Organisations in Darlington havesigned up to become ‘Safe Places’in the extension of a scheme whichaims to create and develop anetwork of safe places in publicareas in and around the TownCentre.

Safe Places are open to anyone whofeels threatened or anxious due to realor perceived behaviour of others aroundthem.

Initially the ‘Safe Place To Be’ schemewas set up by the Local SafeguardingChildren’s Board (LSCB) - a multi-agencypartnership who work together toensure the safety and welfare of childrenin Darlington. Recently the scheme hasbeen extended to include adults whoare victims of intimidation.

Safe Places provide a point of contactand offer a range of help from a“listening ear” and a cup of tea, to helpwith reporting an incident to the policeif the victim wishes to do so. Incidentscan be reported anonymously.

Safe Places has been extended by the Community Safety Partnership, working inconjunction with the LSCB and Ron Hogg. The Police and Crime Commissioner(pictured) to include adults who are victims of intimidation.

Safe Places

For more information visit www.darlington.gov.uk/safeplaces

All Safe places will display a ‘Making Our Community A SafePlace’ logo.

“We are developing Safe Places toensure that when someone is bullied orvictimised, they have access toorganisations that can offer them aplace of safety, as well as support ifthey need it.

I must stress we are not developingthis because Darlington is unsafe, butbecause just like everywhere else, thereare small numbers of people who pickon people who they see as beingdifferent to themselves. This kind ofbehaviour will not be tolerated.”

Darlington Borough Council | 21

There is a common view that all young people are drinkingand taking drugs and this is often exaggerated by the media. The reality is that more than 90% of all young people inDarlington don’t drink alcohol or get drunk regularly andeven fewer take drugs.

Every year, the Council’s Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT)surveys 11 to 16 year olds, capturing the behaviour and opinions ofover 3,500 young people.

The survey has shown that a high proportion of young peopleoverestimate the amount of young people their age engaging in risktaking behaviours.

The Healthy Behaviours Survey asks a range of questions abouttobacco, alcohol and drug use as well as bullying and sexual health (forolder year groups). The results are then built into lesson plans todemonstrate to young people that a minority of their peers areinvolved in risk taking behaviours and that overall, opinion is not infavour of these behaviours.

This feedback is more convincing because it is reporting back what theyoung people in Darlington have said themselves. This overall aim is toalter the perceptions and opinions of young people and allow them tochange their behaviour so that less are involved risk-taking behaviours.

In the five years since we have been doing the survey the reported risktaking behaviours have significantly reduced. This is thought to be partlythrough education in the schools and partly through showing youngpeople the evidence that actually not all young people are ‘doing it’.

Our push for more skilled and well-paid jobshere in Darlington received a welcome boostwith the news that The Tees Valley LocalEnterprise Partnership, which the Council ispart of, has successfully bid for £28 million ofGovernment money.

The money will be invested in Central park and afeasibility study for Darlington train station.

Central park is a development close to Darlingtontrain station. It is a hub for businesses focused oninnovation and skills growth as well as high qualityhousing. It aims to fill the skills gap that exists inDarlington so that people who want a good job don’thave to leave the area and businesses can find peoplewith the skills they need.

The development has really progressed in the pastyear with 330 new homes and the building of BusinessCentral and the National Biologics ManufacturingCentre. Teesside University and Darlington Collegeare also on the site to provide the qualifications andtraining that people need to access the highly skilledjobs which will be created by these businesses.

A study looking at ways to improve Darlingtontrain station also received funding. It could lead tofaster journey times and more long distanceservices on the East Coast Main Line, as well asimproving the retail offer of the station. This is partof the Council’s vision to attract more businessand investment to the town. The project wouldincrease capacity for more rail and freight industryon Teesside and support the development ofCentral park by providing businesses with betterrail links across the country.

What’s next for Central park? The next two years will see the National HorizonsCentre, which focuses on technologies of the future, built on Central Park. This will create 100 direct jobsand more than 2,000 indirect jobs. Followed byFactories of the Future, which is like a high-tech superkitchen, the site will become a centre for expertise inindustrial biotechnology, subsea engineering and digitalmanufacturing and design.
