SUNDAY, AUGUST 13th
Join us Sunday, August 13th for our final
outdoor service for this year in the
Peace Gardens at 9:00 a.m. Coffee and
Fellowship will follow.

One day some parents brought their little children to Jesus so he could
touch and bless them. But when the disciples saw this, they scolded the
parents for bothering him. Then Jesus called for the children and said to
the disciples, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the
Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children. I tell you the
truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” - Luke 18:15-17 NLT
Dear Family at PLC,
It has been our tradition to take kids seriously. Children are welcome in our worship services.
We do a special message designed for kids. Children’s choirs do special music periodically.
We celebrate our youth upon their ‘passages of faith’ like baptism, first holy communion,
confirmation and graduation. And, we are committed to Christian Education from pre-
kindergarten all the way through high-school.
In doing so, we are making efforts to uphold Jesus’ words about the value of children.
Vacation Bible School is a prime example of how we do that. Several PLC members stepped
up to help with offering a complete program to kids pre-k thru 6th
grade. The church council
allocated funds to bring energetic counselors from Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp to run the
program. Each year, it is confirmed how important VBS is for the mission of our church-
body
The 4 days of VBS are the widest out-reach we have in our community. Of the nearly 70 kids
who attend, well over half are not members or related to members of our church family. The
congregational picnic brought about 90 folks to the Fellowship Hall, many of them were the
families that were involved in VBS and not members of PLC. This is a clear statement to the
community to “Let the children come to me (Jesus).”
Let us keep sending the message that ‘children are welcome’ throughout the whole year.
Housing Lady Bug Pre-school does a fantastic job relaying this value. As does our Sunday
School program and the dedication of the teachers and all those who help out. I appreciate
how the congregation supports these efforts. I marvel at the enthusiastic efforts of those who
make Christian Education for the youth in our community possible.
As we continue our support of children’s ministry and out-reach, may we all be ‘child-like’ in
our welcoming the Kingdom of God in our midst.
Gratefully,
Pr. Bob

“Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God. Give me
relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer.”
(Psalm 4:1)
When was the last time you read the book of Psalms? What I love about the Psalms is that
they are not so much about God as they are to God. The Psalms are written in the language of
intimacy- the language that develops trust, hope, and understanding of God. It is the language
we need to speak to start a deep, loving relationship-not only with God, but also with each
other. That is how I know the psalms are real and honest and why I know I can trust what they
tell me.
In the Psalms there are find prayers for deliverance from persecutors (Ps.17), trust in God
(Ps.3), thanksgiving for recovery from an illness (Ps. 30), prayer for forgiveness (Ps.51),
God’s blessing in the home (Ps.127), praise for God’s universal glory (Ps.148), to name but a
few. But the psalms offer more than a reflection of our lives- they guide our lives.
Where else in the Bible would I turn to, really, when my wife has just left me, or I’ve lost my
best friend in a car accident or when I celebrate the birth of my daughter? 1 Kings, Proverbs,
Hebrews? When I have experienced such profound life changes I don’t want to learn more in
such moments, I simply want to cope with the changes, good or bad. What a comfort it is for
me to know the Psalms are there, speaking the words of anguish or praise that I cannot form
myself and yet so sorely need to speak!
That is why I turn to the psalms. They speak to me largely because I am reassured that
someone else has dared to speak, to ask of God directly and openly what I have kept in my
heart- my doubts, my fears, the “Why” and the “How long” questions that I suppress. But of
course, God knows they are there- all I accomplish by my silence is to deny God a chance to
answer.
The psalms are immediate expressions of the events in our lives and the subsequent effect
these events have on our relationship with our Creator God. If we wish to develop in our life
of faith, to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, the psalms are
necessary. They are necessary because they are what pastor and author Eugene Peterson calls
the “prayer masters.” In his book Answering God Peterson writes, “If we dismiss the Psalms,
preferring a more up-to-date and less demanding school of prayer, we will not be without
grace, but we will miss the center of where Christ worked in his praying.”
If it has been a while since you have read and prayed through the Psalms, then I urge you to
rediscover the riches of these verses of prayer, petitions and praise.
Love in Christ,
Pastor Jeff
