    Presidents MessageA Major Commitment

The start of school is just a few weeks away and, shortly after that, the business community will be asked forhelp on a variety of fronts. As you read the article on TREK in this issue, you will note the name is changingfrom Teaching Reading to Every Kid to Together Reaching Every Kid. The name change symbolizes thebroader effort to make sure students at all levels have the support and guidance they need to graduate from highschool, at minimum, and be prepared to go into a job or continue their education or both.

The Joplin School District has energized the broad community with its Bright Futures initiative involving theschools, faith-based and social service organizations and the business sector. The new TREK portion will bethe focal point for volunteers to help students, whether it is being an academic coach, a lunch buddy or anotherform of mentorship. In the near future, you will see a more specific list of student support, based on a process weare going through right now to better determine what business really needs from the younger workforce.

One of the key goals of the Joplin Regional Prosperity Initiative is to achieve a minimum 87% graduation rate across the region. Someschool districts are already there, some are close and some have a ways to go. But beyond graduation, its important that the students havethe skills needed to obtain and maintain jobs that allow them to support themselves and their family. To find out what employers need, theJRPI has been conducting a series of focus groups with companies around the area. Alexandria Marketing Research has conducted thesegroups, so the input is provided by an independent third-party with no bias. These groups have been held in Joplin, Carthage, Neosho andPittsburg. While the groups have been diverse in types of business and location, there are common threads in what they see as needed in theyounger workforce.

First, the businesses in these groups cite a lack of professionalism and basic work skills including: showing up on time; adhering to dresscode; communication skills (including not using cell phones, iPods, computers for personal uses and especially in front of customers orclients); written communication skills (e-mails, business letters); time management skills; expectation of higher salary and promotion afterthe First day; work ethic (including attitude of its not my job and willingness to learn); drive for self-improvement; teamwork skills; andlife skills.

All of this information, and more, will be shared with all of the school districts in the region. But the second part of the process was to ask what business can do to help. Some of the ideas included: programs such as job shadowing and internships; involving high school studentsin actual company work projects; more business courses such as personal finance, business finance, business etiquette and business ethics allinstructed, in part, by business people; mock interview sessions with business people; more business input with the curriculum: and companytours.

Alexandria is going through the focus groupinformation to get more specific points, boththe key training needs and how business canhelp. Then, we come back and ask businessesto rank the points, so we start with thosemost likely to get participation.

Regardless, we know we need the supportof business. While funds to help programsare always needed, the real issue we have istime commitments. We need business peopleto take the time themselves and to give theiremployees time to be mentors to students, to

give business tours, to encourage students tostay in school and to show them basic skills. If we are to have the workforce we need to besuccessful businesses and if we want everychild to be successful in his or her own life,it will take a major commitment. We needyour help. Dont wait, call Cary Beasley,Workforce Development Manager at theChamber now and volunteer.

Over the years Ivewatched Joplin andsouthwest Missouri quietlybecome rich fertile groundfor business and commerce.a ground that nurtures theentrepreneurial spirit and

feeds it exactly what itneeds. This CAN DOattitude has been alive and

well in the greater Joplin region for years. As a business ownerfor 13 years and having lived in the market my entire adult life,my gratitude for living in this community grows deeper witheach passing year.As we gain maturity and wisdom in life, we come to know thatteamwork is not a motivational poster or a catch phrase in abreak room, but a real living experience for the good of many. From my time serving on the Joplin City Council as a youngman of 25 years old, to now having my own son in the R-8School System, and being a business owner meeting a payroll,I am thankful now more than ever for the outstanding job the

Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce does for the greater goodfor our businesses and the community. Its for good reasonour Chamber is a 5-STAR Chamber. The Chamber staff livesteamwork, knowing their efforts build a better place for all of usto call home. When I was first exposed to Business Network International(BNI) by a client in Springfield, I knew it would be a matterof time before this system of referrals, accountability andprofitability would make its way to Joplin and our region.Having been one of the founding members, and now president of Joplins first BNI Chapter (Greater Joplin Business Connection),all of us in that small group meeting each Thursday night inthe cold winter months of early 2009 knew this was going tobe a great glove fit for the area and dovetail into the exact

principals for success the Joplin Area Chamber of Commercehas been building on for more than 90 years. Not once did ourgroup ever see BNI and the Chamber in a competition, ratheran enhancement to the over-all teamwork dedicated to smallbusiness, commerce, opportunity and a nurturing component tothat never ending entrepreneurial spirit thats alive and well inJoplin and the 4-State area.Unfortunately in many communities the local Chambers andthe BNI Chapters are in a mental state of competition formembers. Sadly this sends mixed signals to a person who isstarting a business venture. Working together for the good of small business is part of our freedom in this great nation. Fromday one, the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce and BNI haveworked hand-in-hand for the greater good of small business. This works because all of us in southwest Missouri get it. Weget that in order to live the benefits of the community we love,we must all work together for the good of small business. Thatformula is alive and well here in Joplin and for one, I am deeplygrateful to our 5-STAR Chamber for getting it all started 90 plusyears ago.

Ask the Executive Coach...by Daniel P. Chiodo, CMEC | Impact Training & Development

Q:I committed to some big initiatives at the beginning of the year, but now I turn around and see its alreadyAugust. With only a few months to go in 2010, where do I start?

A:This is a great opportunity to see whether you see the glass as half empty or half full. Id say its half fullfull in that you have five whole months to make some headway on these initiatives. Well talk about how toapproach them, but first, lets have a teaching moment. This is one of those times when you need to look atwhat you intended to do, what you actually did, and where you ended up.You intended to pace yourself and not procrastinate, but procrastination came into play-- like an unhealthy food thats hard to resist. The food is so tempting that although you tried to just have one small bite of it, your sample piece turned into a supersized piece. Why not try a different approach the next time you are facing a big project(or your present challenge, since there is still time left.)You have many initiatives and only a few months to do them.

    1. PRIORITIZE each initiative so that you know in what order you should handle2. Take each initiative and assign a COMFORTABLE DEADLINE to it. You have five more months left, so perhaps you

    could do one each month.

    3. Create an ACTION PLAN for each initiative so that you know what steps must be taken and when they must be actedupon.4. ATTACH NAMES to as many action steps as possiblenoting people who will be responsible for different action steps

OR people who you will contact about the project.5. Keep TRACKING the project so that you know you are ahead of schedule on each one.6. CELEBRATE THE SUCCESS of each initiative you achieve and then remember that the next time you are going to

tackle it earlier so that you have even more time to breathe.

Remember that people like dealing with others who handle their time well and meet deadlines early. If you have trouble in this areayou may not be chosen for important assignments. Consider the fact, too, that people you report to promote people who are not onlycompetent in their roles and good communicators, but they also look for people who are great time managers.
