HERE’S WHAT’S NEW…

Without a doubt we are in a world that is filled with trouble. It is becoming routine to see “troubling” news alerts coming across our televisions or our smart phones advising us of yet another mass shooting. Along with that we have the threat of ISIS and Muslim extremists wiping out mass numbers of human beings across Europe and the Middle East. Mix with that what many would call the most troubling election cycle in US history, a global economy that is largely inflated, the Christian faith being openly mocked and ridiculed, churches that are becoming more social clubs than bastions of truth . . . and yes, I think you could say that we are living in troubled times.

But, that’s not the end of Jesus’ statement in John 16:33. He concludes that statement with this: “But take heart, for I have overcome the world.” Without a doubt this has been one of my favorite verses since coming to Christ almost 28 years ago. What Jesus says in the last part of this verse allows all the people of God to breathe a deep sigh of relief.

In other words, the battle has already been fought, the war is already won, the verdict is already in, the final chapter has already been written and it concludes with this truth . . . Jesus wins. And as the conquering king who has crushed evil and death, our gracious God allows us to partake of the fruit of his victory. Jesus goes to great lengths to emphasize the confidence and assurance we should have as God’s people no matter how dark and troubled the times may be. His victory on the cross and subsequent resurrection reminds all of us that the last word does not lie with the evil one, nor with this broken and rebellious world as it descends deeper into darkness. The last word lies with the victorious Lamb who was slain, and he says “Take Heart!”

Live confidently, Solomon

“In this world you will have trouble.” These words come directly from the lips of Jesus in John 16:33.

Identity in Christ… Let’s face it, we are living in crazy times. As a parent of two boys, I watch as the world, and our media work hard to shape my kids into the image they are selling. The world tells us that, we should look a certain way, act a certain way, and believe a certain way.

Social media enables us to collect “friends” like tokens. Often if you look hard at social media, you will find that what you are really looking at is the best snap shots of someones life. It is easy for one to ask the question,”What’s wrong with my life?” “Their life looks so perfect.” It is easy to feel that way isn’t it? So what and whom do we find our identity in? Where do we point our life’s compass?

As a Christ follower we know the answer to that question is Jesus Christ. Here is what scripture tells us “but you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1Peter 2:9 It is so easy to get sucked into this world. It is even easier to become lukewarm in our faith. It doesn't happen suddenly, rather it happens like a drip or a slow fade. We lose our intentionality, our passion, our zeal for the relationship our Lord desires from us. The world is watching us as believers. Probably now more than ever we need to decide whom we identify with. In whom do we find our identity?

I was reminded of this question when I looked at the plaque on the wall of my home that says “as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” Does my house reflect my identity in Christ? Does yours? There is that old saying that says more is caught than taught. If others look at the snap shot of your life, do they see Christ? I am so thankful that Jesus loves. I am so thankful for all the blessings He gives. I am most thankful for the grace received when I fail. Thank you Lord Jesus for loving us unconditionally!

Awana: club meeting, aug 31A few months ago, I was asked to share about my favorite Bible character. As a preschool teacher, I get to regularly teach about the Bible heroes and I love it! When thinking about the Bible Greats, I’m not sure my favorite would make that list, but I think he was nothing short of amazing! I love the little boy who shared his lunch with Jesus, who in turn shared with the masses on that late, hot day long ago. The masses gathered to listen to Jesus teach, watch Him heal and perform miracles. I can imagine the little children climbing on top of parent’s shoulders to catch a better view of Jesus. The day went on and the masses began to get hungry. The disciples noticed the need for nourishment, with not many options around. I imagine a few hours earlier when a little boy was eagerly waiting on his mom to pack him a lunch before he set out to meet his hero, Jesus. He may have thought it wasn’t necessary to take a lunch, but his momma knew he would need that later in the day. While in a crowd of friends and strangers, the boy heard a need for some food. He generously shared his lunch and that day, he became part of one of the greatest miracles of all! Can you imagine him running home and telling his mom how Jesus took his small 2 fish and 5 pieces of bread and fed the masses, with twelve big baskets left over? Jesus didn’t need his lunch to feed the masses, He could have spoken food into existence;

but because the boy was willing to give all he had, Jesus blessed him by allowing him to not only witness the great miracle, but be a part of it! I’m reminded that Jesus doesn’t really need me to accomplish His mission, but when I give all I have to Him in service, He will bless me immeasurably!

We are getting ready to start a new year of Awana. Our first club meeting will be on Wednesday, August 31st. We will meet most Wednesday nights of the school year from 6:30-8 p.m. We are looking for volunteers who want to be part of a much bigger picture, just like the little boy who shared his lunch. Please see Brad or Carmen Fleck if you would like to serve Jesus and kids in this ministry. It’s also time to register your child for club! Awana is for children beginning 2 years before kindergarten through 8th grade. Stop by the Tiny Town counter to sign up! Be sure to watch the Awana at Bachelor Creek Facebook page for updates and announcements.
