Deep Look Honored with a Jackson Wild Media AwardDeep Look, KQED’s science and nature series, has won a 2020 Jackson Wild Media Award, the Oscars® of wildlife filmmaking, in the Animal Behavior Short Form category. The winning episode is "This Killer Fungus Turns Flies into Zombies." The four-and-a-half-minute film is about a fungus that invades and kills flies, forcing them into a gruesome death pose so that it can shoot out its reproductive spores. The episode was produced by Gabriela Quirós. Josh Cassidy is the series cinematographer. Carolyn Elya, a Harvard researcher, studied how the fungus invades and kills fruit flies, and provided the team with access to the infected fruit flies.
Deep Look is presented on the PBS Digital Studios YouTube network and has over 1.5 million subscribers, in addition to more than 180 million total views. Deep Look’s videos are shot in ultra-HD and use macro cinematography and microscopy to reveal small, hidden worlds in nature. To watch Deep Look episodes and subscribe to its YouTube channel, go to youtube.com/kqedDeepLook
KQED and Collaborators Receive a Murrow Award The Radio Television Digital News Association honored KQED journalists Farida Jhabvala Romero and Vanessa Rancaño and the collaborative team responsible for “Graying California” with a 2020 National Edward R. Murrow award. The awards recognize the best electronic journalism produced by radio, television and digital news organizations worldwide. “Graying California” is an extensive reporting series that examines how seniors are becoming California’s fastest-growing age group and how this demographic may be reshaping the California Dream.
The series is part of the California Dream project, a statewide public media collaboration produced by KQED, CALmatters, KPBS, KPCC and Capital Public Radio. In addition to Romero and Rancaño, the “Graying California” team includes Sammy Caiola (Capital Public Radio); Matt Levin (CALmatters); Meghan McCarty Carino (KPCC); Julia Mitric (Capital Public Radio); Amita Sharma (KPBS); David Wagner (KPCC) and California Dream editors Adriane Hill and Bob Nishizaki. You can see the series at grayingcalifornia.org.

R A D I O
We’ve made it to the end of a very difficult year. So much has changed and the news cycle has been relentless. While we’ve faced unprecedented challenges and global tragedy, we’ve also witnessed the power of community and immense outpourings of compassion and solidarity. As we reflect on 2020, we want to thank you for being a KQED radio listener. You make all the work we do possible and in the wake of so much struggle, you keep us grounded in our mission to inform and support our community.
Thanks to your input, we ramped up our coronavirus coverage and worked to answer community questions and concerns. We also amplified our election coverage to support local need. And we continue to work toward bringing more diverse perspectives and voices to our airwaves. Your participation in public media makes us better, and we look forward to continuing to provide “essential” services to you in the years to come as the resilience and strength of the Bay Area community continues to shine.
This New Year’s Eve, we’ll continue a KQED and NPR tradition and break format for the final hours of 2020 to bring you some celebratory music. Toast of the Nation airs from 8:00pm to midnight. We hope you can spend the end of the year enjoying a well-deserved break, whether it’s a Zoom rager, a quiet night of rest or a socially distant celebration with loved ones.
Cheers,Jonathan BlakleyExecutive Director, Radio Programming
Happy New Year, KQED Radio Listeners
STARTER EPISODE
“Guess What? Chicken Butt Is Delicious (with Yo-Yo Ma)”One of the silver linings of the pandemic has been upping my cooking game. Local chef and writer Samin Nosrat hosts this quarantine cooking advice show with Hrishikesh Hirway, who also hosts a stellar podcast called Song Exploder. Delightfully entertaining, the series offers up new recipes and cooking puns. I made Samin’s Big Lasagna; it’s exactly what we need right now.
STARTER EPISODE
“Kobe” The California Love podcast series is a true love letter to Los Angeles. See the city through the eyes of hometown writer and former New York Times reporter Walter Thompson-Hernández. Full of heart, the series pulses with Thompson-Hernández’s memories of growing up in L.A. In this episode, dedicated to Kobe Bryant, he brings together sports, identity and loss.
STARTER EPISODE
“Housing as Reparations”The housing crisis is a huge problem that affects us all. KQED’s SOLD OUT: Rethinking Housing in America podcast focuses on solutions and what it takes to implement them. This episode looks at an affluent Southern California beach town, which was once a thriving Black community and is now the center of a growing movement for reparations.

What are the best podcasts to listen to right now? We asked Molly Solomon, KQED’s housing affordability reporter, what she recommends. Here are her picks.

Like other businesses, the wine industry has been devastated by the events of 2020. Every bottle of wine is filled with the blood, sweat and tears of those who sacrifice to make it and the loss is incalculable for so many in our region. Get an intimate look at this industry and the people in it who are rarely recognized for their contributions on Independent Lens: Harvest Season, which premiered on KQED 9 last year. The film follows the stories of individuals who are essential to the wine industry, including a veteran winemaker, a Mexican migrant worker and a Latinx wine entrepreneur whose family has worked in the region for generations, as well as the stories that unfold against the complex backdrop of reality in Napa and Sonoma. Harvest Season is streaming now through December 15 on KQED Passport. —Meredith Speight, KQED Director of Television Programming

Josephine Baker: The Story of an Awakening A New Doc Shines a Spotlight on the Performer, WWll Spy and Civil Rights Activist Rising from poverty in St. Louis to become a world-famous dancer in France — the first Black superstar — was an amazing achievement, but Josephine Baker was passionate about a lot more than her career on stage and screen. Baker was a fierce fighter against injustice: a spy for the French Resistance during World War ll and later a civil rights activist in the United States.
Born in 1906 to a Black mother and a white father, she landed a gig in vaudeville in New York then went to France, where she lived much of her life, becoming one of the most popular and highest-paid performers in Europe. When the Nazis invaded France, she joined the French Resistance, spying on enemy conversations while she performed. Later, returning to America, she refused to perform for segregated audiences and, in 1963, became one of the few women to stand alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. She told the crowd: “I’ve walked into the palaces of kings and queens and into the houses of presidents. And much more. But I could not walk into a hotel in America and get a cup of coffee, and that made me mad.”
Josephine Baker: The Story of an Awakening follows her inspiring life over five decades and features rare and never-before-seen footage. It airs on Tuesday, December 15, at 9:00pm on KQED 9. —Ellyn Hament
DID YOU KNOW?• Baker adopted 12 children from many countries, calling them “the rainbow tribe.” In a controversial move, she took them on the road to show that racial and cultural harmony could exist.
• She returned to Paris after D-Day and sold pieces of jewelry and other valuables to raise money and buy food and coal for impoverished Parisians.
• After Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered, Coretta Scott King asked Baker to the lead the Civil Rights movement. Concerned about her children’s safety, she turned Ms. King down. —Sabrina Zehnder
