Emergency rooms see an increase in cases of heat stroke and dehydration in July and August. The AmericanCollege of Emergency Physicians gives this advice on how to stay safe in hot weather:

*Check the heat index before going out to work, play or practice and plan accordingly.*Avoid direct sunlight in the middle of the day. Schedule activities for the early morning or early eveninghours.*Wear loose, light-colored clothes and hats. Dark colors absorb more heat.*Drink lots of water or sports drinks; about 8 ounces an hour when in the sun in order to avoiddehydration.*Take frequent breaks in the shade or in air-conditioning to cool off. Calculate the "apparenttemperature" before taking part in activities.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:* At 90 degrees and 50 percent humidity, it feels like 96. At 70 percent humidity, it feels like 106degrees. Heat exhaustion is likely, so take it easy. Heat exhaustion can include cramps, heavysweating, nausea, heart-rate changes and dizziness. Get the victim out of the sun, remove excessclothing and place cool towels on extremities. Fan and give small sips of water.* At 95 degrees and 50 percent humidity, it feels like 107 degrees. At 70 percent humidity, it feelslike 124 degrees. At that temperature and at any higher temperature or humidity, it is extremelydangerous to be outside and heatstroke could occur.* At 100 degrees, humidity ranging from 35 percent to 55 percent can cause heat exhaustion. At 100degrees, humidity of 60 percent or higher puts a person into heat stroke territory. Heatstroke is amedical emergency. Symptoms include confusion, an altered mental state, unconsciousness and hot,dry skin. Call 911. Do not give fluids, which can cause seizures.

From Oregon to South Carolina, Americans will see the sight that has left mankind tremblingand astonished as long as humans have walked the earth.

The Great American Total Eclipse will be one for the record books as totality junkies from acrossthe globe hurry to the best viewing destinations.

On August 21, 2017, for the first time in 99years, the earth, moon, and stars will line upperfectly in a total eclipse that can be viewed in14 states. Best viewing is predicted to be inOregon where sunshine is predicted, especiallynear Madras. Local time will be 10:21 a.m. PDTand totality will last for about 2 minutes and 7to 8 seconds, depending on where the viewerstands.

On the East Coast, the eclipse will start alittle after 1 p.m. and reach totality just before3 p.m.

Further inland, viewers in Illinois andKentucky will experience 40 seconds moretotality.

"A solar eclipse can only take place at the phase of new moon, when the moon passes directlybetween the sun and Earth and its shadow falls upon Earth's surface," according to space.com.

The eclipse will be actively pursued by a sub-culture of totality followers who travel to variousparts of the world to experience the out-of-this world phenomena many times during the year.Scientists will also be watching the display and the shadow allows them to see solar flares.

Resident Profile: Carolyn Adams

Carolyn Adams — Carolyn Adams (aka Carol) was born at Providence Hospitalin Oakland and was the oldest of three children. She is a self proclaimed "Free Spirit”from as far back as she can remember who never was one for following thetraditional so called "norms" of society. Her father was Italian and her motherPortuguese, both first generation American citizen's whom Carol describes as beinghardworking supportive parents who did not always agree with her philosophies onlife, but always respected and backed her in whatever she chose to do. She was raisedin Oakland where her father worked as a baker for a new bakery venture that a fewof his good friends took a risk in opening and they named it the "Colombo Bakery".Carol fondly recalls being woken up by the smell of warm freshly baked bread that her father would bringhome in the middle of the night which is when he arrived home from work. Carol said she would get soexcited when she smelled the bread that she would jump out of bed and run to the kitchen where her fatherwould spread butter on the warm bread for the two of them to enjoy.

Carol attended Berkeley High school and spent her summer vacations working as a maid at a fancy SouthLake Tahoe resort with her best friend. The two friends were given free meals and room and board inexchange for their work. There was nothing better in Carol’s opinion than swimming in the lake on thosehot summer days after work and occasionally sneaking over to the casinos at night to try there luck atgambling. More often than not, the girls were not questioned about their age, which Carol now laughs at indisbelief. Rumor has it that the girls became quite the card sharks and won their fair share of pocket moneyover a couple of summers! The majority of their free time however was spent out in nature taking in the vastbeauty of the Tahoe Sierras. To this day, Carol still pledges her loyalty to Lake Tahoe as her most favoriteplace to be.

After high school Carol started taking classes at San Francisco City College. One afternoon she and a few ofher girlfriends were talking in the hallway about a recently announced Sadie Hawkins school dance that wascoming up. The girls were going back and forth with excuses as to why they could never ask a boy to a dance.Carol recalls thinking she could not believe how wimpy her friends sounded and decided to share with themher thoughts on the so called “rules of dating”. “I look at life as something to be experienced and you can’tallow your fears hold you back. Watch me; this is how easy it is to get a date". Carol said she found herselfwalking over to a young man standing across the hallway whom she had never met and said “So, would youplease do me a favor and be my date for the Sadie Hawkins dance, because I am going to look like a fool infront of my friend’s if you say no”. The young man, whose name was Ronnie, said yes to Carol's invitationand from there the rest is history. Ronnie and Carol fell madly in love and eventually would marry and havetwo sons.

Carol went on to work for and retire from U.C. Berkeley where she worked as a Department Secretary intheir Department of Statistics. After retirement, Carol was awarded a Scholarship to the California Collegeof the Arts and Crafts and graduated with her degree at 70 years old! Carol has been a Carlton resident sinceMay of 2016 and is known for her signature salutation of “hey buddy” or “hey kid” among the staff. Her son,Ronnie lives nearby and visits often along with numerous friends and confidants who love and adore comingto spend time with her. It has been such a pleasure getting to know Carol and I encourage anyone who isreading this to do the same. — Lisa Bellini
