Memory CornerAn Intergenerational Approach to Dementia
By Ava M. Stinnett
It can be a joy to interact with young children, whether they’re family members likegrandchildren or nieces and nephews or they’re your friends’ children. Little ones can be asource for giving and receiving unconditional love, providing entertainment, and sharingdelightful conversations. An added benefit, according to several research studies, is thatspending time with youngsters may delay the onset of dementia and related diseases such asAlzheimer’s; it may also slow the progression of symptoms for individuals who’ve alreadybeen diagnosed.
We know that there is a strong correlation between social interaction and health and well-being among older adults. The National Institute on Aging, for example,•notes that watchinggrandchildren helps•seniors be more healthy and active. For individuals with Alzheimer’s, achance to interact with a child can give them a sense of purpose; feeling useful to a child canalso be a boost to a senior who feels depressed, lonely, or bored. Further, studies show thatregular socialization stabilizes cognitive decline and improves mood in folks with dementia.
Here are some easy activities to try with young children:
· Jigsaw puzzles with large pieces and floor puzzles that can be done on a card table· Age-appropriate board games, such as Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders; card
games, such as “Go Fish,” or “Old Maid”; and old favorites like dominoes or tic-tac-toe· Reading books to each other from time-honored authors, such as Dr. Seuss, Eric
Carle, Beatrix Potter, Maurice Sendak, Margaret Wise Brown, and Robert McCloskey· Collecting colorful leaves, stones, flowers, and other treasures during a nature walk or
taking a trip to a local zoo or farmer’s market· Household chores, such as folding towels; cutting coupons; or organizing buttons,
coins, stamps, or non-hazardous nails, screws, and other hardware by size, shape, orcolor
· Sorting recipes and finding pictures to illustrate them, then making a “grocery list” ofneeded items
Regardless of the activity, making genuine connections with the people around them is criticalto our loved ones’ physical and psychological health. Giving and receiving emotional supportand care may help seniors maintain their independence and adjust to their changing needs.SourcesBursack, C.B. (n.d.) Adult day care for people with Alzheimer’s. Our Goal is to reduce the numberand impact of falls in memory care. The focus of this study is to recordvideos of fall events to determine ifthe combination of these factors canhelp support this goal:
● Recommendations from anoccupational therapist todetermine the cause of fallsand reduce repeat falls
● Real-time detection of falls● Instantaneous video
witness of falls
About the Study: UC Berkeley andSafelyYou, Inc are designing a safetysystem for reducing the number andimpact of falls in memory care. Weare doing a two-part study, whichplaces a video camera in the privateroom of participating residents torecord fall events. In the first part, videos will be reviewed by our careteam to reduce the likelihood ofrepeat falls. In the second, we willintegrate live fall detection directlyfrom video to assist ER decisions.
In the event of a fall, existing carepolicies at the community willremain in place to ensure residentsafety.
!
Your feedback will be used to helpdevelop a real-time fall supportsystem. Our aim is to provideresidents with asafe home andcaregivers with peace of mind.
Cameras will be placed inparticipating resident rooms. Theyrequire no active maintenance andrecord no audio.
Our Occupational Therapist willreview falls to assess the causeand give personalizedrecommendations to facilitymanagement.
After confirming the effectivenessof software to perform live falldetection, 24/7 monitoring willbe turned on to alert facility staffwith video in the event of a fall.

If you decide to participate youwill be required to:
● Meet with research staff byphone or in person todiscuss the study andprovide informed consent
● Allow researchers to recordfall videos in the privateroom of the participant
● Meet with research staffonce per month by phone todiscuss falls from theprevious month.
Quick Updates: For the past couplemonths we’ve been on pause. Duringthat time, the Department of SocialServices (DSS) has been verifyingour documentation to ensure thestudy runs smoothly for both thefamilies and communities involved.Since we last spoke, there have beensome proposed changes by the DSS.In addition, we’ve added a secondphase to the latter half of the studywhich includes live fall detection!Stay posted for more updates!
