BEAUTY AND ITS MANIFESTATION
Some of the best things in life happen when one is least expecting them. My holidays began after a busy schedule of semester exams at College. I was lost a bit as to how I could spend my time in the hot summer. I then chanced upon this advertisement at the Secunderabad Club that invited young girls to participate in a beauty pageant. Thus I dived in, albeit, with some trepidation as to what would be my experience and the ever overhanging consternation at performing before a large unknown audience.
Anywas, I found myself soon engulfed by the rigor of the schedule of preparation. It involved over two weeks of training and meeting new challenges every other moment, we soon realized that the May Queen was a star studded event, which meant a lot of intense hard work and dedication.
We were 19 girls under 2 exuberant guides who brought out the princess quotient amongst us all. I would leave with my family for the practice at 5 pm every evening. They would wait very patiently for me for the next 5 to 6 hours. Over the span of the next 2 weeks, each day brought a new change in me. I found myself on a path of self discovery. It was an experience where I would stumble, pause and then gather myself and find a new purpose and strength every now and then.
We had a poolside photo shoot to commence the competitive phase, after which our photos were displayed on the Club's notice board. Every day before my practice would begin. I would sneak out and try to catch a glimpse of my photo. It was so dreamy and fulfilling.
While we would practice the evenings, we would be dress hunting in the morning and busy with our fittings for our dresses. The theme of the event was “An Ode to The Indian Princess” and we all had to live upto that expectation.
The talent round was conducted about a week before the main day. It was jam packed with the wonderful audience. The talents displayed ranged from singing to dancing and glass painting and even cooking. I took the opportunity to display two of my talents; first, a piano recital,
and then a rendition of a Bharatnatyam performance.
Before the final day, we were done with the sub contests except for Miss Catwalk, which was left for the judges to decide during the main event. The night before the big day we all put up our best efforts in preparation. We worked till midnight and were back at 11 am the next day for the final show. Lights, camera and action was how, it felt on the day. I was excited getting all dolled up and wearing exquisite crafted jewellery pieces from Mussadilal Jewellers.
We graced the stage with the grandest of a royal entrance in Horse drawn chariots. The show had three rounds for the evening. The first round was inspired from the Gold-Embellished Mastaani outfits and the dresses were our own. We wore Sherwaanis by
Sonia Punwani and beautiful Ghaghras by Tarunis for the next two rounds.
It was like a rush hour backstage. Finally the big moment arrived for announcement of the awards. I was thrilled when I was crowned with the Miss Photogenic title, and was gifted with prizes worth Rupees 18,000/-. Three beautiful ladies amongst us were crowned with the first three titles. Even though I did not make it big I left the event with a self belief and faith in myself, that I have gained a lot and grown as a person.
That night I realized that I would be carrying a big bucketful of memories home which would be cherished forever.

A CALL AND RECALL
In all professions the acquisition of skills and knowledge depend largely upon the quality of instruction imparted. It is however, only when these attributes are actually applied in practice, that experience is gained and self – learning commences. Perhaps the training and education in our air force is as good an example as any other. As pilot trainees in 1951 - 52 we underwent 18 months of learning, both in the air and on the ground. Most of our instructors had served in the RAF / RIAF and transferred their learning and experience to us as future pilots, officers and gentlemen of the IAF.
Learning to fly was a challenge and great fun but ground subjects were less so. The syllabus of the latter included a few lectures on 'Custom of the Services' a manual by a Gp Capt Stradling of the RAF for which it was a definitive guide. Our fledgling air force was still in the process of indigenising our own customs hence, in the interim, continued to follow those laid down in the book. We were taught about the significance of Dining-In Nights and had one every week in our own Flight Cadets Mess. We also learned the social requirement of calling upon the Commanding Officer (CO) of the unit one was posted to. It laid down procedure for making an appointment, dress, duration and other protocols which included the discreet leaving of two visiting cards!
After graduation and completion of fighter conversion (all on piston - engined aircraft), three of us course mates were posted as Pilot Officers to the very first squadron of the IAF equipped with jet (Vampire) aircraft (ac). Jet trainers were still three years away so we were launched solo after detailed ground briefing. We learned to cope and built up our individual expertise because every sortie was a self – learning experience. On the ground our Adjutant (a future air marshal and Chairman of HAL) made us print visiting cards (no ranks for pilot officers; only 'Mr'!) and arranged a date / time for us to make a call on our squadron commander.
Our CO (Sqn Ldr GKJ) was a thorough gentleman, soft spoken and avuncular in nature.
We were still immobile and yet to acquire bicycles, hence walked to his residence anxiously clutching our newly printed visiting cards! At exactly 7 pm we pressed the door bell and were welcomed by our CO who promptly relieved us of the visiting cards, served us drinks and snacks personally and got to know us socially outside the work environment. At exactly 7.30 pm (after exchanging meaningful glances with each other) we rose, thanked him for his hospitality and prepared to exit. He politely escorted us out, thanked us for coming and then, with a twinkle in his eye, informed us that the 'call' was over and ushered us back into the house where his wife had a delicious home cooked dinner awaiting us. We had a most enjoyable, informal and relaxed evening at the end of which our CO dropped us back in his car.
The next morning, in response to his query, we assured the Adjutant that we had got up and exited after the prescribed 30 minutes. He seemed satisfied and our CO had a quiet, conspirational smile for three young officers who had learned a great deal from his thoughtful and kind gesture; an example of experiential learning we would adapt and put into practice ourselves in future years.

Tenth isn't tough, the seniors always said. But when I came to tenth, I thought I was dead.Cos nothing at all was going into my head,All day long I would lie hopelessly on my bed..Trigonometry, algebra and statistics in math,I wished on these books, I could remove my wrath. These initially were the thoughts that came to my mind,My brain stopped working from the forebrain to the hind.Procrastination had become my favourite hobby, When ever asked to study, I would become snobby. Then came the time..for the first term exam!I took it very lightly like I didn't give a damn.I enjoyed up till the last day, And all I did was play, play and play! Finally when I sat down with my book,I couldn't understand a single thing, from every corner to every nook. Studying with music in my ears, and rolling from my eyes were big fat tears.Somehow I wrote the test,And thought that I've given my best. But when the results finally came,I was like an animal untamed. I hadn't scored very well,And I didn't know why, I couldn't tell.!From that day..I vowed that ,I will work as hard as I can,And towards my study table, I ran.In the second term I worked a lot,And this time I wanted to give my best shot. The exams were very near, But this time, there was no fear.Coz my goal was very clear.I studied like a book worm,And gave my exams for the second term.I performed well this time and hoped for the best,And on my hard-work, depended the rest.Once the results were out,I could say, I got 10 cgpa and made my parents proudA piece of advice to all friends of mine,You have to work hard, and you shouldn't whine.Be it class ten or class nine,If you are sincere enough, you'll always be fine.
