riding along with others. Both heat
and cold can drastically affect your motor skills and thinking process. Cool down and drink plenty of proper
liquids in hot weather and in everything you do. I know you have heard this a million times but some of us
are stubborn. Me, being one of them. I have been able to take the heat all my life, but just this week I was
installing the plumbing for a friend’s in ground pool on 95 degree day after it stormed overnight and about 4
hours into it my ears started popping and I had no energy left at all. I quit for the day and had cramps in my
arms and legs for the next 12 hours. And I did drink cold water and Gatorade while working but sweated it
out faster than I could drink it. The big thing was that I could not think straight when I got to this point. You
do not want to operate a motorcycle when you get overheated. Cold weather can also take your mind off of
what your suppose to be doing and cause poor judgment, then it is too late. Please don't be too proud to ask
or take a break when needed. Your life and others depend on your judgment!
