We are ready. For the past seven months

members have been work-ing diligently, with plenty of determination, energy, and excitement.

Projects have been com-pleted, uniforms washed, and equipment shined and ready to go.

The moment they have been waiting for is almost here. Everyone is ready for you. Are you ready for them?

Hello, Williams Lake! It is my honour to welcome you to the 54th annual Wil-liams Lake & District 4-H Show and Sale, held this year from Aug. 17 to 22 at the WL Stockyards.

My name is Amy Stafford and I am a second-year B.C. 4-H ambassador for the Central Interior, a region that encompasses 100 Mile House, Williams Lake, Quesnel, Prince George and Robson Val-ley.

As a 4-H ambassador, it is my responsibility to travel around my region and the province of B.C. to educate the 4-H commu-nity and the public about

4-H, and the benefits it of-fers to all youth ages six to 21.

4-H is a program with an agricultural-based background that aims

to promote leadership, knowledge, citizenship, and personal development skills through achieving projects set out by the 4-H program.

You do not need to have an agriculturally-based background to join 4-H, as there are many non-livestock-related projects, including clothing, crafts, gardening, and photogra-phy.

Some livestock projects include beef, sheep, swine, and poultry. There are also animal projects that are non-livestock, including horse and dog.

Along with completing projects, members attend various club and district functions throughout the year.

These can include club meetings, judging rallies, speeches, demonstrations, and club achievement days. Once members reach 13 years of age, they can also become eligible for pro-vincial trips, all of which I highly recommend.

Perhaps the most excit-ing event in our district is the show and sale, held annually at the Williams Lake Stockyards.

Over the six action-

packed days, you will wit-ness all the hard work and effort that the members have put into making their projects ready for show, as well as the excitement of the new members, the renewal of old friendships and making of lasting memories.

It is not an event to be missed, and I hope every-one will find the time to go, even for an hour or two. You will be glad you did.

Along with my ambas-sador partner Camile Rob-erts, I would like to wish my fellow club and district 4-H members good luck, and I hope everyone learns to do by doing and has lots of fun.

We are ready for you, Cariboo. Are you ready for us?

If you have any questions about 4-H or are interested in joining next year, please feel free to contact me by phone or e-mail at 250-392-7897 or [email protected].

Adriane KennedyChimney Valley 4-H Club

Hi. My name is Adriane Kennedy and I’m from the Chimney Valley 4-H Club.

This is my second year in 4-H and I am a junior member.

I am raising a Landrace pig.

Her name is Lucky Lucy and I am very proud of her.

To date, she weighs 160 pounds and is looking re-ally nice.

She is very gentle and I love every minute I spend with her.

My previous year I also raised a 4-H Landrace pig and did very well with him.

I hope to accomplish even more with Lucy.

I was inspired to join 4-H because of the amaz-ing experience I had last year.

I absolutely love hav-ing an animal as amazing and smart as a pig to com-

pletely call my own. 4-H has taught me so

much, like taking care of an animal to just being

responsible and a good citizen.

This year I competed in the club speeches and placed first so I had the great opportunity to move onto the district speeches.

I placed second in dis-trict speeches and had the time of my life.

I really hope to see you at the 54th annual 4-H Show and Sale.

Thank you!

Alexandra WeiandChimney Valley 4-H Club

My name is Alexandra Weiand and this is my first year in the Chimney Valley 4-H Club.

My 4-H project is a Lion-head rabbit named Ameeka. At the beginning of the year I won third in the 4-H club speeches in the senior cat-egory (Feb. 18, Mountview elementary gym) with the topic of my speech being: “Otzi the Iceman.”

I then went on to the district speeches (March 3, Mountview elementary gym) winning fourth place.

After that I went to my first judging rally May 6 in 100 Mile House. On

June 30, after the parade, I helped out with the pet-ting zoo, bringing my horse Max.

I am very happy to be in 4-H and enjoy learning how to be responsible and

organized. I am really look-ing forward to the show and sale. It would be wonder-ful to see all of you at the 4-H Show and Sale at the Williams Lake Stockyards Aug. 17-22.

Joshua ShoultsChimney Valley 4-H Club?

Hello. My name is Josh-ua Shoults. I am 14 years old and this is my first year in 4-H.

I have a beef project. Tony is my steer and

he is a Hereford X. He is brown and white and very stubborn.

I have a put a lot of work into this beef project so please stop by and take a look at Tony at the 54th annual 4-H Show and Sale from Aug. 17 to 22.

Ayme DesmondChimney Valley 4-H Club

Hello. My name is Ayme Desmond and I am 11 years old.

I’ve been involved in 4-H for five years. I have been in the Chimney Valley 4-H Club for my whole 4-H career.

This year I am in beef and it’s my fourth year in it.

My steer’s name is Elvis and he is a Black Angus-Hereford cross.

He is a very gentle and calm steer and I love him very much because of his personality and his goofy actions.

I’ve been very impressed with Elvis because of his daily weight gain from when I first got him to now.

Also, he has surprised me with how obedient he is when I use the show stick on him.

If you are interested in coming to this year’s 54th annual 4-H Show and Sale, it will be held from Aug. 17 to 22.

The sale is on Aug. 22 with the Parade of Champi-ons at 4:30 p.m. and sale at 5:30 p.m.

The buyers’ dinner also happens on sale day from 3 to 9 p.m. The projects shown and sold are beef, swine, sheep, photography, small engines, and garden-

ing.The projects shown only

are horses, poultry, dog, foods, rabbits, and Clover-buds.

The location is the Wil-liams Lake Stockyards, 4665 Cattle Dr. Please feel free to come and check it out.

Allan StaffordChimney Valley 4-H Club

Hi. My name is Allan Stafford.

This is my fifth year in 4-H and in the Chimney Valley 4-H Club.

This year I am doing gardening planter boxes.

They are in the form of “flower beds” and they look really neat.

This year in 4-H has been fun and exciting.

We start the year with our first monthly meeting, when we hold our club elections.

I am on the phone com-mittee.

This year I did a dem-onstration with Donavan Shaw.

We placed first in our club, district, and regional levels so now we are off to Salmon Arm for Pro-vincial Communications.

I am really excited for this year’s show and sale, held Aug. 17 to 22.

If you have any ques-tions about me or my proj-ect, please come and see

me at the Chimney Valley 4-H gardening section.

Hope to see you there.

Amy StaffordChimney Valley 4-H Club

Hi everyone. My name is Amy

Stafford. This is my 10th year in

4-H, and my fifth year in the Chimney Valley 4-H Club.

This year I have two swine projects, a market hog and breeding gilt; our lot number is 81.

My market hog is named Heidi.

As of July 1, she

weighed 150 pounds and is gaining steadily.

My gilt is called Phoe-be.

I am planning to breed her next year to use as a sow and litter project.

I have been very busy as the vice-president of the Chimney Valley 4-H Club this year, attending many meetings and fund-raisers.

Other things I have done this year include continu-ing my term as a B.C. 4-H ambassador.

I am extremely excited and proud to represent my region in the province.

I am also busy getting ready for the 54th annual Show and Sale, held Aug. 17 to 22 at the Williams Lake Stockyards.

I hope that everyone in the Cariboo this summer will come down to check out the members and their projects.

If you have any ques-tions, please come see us in the Chimney Valley swine pens.

Laurel WhiteChimney Valley 4-H Club

Hi. My name is Laurel White and this is my pig Speckles.

I am with the Chimney Valley 4-H Club.

This is my fourth year in 4-H.

We hope to see a lot of people come to the annual show and sale at the B.C. Livestock’s Williams Lake Stockyards located on Cat-tle Drive.

You can’t miss it — it will be the place with hun-dreds of trailers packed in the parking lot.

There will be lots of noise coming from the barn.

Swine day is Tuesday— it gets a bit rough for pigs but is fun to watch.

On display will be gar-dening, rabbits, beef, swine, small engines, poul-try, dogs, and horses.

Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. is the Parade of Champi-ons, followed by the auc-tion sale of all the market animals.

If you have ever won-

dered about coming or bringing your children to see the animals, stop by anytime between Aug. 18 and 22 and see what is hap-pening.

I will be hanging out in

the barn and will be happy to show you around, if I am not on stall duty.

It is a wonderful expe-rience right in our own hometown — hope to see you there!

Marcus KennedyChimney Valley 4-H

Hello. My name is Mar-cus Kennedy. This is my first year in 4-H. I am a ju-nior member.

I have had a great year so far. I placed second in junior speeches with my speech on Wayne Gretzky. I also did well in the June judging rally.

I hope to do well this year at the show and sale and in future years to come.

I hope to see you at this year’s show and sale.

Amy SwanBig Lake 4-H Club

Hello. My name is Amy Swan and I am a member of the Big Lake 4-H Club.

I am 10 years old and this is my second year in 4-H. I am raising a swine again this year, as I did last year. My pig’s name is Luigi. Lu-igi is a Landrace-Yorkshire cross who loves to eat grass that I pick for him.

We’d like to invite you to the 4-H Show and Sale in August.

Luigi and I hope to see you there.

Chase MckinnonBig Lake 4-H Club

Howdy! My name is Chase Mckinnon. This is my first year in 4-H. I belong to the Big Lake 4-H Club.

My project is Thumper. She is a market pig. My pig is a purebred berkshire. Her colours are black and white.

She got her name because she thumps with her back legs at objects.

She kicks. I think she has bad dreams. A bad dream for a pig could be having intruders like wild animals come into their pasture and try to eat them. Another bad dream could be being cor-nered.

Pigs don’t seem to like this very much. I hope you can stop by and see us at

the show and sale, Aug. 19 to 22.

Dallas SmithBig Lake 4-H Club

Hello. This is my eighth and final year of 4-H. My name is Dallas Smith and I am a member of the Big Lake 4-H Club and our lot number is nine. I have really enjoyed my time in 4-H and all of the friends I have made. I have raised swine every year and just love working with pigs.

Between last year and this I have raised a gilt/sow and litter projects. Pebbles, my gilt project from last year, had eight piglets June 18, 2012.

They are pretty darn cute and doing very well. Pebbles and her babies are all Berk-shires as well and will be at the show and sale on Aug. 22 for the day only.

I am also raising a Berk-shire market swine that was

born Feb 29. She is growing very well and is a bit of a brat. Benelli is always into some-thing and likes to pull pranks on her pasture mates.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at this year’s show and sale from Aug. 17 to 22. It will be a good time for all, especially on swine day. So drop on in to the Big Lake stall and we will intro-duce you to all the swine.

She is a bit of a brat, as the piglets spent a lot of time running around the outside of our huge pig-pen.

They were up in the yard a few times, visited the chicken house once or twice and taught all the other piglets to be naughty as well.

That all came to an end when a bear came and killed one of Betty’s pig-lets … just before they were to go to their new homes. We now have a dif-ferent electric fence … a netted one to keep the pig-

lets in and the bears out as well as other predators.

So far it is working for my brother’s sow and litter project.

I enjoy 4-H and I am a member of the Big Lake 4-H Club. So make sure to check our stall out at the 54th annual 4-H Show and Sale.

We have added some barley to our feeding re-gime this year to make the Berkshire pork extra tasty! The best day for the show and sale is Aug. 21, as that is swine day … always a great show. Sale day is Aug. 22.

Hope to see you all there!

Georgia DiMarcoBig Lake 4-H Club

Hello. My name is Geor-gia. I am from the Big Lake 4-H Club. I have a rabbit for my 4-H project this year.

His name is Misty. He is a two-year-old mini lop. He is grey, and I have to admit he is the cutest, fluffiest, most adorable thing that I have ever seen! I also do my best to take care of him. This is what 4-H is all about for me: 4-H is about caring for your ani-mal or animals. You can have tons of animals, but if I were you I would stick with one or two for right now. But if you were a se-nior who has been doing 4-H for a while you could have one, two, three, or even four projects! But if you are a first timer and you are old enough to be a senior I would go with one project. This is just my first year in 4-H as a junior. I have been in Clo-verbud for one year, but I

got too impatient with it, so I skipped the last year of Cloverbud, and went on to my first year as a junior member.

That happens to be this year. You can have so many projects! There are swine, beef, dog, photography,

small engines, foods, etc. If you come to the show and sale, you can see every project that there is in the district. So, if you like ani-mals and you are between the ages of six and 19, you can join whenever you’re ready.

Hi A

my

Hi Amy

Stephanie SmithBig Lake 4-H Club

Well, it has been another busy year at the Big Lake 4-H Club. Just finished our bottle drive on June 24. Thank you, Big Lake, for the great community sup-port!

My name is Stephanie Smith and my lot number is 11 and my pig’s name is Spotticus (Spot for short as he has a big black spot on his blaze).

He is a handsome Berk-shire Barrow. He is grow-ing pretty well consider-ing he had a late start born

March 22. This is about two weeks later than you want them born at the latest.

He is a bit shorter than my brother’s pigs but he is nicely — no, very nicely — built. We are feeding him extra Barley this year and the piglets love it! The bar-ley will add to the flavour of the Berkshire meat.

I cannot wait for the show and sale to be able to show the public my Berkshire. No wounds on my piglet this year (I had the pig named Flank), so he has a normal name this year! We did have a bear issue in April but that was solved about

as quickly as it started. We do see bears in our pastures regularly but the dog seems to help keep them moving right on out of the pasture so that makes it easier to have the wildlife and pigs living somewhat together.

Spotticus is a fun pig! He seems to enjoy his life in the pasture … although the grass is so high we can hardly see pigs a lot of the time.

Hope to see you all come to the 54th annual 4-H Show and Sale. Pig day is Aug. 22, the best day of the show. Well, at least it does have some action!

Lauren SwanBig Lake 4-H

Hi. My name is Lauren Swan and I am in the Big Lake 4-H Club.

This year I am raising a pig. My pig’s name is Ma-rio. Mario is definitely what I would call “a pig.”

He is almost always hun-gry. You can tell when Ma-rio is hungry because he is quite loud.

I am 12 years old and this is my second year in 4-H and my second year in swine.

I think that 4-H is a cool place to learn about animals — what they like and what they need. This year is the

54th annual 4-H Show and Sale.

Show and sale takes place from Aug. 18 to Aug. 22 at the Williams Lake Stock-yards on Cattle Drive.

I would like to invite you to come down to this year’s show and sale. I will be selling my swine on Aug. 22.

I hope to see you there.

Maria DiMarcoBig Lake 4-H Club

Howdy there, partners! Ever wondered what it would be like to be in 4-H, to raise an animal, get some bucks, raise money, make posters, etc.? (I could go on forever with that list, but you’d fall asleep be-fore I was half way through).

Well, that’s what I’m here to tell you. I am Maria Di-marco from the Big Lake 4-H Club. I am a member in dog and photography. Other proj-ects that you can do are swine (pig), beef (cows), sheep, small engines, horse, foods, poultry (although I don’t think our district has any members), and Cloverbuds, if you are six to eight years old.You are considered a junior member from age nine to 12, and you are considered a senior mem-ber from age 13 to 19 (as of Jan. 1). We have many differ-ent clubs in the district. Some have different projects than others. I really enjoy doing 4-H; you get to have many different experiences, you get to meet new people, and you get to learn what caring for an

animal is like. I am 11 years old, and have

been a junior member for two years. I was a cloverbud for another two years before that, when I was with the Chimney Valley 4-H Club. Last year I did dog, with my two-year-old papillon, Shasta. I did unit 1 last year, and I am doing unit 2 this year. This year I am also doing photography. It is very fun. You get to take pictures you have never dreamed of taking. In the end, you put together a binder of your best pictures, and then show them for your achievement day. I could also make some money with a picture.

4-H isn’t just animals; you also do some public speaking. That is something I am partic-ularly good at. Last year, I got first place in the juniors and got to go to the district speech competition in my hometown. I tied for second with two oth-

er girls there. I then got to go onto the regionals in Quesnel. I didn’t place in the top three in the regionals, but it was a great experience. This year I again placed first in my club as a junior, and again got to go to the districts, again in my hometown. This year, in dis-tricts, I placed first in juniors and got to go onto the region-als again, in Prince George. I placed first in the juniors. I couldn’t go any further after that, but the first place senior gets to go onto the provincial level. I hope to do that some-day, too.

I am the club’s scrap book-er, along with Amy Swan. Other positions in the club are president, vice-president, sec-retary, treasurer, and safety of-ficer; you have to be a senior to be president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. Be-ing club executive sounds like fun! I am proud to be a Cana-dian 4-H member, and I hope you come to our 54th annual 4-H Show and Sale this year and check out some of our award-winning food! Maybe, someday, you’ll become a 4-Her yourself!

Russell SwanBig Lake 4-H Club

My name is Russell Swan and my steer’s name is Yuri.

This is my eighth year in 4-H. I am in the Big Lake 4-H Club. Yuri is solid red. I am feeding him Altwasser mix.

This year I am also taking a heifer named Honey-bee. She is a nice, golden colour. I also have my cow-calf project.

The cow’s name is Daisy and her calf is Duke. They have kept me busy and I will continue to train them until they are ready for the show and sale.

One fun thing I got to do this year was go to provin-cial club week. At provin-

cial club week we learned a lot about team building.

It was a very fun trip and

I would recommend it to anyone who has the chance to go.

Hi! My name is Jordan Monical and this is my third year in 4-H.

I like being with the livestock and being with friends from my club and from other clubs. I like to

train my animals, especial-ly when they are nice and don’t try to run me over.

I am bringing my cow Duchess to the Williams Lake and District 4-H Show and Sale, and she has a baby steer calf named Duke. I also have a Charo-lais steer named Boomer

and a Gelbvieh heifer named Cinderella (my brother named her) coming to the show and sale.

I would like to thank Save-On Foods for its sponsorship of 4-H, and for the cheque that helped me buy my steer for this year.

Colton MonicalHighland 4-H Club

Well, it’s been seven years since I joined 4-H. I’ve raised one swine proj-ect, six market steer proj-ects, four heifer projects, shown two cow/calf proj-ects, made six speeches in front of my club and, along with my little brother, demonstrated how to make chocolate chip cookies.

Practicing for the demon-stration was my favourite part, as we had to sample our product … a lot. I’ve lost track of the 4-H clean-ups, the sorting of cans and bottles for recycling, com-munity weed-pulling days, Ranchers Appreciation Day barbecues, helping various rodeo committees when asked, and overnight camping for cow-camp where we practice groom-ing and showing our ani-mals. It was always a good time… yes, even the weed pulling (they fed us).

There are a ton of trips and educational opportuni-ties available through 4-H

and I hope to go on some of them in the future. I have found that 4-H has helped me make friends, learn new things, and be-come a better sport. One of the first things we learn in judging and competing is that the result is only one person’s opinion on that day. We all believe that our project is the best and all of the members work hard to do the best they can do. I am really proud to be part

of an organization that en-courages such a good at-titude.

This year I have three projects: a market steer named Brutus, a yearling heifer named Thirteen (it was the number on her eartag and I ran out of imagination for names), and I am bringing my cow Princess Peach and her Charolais heifer calf Peach-Pit back as a mature cow.

Colton MonicalMorgyn ReidHighland Valley 4-H Club

Hello. My name is Morg-yn Reid and I am 11 years old.

This is my first year in 4-H. I’m in the Highland Valley 4-H Club and my

project is a steer.My steer is a Charolais/

Red Angus and I named him Goblin.

Raising a steer is a lot of work but I think he is com-ing along well.

So far it’s been fun feed-ing, brushing, and bathing

my steer. He shows his apprecia-

tion by licking.I joined 4-H to learn how

to take care of a steer and to meet new people, and I am looking forward to the show and sale in August.

This year has been a very busy one for the Canim Val-ley 4-H Club.

Although we do not have as many market steer proj-ects we have added foods and small engines to our group of projects and more female projects.

This year we have two steers, one heifer, 11 market swine, one sow and litter, one ewe with lamb at foot, three ewes, six market lambs, one small engine, seven pho-tography with one market project, five Cloverbuds and three foods members.

We had a very successful year last year and are look-ing forward to another suc-cessful year at show and sale week again. Our new addi-tion of female projects to the club has grown again this year.

This year we have three ewes, one heifer and a sow with 12 little piglets. We were to have a cow/calf pair this year but unfortunately the calf did not make it.

The experience of rais-ing the female projects for

the members has been great. They have learned or will be learning about the breed-ing of livestock and the care that it will take to bring the babies back next year. Con-gratulations to all those who have taken on the two-year projects.

We have been busy with fundraising for the yearly expenses. The Canim Valley 4-H Club has become well

known in our community for its catering expertise. We get between three and five catering jobs throughout the year.

In addition to the catering, the club operates a canteen at our local slo-pitch tourna-ments.

Thank you to all the par-ents and members for their help with all the fundrais-ing.

All members have com-pleted all their requirements to attend the 54th annual show and sale Aug. 17-22 at the Williams Lake Stock-yards.

We would like to take this time to invite you all out to see what a great job the members have done this

year. Thank you to all of our

club leaders for their support and commitment to all the members: Audrey Daniels (beef), Norma Theodore-Archie (swine), Pam Theo-dore (swine), Colleen Amut (photography, Cloverbud, and foods), Michelle Archie

(“A” leader and sheep) and Don Dixon (small engine). We would also like to thank our honorary leaders — Mitch Theodore and Marty Dixon.

We would like to give a big thank you to our sponsor Canim Lake Band for all of its support and assistance.

I invite you to come and meet my ewe and market lambs at the 54th annual 4-H Show and Sale. My ewe’s name is Rosetta and my market lamb’s name is Pepper.

This is my second year raising lamb projects.

Both Rosetta and Pep-per are Cheviot-cross bred. They are fed 16 per cent sheep texture, hay and wa-ter. When I first got the lambs they were a little jumpy and hard to handle. I had to use a rope halter to train them to lead without fighting.

They are kept at the Canim Valley 4-H sheep barn with the other 4-H lambs. I have to get up very early every day to feed them in the morning and we feed before supper at night.

This is my first year with a ewe lamb and I am looking forward to bring-ing Rosetta back next year with her lamb as a ewe with lamb at foot.

Preparing for the show and sale is lots of work. We have to teach the lambs to lead, wash them, clip them, and trim their hooves. We practice at our club’s achievement day.

I am also a photography

member with our club. I have to take pictures throughout the year and present them at our achieve-ment day for photography.

Good luck to all the other 4-H members during the show and sale week.

Laura DewsburyCanim Valley 4-H Club

Hello. My name is Laura Dewsbury. I am nine years old. I am a junior member of the Canim Valley 4-H Club.

This is my first year hav-ing a market project. This has been a very exciting year for me.

Claire is my sheep’s name. I was so excited when I first met her, but scared at

the same time.I now spend so much time

with her. She comes when I call her. When I first put her on a halter she was not very happy. It took a while. Now she walks with me.

It was amazing for me to watch when she was sheered. She jumped all around after it was done. I think she was actually very happy to have all that wool gone, especially when the weather was hot.

She gets excited when I go and see her. This makes me smile.

I now can see why my sister loves having sheep as her 4-H project all these years. I would love to live on a farm and have many sheep.

I am looking forward to going to the 54th annual Show and Sale in Williams Lake Aug. 17 to 22.

I hope to see you all there to meet me and my sheep.

This year I am a junior member of the Canim Val-ley 4-H Club. This is second

year, but I have been com-ing to 4-H with my older sisters Kaitlyn and Kalei.

I have two projects this year. One is my swine named Steve. The other is photography. This is my second year for photogra-phy.

OK, I have one funny sto-

ry about Steve, my swine. One time when we let Steve out for exercise the end gate was opened. I ran for my life so I could close the gate so he wouldn’t get out and run away.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone with their projects in the ring.

Paige ArchieCanim Valley 4-H Club

Hi. My name is Paige Ar-chie and this is my eighth year with the Canim Val-ley 4-H Club. This year I was nominated and elected the president of the club.

I have enjoyed the posi-tion, helping the younger members and chairing the club meetings. This year I have taken on the chal-lenge of four projects: a steer, a heifer, a ewe, and foods.

I have enjoyed one year

before with a ewe lamb but unfortunately the lamb died so I was not able to take it back. This year I have named all my animals after the Flintstones.

My steer is named Bar-ney, my heifer Betty, and my ewe Wilma. When Betty was being bred we named the bull Fred.

It has been a great year with my animals. All my requirements for attending the annual show and sale will be complete before I leave.

We will have had our

Sheep Achievement Day on July 28, beef show on July 29 and the foods show will be at the beginning of August. I am looking for-ward to moving to Wil-liams Lake for a week with my animals.

I would like to invite you to attend the annual show and sale Aug. 17 to 22 at the Williams Lake Stockyards.

My steer Barney will be up for auction on Wednes-day, Aug. 22 starting at 5:30 p.m. Our lot number is 27.

The annual 4-H Show and Sale is almost upon us once again, and it is going to be an-other great year for everyone involved. The Springhouse 4-H Club has 33 members who are looking forward to

this year’s 54th annual show and sale, which is being held at the Williams Lake Stock-yards from Aug. 17 to 22. This year we have members in sheep, swine, photography, Cloverbud, self-determined, and beef.

Our club had a busy year with meetings, speeches, dem-

os, judging rallies, parade, and our annual achievement day.

The show and sale is the week that all 4-Hers look for-ward to; it is the date that we work toward. This is the week that all of our hard work pays off, from practicing showman-ship to grooming our projects to get them ready for the show

and sale. Not only does the annual

show and sale at the stock-yards teach us how to show off our animals, it also gets 4-Hers ready for the financial reality that faces the agricultural in-dustry. We thank the wonder-ful sponsors and buyers who make 4-H and the show and

sale possible in the Cariboo Interior. Without your involve-ment, 4-H would cease to ex-ist.

Everyone is welcome to at-tend the show and sale. Project classes are held daily so anyone who is interested can come on by and watch the show. There is also, behind the show ring, an

area where all the animals are held for people to come look at 4-H members’ projects, and members are always present to answer any questions one may have. We hope everyone in the Cariboo Interior has an awe-some end to the 4-H year, and that everyone has fun, because we sure will!

Courtney RankinSpringhouse 4-H Club

Hi. My name is Courtney Rankin. I’m in the Spring-house 4-H Club and this year is my sixth year in 4-H.

I’ve had a swine project for six years and my swine, this year, is named Sooki.

Sooki is a Landrace breed of swine. This year is also my second year doing a ewe lamb project.

My sheep’s name is Sap-phire and she is a Suffolk ewe. This spring Sapphire had two female lambs. I named my lambs Zoe and Sarina. I’m sure enjoying the experience and commitment of raising pig and sheep projects in 4-H this year.

I hope I’ll see you at show

and sale week, which starts Friday, Aug. 17 and goes to the 22nd. Please come out and see what our club has

to offer! Also, if you want to find me, I’ll be either in the pig or sheep sections of the Springhouse 4-H Club.

Courtney RankinOrrin WatkinsonSpringhouse 4-H Club

Hello there. My name is Orrin Watkinson and this is my first year as a senior member of the Springhouse 4-H Club.

I am 14 years old, and this is my fifth year in 4-H. In previous 4-H years I have completed Cloverbud and fed lamb projects.

This year I am doing a fed steer by the name of Niko-lai. He is a Hereford/Angus cross and he weighs around 1,215 pounds.

He is very friendly and easy to work with. Our lot

number is 235.Nikolai is a homegrown

steer that I purchased from my grandparents Fred and Barb Watkinson, who have a ranch in Lillooet, B.C.

I joined 4-H so that I could learn about raising a fed steer and all that is involved in showing and grooming a beef project.

I enjoy attending the 4-H functions and getting together with other clubs, especially at the show and sale.

4-H is a great way to learn to work with animals and members alike and to do various events and proj-ects; 4-H teaches many life skills.

Nadia KlaueSpringhouse 4-H Club

Hi. My name is Na-dia Klaue and I am 12 years old. I am part of the Springhouse 4-H Club. This is my first year in 4-H and I am a junior. I am raising one market swine.

My pig’s name is Pip-pin; she is a very energet-ic and friendly pig. When I go out in the morning to feed her she’s waiting by the door of the pen for me.

She runs around a lot with her brother Nico. I love to play with her, run-ning around the pen lis-tening to her squeal. It’s really funny.

She also follows me around to see if I have any special treats for her.

I love to watch Pip-pin and Nico fight over the food and for the most comfortable part of their hay bed.

But most of all, I love having to be responsible for raising an animal that then gets to be sold in a public place.

You can come and see me at the show and sale on Aug. 22 at 5:30 p.m. I will be in lot 221 so come

and say hi to me and my pig Pippin. Pippin and I will be looking forward to seeing you there.

Tierney WatkinsonSpringhouse 4-H Club

Hi. My name is Tierney Watkinson and this is my 11th year in 4-H. It is also the last year I can be a nor-mal member because I’ll be 20 next year …. That’s an odd thought.

Strangely enough, this year I don’t have a sheep project. Instead, I am trying out photography as well as raising another steer, named Radar.

I really enjoy photogra-phy, and I went to school for a while in Newfoundland, so I got a lot of practice taking random photos of the ocean and flowers.

I even joined my school’s photography club, which was awesome, although we were all so busy with exams that we didn’t have time for much else.

Radar was born in June of last year, and his dam (moth-er) is my cow Darby. I named him after a character from the TV show M*A*S*H. He’s mostly red Angus, crossed

with Hereford, but there is some Simmental and Short-horn thrown in there too. Ra-dar is a bit shy around other people, but at home he is a sweetheart. I don’t know if I am going to sell him at the show and sale because I was away for so long, but I will definitely be showing him.

I feel like I have come a long way since I picked my first 4-H lamb Patches. For one, I am more imaginative

when it comes to naming an-imals (even if I do steal ideas from movies).

Although my years as a full member are done, I would really like to be a junior sheep leader or do a self-determined project.

There has been a lot of yelling, crying, and kicking throughout the years; luck-ily, there have also been a few good laughs and memo-rable moments, too.

Maeghan WatkinsonSpringhouse 4-H Club

Hi. My name is Meaghan Watkinson and I am 17 years old.

I was first introduced to 4-H when I was six years old in Merritt, B.C.

I did my first year of 4-H there and I have now been in 4-H for a grand total of 11 years by being a part of the Springhouse 4-H Club.

4-H has brought me closer to the value of agriculture and to a better understand-ing of the industry. I have to thank my parents for allow-ing me to join this opportuni-ty to become more informed so, in the future, I will have the chance to have my own ranch, like my grandparents.

Throughout my time in 4-H I have done many proj-ects. I first did Cloverbuds for two years, and then went into sewing. I was the only one who wanted to do this project, so my mother be-came the leader and did this for two years before switch-ing to do swine.

This year I will have done a swine project for six years. I have also done sheep projects for four years.

This year I am doing swine and a self-determined project. My swine is a purebred York-shire, and I had purchased her in April from Walter Hengs-tler; her breeder was Larry Jalcubec from Alberta.

I named my pig Hen Wen after the pig on the Black Cauldron. Hen Wen will be under lot number 234 during the show and sale this year.

The self-determined proj-ect that I chose to do is artis-tic techniques such as draw-ing and painting, which I’ve learned throughout the years. I decided to do this project because I love art and I am going to further my educa-

tion in this subject later this fall when I go to university.

This fall, after the show and sale is over, I am going to Thompson Rivers Uni-versity to do my bachelor of fine arts in Kamloops. I hope to come back next year to do one more year in 4-H before I call it quits.

The show and sale is a must see for animal lovers and children. There are al-ways classes throughout the long week designated to par-ticular projects, and everyone is welcome to attend.

4-H is a unique learning experience for the young and old, so why don’t you come on down to the 54th annual 4-H Show and Sale held Aug. 17 to 22 at the Williams Lake Stockyards!

Sarah LachanceRose Lake-Miocene 4-H Club

Hello. My name is Sarah Lachance and I wold like to invite you to the 54th annual 4-H Show and Sale Aug. 17 to 22.

I have been in 4-H for eight years now. This is my first year as a senior and my fifth year in a sheep project.

This year I will be taking my ewe-with-lambs-at-foot project, mom Crinkle, babies Twix and Henry (Twix will also be going as my ewe lamb this year), and my market lamb Hor-ton to the show and sale.

I will be showing all four of them on Aug. 19 at 9 a.m. You can come look for them or come watch me show them.

Just look for lot number 177.

This is my third year bringing my two-year-old ewe lamb Crinkle back to the show and sale.

During my first year

with her she was my ewe-lamb project, and this year I am bringing her as a ma-ture ewe with lambs.

Originally I wasn’t bring Crinkle back this year.

I was going to bring my ewe lamb, Babe, from last year back as a ewe-with- lamb-at-foot project, but

sadly she didn’t make it through lambing season.

Luckily I was still able to carry on with one of them as my ewe lamb, but the other one, I decided, was too small for a mar-ket-lamb project, so I went to Pam and Hugh Mahon and bought a Hampsire-Suffolk X Clunforest off of them, and so far I love him.

Our club, the Rose Lake-

Miocene 4-H Club, had our sheep shearing on July 5 and we had the opportu-nity to weigh our lambs so we could see how much food and how much we needed to put into them before the show and sale.

So far, my ewe lamb weighs 70 kilograms, my other lamb at foot weighs 60 kgs, my two-year-old ewe weighs 170 kg, and my market lamb weighs 85 kg.

I would like to try to get the lambs up to about 100 kgs each.

Show and sale is the one thing everyone in 4-H looks forward to in the year, and I am look-ing forward to seeing lots of people’s faces light up around all of the animals everyone has worked so hard to get to that point.\

I would like to say a special thanks to my buyer John Margetts from Mar-getts Meat Market last year for sponsoring 4-H and for buying my lamb. Hope to see you there!

Sarah Lachance

The 4-Hers, and their leaders, in the Horsefly 4-H Club invite everyone to at-tend the 4-H Show and Sale this year. There will be interesting things going on all week. A different show every day, with the annual sale on Wednesday. Come and see what these hard working kids have accomplished.

Hey, everyone! My name is Karina Sukert. I am 16 years old and I’m the presi-dent of the Horsefly 4-H Club. Our club has a whop-ping 24 members, including a bunch of young, sparky Cloverbuds and juniors.

Our club’s projects con-sist of beef, swine, photog-raphy, and sheep.

This is my eighth year as a member with the club and my fifth year in beef. My lot number is 134.

This year’s steer’s name is Cattlac. I got him from the Westwick’s Ranch in Miocene and, oh my, he’s a big, black Angus Hereford. I feed Cattlac 20 pounds of Dairy Ration and two flakes of hay a day, This boy is certainly a looker!

When I weighted him in

March, he was 950 pounds. One of my biggest steers yet! Our achievement day is on July 29, so we shall see how much he weighs then.

I would like to invite ev-eryone to this year’s 54th annual Show and Sale, held at the Williams Lake Stock-

yards on Cattle Drive. It goes from Aug. 17

to 22. Be sure to look for Horsefly’s bright red shirts in the show ring and come by the stalls to check out our animals.
